Aspects Of Parity Breaking In Classical And Quantum Fluids, Dylan J. Reynolds
Aspects Of Parity Breaking In Classical And Quantum Fluids, Dylan J. Reynolds
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Parity-breaking is ubiquitous across many scales of physics, from the rotation of galaxies at the largest of scales, to the cyclotron orbits of electrons at the microscopic scale. In describing the collective dynamics of many particle systems, parity breaking effects typically originate from some form of chirality, such as angular momentum, at the level of the constituent particles. External forces can also induce chiral motion, with the primary examples being the Lorentz and Coriolis forces.
The effects of parity breaking are perhaps most strikingly seen in active matter, systems of complex particles that tend to convert energy into some directed …

This paper is a philosophically oriented accompaniment to my audio project (accessible through the following link: https://cuny.manifoldapp.org/projects/me-and-mathematics). Working together, the paper and audio collages form a call to action and a resource. My primary finding is the importance of doing what you’re talking about or exploring and implementing your ideas experientially. Doing what you’re talking about is important for effective teaching/learning and feeling in line with oneself. This working concept came to my attention during my research conversation with my oldest living relative, and then, again, with my youngest (non-baby) relative. This doing what you’re talking about is a way …

Modeling Charging Current Dynamics At Microelectrodes And Their Interfaces With Electrolyte And Insulators With A Focus On Microfabricated Gold Microband Electrodes On An Su-8 Substrate, Miguel Angel Abrego Tello, Mahsa Lotfi Marchoubeh, Ingrid Fritsch
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
The suitability of electrochemical methods for quantitative measurements at microdevices is influenced by the relatively large electrode-insulator interface-to-electrode area ratio, greatly impacting charging dynamics due to interactions among electrolyte, conductor material, and insulator layers. The resulting charging current can overwhelm the faradaic current from redox chemistry. The device studied here features a 70 μm × 100 μm electroactive window, hosts gold coplanar microband electrodes, and is insulated by SU-8, which serves as both overlayer and substrate. The overlayer defines the electroactive length and isolates the leads of the electrodes from the sample solution. Cyclic voltammetry in 0.10 M …
Mechanistic, Biochemical, And Theoretical Studies Of Phototoxicity And Photobluing, Lloyd M. Lapoot
Mechanistic, Biochemical, And Theoretical Studies Of Phototoxicity And Photobluing, Lloyd M. Lapoot
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis consists of four chapters as detailed below:
Chapter 1 discusses the photoconversion of heptamethine to pentamethine cyanines and of pentamethine to trimethine cyanines. Here, we report mechanistic studies and initial experimental evidence for a previously unexplored 4-carbon truncation reaction that converts the simplest heptamethine cyanine to the corresponding trimethine cyanine. We propose a DFT-supported model describing a singlet oxygen (1O2) mediated formation of an allene hydroperoxide intermediate and subsequent 4-carbon loss through a retro-Diels-Alder process. Fluorescence and mass spectrometry measurements provide evidence for this direct conversion process. This 4-carbon truncation reaction adds to growing …

Controlled environment agriculture (CEA), or indoor agriculture, encompasses non-traditional farming methods that occur inside climate-controlled structures (e.g., greenhouses, warehouses, high tunnels) allowing for year-round production of fresh produce such as leaf lettuce. However, recent outbreaks and recalls associated with hydroponically grown lettuce contaminated with human pathogens have raised concerns. Few studies exist on the food safety risks during hydroponic cultivation of leaf lettuce; thus, it is important to identify contributing risk factors and potential mitigation strategies to prevent foodborne transmission via hydroponically grown produce. In this study, the concentration of infectious Tulane virus (TV), a human norovirus surrogate, in hydroponic …
Matrix Approximation And Image Compression, Isabella R. Padavana
Matrix Approximation And Image Compression, Isabella R. Padavana
Master's Theses
This thesis concerns the mathematics and application of various methods for approximating matrices, with a particular eye towards the role that such methods play in image compression. An image is stored as a matrix of values with each entry containing a value recording the intensity of a corresponding pixel, so image compression is essentially equivalent to matrix approximation. First, we look at the singular value decomposition, one of the central tools for analyzing a matrix. We show that, in a sense, the singular value decomposition is the best low-rank approximation of any matrix. However, the singular value decomposition has some …

The incentive to revive brownfield oil production extends the interest to apply polymer gel treatments in injection wells. Virtually, volumes of previous remediations implemented in similar reservoir types are used to size new jobs. Such an analogy-Based design procedure imposes a need to evaluate the most frequent designs for each reservoir type based on a comprehensive field survey. This survey provides a new treatment sizing strategy for polyacrylamide-polymer bulk gels by reviewing their field applications in 653 injection wells. the new strategy proposes using the average and most frequent gel volumes per reservoir type as an initial estimate of the …

Advances In The Integration Of Microalgal Communities For Biomonitoring Of Metal Pollution In Aquatic Ecosystems Of Sub-Saharan Africa, Mary Mulenga, Concillia Monde, Todd Johnson, Kennedy O Ouma, Stephen Syampungani
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
This review elucidated the recent advances in integrating microalgal communities in monitoring metal pollution in aquatic ecosystems of sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). It also highlighted the potential of incorporating microalgae as bioindicators in emerging technologies, identified research gaps, and suggested directions for further research in biomonitoring of metal pollution. Reputable online scholarly databases were used to identify research articles published between January 2000 and June 2023 for synthesis. Results indicated that microalgae were integrated either individually or combined with other bioindicators, mainly macroinvertebrates, macrophytes, and fish, alongside physicochemical monitoring. There was a significantly low level of integration (< 1%) of microalgae for biomonitoring aquatic metal pollution in SSA compared to other geographical regions. Microalgal communities were employed to assess compliance (76%), in diagnosis (38%), and as early-warning systems (38%) of aquatic ecological health status. About 14% of biomonitoring studies integrated microalgal eDNA, while other technologies, such as remote sensing, artificial intelligence, and biosensors, are yet to be significantly incorporated. Nevertheless, there is potential for the aforementioned emerging technologies for monitoring aquatic metal pollution in SSA. Future monitoring in the region should also consider the standardisation and synchronisation of integrative biomonitoring and embrace the "Citizen Science" concept at national and regional scales.

Impact Of Operational Ladar Occlusions On Point Cloud Instance Segmentation, Andrew D. Gibson
Impact Of Operational Ladar Occlusions On Point Cloud Instance Segmentation, Andrew D. Gibson
Theses and Dissertations
Data exploitation techniques are the enabler for technological advancements in military ISR applications of ladar ISR. By identifying instances of military objects in observed scenes, point cloud deep learning models can unlock new standards of real-time information delivery to warfighters. Although current deep learning training datasets do not include real-world collection occlusions consistent with military applications, this research characterizes SPT model performance by adding occlusions to the DALESObjects dataset via artificial flyby simulations. We find that a baseline model trained on unoccluded data suffers performance degradation on both semantic and instance segmentation tasks when evaluated on occluded data, but that the …
Collisional Broadening And Shift Of Rubidium 42D5/2 → N2F Line Shapes With Helium And Electrons, Dillon T. Nice
Collisional Broadening And Shift Of Rubidium 42D5/2 → N2F Line Shapes With Helium And Electrons, Dillon T. Nice
Theses and Dissertations
Line shapes for three rubidium 42D5/2 → n2F transitions were collected using pump probe spectroscopy. Broadening rates for Rb-He collisions ranged from 139–171 MHz/Torr and shift rates ranged from 113–146 MHz/Torr. Then, line shapes were collected at different alkali densities to measure electron density. Electron density had a clear “runaway ionization density threshold” around 1.5×1013 cm−3. The three transitions agreed within 2% on the observed fractional ionization when calculated using the observed Stark width but did not agree on the observed fractional ionization when calculated using the observed Stark shift. These results …

Accessible Real-Time Eye-Gaze Tracking For Neurocognitive Health Assessments, A Multimodal Web-Based Approach, Daniel C. Tisdale
Master's Theses
We introduce a novel integration of real-time, predictive eye-gaze tracking models into a multimodal dialogue system tailored for remote health assessments. This system is designed to be highly accessible requiring only a conventional webcam for video input along with minimal cursor interaction and utilizes engaging gaze-based tasks that can be performed directly in a web browser. We have crafted dynamic subsystems that capture high-quality data efficiently and maintain quality through instances of user attrition and incomplete calls. Additionally, these subsystems are designed with the foresight to allow for future re-analysis using improved predictive models, as well as enable the creation …

This report provides a detailed overview of the final design of our light-emitting diode (LED) focusing system. Our system incorporates a converging lens and a specially designed "glass funnel," which acts as a thick fiber optic that narrows the light to a fine point through internal reflection. The glass components of our system are precisely housed in a part made using advanced computer-numeric controlled (CNC) Mill and CNC Lathe manufacturing processes. This ensures high precision and durability of the overall system. Our LED focusing system is designed with a 60-watt stage light. The decision to use a glass funnel as …

On Coresets For Fair Clustering In Metric And Euclidean Spaces And Their Applications, Sayan Bandyapadhyay, Fedor V. Fomin, Kirill Simonov
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Fair clustering is a constrained clustering problem where we need to partition a set of colored points. The fraction of points of each color in every cluster should be more or less equal to the fraction of points of this color in the dataset. The problem was recently introduced by Chierichetti et al. (2017) [1]. We propose a new construction of coresets for fair clustering for Euclidean and general metrics based on random sampling. For the Euclidean space Rd, we provide the first coreset whose size does not depend exponentially on the dimension d. The question of whether such constructions …
Agricultural Groundcover Update May 2024, Justin Laycock
Agricultural Groundcover Update May 2024, Justin Laycock
Natural resources published reports
- In May, over 9% (1,410,000 ha) of the arable farmland in the south-west of Western Australia had less than 50% vegetative groundcover, which is inadequate to prevent wind erosion.
- Northern grainbelt had the highest risk of wind erosion and over 26% of this farmland had inadequate groundcover, predominantly found on landscapes known for sandy soils.
- About 1.3% (208,900 ha) of arable land had a high to very high risk of wind erosion because groundcover was less than 30%. Half of this land was in the West Midlands Ag Soil Zone.
On An Equivalence Of Divisors On M̄0,N From Gromov-Witten Theory And Conformal Blocks, Linda Chen
On An Equivalence Of Divisors On M̄0,N From Gromov-Witten Theory And Conformal Blocks, Linda Chen
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works
We consider a conjecture that identifies two types of base point free divisors on M̄0,n. The first arises from Gromov-Witten theory of a Grassmannian. The second comes from first Chern classes of vector bundles associated with simple Lie algebras in type A. Here we reduce this conjecture on M̄0,n to the same statement for n = 4. A reinterpretation leads to a proof of the conjecture on M̄0,n for a large class, and we give sufficient conditions for the non-vanishing of these divisors.

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This study investigates the effect of Nigeria’s population on four selected banking transaction channels. The Nigerian projected population (2022-2027) was used as an input variable for forecasting future volumes of transactions for each channel. The results show that the Support Vector Regression (SVR) model best fits the ATM, Online, and USSD channels of transaction while the Grey-box was better for POS. The forecast results show that ATM, online, and USSD channels had their highest volume of transactions in 2023, while for POS, the highest volume was recorded in 2027. Further results indicate that online and POS transactions would dominate payment …

Value Added Tax Rate Variation, Import Demand And Sectoral Output In Nigeria, Joshua K. Nomkuha, Aondoawase Asooso, Philip T. Abachi
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This study employs computable general equilibrium (CGE) model to estimate the effect of increase in value added tax (VAT), from 5 per cent to 7.5 per cent, on import demand and sectoral output in Nigeria. The study uses 2020 as the base year for the data analysis. The results show that increase in VAT affects import demand negatively, based on import penetration ratios, with mixed effect across six sectors. The implication of the result is that the VAT policy discourage consumption of foreign products, and constitute excess burden to consumers of such products in Nigeria. The results further reveal that …

Trade Liberalization, Non-Oil Export And Economic Growth In Nigeria, Jerome T. Andohol, Terhemen Tarzoor, Dennis T. Nomor
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
The study examines the impact of trade liberalization and non-oil exports on economic growth in Nigeria from 1986 to 2021. The study utilizes an autoregressive distributed lag model and found the combined effect of trade liberalization and non-oil exports to be positive and statistical significant. While trade liberalization alone may have negative consequences, its synergy with a robust non-oil export can drive sustainable economic growth. The study recommends that strategies to enhance non-oil exports should be encouraged to support the effectiveness of trade liberalization in promoting growth.

The Effectiveness Of Monetary Policy Transmission In Nigeria: Evidence From The Monetary Policy Rate And The Cash Reserve Ratio, Abdulrahman A. Nadani, Auwal Isah
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This paper investigates the effectiveness of the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) and Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) as policy instruments in Nigeria. A structural VAR model is employed to simulate two distinct models measuring shocks from the MPR and the CRR using monthly data from January 2006 to December 2023. Findings show that contractionary monetary policy impulses using MPR and the CRR contract output and credit to the private sector, inflation remains largely positive in the two models, known as the “price puzzle”, but the puzzle is more persistent in the MPR equation. Moreover, shock to MPR strongly influences short-term interest …

Stock Market Volatility In The United Kingdom: Simulating Post-Covid-19 Recovery, Bala A. Dahiru, Mohammed Shuaibu, Najibullah Hassanov
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This paper investigates the time it would take for the FTSE-100 index to reach its post-COVID-19 peak. The paper utilises an exponential generalised autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (EGARCH) model that accounts for leverage effect and asymmetries. The preferred models amongst competing variants was the Autoregressive Moving Average (ARMA)-EGARCH(2,1) specification and was used to predict daily FTSE-100 data from 5th January 2000 to 21st June 2024. The empirical exercise showed that the COVID-19-induced financial crisis negatively affected the United Kingdom’s stock market performance. The results show that the FTSE100 index could reach its post-pandemic peak around 27th August, 2024 (two months after …

Background Blood banks are an important part of healthcare systems. They embrace critical processes that start with donor recruitment and blood collection, followed by blood processing to produce different types of blood components used in transfusions, blood storage, blood distribution, and transfusion. Blood components must be generated at high quality, preserved safely, and transfused in a timely manner. This can be achieved by operating interrelated processes within a complex network. There is no comprehensive blueprint of Blood Banking and Transfusion (BB&T) processes and their relationships; therefore, this study aims to develop and evaluate a BB&T process architecture using the Riva …

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we use Paul-Painlev´e approach method, extended rational sine-cosine method and extended rational sinh-cosh method to construct the exact solution of the nonlinear Gilson-Pickering (GP) equation in plasma. The exact solution of GP equation obtained by the above three methods is new, and we use mathematical software to draw the two-dimensional and three-dimensional graphs of the new exact solutions. Through the study of nonlinear equations in plasma, this study will enrich the research and connotation of nonlinear development equations in plasma.

Strategic Integration Of Ai In Higher Education And Industry: The Ai8-Point Model, Emily Barnes, James Hutson
Faculty Scholarship
The AI8-Point Model, derived from extensive experience in technology, AI, and higher education administration, addresses the critical need for cost-effective, high-impact strategies tailored to higher education. Despite the transformative potential of AI in enhancing student engagement, optimizing processes, and improving educational outcomes, institutions often struggle with practical implementation. The AI8-Point Model fills this gap by offering strategies that balance cost and impact. Visualized as a circle divided into four quadrants, the model encompasses phases of student engagement and institutional interaction: pre-enrollment beyond institutional control, pre-enrollment within institutional control, post-enrollment within institutional control, and post-enrollment beyond institutional control. Each quadrant contains …

In a recent paper (Araya and Harada, 2023), Araya and Harada gave examples of self-dual near-extremal ternary codes of length 48 for 145 distinct values of the number A12 of codewords of minimum weight 12, and raised the question about the existence of codes for other values of A12. In this note, we use symmetric 2-(47,23,11) designs with an automorphism group of order 6 to construct self-dual near-extremal ternary codes of length 48 for 150 new values of A12.

Motivation: Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers are increasingly popular for population genomics and inferring ancestry for individuals of unknown origin. Because large SNP datasets are impractical for rapid and routine analysis, diagnostics rely on panels of highly informative markers. Strategies exist for selecting these markers, however, resources for efficiently evaluating their performance are limited for non-model systems.
Results: snpAIMeR is a user-friendly R package that evaluates the efficacy of genomic markers for the cluster assignment of unknown individuals. It is intended to help minimize panel size and genotyping effort by determining the informativeness of candidate diagnostic markers. Provided genotype data …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Cybersecurity has become a major concern in the modern world due to our heavy reliance on cyber systems. Advanced automated systems utilize many sensors for intelligent decision-making, and any malicious activity of these sensors could potentially lead to a system-wide collapse. To ensure safety and security, it is essential to have a reliable system that can automatically detect and prevent any malicious activity, and modern detection systems are created based on machine learning (ML) models. Most often, the dataset generated from the sensor node for detecting malicious activity is highly imbalanced because the Malicious class is significantly fewer than the …
