Mechanical Properties And Strength Deterioration Mechanism Of Soil In Inner Dump Of Open-Pit Coal Mine Under The Action Of Freeze-Thaw Cycles, Zhang Heyong, Wang Xuedong, Zhu Yongdong, Wang Haipeng, Qi Lihui
Coal Geology & Exploration
In order to investigate the influence mechanism of freeze-thaw cycles on the structure and mechanical properties of soil, the typical clay soil in the inner dump of Yuanbaoshan open-pit coal mine in Inner Mongolia was taken as the research object, and the simulation analysis of the internal temperature, moisture and stress fields of the soil was carried out through laboratory freeze-thaw cycle tests and MatDEM numerical simulation. The results show that: freeze-shrinkage occurs to the soil in the dump after the freeze-thaw cycles, and the stress-strain curve shows the trend of strain softening at low confining pressure for shear failure, …

Intelligent Optimization Method For Tunnel Rotary Drilling Based On Drill String Status Estimation, Yao Ningping, Wei Hongchao, Zhang Jinbao, Lu Chengda, Li Hao, Yao Yafeng, Ke Yougang, Zhang Youzhen
Coal Geology & Exploration
To address the issue in existing research where it is difficult to obtain bottom-hole drilling parameters while drilling, and to overcome the problem of low accuracy and insufficient improvement when optimizing rotary drilling operational parameters using only borehole data, an intelligent optimization method for near-horizontal tunnel rotary drilling based on drill string status is proposed. This involves constructing an in-hole state observer to estimate bottom-hole drilling parameter information. Firstly, the characteristics of rotary drilling in underground coal mine tunnels are analyzed, considering the constraints of actual drilling, and an optimization target evaluation method for mechanical drilling speed and drill bit …

Rate-Of-Penetration (Rop) Prediction Model Based On Formation Characteristics Of Extremely Thick Plastic Mudstone In South China Sea, Zeng Xiaolong, Li Qian, Wei Hongchao, Chen Jiahao, Zhu Haiyan
Coal Geology & Exploration
In terms of petroleum and gas resources, South China Sea is the important energy replacement area in China. However, most of the reservoirs are buried deep, and the strong plasticity of the formation under high confining pressure and the complex geological environment seriously affect the drilling efficiency. It is also very difficult to accurately predict the ROP. Hence, a set of intelligent ROP prediction model was established for the extremely thick mudstone formation with unique viscoelastic and strong plastic characteristics in South China Sea. The model took the actual data of 10 wells in an area of South China Sea …

Stress Field Of High-Temperature Wellbore Under Spray Cooling For Underground Coal Gasification, Tang Yang, Xie Na, Xiong Haoyu, He Yin, Huang Shunxiao
Coal Geology & Exploration
As a supplement to traditional physical coal mining technology, underground coal gasification (UCG) is a new generation of chemical coal mining technology. During the gasification, the wellbore of UCG production wells is subjected to the combined action of high temperature and internal pressure loads. Targeting the structural characteristics of the wellbore of UCG production wells, this study, based on the heat transfer theory, established a calculation model for the transient temperature of the wellbore under the cooling through annular spray water injection. By combining the wellbore pressure model, as well as the elasticity theory and the wall cylinder theory, this …

Dynamic Prediction Method Of Tunnel Water Inflow Based On Detailed Depiction Of Complex Geological Bodies, Du Yajun, Li Qingbo, Wan Weifeng, Yang Fengwei, Li Yazhe, Qian Hui
Coal Geology & Exploration
It is a challenge to accurately characterize the irregular geological bodies and underground structures such as inclined faults and inclined tunnels during the numerical simulation of tunnel water inflow prediction, and the prediction generally assumes that the tunnel excavation is completed instantaneously without considering the construction progress. A dynamic prediction method for tunnel water inflow based on precise characterization of complex geometric bodies was proposed by addressing the non-self-intersection and watertight issues required in the coupling process of three-dimensional (3D) geological models and 3D groundwater numerical models. Specifically, a sealed boundary interface of inclined tunnels, shafts, inclined faults and irregular …

Detection Of Small Objects In Open-Pit Coal Mine Stopes Using Uav Remote Sensing Images, Liu Mingrui, Che Ben, Dong Hongbo, Zhu Ruoli
Coal Geology & Exploration
Open-pit coal mine stopes witness frequent vehicle accidents due to their complex terrains. Therefore, accurately positioning vehicles in the stopes is critical to safe coal mining. To overcome the inaccurate positioning of small targets in the mining areas using Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing images, this study proposed an improved YOLOv7 model for object detection. First, to expedite the reasoning of the YOLOv7 network, the ELAN module in the original YOLOv7 model was improved by introducing partial convolution. Based on this, the eSE channel attention mechanism was combined to form the PConv-eSE convolution attention module. The purpose is to …

Combinatorially Orthogonal Paths, Sean A. Bailey, David E. Brown, Leroy Beaseley
Communications on Number Theory and Combinatorial Theory
Vectors x=(x1,x2,...,xn)T and y=(y1,y2,...,yn)T are combinatorially orthogonal if |{i:xiyi≠0}|≠1. An undirected graph G=(V,E) is a combinatorially orthogonal graph if there exists f:V→ℝn such that for any u,v∈V, uv∉E iff f(u) and f(v) are combinatorially orthogonal. We will show that every graph has a combinatorially orthogonal representation. We will show …
Series Expansions Of Lambert W And Related Functions, Jacob Imre
Series Expansions Of Lambert W And Related Functions, Jacob Imre
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
In the realm of multivalued functions, certain specimens run the risk of being elementary or complex
to a fault. The Lambert $W$ function serves as a middle ground in a way, being non-representable by elementary
functions yet admitting several properties which have allowed for copious research. $W$ utilizes the
inverse of the elementary function $xe^x$, resulting in a multivalued function with non-elementary
connections between its branches. $W_k(z)$, the solution to the equation $z=W_k(z)e^{W_k(z)}$
for a "branch number" $k \in \Z$, has both asymptotic and Taylor series for its various branches.
In recent years, significant effort has been dedicated to exploring …
Differentiating By Prime Numbers, Jack Jeffries
Differentiating By Prime Numbers, Jack Jeffries
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
It is likely a fair assumption that you, the reader, are not only familiar with but even quite adept at differentiating by x. What about differentiating by 13? That certainly didn’t come up in my calculus class! From a calculus perspective, this is ridiculous: are we supposed to take a limit as 13 changes? One notion of differentiating by 13, or any other prime number, is the notion of p-derivation discovered independently by Joyal [Joy85] and Buium [Bui96]. p-derivations have been put to use in a range of applications in algebra, number theory, and arithmetic geometry. Despite the wide range …

Acoustic levitation has become a crucial technique for contactless manipulation in several fields, particularly in biological applications. However, its application in the photonics field remains largely unexplored. In this study, we implement an affordable and innovative phased-array levitator that enables stable trapping in the air of micrometer dye-doped droplets, thereby enabling the creation of microlasers. For the first time, this paper presents a detailed performance of the levitated microlaser cavity, supported by theoretical analysis concerning the hybrid technology based on the combination of whispering-gallery modes and acoustic fields. The pressure field distribution inside the acoustic cavity is numerically solved and …

Analytic Distribution Of The Optimal Cross-Correlation Statistic For Stochastic Gravitational-Wave-Background Searches Using Pulsar Timing Arrays, Jeffrey S. Hazboun, Patrick M. Meyers, Joseph D. Romano, Xavier Siemens, Anne M. Archibald
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations
We show via both analytical calculation and numerical simulation that the optimal cross-correlation statistic (OS) for stochastic gravitational-wave-background (GWB) searches using data from pulsar timing arrays follows a generalized chi-squared (GX2) distribution—i.e., a linear combination of chi-squared distributions with coefficients given by the eigenvalues of the quadratic form defining the statistic. This observation is particularly important for calculating the frequentist statistical significance of a possible GWB detection, which depends on the exact form of the distribution of the OS signal-to-noise ratio ρˆ ≡ Aˆ 2 gw=σ0 in the absence of GW-induced cross correlations (i.e., the null distribution). Previous discussions of …
Enhancing Inter-Document Similarity Using Sub Max, Richard Imorobebh Igbiriki
Enhancing Inter-Document Similarity Using Sub Max, Richard Imorobebh Igbiriki
Theses and Dissertations
Document similarity, a core theme in Information Retrieval (IR), is a machine learning (ML) task associated with natural language processing (NLP). It is a measure of the distance between two documents given a set of rules. For the purpose of this thesis, two documents are similar if they are semantically alike, and describe similar concepts. While document similarity can be applied to multiple tasks, we focus our work on the accuracy of models in detecting referenced papers as similar documents using their sub max similarity. Multiple approaches have been used to determine the similarity of documents in regards to literature …

Tidal marshes build elevations by below- and aboveground organic and mineral soil processes. Marsh elevation and accre- tion data can be used to determine if marshes are keeping pace with sea-level rise. Using a network of 54 deep rod surface elevation tables with paired feldspar marker horizon plots, we tracked elevation and accretion trends across 16 marshes in California, USA. All sites had overall positive gains across years that included severe drought conditions and extreme rain events. Marsh elevation relative to tidal datum (z*) was the key predictor for elevation and accretion rates, with higher change rates at lower z* …

Regulation Of Regeneration In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Md Khairul Islam, Sai Teja Mummadi, Sanzhen Liu, Hairong Wei
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 2
We employed several algorithms with high efficacy to analyze the public transcriptomic data, aiming to identify key transcription factors (TFs) that regulate regeneration in Arabidopsis thaliana. Initially, we utilized CollaborativeNet, also known as TF-Cluster, to construct a collaborative network of all TFs, which was subsequently decomposed into many subnetworks using the Triple-Link and Compound Spring Embedder (CoSE) algorithms. Functional analysis of these subnetworks led to the identification of nine subnetworks closely associated with regeneration. We further applied principal component analysis and gene ontology (GO) enrichment analysis to reduce the subnetworks from nine to three, namely subnetworks 1, 12, and 17. …
Dynamics And Scaling Of Particle Streaks In High-Reynolds-Number Turbulent Boundary Layers, Tim Berk, Filippo Coletti
Dynamics And Scaling Of Particle Streaks In High-Reynolds-Number Turbulent Boundary Layers, Tim Berk, Filippo Coletti
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
Inertial particles in wall-bounded turbulence are known to form streaks, but experimental evidence and predictive understanding of this phenomenon is lacking, especially in regimes relevant to atmospheric flows. We carry out wind tunnel measurements to investigate this process, characterizing the transport of microscopic particles suspended in turbulent boundary layers. The friction Reynolds number Re𝜏 = O(104) allows for significant scale separation and the emergence of large-scale motions, while the range of viscous Stokes number St+ = 18–870 is relevant to the transport of dust and fine sand in the atmospheric surface layer. We …

Tidal Bed Stress Asymmetry And Sediment Transport In Estuaries, Austin Scott Hudson
Tidal Bed Stress Asymmetry And Sediment Transport In Estuaries, Austin Scott Hudson
Dissertations and Theses
Rivers and estuaries provide numerous ecological, economic, and cultural resources. The value of these resources is greatly influenced by sediment transport processes, which can be affected by human activities and climate variability. A key driver of sediment transport in tidal rivers and estuaries is tidal asymmetry of velocity and bed stress, which can manifest from both non-linear tidal interactions and linear interactions among astronomical tidal constituents.
In this study, an analytical framework is developed to examine and describe the dynamics of bed stress asymmetry in semidiurnal, diurnal, and mixed-tide estuaries (Chapter 1). While tidal velocity asymmetry has been previously analyzed, …

Fluorescent Molecular Rotors As Versatile In Situ Sensors For Protein Quantitation, Kevin Daus, Sorachat Tharamak, Wanchai Pluempanupat, Peter Galie, Maria A Theodoraki, Emmanuel A Theodorakis, Mary Alpaugh
Faculty Scholarship for the College of Science & Mathematics
Accurate protein quantitation is essential for many cellular mechanistic studies. Existing technology relies on extrinsic sample evaluation that requires significant volumes of sample as well as addition of assay-specific reagents and importantly, is a terminal analysis. This study exploits the unique chemical features of a fluorescent molecular rotor that fluctuates between twisted-to-untwisted states, with a subsequent intensity increase in fluorescence depending on environmental conditions (e.g., viscosity). Here we report the development of a rapid, sensitive in situ protein quantitation method using ARCAM-1, a representative fluorescent molecular rotor that can be employed in both non-terminal and terminal assays.
Forest Generating Functions Of Directed Graphs, Ewan Joaquin Kummel
Forest Generating Functions Of Directed Graphs, Ewan Joaquin Kummel
Dissertations and Theses
A spanning forest polynomial is a multivariate generating function whose variables are indexed over both the vertex and edge sets of a given directed graph. In this thesis, we establish a general framework to study spanning forest polynomials, associating them with a generalized Laplacian matrix and studying its properties. We introduce a novel proof of the famous matrix-tree theorem and show how this extends to a parametric generalization of the all-minors matrix-forest theorem. As an application, we derive explicit formulas for the recently introduced class of directed threshold graphs.
We prove that multivariate forest polynomials are, in general, irreducible and …

Investigation Of Electron Transfer In The Ksha-Kshb-R286a Protein Complex From Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Elyse Tavares
Honors Program Theses and Projects
With drug-resistant bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis being a serious public health problem, infected individuals have minimal treatment options. By investigating the electron transfer within 3-ketosteroid-9-hydroxylase (KshAB), a protein involved in the energy production pathway of this bacteria, it will allow for potential inhibitors of this enzyme to be designed as antibiotics against tuberculosis. The purpose of this project is to stop the interaction between the KshA and KshB complexes to prevent the bacteria from gaining energy by breaking down steroids like cholesterol. To achieve this goal, an arginine at the 286th position of the KshB protein was mutated to …

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) presents a critical global health challenge, and early detection is crucial for improving the 5-year survival rate. Recent medical imaging and computational algorithm advances offer potential solutions for early diagnosis. Deep learning, particularly in the form of convolutional neural networks (CNNs), has demonstrated success in medical image analysis tasks, including classification and segmentation. However, the limited availability of clinical data for training purposes continues to represent a significant obstacle. Data augmentation, generative adversarial networks (GANs), and cross-validation are potential techniques to address this limitation and improve model performance, but effective solutions are still rare for 3D …
