The electrolytic refining process, while usually considered an auxiliary process used in conjunction with pyrometallurgical extraction, deserves a special niche in the complex metallurgy of copper. The development of electrolytic copper refining, for example, is largely responsible for the prominence of the electrical industry. Conversely, it could be stated that the electrical industry played an important part in the development of the copper industry.

A "camera" containing thirty-six nuclear plates was carried into the upper atmosphere to an altitude of twelve miles by a free balloon flight. These plates were arranged in four groups separated by successively thicker layers of steel so that nuclear events under different amounts of matter could be observed.

After recovery of the equipment these plates were developed and examined under the microscope. Four plates were selected for intensive investigation, and data was collected on the tracks found in the areas examined.

In nuclear magnetic resonance absorption work, the detection of the absorption of energy by protons situated in a steady strong magnetic field and subject to a weak radiofrequency (RF) magnetic field is attempted. The protons are present in a sample placed inside an RF coil. A radiofrequency current, present in this coil, produces a rapidly oscillating magnetic field which is capable of supplying energy to the system of protons in the steady strong magnetic field. This absorption of energy by the protons alters their relative numerical distribution among the energy levels available to them.

For years it has been known that certain cyclic derivatives of aliphatic acids show hormone activity as growth regulators for some plants, and popular acceptance and application of the regulators has been remarkably rapid. Two commercially available growth regulating substances are indoleacetic acid and phenylacetic acid. Others also include indolebutyric acid and naphthaleneacetic acids (13). There are also certain phenoxy derivatives of acetic acid such as 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (commonly called 2,4 D), which have specific destructive effects to growing plants. The lack of a convenient method for the synthesis of m-alkylphenols has long been recognized by organic chemists. Within recent years the study of the physiological properties of these compounds and their derivatives, particularly the curare analogues, has caused much more concern to be placed upon a satisfactory method of synthesis. The problem of their synthesis offered an interesting study in synthetic organic chemistry. Both groupd, the alkyl group and the hydroxyl group of a meta-alkylated phenol, direct to the ortho and para positions. The Livingston formation is a thick succession of late Cretaceous lava flows, tuffs, and bedded water-laid volcanic detritus 200 miles long and 100 miles wide lying along the eastern margin of the Rocky Mountains in western Montana from Augusta to Yellowstone Park. It differs markedly within short distances in lithologic character and sequences, and the total thickness may exceed one mile in some places.

When examined petrographically the granites of Oklahoma show a marked similarity to the granites of South­eastern Missouri. The same heavy accessory mineral suites are present in the granites of both regions and include: fluorite, zircon, apatite, titanite and epidote. This similarity was further shown by the actual correlation of the heavy mineral suites by types, these types being, based on the heavy mineral distributions of the Missouri Granites.

This thesis is concerned with the beneficiation of an oxidized lead ore. Emphasis was placed upon concentration by flotation rather than by gravity methods, although some investigation was made with the Wilfley shaking table. The concentration of lead minerals received most consideration in the problem, but wherever possible attempts were made to increase the silver and gold concentration along with the lead.

The use of foraminifera in the determination of geologic age, and in the correlation of strata, is one of the most important techniques in oil field stratigraphic studies. The petroleum industry in many regions relies on these microscopic life forms to determine the positions of oil-bearing horizons and to determine the tops of beds. In northern Montana the Colorado group of strata, a series of about 2,000 feet of dense, dark similar shales, is known to contain foraminifers.

For the past twenty-five centuries man's mastery of nature has been based largely on his ability to produce and work iron into implements, tools, and machines. This has been due to the relatively simple task of converting abundant iron ores to metallic iron. No other common metal has the durability of iron. Aluminum has sometimes been called the second most important structural metal, but its extreme softness, even in its alloys, and low melting point have barred it from heavy duty applications. Potassium is one of the essential plant nutrient elements. It is used by plants in the synthesis and distribution of carbohydrates (25)2 and in the formation of proteins and oils. Potassium also seems to exert many of its effects by influencing enzymatic activity in cells.

Potassium occurs as the monovalent cation on plant cells and undoubtedly exerts important effects upon such phnomona as the permiability of the cytoplasmic membranes and hydration of protoplasma. Plants assimilate potassium either from the soil solution or directly from the exchange complex.
