An ester may be defined as the reaction product of an acid and an alcohol. Eaters are formed by both mineral and organic acids. The esters of the mineral acids differ widely in their physical and chemical properties because in general there is little similarity between the mineral acids. A different situation exists with the organic acid esters. These organic acids exist in groups, called homologous series, the difference between the individual acids being only the number of carbon atoms in the acid and the configuration of the carbon chain. Traditionally, radiation of those wavelengths produced by a potential of from 2 to 25kv. has been classified as "Grenz" or "soft" x-rays. The peculiar property of this radiation is its low penetrating power. While being transparent to more energetic radiation, animal tissue and similar materials are sufficiently opaque to Grenz rays as to be studied in detail. Since the radiation is of the continuous type, it can be made soft enough to reveal any object, providing, of course, that the tube window and object medium be not opaque. Treadwell states in his text, Analytical Chemistry, Volume II, that "the only method for examining cyanates consists in determining the amount of carbon and nitrogen present by combustion." A review of the available literature shows that, although this is not literally true, a procedure for this quantitative determination of small amounts of cyanates in the presence of interfering substances is lacking.

The first method used to prepare 2-imidazolines was through the reaction of aromatic aldehydes with ammonia. Amarin, which is known as 2,4,5-triphenyl-2-imidazoline, was the first compound reported to be prepared in this manner. This type of reaction has since been widely studied 2,3,4,5,6 in connection with the preparation of 2,4,5-triarylimidazolines. Furfural and ammonia have also been reported to react in a similar manner. Amarin has also been obtained from the reaction of a mixture of benzil, ammonia, and benzaldehyde.

In connection with other research work in the physics department at the University of New Mexico it became of interest to make a detailed study of a resistance-capacitance couples low-pass filter which incorporate inverse feed-back. In order to determine the effect of the inverse feed-back on the filters, calculations are made on circuits with and without feed-back. Response curves are calculated for step-wave inputs and for sine-wave inputs, and these calculated curves then compared with experimental response curves.

In general there exist in the energy level scheme of many of the elements, transitions which give rise to the liberation of energy in the visible or near visible spectra. This situation gave rise to the hope that a gaseous element could be selected such that upon being excited or ionized by charged particle radiation, the predominant transitions to lower energy levels could be detected by photographic means. If a means of detecting these transitions could be made sufficiently sensitive, one could then hope to detect very low radiation intensities of charged particles. More than 3000 years ago, men began quenching and tem­pering tools to improve their physical properties. The an­cient people found that iron was easier to shape and form in a heated condition. Charcoal was used as the fuel, and when the shaping process was completed, the smiths cooled the piece in the most obvious way, quenching in water. Quite un­intentionally, these people stumbled on the process for im­proving the properties of iron, and the art of blacksmithing began.

In this investigation the ortho substituted phenols used were o-cresol, o-chlorophenol, o-hydroxybenzaldehyde, salicylic acid, methyl salicylate, ethyl salicylate, 8-hydroxyquinoline, o-cyclohexyl phenol, o-octyl phenol, and o-nitrophenol. One member of the group, o-benzylphenol, was not obtainable at the time of the investigation. The bactericidal, germicidal and fungicidal activities of the iodinated ortho substituted phenols were not determined in this investigation due to lack of time. In addition, the investigator has not had experience in bacteriology or mycology and feels that such an investigation should be carried out by someone with experience in that field.

Twenty-four alloys, at 5 weight per cent or smaller intervals, were investigated by the thermal method. Very low temperatures had to be attained, because most of the alloy melts supercooled remarkably. Analysis showed only a liquidus and solidus line, and the solidus temperature was the same for each alloy.

In 1940, Bell, Goodman, and Whitehead (1) reported a survey on the radioactivity of sedimentary rocks and associated petroleum. In 1944, w. L. Russell (10) reported on the total gamma ray activity of sedimentary rocks as indicated by Geiger-Mueller Counter determination. Lastly, in 1949, M. W. Johnston (5) made a survey of radioactivity of oilwell drilling fluid with depth of wells. This thesis presents details relating to the discovery of three meteorites, as well as information concerning their acquisition, description, and mineralogy. These three meteorites are the Lalande, New Mexico chondrite (E.C.N. = 1047,343), the Yonо̄zu, Japan chondrite (E.C.N. = 1394,380), and the Glorieta Mountain, New Mexico siderite (E.C.N. = 1058,356).

The Lalande, New Mexico meteorite is composed of olivine and enstatite (var. hypersthene), with small percentages of enstatite-clinoenstatite intergrowths, secondary hematite, and dispersed metallic grains. Alteration to iron oxide has produced a strong stain over most of the component grains. The meteorite is classified as a hypersthene-olivine chondrite (Chy). …

It occupies part of western Santa Fe County and eastern Sandoval County. The area was named for White Rock Canyon which has been formed by the Rio Grande.
