This chapter shares context, assignment details, and impact of revisions of a research journal assignment in our first-year writing program at a mid-sized private university in the Midwest. With the rise of access to large language processing models like ChatGPT in Spring 2023, we reviewed our curriculum to consider what assignments might be most vulnerable to Al-generated writing. This essay describes ways the specter of Al altered interactions with students in a first-year composition course and how the response speaks to the broader impact of generative Al on underserved populations-especially in the sense that large language models and writing instruction can both affirm center/dominant discourses, values, and practices. The essay argues that the emergence of Al should shift writing instruction for "at-risk" and other marginalized student populations into post-product space. In such space, course work emphasizes students' negotiations with the expectations of higher education's hidden curriculum alongside the finished products that Al can now always already provide.

This essay shares the findings of a Spring 2023 honors composition course in which students conducted their own primary research project to investigate the uses and limitations of ChatGPT for first-year writers. By experimenting with integrating ChatGPT into various stages of their writing and revision processes, the students identified the strengths and weaknesses of the writing tool. Then, they observed and interviewed faculty as they graded different versions of essay drafts with varying levels of ChatGPT assistance. The chapter discusses some ethical considerations for teaching and generative Al in higher education with a focus on large language models like ChatGPT. The Impact Of Fluorination On The Volatility Of A Series Of Lanthanide Complexes, Kh Mahfuzul Alam

Volatile lanthanides have been proposed for applications such as chemical vapor deposition precursors and facilitating f-element separations. The latter is motivated by their broad use in technological applications. In collaboration with synthetic chemists, we studied Ln-complexes with functionalized forms of the bulky tris[(4-hydroxy-pentenylidene-2-imino)ethyl]amine (TRAC) ligand. Five ligands, labeled Yb(CH3,CH3TRAC), Yb(CH3,CF3TRAC), Yb(CF3,CF3TRAC), Yb(CF3,C3F7TRAC) and Nd(tbu,C3F7TRAC) were synthesized and volatile Ln complexes were obtained. However, the temperature at which they sublime was not sufficiently low for industrial applications. Therefore, this work examined the experimentally characterized Yb(CH3,CH3TRAC), Yb(CH3,CF3TRAC), Yb(CF3,CF3TRAC), Yb(CF3,C3F7TRAC) and Nd(tbu,C3F7TRAC) in detail. The present study focuses on the technique of hardness removal by using a novel reactor performing an electrocoagulation (EC) process. The variation of alkalinity is also recorded. Continuous flow experiments were conducted for Total Hardness (TH) removal using a transparent plastic reactor using aluminum plate electrodes that have holes so that the water flows through the plates in a zigzag way. This dissertation describes two distinct projects: 1) hollow Mn3O4 nanoparticles for selective oxidation of alkenes with O2, and 2) investigation of chloro[2-(mesityl(quinoline-8-yl-κN)boryl]-3,5-dimethyl-phenyl}methyl-κC)palladium(II) for activation of C-F bonds in aryl fluorides. Hollow Mn3O4 nanoparticles were synthesized from the galvanic reaction between Cu2+ and MnO nanocrystals. The hollow Mn3O4 particles were characterized with transmission electron microscopy and powder X-ray diffraction. The particles have diameter of 31 nm and a hollow cavity of 16 nm. We investigated the role of the hollow Mn3O4 nanoparticles in the selective oxidation of organic substrates with molecular oxygen. In the face of escalating climate threats, the conservation of whale species has become increasingly critical. Traditional acoustic monitoring methods, burdened by extensive pre-processing and post-processing, need more adaptability and efficiency for effective marine mammal surveillance. This study introduces DeepWhaleNet, a novel deep-learning framework tailored for Underwater Passive Acoustic Monitoring (UPAM). DeepWhaleNet is designed to streamline whale detection by directly analyzing raw log-power spectrograms, thus extracting essential acoustic features to conserve these endangered species.
