Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Graph anomaly detection (GAD) is a critical task with applications in domains such as networking, finance, and bioinformatics. % However, the scarcity of labeled anomalies and the limitations of unsupervised methods hinder effective detection. % While semi-supervised and few-shot learning approaches offer improvements, they struggle with knowledge transfer and rely heavily on labeled data. % Recent advancements in prompt tuning on graphs provide a promising direction, but their application to heterophilous graphs in anomaly detection remains underexplored. % In this work, we propose AffinityTune, a novel framework for few-shot graph anomaly detection based on prompt tuning. % Our approach introduces …

Role Of Social Media Mindfulness In Combatting Fake News Propagation, Gaurav Bansal, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Jason B. Thatcher Aug 2025

Role Of Social Media Mindfulness In Combatting Fake News Propagation, Gaurav Bansal, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Jason B. Thatcher

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The dissemination of fake news by social media users is a key factor in the escalation of misinformation. Research suggests that social media networks are becoming increasingly homophilic, which leads to an overreliance on social media friends that contributes to the spread of fake news. However, little is known about how social media mindfulness can reduce the sharing of fake news. To investigate this research question, we conceptualized a social media mindfulness construct and developed the social media mindfulness scale. We also hypothesize that social media mindfulness lowers overreliance on friends’ knowledge, which increases skepticism about social media news that …

Memotune: A Measure And Moment-Driven Fine-Tuning Framework For Quantized Large Language Models, Yun Zhang, Xue Geng, Lizi Liao, Jintong Sun, Minghe Yu, Ge Yu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Quantizing large language models (LLMs) is essential for reducing memory and computational costs in natural language processing. Existing methods combine quantization with parameter-efficient fine-tuning but often fail to meet practical performance requirements. This paper introduces MeMoTune, a novel fine-tuning framework for quantized LLMs. By employing a measure and moment approach within a low-rank approximation framework in probability measure space, MeMoTune optimizes the objective function for superior fine-tuning results. The update process is further refined through scaled gradient, enhancing convergence efficiency and noise robustness. Experiments on tasks like text generation, summarization, and understanding show MeMoTune significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods, e.g. fine-tuning …

Advancing Molecular Graph-Text Pre-Training Via Fine-Grained Alignment, Yibo Li, Yuan Fang, Mengmei Zhang, Chuan Shi Aug 2025

Advancing Molecular Graph-Text Pre-Training Via Fine-Grained Alignment, Yibo Li, Yuan Fang, Mengmei Zhang, Chuan Shi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Understanding molecular structure and related knowledge is crucialfor scientific research. Recent studies integrate molecular graphswith their textual descriptions to enhance molecular representationlearning. However, they focus on the whole molecular graph andneglect frequently occurring subgraphs, known as motifs, whichare essential for determining molecular properties. Without suchfine-grained knowledge, these models struggle to generalize to un-seen molecules and tasks that require motif-level insights. To bridgethis gap, we propose FineMolTex, a novel Fine-grained Moleculargraph-Text pre-training framework to jointly learn coarse-grainedmolecule-level knowledge and fine-grained motif-level knowledge.Specifically, FineMolTex consists of two pre-training tasks: a con-trastive alignment task for coarse-grained matching and a maskedmulti-modal modeling task for …

Colloquial Singaporean English Style Transfer With Fine-Grained Explainable Control, Jinggui Liang, Dung Vo, Yap Hong Xian, Hai Leong Chieu, Kian Ming A. Chai, Jing Jiang, Lizi Liao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Colloquial Singaporean English (Singlish) is an informal English marked by a unique blend of languages reflecting Singapore’s multicultural identity. Style transfer between Singlish and Standard (formal) English is vital for various applications, yet existing methods often lack explainability and fine-grained control. To fill this gap, we contribute in two key ways. First, we construct a large, high-quality dataset of formal and informal sentences, annotated across six linguistic aspects—Syntax, Lexical Borrowing, Pragmatics, Prosody/Phonology, Emoticons/Punctuation, and Code-Switching—with detailed explanations. Starting with manually annotated cases, we scaled the dataset to 140K with ensured quality. Second, inspired by the “Society of Mind” theory, we …

Xfinbench: Benchmarking Llms In Complex Financial Problem Solving And Reasoning, Zhihan Zhang, Yixin Cao, Lizi Liao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Solving financial problems demands complex reasoning, multimodal data processing, and a broad technical understanding, presenting unique challenges for current large language models (LLMs). We introduce **XFinBench**, a novel benchmark with 4,235 examples designed to evaluate LLM’s ability in solving comple**X**, knowledge-intensive **Fin**ancial problems across diverse graduate-level finance topics with multi-modal context. We identify five core capabilities of LLMs using XFinBench, i.e., _terminology understanding_, _temporal reasoning_, _future forecasting_, _scenario planning_, and _numerical modelling_. Upon XFinBench, we conduct extensive experiments on 18 leading models. The result shows that o1 is the best-performing text-only model with an overall accuracy of 67.3%, but still …

Connecting Giants: Synergistic Knowledge Transfer Of Large Multimodal Models For Few-Shot Learning, Hao Tang, Shengfeng He, Jing Qin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Few-shot learning (FSL) addresses the challenge of classifying novel classes with limited training samples. While some methods leverage semantic knowledge from smaller-scale models to mitigate data scarcity, these approaches often introduce noise and bias due to the data's inherent simplicity. In this paper, we propose a novel framework, Synergistic Knowledge Transfer (SYNTRANS), which effectively transfers diverse and complementary knowledge from large multimodal models to empower the off-the-shelf few-shot learner. Specifically, SYNTRANS employs CLIP as a robust teacher and uses a few-shot vision encoder as a weak student, distilling semantic-aligned visual knowledge via an unsupervised proxy task. Subsequently, a training-free synergistic …

Collisionrepair: First‑Aid And Automated Patching For Storage Collision Vulnerabilities In Smart Contracts, Yu Pan, Wanjing Han, Yue Duan, Mu Zhang Aug 2025

Collisionrepair: First‑Aid And Automated Patching For Storage Collision Vulnerabilities In Smart Contracts, Yu Pan, Wanjing Han, Yue Duan, Mu Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Storage collision vulnerabilities, a significant security risk in upgradeable smart contracts, often arise when a user-facing proxy contract and a backend logic contract share storage space. While static analysis techniques can detect such issues, they often over-approximate program states, leading to false positives and requiring developers to manually verify each issue, giving attackers time to exploit any overlooked vulnerabilities. To address this, we propose COLLISIONREPAIR, an automated patching technique for mitigating storage collision risks. COLLISIONREPAIR monitors storage access sequences between proxy and logic contracts by defining an "ownership" property for storage locations. It then replays historical transactions to recover existing …

Prism: To Fortify Widget Based User‑App Data Exchanges Using Android Virtualization Framework, Yingtat Ng, Zhe Chen, Haiqing Qiu, Xuhua Ding

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present Prism, an UI hardening technique for an Android app to safeguard its widgets against a corrupted kernel. Prism ensures secure interface rendering and allows for visual authentication, which developers could use to enable user intent confidentiality protection. Our design leverages the recent Android Virtualization Framework with minimal changes to the existing UI framework and graphics subsystem. It is much easier to deploy and use Prism on Android phones than TrustZone-based secure UI schemes, because the apps are not admitted to the Secure World and retain their full rights to manage and control their own interfaces. We have implemented …

Causalabstain: Enhancing Multilingual Llms With Causal Reasoning For Trustworthy Abstention, Yuxi Sun, Aoqi Zuo, Wei Gao, Jing Ma Aug 2025

Causalabstain: Enhancing Multilingual Llms With Causal Reasoning For Trustworthy Abstention, Yuxi Sun, Aoqi Zuo, Wei Gao, Jing Ma

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Large Language Models (LLMs) often exhibit knowledge disparities across languages. Encouraging LLMs to abstain when faced with knowledge gaps is a promising strategy to reduce hallucinations in multilingual settings. Current abstention strategies for multilingual scenarios primarily rely on generating feedback in various languages using LLMs and performing self-reflection. However, these methods can be adversely impacted by inaccuracies and biases in the generated feedback. To address this, from a causal perspective, we introduce CausalAbstain, a method that helps LLMs determine whether to utilize multiple generated feedback responses and how to identify the most useful ones. Extensive experiments demonstrate that CausalAbstain effectively …

Zero-Shot Generalist Graph Anomaly Detection With Unified Neighborhood Prompts, Chaoxi Niu, Hezhe Qiao, Changlu Chen, Ling Chen, Guansong Pang Aug 2025

Zero-Shot Generalist Graph Anomaly Detection With Unified Neighborhood Prompts, Chaoxi Niu, Hezhe Qiao, Changlu Chen, Ling Chen, Guansong Pang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Graph anomaly detection (GAD), which aims to identify nodes in a graph that significantly deviate from normal patterns, plays a crucial role in broad application domains. However, existing GAD methods are one-model-for-one-dataset approaches, i.e., training a separate model for each graph dataset. This largely limits their applicability in real-world scenarios. To overcome this limitation, we propose a novel zero-shot generalist GAD approach UNPrompt that trains a one-for-all detection model, requiring the training of one GAD model on a single graph dataset and then effectively generalizing to detect anomalies in other graph datasets without any retraining or fine-tuning. The key insight …

Oblivious Digital Tokens, Mihael Liskij, Xuhua Ding, Gene Tsudik, David A. Basin Aug 2025

Oblivious Digital Tokens, Mihael Liskij, Xuhua Ding, Gene Tsudik, David A. Basin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A computing device typically identifies itself by exhibiting unique measurable behavior or by proving its knowledge of a secret. In both cases, the identifying device must reveal information to a verifier. Considerable research has focused on protecting identifying entities (provers) and reducing the amount of leaked data. However, little has been done to conceal the fact that the verification occurred. We show how this problem naturally arises in the context of digital emblems, which were recently proposed by the International Committee of the Red Cross to protect digital resources during cyber-conflicts. To address this new and important open problem, we define …

Improved Secure Two-Party Computation From A Geometric Perspective, Hao Guo, Liqiang Peng, Haiyang Xue, Li Peng, Weiran Liu, Zhe Liu, Lei. Hu Aug 2025

Improved Secure Two-Party Computation From A Geometric Perspective, Hao Guo, Liqiang Peng, Haiyang Xue, Li Peng, Weiran Liu, Zhe Liu, Lei. Hu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Multiplication and other non-linear operations are widely recognized as the most costly components of secure two-party computation (2PC) based on linear secret sharing. Moreover, the comparison protocol (or Wrap protocol) is essential for various operations such as truncation, signed extension, and signed non-uniform multiplication. This paper aims to optimize these protocols by avoiding invoking the costly comparison protocol, thereby improving their efficiency. We propose a novel approach to study 2PC from a geometric perspective. Specifically, we interpret the two shares of a secret as the horizontal and vertical coordinates of a point in a Cartesian coordinate system, with the secret itself …

Use Of A Preliminary Artificial Intelligence-Based Laryngeal Cancer Screening Framework For Low-Resource Settings: Development And Validation Study, Shao Wei Sean Lam, Min Hun Lee, Michael Dorosan, Samuel Altonji, Hiang Khoon Tan, Walter T. Lee

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Background: Early-stage diagnosis of laryngeal cancer significantly improves patient survival and quality of life. However, the scarcity of specialists in low-resource settings hinders the timely review of flexible nasopharyngoscopy (FNS) videos, which are essential for accurate triage of at-risk patients. Objective: We introduce a preliminary AI-based screening framework to address this challenge for the triaging of at-risk patients in low-resource settings. This formative research addresses multiple challenges common in high-dimensional FNS videos: (1) selecting clear, informative images; (2) deriving regions within frames that show an anatomical landmark of interest; and (3) classifying patients into referral grades based on the FNS video …

Gcot: Chain-Of-Thought Prompt Learning For Graphs, Xingtong Yu, Chang Zhou, Zhongwei Kuai, Xinming Zhang, Yuan Fang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Chain-of-thought (CoT) prompting has achieved remarkable success in natural language processing (NLP). However, its vast potential remains largely unexplored for graphs. This raises an interesting question: How can we design CoT prompting for graphs to guide graph models to learn step by step? On one hand, unlike natural languages, graphs are non-linear and characterized by complex topological structures. On the other hand, many graphs lack textual data, making it difficult to formulate language-based CoT prompting. %Therefore we cannot directly adopt the CoT prompting methods used in the language domain. In this work, we propose the first CoT prompt learning framework …

L3net: Localized And Layered Reparameterization For Incremental Learning, Xuandi Luo, Huaidong Zhang, Yi Xie, Hongrui Zhang, Xuemiao Xu, Shengfeng He Aug 2025

L3net: Localized And Layered Reparameterization For Incremental Learning, Xuandi Luo, Huaidong Zhang, Yi Xie, Hongrui Zhang, Xuemiao Xu, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Model-based class incremental learning (CIL) methods aim to address the challenge of catastrophic forgetting by retaining certain parameters and expanding the model architecture. However, retaining too many parameters can lead to an overly complex model, increasing inference overhead. Additionally, compressing these parameters to reduce the model size can result in performance degradation. To tackle these challenges, we propose a novel three-stage CIL framework called Localized and Layered Reparameterization for Incremental Learning (L3Net). The rationale behind our approach is to balance model complexity and performance by selectively expanding and optimizing critical components. Specifically, the framework introduces a Localized Dual-path Expansion structure, …

A Three-Stage Matheuristic For The Blood Stochastic Inventory Routing Problem, Vincent F. Yu, Nabila Salsabila, Aldy Gunawan, Aldy Gunawan, Nurhadi Siswanto

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This research introduces a blood distribution system under vendor-managed inventory that considers uncertain supply and demand. We present it as the Blood Stochastic Inventory Routing Problem, formulating it as a two-stage stochastic programming model. To solve this problem, this study proposes a three-stage matheuristic that combines a perturbation heuristic, Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search, and an exact approach. From historical data of Surabaya Blood Center in Indonesia, six sets of new instances are generated under different settings. Computational results show that our proposed three-stage matheuristic outperforms CPLEX and a two-stage matheuristic by gaining optimal or better solutions within a significantly shorter …

Focus: Evaluating Pre-Trained Vision-Language Models On Underspecification Reasoning, Kankan Zhou, Yibin Lai, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Jing Jiang Aug 2025

Focus: Evaluating Pre-Trained Vision-Language Models On Underspecification Reasoning, Kankan Zhou, Yibin Lai, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Jing Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Humans possess a remarkable ability to interpret underspecified ambiguous statements by inferring their meanings from contexts such as visual inputs. This ability, however, may not be as developed in recent pre-trained visionlanguage models (VLMs). In this paper, we introduce a novel probing dataset called FOCUS to evaluate whether state-of-the-art VLMs have this ability. FOCUS consists of underspecified sentences paired with image contexts and carefully designed probing questions. Our experiments reveal that VLMs still fall short in handling underspecification even when visual inputs that can help resolve the ambiguities are available. To further support research in underspecification, FOCUS will be released …

Assessing The Robustness Of Test Selection Methods For Deep Neural Networks, Qiang Hu, Yuejun Guo, Xiaofei Xie, Maxime Cordy, Wei Ma, Mike Papadakis, Lei Ma, Yves Le Traon

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Regularly testing deep learning-powered systems on newly collected data is critical to ensure their reliability, robustness, and efficacy in real-world applications. This process is demanding due to the significant time and human effort required for labeling new data. While test selection methods alleviate manual labor by labeling and evaluating only a subset of data while meeting testing criteria, we observe that such methods with reported promising results are simply evaluated, e.g., testing on original test data. The question arises: are they always reliable? In this article, we explore when and to what extent test selection methods fail. First, we identify …

Gradients As An Action: Towards Communication-Efficient Federated Recommender Systems Via Adaptive Action Sharing, Zhufeng Lu, Chentao Jia, Ming Hu, Xiaofei Xie, Mingsong Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As a promising privacy-aware collaborative model training paradigm, Federated Learning (FL) is becoming popular in the design of distributed recommender systems. However, Federated Recommender Systems (FedRecs) greatly suffer from two major problems: i) extremely high communication overhead due to massive item embeddings involved in recommendation systems, and ii) intolerably low training efficiency caused by the entanglement of both heterogeneous network environments and client devices. Although existing methods attempt to employ various compression techniques to reduce communication overhead, due to the parameter errors introduced by model compression, they inevitably suffer from model performance degradation. To simultaneously address the above problems, this …

Decoding Teleconnection Impacts On Hydrological Switches In The Conus Using Wavelet Analysis, Surendra Maharjan, Wenzhao Li, Shahryar Fazli, Hesham Morgan, Hesham El-Askary

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Hydrometeorological teleconnections are key drivers of hydrological processes, representing the influence of large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns on regional climates. Understanding these teleconnections provides crucial insights into the mechanisms underlying hydrometeorological phenomena, particularly hydrological switches—rapid transitions between extreme events such as droughts and floods. These switches have become increasingly prevalent across the contiguous United States (CONUS), fueled by climate variability and evolving atmospheric patterns. This study utilizes cross-wavelet transform analysis to examine the spatial and temporal dynamics of hydrological switches and their correlations with major teleconnection indices, including NAO, ONI, WP, PDO, PNA, and QBO. The findings indicate significant coherence between …

Studies In Number Theory: Reciprocity Laws And Fundamental Domains, C. Xavier Parent

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

This thesis consists of two sections. The first section is an introductory survey of number theory discussing the reciprocity laws with a focus on accessibility. Number Theory has always been a fundamental area of mathematical study, with Gauss calling it “the queen of mathematics”. The reciprocity laws are a classical set of results from number theory which have driven number theory for quite a long time. Unfortunately, these results, while important, have always been very inaccessible to undergraduate students, making it hard to start studying the field. This survey attempts to help bridge that gap, giving a resource for novices …

An Investigation Into The Principle Of Symmetric Criticality, Guillermo Frausto Aug 2025

An Investigation Into The Principle Of Symmetric Criticality, Guillermo Frausto

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

In physics, symmetries help us understand complex systems by revealing conserved quantities and simplifying equations. In the context of general relativity, where spacetime is curved and dynamic, these symmetries become especially important when trying to reduce or solve the equations that govern gravitational and matter fields.

This dissertation investigates a mathematical principle known as the Principle of Symmetric Criticality (PSC), which helps determine when symmetries can be used to simplify physical theories without losing essential information. While often assumed to be valid, PSC does not always hold, and understanding when it does is critical for the reliable use of symmetry …

As human activities and climate change continue to reshape our landscape, understanding how land use changes over time is becoming increasingly important. Accurate ways to track and analyze these changes are essential for governments, businesses, and communities to make informed decisions. Monitoring agricultural land is particularly critical, as shifts in land use can impact food production and environmental pollutants. One of the primary tools used in the United States to monitor agricultural land is the Cropland Data Layer (CDL), an annual map created by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) from satellite images. While the CDL is highly accurate, …

Role Of Quartz Grain Size And Saturation On Fault Strength And Frictional Healing, Sapana Regmi Aug 2025

Role Of Quartz Grain Size And Saturation On Fault Strength And Frictional Healing, Sapana Regmi

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Rocks near the Earth's surface (less than 5 kilometers deep) often break and grind against one another to create crushed rock materials known as fault gouge. These fault gouges are filled with fragmented particles and broken rocks, which vary in grain size over time and space due to repeated earthquakes. This variation in grain size distribution along fault gouge can affect the strength of the fault, how it slips during an earthquake and how it 'heals' or recovers strength between earthquakes. Further, fault gouges often contain water from underground sources, which can influence how they slip. Previous studies have examined …
