Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems have become central to high-stakes applications such as autonomous driving and language-based decision support. As their deployment accelerates, ensuring the security and trustworthiness of these systems becomes paramount. Among the most stealthy and potent threats are backdoor attacks, where models behave as expected under normal conditions but exhibit malicious behavior when triggered by specific inputs, either digital or physical.

Quantum computing is developing at an expeditious rate, and once fully scalable quantum computers become realized, classical cryptographic systems face obsolescence. This approaching peril has prompted a paradigm shift away from pre-quantum cryptography and towards post-quantum primitives, such as those that arise from the field of coding theory. Among these, zero-knowledge proofs have emerged as a dynamic tool instrumental in constructing quantum-resilient digital signature schemes.

This dissertation presents three chapters that contribute to the study of economic forces shaping disagreements in society.
In Chapter 1, I demonstrate that political polarization can intensify due to innovations in the information market even if a population's ideological distribution is fixed. Viewership-maximizing news firms cater to a diverse audience who assess source accuracy using noisy private signals that vary in precision and ideological bias. If better-informed consumers disproportionately migrate to newer platforms for news (e.g., the Internet), traditional media firms increase news slant to appeal more to less-informed partisans on both sides of the ideological spectrum. Neural networks have been extensively used in predicting soil water tension for improved irrigation scheduling and management. However, their lack of interpretability constrains their efficacy in grasping the nuanced patterns prevalent in soil water tension time series data. The first goal of this research was to develop interpretable deep neural network models for soil water tension prediction across multiple soil depths (0.15m, 0.3m, 0.46m and 0.6m) and prediction horizons (1h, 6h, and 12h). Developing a non-toxic, high-performance fluorescent nanomaterial is crucial for overcoming the environmental and health restrictions of current cadmium, and lead based quantum dots (QDs), which limit the application of quantum dots in optoelectronics and bioimaging. In this thesis, we synthesized environmentally friendly AgInS2 QDs by a colloidal method, systematically altering the In/Ag precursor ratio from 2 to 6 to study the impact on their optical and photophysical properties. Our goals were to find the optimal stoichiometry for maximum quantum efficiency and stability. We also investigated further improving optical and photophysical properties through shelling with ZnS. This dissertation brings the power of graph thinking to three key challenges in modern AI, making complex data more transparent, generative design more controllable, and scholarly exploration more intuitive. First, we introduce Local CorEx, a new machine learning technique that uncovers hidden relationships among variables, making it easier to understand complex datasets without heavy computation. Next, we show how to guide the creation of new molecules by viewing the generation process itself as a walk through a "state graph," letting researchers steer outcomes toward desired chemical properties—without any extra model training. This dissertation develops new computational tools to unlock this data’s potential, aiming to improve patient care and medical research. Five projects tackle different challenges: Project 1 creates Deep MAGIC, a method to fill in missing genetic and image data accurately, vital for understanding diseases like cancer. Wetlands provide a multitude of ecosystem services that are important to people including water filtration, flood attenuation, carbon sequestration, and recreational opportunities such as birding and hunting. Wetland plants support these services by performing important underlying ecological processes called ecosystem functions which include removing heavy metals from water and providing habitat for migratory birds. The provisioning of these functions varies through space and time, by vegetation type, and via impacts from other factors like climate and management actions. We consider the problems of statically refuting equivalence and similarity of output distributions defined by a pair of probabilistic programs. Equivalence and similarity are two fundamental relational properties of probabilistic programs that are essential for their correctness both in implementation and in compilation. In this work, we present a new method for static equivalence and similarity refutation. Our method refutes equivalence and similarity by computing a function over program outputs whose expected value with respect to the output distributions of two programs is different. Generating high-quality Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) remains challenging for educational tools due to the need for contextual relevance and plausible distractors. Existing methods still struggle with these dual requirements, leading to questions that lack depth and distractors that are either too obvious or irrelevant. In this paper, we propose BiFlow, a novel framework that integrates bidirectional reasoning perspectives: teacher reasoning generates contextually relevant questions and plausible distractors, while student reasoning evaluates question clarity and the misleading nature of the distractors. Model binarization has made significant progress in enabling real-time and energy-efficient computation for con-volutional neural networks (CNN), offering a potential solution to the deployment challenges faced by Vision Transformers (ViTs) on edge devices. In this chapter, different variants of routing problems with profits will be discussed. Based on what is available in literature, mostly variants of the orienteering problem will be discussed. A first variant considers capacity constraints, since these appear frequently in many practical applications. Next, multi-objective orienteering problems, explicitly considering different types of profits separately are discussed. This paper examines the role of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme in electronic waste (e-waste) management in Singapore. Ensuring the safety and well-being of children is increasingly important, especially in a world where visual content is pervasive. This paper proposes a novel multimodal, multilingual, and multiclass sentiment analysis method for social media content, aimed at improving content moderation for child safety. Our approach integrates textual, visual, and audio data from videos, categorizing sentiment into four levels: positive, slightly negative, negative, and strongly negative, enabling granular detection of harmful content. To enhance explainability and trust, we also leverage interpretable mechanisms to analyze the contributions of each modality. This paper introduces practical schemes for keyword Private Information Retrieval (keyword PIR), enabling private queries on public databases using keywords. Unlike standard indexbased PIR, keyword PIR presents greater challenges, since the query’s position within the database is unknown and the domain of keywords is vast. Our key insight is to construct an efficient and compact key-to-index mapping, thereby reducing the keyword PIR problem to standard PIR. The code base of software projects evolves essentially through inserting and removing information to and from the source code. We can measure this evolution via the elements of information—tokens, words, nodes—of the respective representation of the code. In this work, we approach the measurement of the information content of the source code of open-source projects from an information-theoretic standpoint. Multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) has demonstrated remarkable success in collaborative tasks, yet faces significant challenges in scaling to complex scenarios requiring sustained planning and coordination across long horizons. While hierarchical approaches help decompose these tasks, they typically rely on hand-crafted subtasks and domain-specific knowledge, limiting their generalizability. We present L2M2, a novel hierarchical framework that leverages large language models (LLMs) for high-level strategic planning and MARL for low-level execution. L2M2 enables zero-shot planning that supports both end-to-end training and direct integration with pre-trained MARL models. Large Language Models (LLMs) have recently shown promise in Time Series Forecasting (TSF) by effectively capturing intricate time-domain dependencies. However, our preliminary experiments reveal that standard LLM-based approaches often fail to capture global correlations, limiting predictive performance. We found that embedding frequency-domain signals smooths weight distributions and enhances structured correlations by clearly separating global trends (low-frequency components) from local variations (high-frequency components). Building on these insights, we propose FreqLLM, a novel framework that integrates frequency-domain semantic alignment into LLMs to refine prompts for improved time series analysis.
