Following a sharp moose (Alces alces; mooz, Anishinaabemowin, Ojibwe language) population decline in northeastern Minnesota during the early 2000s, the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa initiated a long-term moose collaring effort to assess survival and mortality causes. Moose are a culturally important species to the Band, with annual subsistence hunts held on the Reservation and adjacent 1854 Ceded Territory. Continued research guides culturally appropriate management decisions aimed at bolstering calf and adult survival, helping to preserve this moose in Minnesota today and for subsequent generations. Existing video description evaluation metrics fail to capture the long-range chronology and semantic alignment essential for long-form descriptions. An effective evaluation metric for long-form descriptions must (i) assess global thematic alignment, (ii) measure local semantic alignment, and (iii) evaluate chronological alignment while detecting corrupted content. We introduce Video Comprehension Score (VCS), a reference-based metric, which directly addresses these evaluation requirements through three components: Global Alignment Score for thematic alignment, Local Alignment Score for local semantic alignment, and Narrative Alignment Score for chronological alignment with adjustable tolerance. Dynamic soil properties (DSP) are a great tool for monitoring land-use change, and they are frequently used as soil health metrics. The NRCS and other soil researchers often use repeating, single-point or nested-point DSP studies to monitor and better understand the effects of land management decisions. While these studies capture the temporal variability of DSPs, they overlook the field-scale spatial variability of DSPs. Plant-soil feedbacks (PSFs) describe how plants change their soil environment in ways that can either negatively or positively affect subsequent plant growth. In doing so, they offer an opportunity to connect ecological processes with agricultural practice. My dissertation examines PSFs created by native perennial monocultures, commonly used for native seed production, across time and space, and through soil legacies. Specifically, I focus on how plant species identity shapes both soil nutrient and soil microbial community responses. Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) is a condition that describes the spectrum of disease and liver injury attributed to the consumption of alcohol. ALD diagnosis is heavily dependent on alcohol use, making it challenging to test for, as alcohol use is often self-reported, and early-stage ALD can present asymptomatically. This study aims to explore how social determinants of health associated with alcohol use behaviors predict ALD-related liver stress risk. Without a thorough geological and hydrogeological understanding, urban development can be risky and prone to numerous challenges. In this study, we aim to conduct engineering geological and groundwater mapping of Brunei utilizing data from 614 sacrificial investigative boreholes drilled over the course of 40 years for geotechnical investigation and housing development. This study introduces a novel approach for early dyslexia detection in children through automated handwriting analysis, integrating a hybrid CNN-BiLSTM-CTC architecture with personalized learning strategies. Our method combines a custom CNN-BiLSTM-CTC model with tailored educational interventions to support dyslexic learners. We analyzed children's handwritten text images in English, collected from specially designed tests involving word rewriting, sentence reconstruction, and paragraph composition, particularly challenging tasks for dyslexic individuals. Notably, our CNN-BiLSTM-CTC model achieved the best result with an accuracy of 97.67%, outperforming other architectures. Compared to pre-trained models like EfficientNetB7, DenseNet121, and MobileNetV2, our custom CNN-BiLSTM-CTC model demonstrated superior performance. Key …

The phenomenon of sea level rise (SLR) is a global issue affecting coastal areas. This study analyzes SLR and land deformation in the subduction zone of the Tanimbar Islands, specifically the coastal regions of Adaut on Selaru Island and Saumlaki on Yamdena Island. Statistical methods and the CEEMDAN algorithm were used to process data on tides, Sea Level Anomaly (SLA), Sea Surface Temperature (SST), and the influence of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) over 30 years (1993–2022). In this study, below-knee prosthetic sockets reinforced with glass-fiber composites were investigated experimentally and numerically. In compliance with the ASTM guidelines, two lay-up configurations were constructed and tested for tensile and fatigue strengths. During the gait trials, the F-socket system was used to measure the interface pressure distribution. Stress, deformation, and safety factor responses under physiological loading conditions were simulated using complementary finite element analysis (FEA). Hospitals are expected to maintain operations during and after earthquakes, yet many facilities in the Philippines remain structurally and non-structurally vulnerable. This study evaluates the seismic vulnerability of selected public hospitals in Maguindanao Province, located near the Cotabato Trench and the Western Mindanao Fault, using the FEMA P-154 (3rd ed.) Rapid Visual Screening (RVS) Level-1 procedure. The Water Quality Index (WQI) is an essential metric for evaluating the usability of surface water resources, particularly in ecologically sensitive and high-demand areas like the Panch Prayag belt of Uttarakhand, India. This region, comprising five major pilgrimage towns—Devaprayag, Nandprayag, Vishnuprayag, Karnaprayag, and Rudraprayag—faces seasonal fluctuations in water quality due to both natural and anthropogenic pressures. In this study, water samples were collected from 2021 to 2023 across pre-monsoon, monsoon, and post-monsoon seasons, and the WQI was computed using the Canadian Water Quality Index (CWQI 1.0). Identifying influential predictor variables is crucial for enhancing model interpretability in supervised classification. This study applies Permutation Variable Importance (PVI), a model-agnostic approach, to evaluate variable relevance after model fitting. Using data from the 2024 Indonesia Dairy Cow Productivity Survey, this research investigates five classification techniques: (1) Support Vector Machine (SVM), (2) Neural Network (NN), (3) k-Nearest Neighbors (kNN), (4) Naïve Bayes Classifier (NB), and (5) Logistic Regression (LR), to identify which method(s) yield the best performance based on evaluation metrics such as accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. This study aims to address the communication hallenges faced by the Indonesian deaf community by developing an automatic classification model for Sistem Bahasa Isyarat Indonesia (SIBI) using data mining techniques. The main objective is to identify a practical algorithm for recognizing SIBI hand gestures to enhance accessibility and inclusiveness in digital communication. A comprehensive dataset consisting of 32,850 gesture samples representing SIBI alphabet signs was collected and processed through feature extraction, data cleaning, and normalization using Z-Transform and Min-Max methods. The El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a major climate phenomenon that significantly influences global weather patterns, particularly rainfall and temperature variability across different regions. Accurate ENSO forecasting is therefore essential to support disaster risk mitigation and strategic decision-making in climate-sensitive sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, and water resource management. This study investigates the performance of deep learning approaches for ENSO prediction using a non-sequential sampling procedure on historical climate data. Three models are comparatively evaluated: Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and a hybrid CNN–LSTM architecture.
