Evaluating Reclaimed Mines And Heavy Metal Soil Contamination, Torin A. Matthews
Evaluating Reclaimed Mines And Heavy Metal Soil Contamination, Torin A. Matthews
ATU Scholars Symposium
Arkansas has a rich history of lead and zinc mining. While there are still some active mines, many historical mines have been abandoned and/or reclaimed. Although most reclamation procedures result in the burial and containment of target minerals, accessory minerals and elements can be leached out of waste materials/tailings piles and include heavy metals (i.e., Pb, As, Cd). We aim to evaluate the soil and watershed of a few abandoned/reclaimed mines in Pope County, AR, for the presence of heavy metals/source minerals. Soil and stream sediment geochemistry will be conducted using a portable x-ray fluorescence analyzer. Field work and sampling …

Analysis Of Rabies Neutralizing Antibody Titers In The Feline Population Of Winona County, Olivia M. Hendrickson, Jensen K. Christensen
Research & Creative Achievement Day
Canine rabies vaccination, vital for both animal and human health, is well studied and understood. In contrast, our understanding of feline rabies vaccinations, particularly with those that have a compromised immune status, is much less comprehensive. The purpose of this project is to enhance our current knowledge of feline vaccination states through a surveillance study on the feline rabies antibody titer in Winona County's cat population. Specifically, we seek to explore the relationship between an individual feline's immune status and their active anti-rabies antibody titer. To achieve this, we conducted a bicinchoninic acid (BCA) protein assay to determine the total …

Investigating Chemotherapeutic Resistance In Glioblastoma Multiforme A, Katrina M. Yaeger
Research & Creative Achievement Day
Glioblastoma (GBM) multiforme A is a highly variable, grade four cancer that affects the glial tissues of the brain and spinal cord. Cancer cells, including GBM, have purine metabolism markers that make them distinguishable for biochemical research, marked through the rate limiting step in the conversion of inosine monophosphate (IMP) to guanosine triphosphate (GTP), catalyzed by inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH). Cell cultures for both 3T3 cells, used to study normal cell cycles, and GBM cells were grown and replicated, until sufficient cells existed to extract the desired proteins. These proteins were then run through a gel electrophoresis apparatus, followed by …

Uncharted: Measuring Beyond The Inner Galaxy, Carly J. Fitzgerald, Sammy Schneider, Landyn Schroeder
Research & Creative Achievement Day
My goal in conducting my research was to measure the speed of matter in the Milky Way galaxy using CHART -- the Completely Hackable Amateur Radio Telescope is an inexpensive, constructable telescope used to detect radio frequency waves in the galaxy. Using these waves and the doppler shift equation, I was able to measure the velocity of hydrogen gas in the inner galaxy. In doing this successfully, I was able to graph the relationship between the velocity and radius which is the rotational curve of the inner galaxy. I then collected and used additional data to calculate the rotational curve …

The expansion of small-scale gold mining impacts environmental health and socioeconomic. Research in Bombana District, one of the gold mining centers in eastern Indonesia, was conducted to explore perceptions of the impact of small-scale gold mining on human health and attitudes towards environmental conservation activities related to small-scale gold mining activities. This research uses a quantitative approach with univariate tests to identify respondent characteristics, bivariate tests (Chi-square) to test relationships and frequency differences, and multivariate analysis (regression) to test the direction and magnitude of the relationship. The perception of the impact of small-scale gold mining on human health was not …
Developing An Enzymatic Assay For Wine Analysis, Taylor M. Pagel
Developing An Enzymatic Assay For Wine Analysis, Taylor M. Pagel
Research & Creative Achievement Day
During malolactic fermentation (MLF), malic acid is fermented into lactic acid by the bacteria Oenococcus oeni. During this process, malic acid is then converted into lactic acid, converting sour flavors in the wine to buttery. Here we present an enzymatic method to determine the malate/lactate ratio of wines during MLF. Fresh juice samples had detectable amounts of malate, while wine samples had mixed results, as expected. MLF was initiated in a freshly fermented pre-MLF sample of St. Pepin wine and a decreasing trend of malate over time was detected, as predicted. This was compared to increasing levels of lactate in …

Techniques To Detect Fake Profiles On Social Media Using The New Age Algorithms – A Survey, A K M Rubaiyat Reza Habib, Edidiong Elijah Akpan
ATU Scholars Symposium
This research explores the growing issue of fake accounts in Online Social Networks [OSNs]. While platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook foster connections, their lax authentication measures have attracted many scammers and cybercriminals. Fake profiles conduct malicious activities, such as phishing, spreading misinformation, and inciting social discord. The consequences range from cyberbullying to deceptive commercial practices. Detecting fake profiles manually is often challenging and causes considerable stress and trust issues for the users. Typically, a social media user scrutinizes various elements like the profile picture, bio, and shared posts to identify fake profiles. These evaluations sometimes lead users to conclude …

Late 3d Transition Metal Complexes Of Bis(Diphenylphosphino)Methane Dichalcogenide Ligands, Connor J. Lehner
Research & Creative Achievement Day
Complexes of bis(diphenylphosphino)methane dichalcogenides (dppmE2, E = O, S, Se) have been prepared for Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) by combination with respective nitrate salts. These ligands are relatively unexplored for 1st row transition metals – with no existing reports of metal complexes for dppmSe2. All obtained complexes were paramagnetic precluding characterization by NMR spectroscopy. An array of methods have been employed to ascertain the structural and electronic forms of all obtained complexes as both tetrahedral and octahedral geometries, corresponding to systems with two or three ligands, respectively, are plausible. Additionally, Co(II) complexes, as d7 systems, could be found in either …

Genetic Association In Entylia Carinata Using Random Forest Classification, Caden J. Harper
Research & Creative Achievement Day
The goal of this research was to identify locations in the genome of the Entylia carinata, known as the treehopper, that are associated with anomalous behavior exhibited by the species. Treehoppers are phytophagous insects and are shown to feed, reproduce, and rear their young on specific aster species. Observation has shown that the insects will disregard potential mates in close proximity in favor of those that originate from the same plant species as themselves. This behavior suggests genetic separation in the species based on plant nativity and warrants genetic analysis. Machine learning offers an effective genetic association technique due to …

Anomaly Detection With Spiking Neural Networks (Snn), Shruti Bhandari, Vyshnavi Gogineni
ATU Scholars Symposium
Abstract:
Anomaly detection, the identification of rare or unusual patterns that deviate from normal behavior, is a fundamental task with wide-ranging applications across various domains. Traditional machine learning techniques often struggle to effectively capture the complex temporal dynamics present in real-world data streams. Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs), inspired by the spiking nature of biological neurons, offer a promising approach by inherently modeling temporal information through precise spike timing. In this study, we investigate the use of Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) for detecting anomalies or unusual patterns in data. We propose an SNN model that can learn what constitutes normal …

The results were overall positive in these testing areas.
Finding Combinatorial Patterns In Real Valued Omics Data, Kenneth Smith
Finding Combinatorial Patterns In Real Valued Omics Data, Kenneth Smith
Dissertations
Precision medicine is a healthcare approach which tailors disease prevention and treatment to an individual, based on their genetics, environment, lifestyle, and physiological state. These factors interact to produce biological changes that can be measured to produce data called omics, and include genomics, lipidomics, and proteomics. Despite the abundance of omics data and analysis techniques, researchers still struggle to identify biological findings that replicate across data sets and translate into clinical applications. In this dissertation, we employ combinatorial optimization techniques to improve upon three steps in the precision medicine analysis pipeline: 1) data cleaning, 2) community detection, and 3) feature …

Exact Treatment Of Weak Dark Matter-Baryon Scattering For Linear-Cosmology Observables, Y. Ali-Haïmoud, S. S. Gandhi, Tristan L. Smith
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works
Elastic scattering of dark matter (DM) particles with baryons induce cosmological signals that may be detectable with modern or future telescopes. For DM-baryon scattering cross sections scaling with negative powers of relative velocity, 𝜎𝜒𝑏(𝑣) ∝𝑣⁻²,𝑣⁻⁴, such interactions introduce a momentum-exchange rate that is nonlinear in DM-baryon bulk relative velocities, thus not amenable for inclusion as-is into standard linear cosmological Boltzmann codes. Linear Ansätze have been adopted in past works, but their accuracy is unknown as they do not arise from first-principles derivations. In this work, for the first time, we construct a rigorous framework for computing linear-cosmology observables …

Determining Reading Complexity Using Regression Models, Joshua Talamayan
Determining Reading Complexity Using Regression Models, Joshua Talamayan
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Reading is an essential skill when pursuing academic success. In order to assist students in developing their critical reading skills, it is essential to offer texts that are both within their capability, yet challenging enough to push them beyond their boundaries. At the moment, the majority of excerpts are matched to readability scores utilizing tools such as the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level scoring in order to determine reader level. The core issue with reading scores structured around the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level scoring is that the scoring process is not readily available to the public while also lacking validation studies. In this …
Radiative Cooling For Energy-Efficient Power Generation, Rickia Hanna
Radiative Cooling For Energy-Efficient Power Generation, Rickia Hanna
Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
This thesis examined radiative cooling on a small scale using a hybrid photovoltaic/radiative cooling model system, to determine its efficiency for large-scale power generation. Radiative cooling is concerned with heat transfer and this thesis’s main goal is to harness that heat energy to produce electricity. The efficiency of the system was tested using various light sources at different angles and total power output. The testing was done several times and there proved to be a proportional relationship between light intensity and current output. However, due to the performance threshold of the PTEC module, the component of the system used to …
Splines On Cayley Graphs Of The Symmetric Group, Nathan Lesnevich
Splines On Cayley Graphs Of The Symmetric Group, Nathan Lesnevich
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
A spline is an assignment of polynomials to the vertices of a graph whose edges are labeled by ideals, where the difference of two polynomials labeling adjacent vertices must belong to the corresponding ideal. The set of splines forms a ring. We consider spline rings where the underlying graph is the Cayley graph of a symmetric group generated by a collection of transpositions. These rings generalize the GKM construction for equivariant cohomology rings of flag, regular semisimple Hessenberg, and permutohedral varieties. These cohomology rings carry two actions of the symmetric group S_n whose graded characters are both of general interest …

Computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis And Empirical Evaluation Of Carboxymethylcellulose/Alginate 3d Bioprinting Inks For Screw-Based Microextrusion, Sungmin Lee, Minjae Son, Juo Lee, Iksong Bun, Jin-Woo Kim, Jungsil Kim, Hoon Seonwoo
Biological and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Three-dimensional microextrusion bioprinting technology uses pneumatics, pistons, or screws to transfer and extrude bioinks containing biomaterials and cells to print biological tissues and organs. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis can simulate the flow characteristics of bioinks in a control volume, and the effect on cell viability can be predicted by calculating the physical quantities. In this study, we developed an analysis system to predict the effect of a screw-based dispenser system (SDS) on cell viability in bioinks through rheological and CFD analyses. Furthermore, carboxymethylcellulose/alginate-based bioinks were used for the empirical evaluation of high-viscous bioinks. The viscosity of bioinks was determined …
Advanced Nano-Drug Delivery Systems In The Treatment Of Ischemic Stroke, Jiajie Zhang, Zhong Chen, Qi Chen
Advanced Nano-Drug Delivery Systems In The Treatment Of Ischemic Stroke, Jiajie Zhang, Zhong Chen, Qi Chen
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
In recent years, the frequency of strokes has been on the rise year by year and has become the second leading cause of death around the world, which is characterized by a high mortality rate, high recurrence rate, and high disability rate. Ischemic strokes account for a large percentage of strokes. A reperfusion injury in ischemic strokes is a complex cascade of oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, immune infiltration, and mitochondrial damage. Conventional treatments are ineffective, and the presence of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) leads to inefficient drug delivery utilization, so researchers are turning their attention to nano-drug delivery systems. Functionalized nano-drug …
