Innovative And Conventional Approaches To Detrital Zircon Provenance Analysis: Looking To The Past, Present, And Future, Gregory Karl Wissink Jul 2016

Innovative And Conventional Approaches To Detrital Zircon Provenance Analysis: Looking To The Past, Present, And Future, Gregory Karl Wissink

Dissertations - ALL

Detrital provenance analysis is an important tool in our understanding paleo-fluvial drainages, erosion of landscapes, paleogeographic reconstructions, and regional geologic and tectonic histories. Here, we examine the utility of multiple provenance analysis techniques through their application to paleo, modern, and synthetic detrital datasets. Zircon is a common accessory mineral found in most detrital sediments, primarily due to its refractory nature. During formation, zircon preferentially incorporates the element U and Th into its crystal lattice while excluding Pb, making it ideal for radiometric dating. Inexpensive and time-efficient U/Pb age acquisition techniques make zircon the mineral of choice for a majority of …

Deprotection And Reductive Amination Methodology Of N-Boc-3-Amino-4-Halopyridines, Christopher Alexander Wilhelmsen Jul 2016

Deprotection And Reductive Amination Methodology Of N-Boc-3-Amino-4-Halopyridines, Christopher Alexander Wilhelmsen

Dissertations - ALL

The following describes a protocol for the one-pot deprotection and reductive amination of N-Boc-3-amino-4-halopyridines. The intermediate 3-amino-4-chloropyridinium trifluoroacetate salt combined with trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (TMSOTf) effectively facilitates condensation with a carbonyl moiety. The corresponding imine is subsequently reduced using sodium triacetoxyborohydride. The product, N-alkyl-3-amino-4-halopyridines, provides an effective synthon for our previously reported synthesis of imidazo[4,5-c]pyridines. The current approach greatly improves upon previously alkylation methods of these aryl amines; providing an expanded substrate scope with excellent yields.

First Amplitude Analysis Of B+→J/..., Thomas Britton Jul 2016

First Amplitude Analysis Of B+→J/..., Thomas Britton

Dissertations - ALL

The first amplitude analysis B+→J/ψφK+, J/ψ→μ+μ-, φ→K+K- events is performed in Isobar approximation using all six degrees of freedom of their decay kinematics and 3 fb-1 of pp collision data collected at √s=7-8 TeV with the LHCb detector. A number of K*+→φK+ states are observed, including K*(1680), which is observed in this decay mode for the first time (8σ significant). A number of J/ψφ mass structures are also observed which cannot be described with $K*+ contributions alone. A broad and significant (7.6σ) …

Constraint Answer Set Programming Versus Satisfiability Modulo Theories, Yuliya Lierler, Benjamin Susman Jul 2016

Constraint Answer Set Programming Versus Satisfiability Modulo Theories, Yuliya Lierler, Benjamin Susman

Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Constraint answer set programming is a promising research direction that integrates answer set programming with constraint processing. It is often informally related to the field of Satisfiability Modulo Theories. Yet, the exact formal link is obscured as the terminology and concepts used in these two research areas differ. In this paper, we make the link between these two areas precise.

A Dynamic Run-Profile Energy-Aware Approach For Scheduling Computationally Intensive Bioinformatics Applications, Sachin Pawaskar, Hesham Ali Jul 2016

A Dynamic Run-Profile Energy-Aware Approach For Scheduling Computationally Intensive Bioinformatics Applications, Sachin Pawaskar, Hesham Ali

Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

High Performance Computing (HPC) resources are housed in large datacenters, which consume exorbitant amounts of energy and are quickly demanding attention from businesses as they result in high operating costs. On the other hand HPC environments have been very useful to researchers in many emerging areas in life sciences such as Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics. In an earlier work, we introduced a dynamic model for energy aware scheduling (EAS) in a HPC environment; the model is domain agnostic and incorporates both the deadline parameter as well as energy parameters for computationally intensive applications. Our proposed EAS model incorporates 2-phases. In …

Uv Completions For Non-Critical Strings, Fabio Apruzzi, Falk Hassler, Jonathan J. Heckman, Ilarion V. Melnikov

Publications and Research

Compactifications of the physical superstring to two dimensions provide a general template for realizing 2D conformal field theories coupled to worldsheet gravity, i.e. non-critical string theories. Motivated by this observation, in this paper we determine the quasi-topological 8D theory which governs the vacua of 2D N = (0, 2) gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs) obtained from compactifications of type I and heterotic strings on a Calabi-Yau fourfold. We also determine the quasi-topological 6D theory governing the 2D vacua of intersecting 7-branes in compactifications of F-theory on an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau fivefold, where matter fields and interaction terms localize on lower-dimensional …

Active Object Localization In Visual Situations, Max H. Quinn, Anthony Rhodes, Melanie Mitchell Jul 2016

Active Object Localization In Visual Situations, Max H. Quinn, Anthony Rhodes, Melanie Mitchell

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

—We describe a method for performing active localization of objects in instances of visual situations. A visual situation is an abstract concept—e.g., “a boxing match”, “a birthday party”, “walking the dog”, “waiting for a bus”—whose image instantiations are linked more by their common spatial and semantic structure than by low-level visual similarity. Our system combines given and learned knowledge of the structure of a particular situation, and adapts that knowledge to a new situation instance as it actively searches for objects. More specifically, the system learns a set of probability distributions describing spatial and other relationships among relevant objects. The …

Managing Contingencies In Smart Grids Via The Internet Of Things, Stefano Ciavarella, Jhi Young Joo, Simone Silvestri Jul 2016

Managing Contingencies In Smart Grids Via The Internet Of Things, Stefano Ciavarella, Jhi Young Joo, Simone Silvestri

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes a framework for contingency management using smart loads, which are realized through the emerging paradigm of the Internet of things. The framework involves the system operator, the load serving entities (LSEs), and the end-users with smart home management systems that automatically control adjustable loads. The system operator uses an efficient linear equation solver to quickly calculate the load curtailment needed at each bus to relieve congested lines after a contingency. Given this curtailment request, an LSE calculates a power allowance for each of its end-use customers to maximize the aggregate user utility. This large-scale NP-hard problem is …

Emission From Black Holes And Supernovae In The Early Universe, Brandon Kerry Wiggins Jul 2016

Emission From Black Holes And Supernovae In The Early Universe, Brandon Kerry Wiggins

Theses and Dissertations

To constrain the era when the first galaxies and stars appeared upcoming instruments will rely on the brightest events in the universe: supernovae and brilliant emission from massive black holes. In this dissertation, we investigate the observability of certain types of supernovae of the very first stars (Population III stars) and find that while these events are sufficiently luminous to be observed with deep-sky instruments such as the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), they may not observe these particular types of events in their lifetimes. We next explore the origins of massive black holes and introduce the direct collapse hypothesis …

Studies Toward Yaku'amide A And Synthesis And Applications Of Bulky Α,Β-Dehydroamino Acids, Jintao Jiang Jul 2016

Studies Toward Yaku'amide A And Synthesis And Applications Of Bulky Α,Β-Dehydroamino Acids, Jintao Jiang

Theses and Dissertations

Yaku'amide A shows a unique inhibitory profile against a series of 39 human cancer cell lines (JFCR39). In our efforts to synthesize yaku'amide A, we have optimized our regioselective base-free aminohydroxylation method with a series of nitrogen sources, developed a chiral reagent-mediated aminohydroxylation strategy and chemoselective deprotections of the resulting aminohydroxylation product, and explored a stereospecific E2 dehydration and O-N acyl transfer sequence. In addition, we have prepared the right-hand tetrapeptide and the NTA subunit. For our bulky α,β-dehydroamino acids project, we have developed strategies to incorporate α,β-dehydroamino acids such as ΔVal and ΔEnv into small synthetic peptides via Solid …

The Quest To Secure Email: A Usability Analysis Of Key Management Alternatives, Jeffrey Thomas Andersen Jul 2016

The Quest To Secure Email: A Usability Analysis Of Key Management Alternatives, Jeffrey Thomas Andersen

Theses and Dissertations

The current state of email security is lacking, and the need for end-to-end encryption of email is clear. Recent research has begun to make progress towards usable, secure email for the masses (i.e., novice users without IT support). In this paper, we evaluate the usability implications of three different key management approaches: PGP, IBE, and passwords. Our work is the first formal A/B evaluation of the usability of different key management schemes, and the largest formal evaluation of secure email ever performed. Our results reveal interesting inherent usability trade-offs for each approach to secure email. Furthermore, our research results in …

Whisk: Web Hosted Information Into Summarized Knowledge, Jiewen Wu Jul 2016

Whisk: Web Hosted Information Into Summarized Knowledge, Jiewen Wu

Master's Theses

Today’s online content increases at an alarmingly rate which exceeds users’ ability to consume such content. Modern search techniques allow users to enter keyword queries to find content they wish to see. However, such techniques break down when users freely browse the internet without knowing exactly what they want. Users may have to invest an unnecessarily long time reading content to see if they are interested in it. Automatic text summarization helps relieve this problem by creating synopses that significantly reduce the text while preserving the key points. Steffen Lyngbaek created the SPORK summarization pipeline to solve the content overload …

A Simulation-Based Layered Framework Framework For The Development Of Collaborative Autonomous Systems, Ioannis Sakiotis Jul 2016

A Simulation-Based Layered Framework Framework For The Development Of Collaborative Autonomous Systems, Ioannis Sakiotis

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to introduce a simulation-based software framework that facilitates the development of collaborative autonomous systems. Significant commonalities exist in the design approaches of both collaborative and autonomous systems, mirroring the sense, plan, act paradigm, and mostly adopting layered architectures. Unfortunately, the development of such systems is intricate and requires low-level interfacing which significantly detracts from development time. Frameworks for the development of collaborative and autonomous systems have been developed but are not flexible and center on narrow ranges of applications and platforms. The proposed framework utilizes an expandable layered structure that allows developers to define …

If you were to open your own cafe, would you not want to effortlessly identify the most suitable location to set up your shop? Choosing an optimal physical location is a critical decision for numerous businesses, as many factors contribute to the final choice of the location. In this paper, we seek to address the issue by investigating the use of publicly available Facebook Pages data-which include user "check-ins", types of business, and business locations-to evaluate a user-selected physical location with respect to a type of business. Using a dataset of 20,877 food businesses in Singapore, we conduct analysis of …

A Learning-To-Rank Based Fault Localization Approach Using Likely Invariants, Tien-Duy B. Le, David Lo, Claire Le Goues, Lars Grunske Jul 2016

A Learning-To-Rank Based Fault Localization Approach Using Likely Invariants, Tien-Duy B. Le, David Lo, Claire Le Goues, Lars Grunske

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Debugging is a costly process that consumes much of developer time and energy. To help reduce debugging effort, many studies have proposed various fault localization approaches. These approaches take as input a set of test cases (some failing, some passing) and produce a ranked list of program elements that are likely to be the root cause of the failures (i.e., failing test cases). In this work, we propose Savant, a new fault localization approach that employs a learning-to-rank strategy, using likely invariant diffs and suspiciousness scores as features, to rank methods based on their likelihood to be a root cause …

Word Clouds With Latent Variable Analysis For Visual Comparison Of Documents, Tuan M. V. Le, Hady W. Lauw Jul 2016

Word Clouds With Latent Variable Analysis For Visual Comparison Of Documents, Tuan M. V. Le, Hady W. Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Word cloud is a visualization form for text that is recognized for its aesthetic, social, and analytical values. Here, we are concerned with deepening its analytical value for visual comparison of documents. To aid comparative analysis of two or more documents, users need to be able to perceive similarities and differences among documents through their word clouds. However, as we are dealing with text, approaches that treat words independently may impede accurate discernment of similarities among word clouds containing different words of related meanings. We therefore motivate the principle of displaying related words in a coherent manner, and propose to …

A Feasible No-Root Approach On Android, Yao Cheng, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng Jul 2016

A Feasible No-Root Approach On Android, Yao Cheng, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Root is the administrative privilege on Android, which is however inaccessible on stock Android devices. Due to the desire for privileged functionalities and the reluctance of rooting their devices, Android users seek for no-root approaches, which provide users with part of root privileges without rooting their devices. In this paper, we newly discover a feasible no-root approach based on the ADB loopback. To ensure such no-root approach is not misused proactively, we examine its dark side, including privacy leakage via logs and user input inference. Finally, we discuss the solutions and suggestions from different perspectives.

Can Instagram Posts Help Characterize Urban Micro-Events?, Kasthuri Jayarajah, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Social media content, from platforms such as Twitter and Foursquare, has enabled an exciting new field of social sensing, where participatory content generated by users has been used to identify unexpected emerging or trending events. In contrast to such text-based channels, we focus on image-sharing social applications (specifically Instagram), and investigate how such urban social sensing can leverage upon the additional multi-modal, multimedia content. Given the significantly higher fraction of geotagged content on Instagram, we aim to use such channels to go beyond identification of long-lived events (e.g., a marathon) to achieve finer-grained characterization of multiple micro-events (e.g., a person …

An Adaptability-Driven Model And Tool For Analysis Of Service Profitability, Eng Lieh Ouh, Jarzabek Stan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Profitability of adopting Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solutions forexisting applications is currently analyzed mostly in informal way. Informalanalysis is unreliable because of the many conflicting factors that affect costs andbenefits of offering applications on the cloud. We propose a quantitative economicmodel for evaluating profitability of migrating to SaaS that enables potentialservice providers to evaluate costs and benefits of various migration strategiesand choices of target service architectures. In previous work, we presented arudimentary conceptual SaaS economic model enumerating factors that have todo with service profitability, and defining qualitative relations among them. Aquantitative economic model presented in this paper extends the conceptualmodel with equations …
