Coral capacity to tolerate low pH affects coral community composition and, ultimately, reef ecosystem function. Low pH submarine discharges (‘Ojo’; Yucatán, México) represent a natural laboratory to study plasticity and acclimatization to low pH in relation to ocean acidification. A previous >2‐year coral transplant experiment to ambient and low pH common garden sites revealed differential survivorship across species and sites, providing a framework to compare mechanistic responses to differential pH exposures. Here, we examined gene expression responses of transplants of three species of reef‐building corals (Porites astreoides, Porites porites and Siderastrea siderea) and their algal endosymbiont communities …

Achieving precise 6 degrees of freedom (6D) pose estimation of rigid objects from color images is a critical challenge with wide-ranging applications in robotics and close-contact aircraft operations. This study investigates key techniques in the application of YOLOv5 object detection convolutional neural network (CNN) for 6D pose localization of aircraft using only color imagery. Traditional object detection labeling methods suffer from inaccuracies due to perspective geometry and being limited to visible key points. This research demonstrates that with precise labeling, a CNN can predict object features with near-pixel accuracy, effectively learning the distinct appearance of the object due to perspective …

Summary
Genome-wide identity by descent (gwid) is an R package developed for the analysis of identity-by-descent (IBD) data pertaining to dichotomous traits. This package offers a set of tools to assess differential IBD levels for the two states of a binary trait, yielding informative and meaningful results. Furthermore, it provides convenient functions to visualize the outcomes of these analyses, enhancing the interpretability and accessibility of the results. To assess the performance of the package, we conducted an evaluation using real genotype data derived from the SNPs to investigate rheumatoid arthritis susceptibility from the Marshfield Clinic Personalized Medicine Research Project.

Flow And Stability Of Three-Dimensional Rotating Viscoelastic Jet, Daniel N. Riahi
Flow And Stability Of Three-Dimensional Rotating Viscoelastic Jet, Daniel N. Riahi
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
We consider rotationally driven nonlinear viscoelastic jet. In contrast to previous unrealistic planar studies with no gravity effect, we investigate here realistic three-dimensional jet with gravity effect. Using theoretical and computational methods, we develop models for such jet and its stability and determine the solutions. We find three-dimensional jet with gravity effect leads to faster and thinner jet. For jet arc length higher than its exit diameter, our calculation with typical parameter values shows that jet radius is smaller by a factor of more than 1.4 and jet speed is higher by factor of more than 2 as are compared …
Complexity, Entanglement And Codes In Quantum Field Theory, Nikolaos Angelinos
Complexity, Entanglement And Codes In Quantum Field Theory, Nikolaos Angelinos
Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy
In recent decades many deep connections between quantum information theory and quantum field theory have been unearthed. In this dissertation we study topics in high-energy physics through the lens of quantum information: 1) We develop connections between error-correcting codes and Narain conformal field theories. 2) We study the entanglement entropy of one-dimensional fermionic chains with long-range interactions. 3) We study the temperature dependence of Lanczos coefficients and Krylov complexity.

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy
This dissertation explores quantum information, the use of codes to describe quantum field theories, and introduces new concepts to characterize the dynamics of quantum many-body systems. The contributions of this dissertation are the following: 1) We constructed Narain Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) using additive codes, where the modular bootstrap constraints translate into algebraic conditions on the codes, extending previous approaches. This helps express key CFT data, including the torus partition function, in terms of codewords. We constructed optimal Narain CFTs for small central charges, and described CFT ensembles for asymptotically large central charge with large spectral gap. 2) We studied …

Seasonal reproduction can provide species with fitness advantages by allowing the birth of young to coincide with favorable environmental conditions, particularly in environments with high seasonal and intra-annual variation in these conditions. Seven of the eight species in the bear family (Ursidae) reproduce seasonally in both managed care and the wild; however, data for the eighth species, the sun bear (Helarctos malayanus), is unclear. Sun bears have been observed to reproduce throughout the year in managed care, yet currently there are no clear data of birth timing for wild sun bear cubs. Here we investigate the seasonality of …

Atlantic reef-building corals and coral reefs continue to experience extensive decline due to increased stressors related to climate change, disease, pollution, and numerous anthropogenic threats. To understand the impact of ocean warming and reef loss on the estimated extinction risk of shallow water Atlantic reef-building scleractinians and milleporids, all 85 valid species were reassessed under the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria, updating the previous Red List assessment of Atlantic corals published in 2008. For the present assessment, individual species declines were estimated based on the modeled coral cover loss (1989–2019) and projected onset of annual severe bleaching events (2020–2050) …

Artificial intelligence (“AI”) increasingly is used to make important decisions that affect individuals and society. As governments and corporations use AI more pervasively, one of the most troubling trends is that developers so often design it to be a “black box.” Designers create AI models too complex for people to understand or they conceal how AI functions. Policymakers and the public increasingly sound alarms about black box AI. A particularly pressing area of concern has been criminal cases, in which a person’s life, liberty, and public safety can be at stake. In the United States and globally, despite concerns that …

Chirality Determination Using Three-Wave Mixing Microwave Spectroscopy, Nicole Taylor Moon
Chirality Determination Using Three-Wave Mixing Microwave Spectroscopy, Nicole Taylor Moon
Doctoral Dissertations
"Rotational spectroscopy has established itself as a reliable gas-phase spectroscopic technique for the structural determination of molecules. This reliability has stemmed from both advancements in microwave technology and a willingness from the community to push the boundaries of the field. In this dissertation, the boundaries are tested in both how well the technique can determine the structure of molecules exhibiting large amplitude motion and through chirality determination. The first half of this dissertation explores the use of deep averaging to determine the structure of silicon containing molecules in collaboration with Dr. Guirgis from the College of Charleston. For each of …

A series of catalysts were synthesized starting with isolated metal complexes (MEn) with a central metal core (M = Co, Ni, Cu, and Cr) through molecular clusters, to bulk nanostructured solids of similar M-E coordination. Bis(dichalcogenoimidodiphosphinato) were employed as ligands in the metal complexes, and anionic chalcogen (E = S, Se, and …
Highly Dipole-Parallel Aligned Nonlinear Optical Organic Molecular Crystalline Materials: Rational Design, Experimental And Theoretical Studies Of Supramolecular Structures And Non-Covalent Interactions, Harmeet Singh Bhoday
Doctoral Dissertations
Highly dipole-parallel aligned donor-acceptor substituted organic molecules are attractive for a wide array of applications, including nonlinear optics. However, only a limited number of crystals are known to adopt polar non-centrosymmetric space groups. The concepts guiding the fabrication of these polar materials have been described. The study focused on unsymmetrical donor-acceptor substituted azines and butadiene's. An improved design over (MeO, Y)-azines led to the realization of three crystals perfectly aligned in dipole parallel orientation for (PhO, Y)-azines with Y = Cl, Br, I, and one nearly perfectly aligned crystal for Y = F (Paper I). The unique bonding properties associated …

Integrating Machine Learning (ML) techniques into Vehicular Adhoc Networks (VANETs) provides promising features in autonomous driving and ITS applications. In this paper, DSRC data is used to evaluate the effectiveness of different ML models, including Naive Bayes, Random Forest, KNN, and Gradient Boosting, in normal and adversarial scenarios. Since the dataset is relatively imbalanced, the Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE) is employed for sampling, and defensive distillation for improving model resilience to adversarial perturbations. From the results, it is clear that models such as Gradient Boosting and Random Forest show high accuracy in both cases, thus showing the potential of …

This study proposes an optimized machine learning model (ML) based on BPSO for LD classification using a shared public dataset from kaggle Indicates to liver patients from India. The paper used six ML models such as Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Dummy Classifier (DC), Extra Trees Classifier (ET), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), and Logistic Regression (LT) to evaluate the performance. Through observations we detected that ET achieved an accuracy of 79.82%. The BPSO hyperparameter optimization optimized ET to enhance accuracy to reach 85%. The paper used …
Brown Thrasher (Toxostoma Rufum) Habitat Preferences In Pine Barrens, Shrublands, And Agricultural Areas In New England, Alec Woolf
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Early successional habitat and related species are in decline in the Northeastern United States. One species of shrubland bird that is declining in the northeast is the Brown Thrasher, considered a species of conservation concern in several states such as New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Vermont, and New Jersey. However, few studies have focused on examining Brown Thrasher habitat preferences. The purpose of this study was to evaluate Brown Thrasher associations with early successional habitat adjacent to farmland, within deciduous forests, and within pine barrens. I conducted systematic point count surveys with playback to assess thrasher occupancy and …

The combined fit of the measured energy spectrum and shower maximum depth distributions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays is known to constrain the parameters of astrophysical models with homogeneous source distributions. Studies of the distribution of the cosmic-ray arrival directions show a better agreement with models in which a fraction of the flux is non-isotropic and associated with the nearby radio galaxy Centaurus A or with catalogs such as that of starburst galaxies. Here, we present a novel combination of both analyses by a simultaneous fit of arrival directions, energy spectrum, and composition data measured at the Pierre Auger Observatory. The …
Extraction Of Capsaicin Using The Polyol Induced Extraction (Pie) Method, Orlando Herrera
Extraction Of Capsaicin Using The Polyol Induced Extraction (Pie) Method, Orlando Herrera
All Student Theses and Dissertations
Polyol-induced extraction (PIE) is an extraction technique for separating organic solvents from water, using glycerol and polyol as separating agents. Glycerol binds water releasing the organic solvent as a separate liquid phase. this thesis, investigates how the PIE process may be used to separate caffeine and capsaicin. When acetonitrile and water are used as a 1:1 solvent mixture, two immiscible phases are created upon addition of the polyol, glycerol. Initially, for purposes of training on the PIE method, the studies primarly began with the extraction of pure caffeine. Using a 1:1 mixture of acetonitrile and water, 20 m/v % glycerol, …

Analyzing soft interval data for uncertainty quantification has attracted much attention recently. Within this context, regression methods for interval data have been extensively studied. As most existing works focus on linear models, it is important to note that many problems in practice are nonlinear in nature and the development of nonlinear regression tools for interval data is crucial. This paper proposes an interval-valued random forests model that defines the splitting criterion of variance reduction based on an L2 type metric in the space of compact intervals. The model simultaneously considers the centers and ranges of the interval data as …

This report focuses on seven water quality measurements taken at 43 different depths on the Bear Lake, Utah-Idaho for the months of June - November in the years 2018 - 2023. These measurements create a high-dimensional dataset on which we apply state-of-the-art machine learning (ML) techniques to look for low-dimensional structure in the data. A similar effort was made for weather measurements taken near the lake. Our analysis reveals that water quality measurements tend to cluster (i.e., group together) by year, while weather measurements tend to cluster by time of the year. This in mind, we explore potential drivers of …

Let G be a finite group with the identity e and t ∈ N. In this dissertation, we study perfect codes in a t-Cayley graph of G. Let H be a subgroup of G and k ∈ {1, . . . , t}. We have a necessary and sufficient condition for a collection Ω of subsets of G such that H × {1, . . . , k} is a perfect code in t-Cayley graph Cay(G× {1, . . . , t}, Ω). In addition, we obtain criterions for determining if H × {1, . . . , t} is …

In the contemporary digital age, social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube serve as vital channels for individuals to express ideas and connect with others. Despite fostering increased connectivity, these platforms have inadvertently given rise to negative behaviors, particularly cyberbullying. While extensive research has been conducted on high-resource languages such as English, there is a notable scarcity of resources for low-resource languages like Bengali, Arabic, Tamil, etc., particularly in terms of language modeling. This study addresses this gap by developing a cyberbullying text identification system called BullyFilterNeT tailored for social media texts, considering Bengali as a test case. The …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Renewable energy is crucial for meeting global energy needs while protecting the environment. Unlike fossil fuels, renewable sources like solar, wind, and biomass are sustainable and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Biogas production, a vital part of biomass energy, converts organic waste into clean fuel through anaerobic digestion. This process generates energy, manages waste, reduces landfill use, and cuts methane emissions, promoting sustainability and energy independence. This study investigates the two-stage thermophilic anaerobic digestion of rice straw and vegetable residues for biogas production, focusing on the effects of different pretreatment methods, optimal mixing ratios, and organic loadings. The research aims to …
