Development Of Organocatalytic Reactions For The Assembly Of Complex Molecules, Chenguang Yu

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Development of efficient organocatalytic reactions for the facile assembly of synthetically and medicinally useful molecules is an important task in modern organic synthesis. Towards this end, my Ph. D. study focuses on the development of novel organocatalytic reactions for the construction of structurally diverse molecular architectures. A chiral bifunctional amine thiourea as promoter has been developed as an efficient solution to a long standing challenging issue in atropo-enantioselective transesterification of the Bringmann lactones. This organocatalytic approach delivers the first highly enantioselective, high yielding dynamic kinetic resolution process for the preparation of axially chiral biaryl compounds with a broad substrate scope …

During the Deep Propagating Gravity Wave Experiment (DEEPWAVE) project in June and July 2014, the Gulfstream V research aircraft flew 97 legs over the Southern Alps of New Zealand and 150 legs over the Tasman Sea and Southern Ocean, mostly in the low stratosphere at 12.1-km altitude. Improved instrument calibration, redundant sensors, longer flight legs, energy flux estimation, and scale analysis revealed several new gravity wave properties. Over the sea, flight-level wave fluxes mostly fell below the detection threshold. Over terrain, disturbances had characteristic mountain wave attributes of positive vertical energy flux (EFz), negative zonal momentum flux, and …

Steady State Configurations Of Cells Connected By Cadherin Sites, Jared Adam Mcbride Jul 2016

Steady State Configurations Of Cells Connected By Cadherin Sites, Jared Adam Mcbride

Theses and Dissertations

Many cells employ cadherin complexes (c-sites) on the cell membrane to attach to neighboring cells, as well as integrin complexes (i-sites) to attach to a substrate in order to accomplish cell migration. This paper analyzes a model for the motion of a group of cells connected by c-sites. We begin with two cells connected by a single c-site and analyze the resultant motion of the system. We find that the system is irrotational. We present a result for reducing the number of c-sites in a system with c-sites between pairs of cells. This greatly simplifies the general system, and provides …

Wildlife Benefits Of Switchgrass Production In Kentucky, S. Ray Smith, Krista Lea, Thomas Clarkson Keene, Laura Mary Jane Schwer

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) is a warm-season perennial grass native to much of the United States including Kentucky (USDA). Switchgrass can be grown on marginal soils and regularly produces high biomass yields (4 to 8 tons of dry matter per acre) in Kentucky. Switchgrass varieties are broadly classified into two ecotypes: lowland and upland. Lowland varieties, such as ‘Alamo,’ typically produce higher yields, while upland varieties, such as ‘Cave-in-Rock’ and ‘Kanlow,’ generally have higher forage quality.

Long before the term “sustainable” became a household word, farmers were implementing sustainable practices in the form of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies. IPM uses a combination of biological, cultural, physical, and chemical methods to reduce and/or manage pest populations. These strategies are used to minimize environmental risks, economic costs, and health hazards. Pests are managed (although rarely eliminated) to reduce their negative impact on the crop.

Scouting and monitoring diseases, insects, weeds, and abiotic disorders in order to identify potential problems before they result in serious losses is essential to the IPM approach. The key to effective monitoring is …

As classrooms transition from traditional to cooperative learning environments, questions about the details of these environments effectiveness are posed. Does this model equally benefit all students? How do nontraditional (NT) students' gains in conceptual knowledge compare to those of traditional (Trad) students in these classrooms? Do NT students' social differences (i.e. age, employment status, family life, etc.) affect the amount of learning they do in the course or their tendency to form collaborative ties with other students? In three sections of SCALE-UP introductory calculus-based physics, we collected social network survey data about student connections and used the Force Concept Inventory …

In-Network Retransmissions In Named Data Networking, Hila Ben Abraham, Patrick Crowley Jul 2016

In-Network Retransmissions In Named Data Networking, Hila Ben Abraham, Patrick Crowley

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The strategy layer is an important architectural component in both Content-Centric Networking (CCN) and Named Data Networking (NDN). This component introduces a new forwarding model that allows an application to configure its namespace with a forwarding strategy. A core mechanism in every forwarding strategy is the decision of whether to retransmit an unsatisfied Interest or to wait for an application retransmission. While some applications request control of all retransmissions, others rely on the assumption that the strategy will retransmit an Interest when it is not satisfied. Although an application can select the forwarding strategy used in the local host, it …

Growth Of Groups Of Wind Generated Waves, Frederique Drullion, Shahrdad Sajjadi

Publications

In this paper we demonstrate numerical computations of turbulent wind blowing over group of waves that are growing in time. The numerical model adopted for the turbulence model is based on differential second-moment model that was adopted for growing idealized waves by Drullion & Sajjadi (2014). The results obtained here demonstrate the formation of cat's-eye which appear asymmetrically over the waves within a group.

Reactive Flow Modeling Of Small Scale Detonation Failure Experiments For A Baseline Non-Ideal Explosive, David E. Kittell, Nick R. Cummock, Steven F. Son

Purdue Energetics Research Center Articles

Small scale characterization experiments using only 1–5 g of a baseline ammonium nitrate plus fuel oil (ANFO) explosive are discussed and simulated using an ignition and growth reactive flow model. There exists a strong need for the small scale characterization of non-ideal explosives in order to adequately survey the wide parameter space in sample composition, density, and microstructure of these materials. However, it is largely unknown in the scientific community whether any useful or meaningful result may be obtained from detonation failure, and whether a minimum sample size or level of confinement exists for the experiments. In this work, it …

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States. It usually exhibits its presence with the formation of pulmonary nodules. Nodules are round or oval-shaped growth present in the lung. Computed Tomography (CT) scans are used by radiologists to detect such nodules. Computer Aided Detection (CAD) of such nodules would aid in providing a second opinion to the radiologists and would be of valuable help in lung cancer screening. In this research, we study various feature selection methods for the CAD system framework proposed in FlyerScan. Algorithmic steps of FlyerScan include (i) local contrast enhancement (ii) …

A weakly nonlinear theory has been proposed and developed for calculating the energy- transfer rate to individual waves in a group. It is shown what portion of total energy- transfer rate, over the envelope of wave group, affects individual waves in the group. From this an expression for complex phase speed of individual waves is calculated. It is deduced that each wave in a group does not grow at the same rate. It is shown that the critical layer is no longer symmetrical compared with the ideal monochromatic waves. This asymmetry causes the critical layer height to be lower over …
