Exploring The Hot And Gaseous Universe From Infrared To X-Ray, Chamani Gunasekera Jan 2024

Exploring The Hot And Gaseous Universe From Infrared To X-Ray, Chamani Gunasekera

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

Over 90% of baryonic matter in the universe exists as astrophysical plasmas. The gas
is often far from thermodynamic equilibrium, so numerical non-equilibrium spectral
synthesis simulations are used to understand observations. cloudy simulates vari-
ous physical conditions, providing spectra predictions. This thesis aims to meet the
challenge of new observatories like the JWST (James Webb Space Telescope) and
XRISM (X-Ray Imaging Spectroscopy Mission). These simulations are no better
than the underlying atomic and molecular database and the fourth chapter details
a long-needed update to an evolving database. The predicted spectra are strongly
affected by the composition of the gas, which …

Techniques For Optimizing Neutron Beta Decay Particle Detection, Austin W. Nelsen Jan 2024

Techniques For Optimizing Neutron Beta Decay Particle Detection, Austin W. Nelsen

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

Over the last couple decades, use of free neutron beta decay (np + e- + νe) to extract the up-down quark transition element Vud has become competitive with more conventional Fermi decays. Extraction of Vud requires measurements of the vector to axial-vector coupling constant ratio λ and the free neutron lifetime τn. With a precise determination of Vud, the 2.8σ departure from CKM unitarity can be addressed.

Nab, located at the Spallation Neutron Source at ORNL, will measure the electron-neutrino momentum correlation coefficient a (which couples quadratically …

Spinning Spheroidal Components Of Disk Galaxies: Resonant Interactions With Stellar Bars, Xingchen Li Jan 2024

Spinning Spheroidal Components Of Disk Galaxies: Resonant Interactions With Stellar Bars, Xingchen Li

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

The majority of disk galaxies possess stellar bars, which are the main driver in the internal evolution of barred galaxies. Bars represent non-axisymmetric perturbations in the galactic disks, producing strong gravitational torques that facilitate angular momentum transfer from the disk to the spheroidal components, such as central stellar bulges and host dark matter (DM) halos. The redistribution of angular momentum in barred galaxies proceeds mainly via resonant interactions between the bar and orbits in the spheroids. The amount of angular momentum emitted or absorbed at each resonance depends on the mass distribution, density and spin in the spheroidal components. Thus, …

Development Of A Source To Detector Simulation Of The Los Alamos National Lab Neutron Electric Dipole Moment Experiment, Dillon Buskirk Jan 2024

Development Of A Source To Detector Simulation Of The Los Alamos National Lab Neutron Electric Dipole Moment Experiment, Dillon Buskirk

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

The Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) experiment is planning an increased precision measurement of the neutron’s permanent electric dipole moment. LANL nEDM expects to lower the statistical uncertainty to δdLANL = 2 × 10−27 e cm after a year of live-time, which puts a more stringent upper bound on the nEDM. This statistical uncertainty is an order of magnitude less than the current best measurement set by nEDM at PSI. To reach this goal, the LANL nEDM collaboration requires a simulation tool that can tackle optimization problems, investigate systematic effects, and provide mock data …

Development Of A Novel Beam-Type Neutron Lifetime Experiment Using Ultracold Neutrons, Nicholas Floyd Jan 2024

Development Of A Novel Beam-Type Neutron Lifetime Experiment Using Ultracold Neutrons, Nicholas Floyd

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

Precision measurements of the neutron lifetime are critical to tests of the Standard Model. The CKM quark mixing matrix has recently been shown to deviate from unitarity in the top row, motivating the development of alternative extractions of the first element. Complementary measurements of the neutron’s lifetime and decay correlations can be used to accomplish this.

While the reported neutron lifetime by the Particle Data Group is taken from ultracold neutron (UCN) measurements, a separate class of experiments suggest a value in four sigma disagreement, meriting further study. The goal of the UCNProBe experiment at Los Alamos National Laboratory is …

The Application Of Novel Machine Learning Algorithms To Study Multi-Dimensional Fragmentation Functions Of Hadrons In Jets At Star, Hannah A. Harrison-Smith Jan 2024

The Application Of Novel Machine Learning Algorithms To Study Multi-Dimensional Fragmentation Functions Of Hadrons In Jets At Star, Hannah A. Harrison-Smith

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

Hadronization, the process by which colored quarks and gluons shower from high energy collisions and recombine to form stable, experimentally-observable particles, is a fundamental aspect of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) that is not yet fully understood. Fragmentation functions, typically measured in electron-positron collisions, encapsulate this hadronization process well for quarks. Studying proton-proton collisions offers direct access to gluon fragmentation that other channels like electron-positron do not. Recent theoretical developments have proposed the study of hadronic showers in groupings called jets, introducing the concept of multi-dimensional jet fragmentation functions. This thesis presents the extraction of collinear and transverse momentum-dependent fragmentation functions for …

Precision Neutrino Interactions In And Beyond The Standard Model, Kaushik Borah Jan 2024

Precision Neutrino Interactions In And Beyond The Standard Model, Kaushik Borah

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

This dissertation investigates precision measurements of neutrino interactions within the framework of the Standard Model and explores potential extensions beyond it. Neutrinos, often referred to as ghostly particles due to their weak interactions and elusive nature, have long been a frontier in particle physics. Through detailed theoretical modeling and comparison with experimental data, this work focuses on improving our understanding of neutrino-nucleon cross-sections, nucleon form factors, and generalized neutrino interactions. The study begins with a comprehensive examination of the role of vector and axial-vector form factors in neutrino-nucleon scattering and their impact on the interpretation of neutrino oscillation data from …

Strategyproof Mechanisms For Group-Fair Obnoxious Facility Location Problems, Jiaqian Li, Minming Li, Hau Chan Jan 2024

Strategyproof Mechanisms For Group-Fair Obnoxious Facility Location Problems, Jiaqian Li, Minming Li, Hau Chan

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

We study the group-fair obnoxious facility location problems from the mechanism design perspective where agents belong to different groups and have private location preferences on the undesirable locations of the facility. Our main goal is to design strategyproof mechanisms that elicit the true location preferences from the agents and determine a facility location that approximately optimizes several group-fair objectives. We first consider the maximum total and average group cost (group-fair) objectives. For these objectives, we propose deterministic mechanisms that achieve 3-approximation ratios and provide matching lower bounds. We then provide the characterization of 2-candidate strategyproof randomized mechanisms. Leveraging the characterization, …

A Simple, Inexpensive Alkaline Method For Bacterial Dna Extraction From Environmental Samples For Pcr Surveillance And Microbiome Analyses, Abdulkarim Shwani, Bin Zuo, Adnan Alrubaye, Jiangchao Zhao, Douglas D. Rhoads

Poultry Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

DNA extraction for downstream molecular diagnostic applications can be an expensive, time-consuming process. We devised a method to quickly extract total bacterial DNA from environmental samples based on the sodium hydroxide lysis of cells with or without capture by magnetic beads for subsequent PCR or quantitative PCR. The final DNA extraction method using NaOH is extremely low-cost and can be completed in as little as 10 min at room temperature with dilution, or the DNA can be further purified using silica-coated paramagnetic beads. NaOH extraction was effective for Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria in samples from air, soil, sewage, food, laboratory …

Imagery from fixed, ground-based cameras is rich in qualitative and quantitative information that can improve stream discharge monitoring. For instance, time-lapse imagery may be valuable for filling data gaps when sensors fail and/or during lapses in funding for monitoring programs. In this study, we used a large image archive (> 40,000 images from 2012 to 2019) from a fixed, ground-based camera that is part of a documentary watershed imaging project (https://plattebasintimelapse.com/). Scalar image features were extracted from daylight images taken at one-hour intervals. The image features were fused with United States Geological Survey stage and discharge data as …

Life Cycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions In Maize No-Till Agroecosystems In Southern Brazil Based On A Long-Term Experiment, Guilherme Rosa Da Silva, Adam J. Liska, Cimelio Bayer

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Brazilian agriculture is constantly questioned concerning its environmental impacts, particularly greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This research study used data from a 34-year field experiment to estimate the life cycle GHG emissions intensity of maize production for grain in farming systems under no-tillage (NT) and conventional tillage (CT) combined with Gramineae (oat) and legume (vetch) cover crops in southern Brazil. We applied the Feedstock Carbon Intensity Calculator for modeling the “field-to-farm gate” emissions with measured annual soil N2O and CH4 emissions data. For net CO2 emissions, increases in soil organic C (SOC) were applied as a proxy, …

We make the case for building a permanent public-use platform for conducting and analyzing immersive interviews on the everyday lives of Americans. The American Voices Project (AVP)—a widely watched experiment with this new platform—provides important early evidence on its promise. The articles in this issue reveal that, although public-use interview datasets obviously cannot meet all research needs, they do provide new opportunities to study small or hidden populations, new or emerging social problems, reactions to ongoing social crises, submerged values and attitudes, and many other aspects of American life. We conclude that a permanent AVP platform would help build an …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

European starlings are one of the most abundant and problematic avian invaders in the world. From their native range across Eurasia and North Africa, they have been introduced to every continent except Antarctica. In 160 years, starlings have expanded into different environments throughout the world, making them a powerful model for understanding rapid evolutionary change and adaptive plasticity. Here, we investigate their spatiotemporal morphological variation in North America and the native range. Our dataset includes 1,217 specimens; a combination of historical museum skins and modern birds. Beak length in the native range has remained unchanged during the past 206 years, …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Raccoon rabies virus (RRV) has been managed using multiple vaccination strategies, including oral rabies vaccination and trap-vaccinate-release (TVR). Identifying a rabies vaccination strategy for an area is a nontrivial task. Vaccination strategies differ in the amount of effort and monetary costs required to achieve a particular level of vaccine seroprevalence (efficiency). Simulating host movement relative to different vaccination strategies in silico can provide a useful tool for exploring the efficiency of different vaccination strategies. We refined a previously developed individual-based model of raccoon movement to evaluate vaccination strategies for urban Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. We combined different oral rabies vaccination baiting …

Use Of Rhodamine B As A Biomarker In A Simulated Oral Vaccine Deployment Against Bovine Tuberculosis In White-Tailed Deer, David Dressel, Kurt Vercauteren, Michael Lavelle, Nathan P. Snow, Henry Campa Iii Jan 2024

Use Of Rhodamine B As A Biomarker In A Simulated Oral Vaccine Deployment Against Bovine Tuberculosis In White-Tailed Deer, David Dressel, Kurt Vercauteren, Michael Lavelle, Nathan P. Snow, Henry Campa Iii

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Introduction Free-ranging white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in northeastern lower Michigan, United States are a self-sustaining reservoir for bovine tuberculosis (bTB). Farm mitigation practices, baiting bans, and antlerless deer harvests have been ineffective in eliminating bTB in white-tailed deer and risks to cattle. The apparent prevalence has remained relatively constant in deer, prompting interest among wildlife researchers, managers, and veterinarians for an effective means of vaccinating deer against bTB. The commonly used human vaccine for bTB, Bacillus Calmette Guerin (BCG), is the primary candidate with oral delivery being the logical means for vaccinating deer.

Materials and methods We developed …

Identifying Priority Mitigation Areas For Human–Osprey Conflict, Natasha K. Murphy, Melanie R. Boudreau, Brian S. Dorr, Kate Slankard, Scott A. Rush

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Raptor nests on human‐built structures represent a significant source of conflict, as they can result in bird mortality, fires, or power outages due to falling nest materials or animals connecting with energized conductors. Power companies typically try to mitigate these conflicts to avoid service disruptions. Performing mitigation measures across all potentially problematic power infrastructure is generally not a practical solution given logistical, time, or budgetary constraints. Therefore, there is a need for quantitative, landscapescale tools to identify conflict risk and prioritize mitigation. We examined the influence of habitat and transmission infrastructure distribution on the potential risk of osprey (Pandion …

Efficacy Of An Inflatable Deterrent For Reducing New World Vulture Human‑Wildlife Conflict, Bryan M. Kluever, Betsy A. Evans, Noah M. Osterhoudt, Eric A. Tillman

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Increasing urbanization coupled with spatial expansion and numerical increase of New World vulture populations has engendered a rise in human-vulture conflict, creating a need for effective tools to mitigate vulture-related damage. Visual frightening devices that mimic the presence of human or other predators can be employed in human-vulture conflict scenarios to increase perceived risk by the pest species, thereby eliciting an antipredator behavioral response, such as fleeing. One visual frightening device, inflatable scarecrows, recently proved effective at reducing passerine attendance at feral swine feeders, but their effectiveness when directed at other species and conflict scenarios has varied. Our primary objective …

The rapid expansion of wild pigs (Sus scrofa) throughout the United States has been fueled by unlawful introductions, with invasive populations causing extensive crop losses, damaging native ecosystems, and serving as a reservoir for disease. Multiple states have passed laws prohibiting the possession or transport of wild pigs. However, genetic and phenotypic similarities between domestic pigs and invasive wild pigs—which overwhelmingly represent domestic pig and wild boar hybrids—pose a challenge for the enforcement of such regulations. We sought to exploit wild boar ancestry as a common attribute among the vast majority of invasive wild pigs as a means …

Fifteen different waterbird species (26.6%; n = 104) were seropositive. Of the adults, 25.4% (n = 52) showed a significantly higher T. gondii seroprevalence compared with juveniles (13.4%; n = 17); however, sex was not a significant factor.

Increased Bat Activity At Urban Water Sources: Implications For Cross-Species Transmission Of Bat Rabies To Mesocarnivores, Lias A. Hastings, Carol L. Chambers, David L. Bergman, Tad C. Theimer Jan 2024

Increased Bat Activity At Urban Water Sources: Implications For Cross-Species Transmission Of Bat Rabies To Mesocarnivores, Lias A. Hastings, Carol L. Chambers, David L. Bergman, Tad C. Theimer

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We examined the potential for urban water sources, specifically golf course ponds, to act as centers for rabies transmission from bats to mesocarnivores in the arid southwestern United States where surface water is often limited. Because residential housing can act as den and roost sites for both mesocarnivores and bats, we also examined the effect of housing density around water sources on activity. Using ultrasonic acoustic recorders to assess bat activity and camera traps to estimate mesocarnivore activity, we compared 14 pairs of wet and dry locations over two years by surveying twice during the summer, once prior to summer …

Experimental Assessment Of Laser Scarecrows For Reducing Avian Damage To Sweet Corn, Sean T. Manz, Kathryn E. Sieving, Rebecca N. Brown, Page E. Klug, Bryan M. Kluever Jan 2024

Experimental Assessment Of Laser Scarecrows For Reducing Avian Damage To Sweet Corn, Sean T. Manz, Kathryn E. Sieving, Rebecca N. Brown, Page E. Klug, Bryan M. Kluever

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Background

Birds damage crops, costing millions of dollars annually, and growers utilize a variety of lethal and nonlethal deterrents in an attempt to reduce crop damage by birds. We experimentally tested laser scarecrows for their effectiveness at reducing sweet corn (Zea mays) damage. We presented 18 captive flocks of free-flying European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) with fresh sweet corn ears distributed on two plots where laser and control treatments were alternated each day and allowed each flock to forage over 5 days. In 16 trials, fresh sweet corn ears were mounted on wooden sticks distributed from 0 …
