Didymosphenia geminata (didymo or rock snot) is a benthic, freshwater diatom that is native to North America and Europe. Although it is native, it is displaying invasive qualities through seasonal stalk production. Stalks accumulate into large, unattractive mats that have the potential to alter benthic aquatic communities. The ecology of didymo is puzzling; it has been steadily expanding outside of its native range, and seasonal mat production can be unpredictable. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) codes for proteins using a unique order of four major nitrogenous bases adenine, thymine, cytosine, and guanine. In several biological applications, such as the determination of DNA stability, production of biologic based drugs, and even taxonomic reorganization of species, it becomes necessary to understand the relative amounts of each nucleotide in a DNA sample, regardless of their sequence. This paper presents two applications of the general principle -- the everything is a matter of degree -- the principle that underlies fuzzy techniques. The first -- qualitative -- application helps explain the fact that while most earthquakes occur close to faults (borders between tectonic plates or terranes), earthquakes have also been observed in areas which are far away from the known faults. The second -- more quantitative -- application is to the problem of which of the collaborators should be listed as authors and which should be simply thanked in the paper. When collaboration of several people results in a business success, an important issue is how to fairly divide the gain between the participants. In principle, the solution to this problem is known since the 1950s: natural fairness requirements lead to the so-called Shapley value. However, the computation of Shapley value requires that we can estimate, for each subset of the set of all participants, how much gain they would have gained if they worked together without others. Integrity First, Service Before Self, And Excellence: Core Values Of Us Air Force Naturally Follow From Decision Theory, Martine Ceberio, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

By analyzing data both from peace time and from war time, the US Air Force came with three principles that determine success: integrity, service before self, and excellent. We show that these three principles naturally follow from decision theory, a theory that describes how a rational person should make decisions.

In a recent experiment, decision makers were asked whether they would prefer having more information about the corresponding situation. They confirmed this preference, and such information was provided to them. However, strangely, the decisions of those who received this information were worse than the decisions of the control group -- that did not get this information. In this paper, we provide an explanation for this paradoxical situation.

To better understand human behavior, we need to understand how people make decisions, how people select one of possible actions. This selection is usually based on predicting consequences of different actions, and these predictions are, in their turn, based on the past experience. For example, consequences that occur more frequently in the past are viewed as more probable. However, this is not just about frequency: recent observations are usually given more weight that past ones. Researchers have discovered semi-empirical formulas that describe our predictions reasonably well; these formulas form the basis of the Instance-Based Learning Theory (ILBT). In this paper, …

We present the discovery of two exoplanets transiting TOI-836 (TIC 440887364) using data from TESS Sector 11 and Sector 38. TOI-836 is a bright (T = 8.5 mag), high proper motion (∼200 mas yr⁻¹), low metallicity ([Fe/H]≈−0.28) K-dwarf with a mass of 0.68 ± 0.05 M and a radius of 0.67 ± 0.01 R. We obtain photometric follow-up observations with a variety of facilities, and we use these data sets to determine that the inner planet, TOI-836 b, is a 1.70 ± 0.07 R super-Earth in a 3.82-d orbit, placing it directly within the so-called …

In this project, we are making dye-sensitized solar cells using titanium dioxide and the dye from raspberries. We are exploring how electrons diffuse through these systems. To do this, we perform cyclic chronopotentiometry where we cycle between periods of applying a voltage to achieve a certain current and periods where the current is stopped. We focus on the time-dependent decay of the voltage when the current is stopped and fit these decays with a bi-exponential model. We compare the results of devices with and without lithium perchlorate in the electrolyte solution since lithium lowers the energies of the acceptor states …

Patients with several incompletely diagnosed and understood chronic diseases suffer from symptoms that limit their functional capacity. In particular, patients with chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME) and long covid syndromes have variable fatigue, malaise, poor and unrefreshing sleep, and delayed post-exertional exacerbations of these symptoms. There are no specific tests for these patients to diagnose their diseases properly. These patients must be aware of their daily activities and energy expenditure. Deuterium labeled compounds are often utilized in chemical research as internal standards in mass spectrometry, to study reaction mechanisms and in the pharmaceutical industry to slow the rate of metabolism. With the increase interest for deuterium labeled molecules, there is a renewed interest in selective methods for the installation of deuterium atoms into small organic molecules. However, current methods to incorporate deuterium atoms into organic molecules can lead to isotopic mixtures such as isotopologues and isotopomers. A better understanding of the relationship between land surface temperature (LST) and its influencing factors is important to the livable, healthy, and sustainable development of cities. In this study, we focused on the potential effect of human daily activities on LST from a short-term perspective. Beijing was selected as a case city, and Weibo check-in data were employed to measure the intensity of human daily activities. MODIS data were analyzed and used for urban LST measurement. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a large class of chemicals and common environmental pollutants. Understanding which PAHs and soil test levels may impact human health is an important aspect of gardening and micro-farming, particularly in urban environments that are at increased risk of soil contamination. Land use histories, such as sites associated with vehicle and industrial emissions, burning, and dumping, can elevate concentrations of PAHs in soils. This fact sheet provides instructions on assessing your site for PAHs that may present health risks to humans, testing the soil, and first steps for interpretation and management.

The findings of this laboratory based experiment suggest that waters with increasing total chlorine levels will have increased chlorate levels and should that water come into contact with milk it has the potential to cause chlorate contamination of said milk. This study examines the estimated increase in economic impact on a geography’s local economy by creating cross-marketing efforts between expanding an established outdoor recreation trail to a closely located city downtown commerce district. This research will analyze the resulting potential rise in sales/lodging tax revenues for that city by mapping the trail and downtown district, and cross-marketing the other to users of both or either venue. Potential increase in economic impact will be estimated utilizing IMPLAN methodology by assessing the economic impact on the local economy that a percentage range of increased spending resulting from this cross-marketing effort could generate.

Guitar players have been modifying their guitar tone with audio effects ever since the mid-20th century. Traditionally, these effects have been achieved by passing a guitar signal through a series of electronic circuits which modify the signal to produce the desired audio effect. With advances in computer technology, audio “plugins” have been created to produce audio effects digitally through programming algorithms.
