A survey of earthworm population under different cropping systems was made under stubble mulch farming and where the residue was plowed under. The influence of earthworms on some of the important physical and biological properties of the soil was studied. Their role in the decomposition of crop residues was also determined.

Berberine, an alkaloid, has unique pharmacological properties as well as unusual chemical and physical characteristics. This compound has been used for many years as a remedy for eye diseases. In contrast to most alkaloids, berberine hydroxide is more soluble than its salts. Its chemical structure has been established, but a correlations of many of its properties and its structures has not been made.

A study of the electrolytic behavior of this group of compounds was undertaken to gain some knowledge of a little known type of reaction of these compounds. The study was made, not so much in view of developing new uses for these compounds, as to gain a better understanding of their behavior under various conditions. Another reason for this investigation is the fact that chemical reduction by the usual methods is inconvenient. With this fact in mind, the inherent convenience of electrolytic methods made the study of the electrolytic behavior of the nitroparrffins worthy of investigation.

The present report is a physiographic and paleontologic approach to the Pleistocene history of a portion of the Elkhorn River Valley in parts of Dodge, Cuming and Stanton counties in northeastern Nebraska. The area is important for correlation of deposits between the glacial and periglacial regions. Some of the critical stratigraphic units used for correlation in the Pleistocene of these regions are present in close association with the tills and contain fossils which make possible reliable statements on contemporaneity of deposits. The Czarina mine operated for a short time during the last Great War, lies in the southwestern corner of the Butte mining district of Montana. This area was worked during the extensive silver mining in Butte during the 1890's, and was prospected from time to time in later years. The orebody of the mine consists of fissure fillings of manganese mineral oxidized to a certain depth, in a fracture zone of the Boulder Batholith.

The Bonanza mine of the Emery mining district in Powell County is on the largest veins in the area, and is developed to a depth of 680 feet by an incline shaft following the dip of the structure. Although the majority of geologic structures in Montana have been tested in the search for petroleum, only a few have been found to contain commercial quantities of either oil or gas, and with each successive dry hole, producers are becoming more and more wary of investing capital in new wells located on structural features alone. It is apparent that if new oil and gas fields are to be found in Montana, exploration must be done on the basis of some­thing other than structure, or combined with structure.
