Purpose. Design and synthesize novel compounds to treat Staphylococcus aureus infections by targeting the dysregulation of the Casein Protease P, ClpP. Methods. Utilize established chemical methods to synthesize ureadepsipeptides, small-molecule ClpP activators, and ureadepsipeptide hybrids. Assess their effectiveness by using minimum inhibitory concentration assays and in vitro biochemical assays for ClpP activation. Explore their potential as antibiotics through mitochondrial toxicity tests, glucose/galactose assays, and biophysical measurements related to metabolism and clearance, including thermal shift and surface plasmon resonance assays. Unexploded ordnance (UXO) impact on countries is not well-documented, since post-war surveys or data collection are often hindered by a lack of appropriate funding and reparation. In Laos, UXO has hardly been cleared since 1964 and thus leaves room for spatially and temporally analyzing the severity of environmental and economic degradation in the area. This study uses the framework of ecosystem services, particularly carbon stock, as a way to provide quantitative metrics of impact to local governments and stakeholders. Mathematics has clear benefits in education, from preparing students for future careers to teaching them how to problem-solve. While mathematics achievement has been falling in recent decades, students claim that the problem is not the mathematics itself, but the ‘boring’ classroom material that feels removed from real life. This thesis investigates the propulsion requirements for a crewed mission to Mars, focusing on how mission architecture, particularly the choice between opposition- and conjunction-class trajectories, influences the selection between nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) and nuclear electric propulsion (NEP). By applying the Tsiolkovsky rocket equation, the Delta-V (∆V) needed for efficient interplanetary transfers is shown to exceed the performance limits of chemical propulsion, motivating the need for nuclear alternatives. An engineering comparison of NTP and NEP systems evaluates key parameters including specific impulse, thrust, propellant mass fraction, system mass, and power-to-mass ratios. NTP provides high thrust but moderate efficiency, making it …

Traditional beta estimates are constructed from historical stock‑and‑market returns and therefore adjust only as fast as realized data accrue. This thesis investigates whether the forward‑looking information embedded in equity‑option prices can enhance beta forecasts. Using near‑end‑of‑day quotes for 236 S&P 500 firms between 2007 and 2024, I extract risk‑neutral variance and skewness, construct five alternative beta estimators (historical, option‑implied, and three hybrids), and evaluate them against realized betas over six‑, twelve‑, and twenty‑four‑month windows. Rolling‑OLS beta remains the most accurate benchmark at short horizons, yet option‑implied moments add economically and statistically significant value when systematic exposure is expected to change …

Proxies related to the climate have been used as a method to observe long-term changes occurring underwater that span long before we had the capability to measure environmental characteristics. Porites corals have been used as sea surface temperature (SST) proxies due to annual cyclicity in their growth process and mineral composition. As the climate differs globally, it is important to ensure that proxies are accurate regardless of location to measure changes in climate. Urbanization reshapes dissolved organic matter (DOM) sources, transport, and transformations through changes in vegetation, hydrology, and management of waste and water. Yet the impacts of urbanization on DOM are variable within and among cities. Predicting heterogeneous responses to urbanization is challenged by diverse human activities and underlying biophysical variation along stream networks. Using data from the 486 largest urban areas in the continental United States and seven focal cities, we identified macro and local scale urban gradients in social, built, and biophysical factors that are expected to shape DOM. As dam removals increase in frequency across the U.S., most research has focused on the impact of larger dam removals, despite the removal of small dams being much more common. Given the hundreds of small dams in Montana, this research uses citizen science data collected over eight years spanning before and after a 2020 small dam removal in Rattlesnake Creek, Montana, to investigate impact on stream ecology and morphology. Neutrosophic Sets are conceptual frameworks designed to address uncertainty. A Neutrosophic TwoFold Algebra is a hybrid algebraic structure defined over a neutrosophic set, combining classical algebraic operations with neutrosophic components. Concepts such as Hyperalgebra and Superhyperalgebra extend classical Algebra using Power Sets and 𝑛-th powersets. Additionally, structures such as NeutroAlgebra and AntiAlgebra have been defined in recent y ears. The elastic scattering of spinless vortex electrons on realistic target atoms has been investigated. In particular, expressions are derived in different approximations for the angular distribution of elastically scattered electrons. We develop a distorted wave formalism that includes the effect of the atomic potential on the impinging vortex electron and compare this to a plane-wave Born approximation (PWBA) without such a distortion. Detailed computations have been performed for elastic scattering of vortex electrons on helium, neon, and argon targets by varying the energy, topological charge, and opening angle. Direct dynamics simulations are employed in many areas of chemistry and biochemistry. When paired with an appropriate underlying ab initio, semiempirical, or DFT-based potential energy surface and proper sampling of initial conditions, direct dynamics simulations provide an atomic-level view of the reaction dynamics within the system of interest, yielding considerable fundamental insights. Moreover, when a sufficient number of simulations are conducted, they provide a wealth of information regarding the overall trends in reactivity. The compound 1,4,7-trithia-10,13-diazacyclopentadecane-9,14-dione, 1, crystallizes in the space group P21/c with a = 9.3608(3) Å, b = 16.0333(5) Å, c = 9.5608(3) Å, β = 113.3521(14)°, and Z = 4. The title molecule forms chains via face-to-face N–H…O hydrogen bonds. The structure of 1 is also compared to the previously reported oxygen analog, 1,4,7-trioxa-10,13-diazacyclopentadecane-9,14-dione.

The effectiveness of surface-immobilized antibodies is often diminished by improper antibody orientation and limited stability, impeding the analytical performance of biosensors. Here, we report a novel enzyme-mediated strategy to biotinylate the Fc region of an anti-horseradish peroxidase (anti-HRP) antibody with site-specificity that enables oriented immobilization on a streptavidin-functionalized surface. Microbial transglutaminase (mTG) catalyzes the covalent coupling between the amine functional group on a biotin analogue (NH2-PEG4-biotin) and the side chain of a privileged glutamine residue (Q295) located on the heavy chain Fc region of IgG antibodies. Phenaliporphyrin, a new aromatic benziporphyrin derivative, has been synthesized from an annulated cyclopropane dialdehyde intermediate. Corey-Chaykovsky cyclopropanation of dimethyl acenaphthylene-1,2-dicarboxylate gave a cyclopropane diester, and this was converted to the corresponding bis-Weinreb amide. Reduction with lithium aluminum hydride afforded an unstable dialdehyde and subsequent acid-catalyzed condensation with a tripyrrane dicarboxylic acid, followed by oxidation with aqueous ferric chloride, gave the targeted porphyrinoid system. This involves ring expansion of the acenaphthylene precursor to generate the phenalene unit. Phenaliporphyrin exhibits a porphyrin-like UV–vis spectrum with a Soret band at 443 nm and a relatively intense Q-band at 601 nm. The proton NMR …

Unsubstituted carbatripyrrins have previously been shown to be useful intermediates in the synthesis of benzocarbaporphyrins and related core-modified analogues. However, the absence of substituents often resulted in the formation of poorly soluble products. In this study, four examples alkyl substituted carbatripyrrins were constructed by base-catalyzed condensation of dihydrofulvenes with pyrrole aldehydes. Further reaction with a pyrrole dialdehyde in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid afforded a series of carbaporphyrins, while reactions with 2,5-furandicarboxaldehyde generated oxacarbaporphyrins. These results demonstrate that alkyl substituted carbatripyrrins are promising precursors to new carbaporphyrinoid structures.

This work reports the development and evaluation of dendrimer-based nanogels based on Poly amidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer generation 5, engineered to act as a carrier with reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavenging capabilities. We developed a cross-linking reaction-enabled flash nanoprecipitation method in which the cross-linking reaction occurs during the flash nanoprecipitation process to form a cross-linked nanostructure. Using this approach, an N-hydroxy succinimide (NHS)-functionalized ROS-responsive thioketal cross-linker (TK-NHS) was synthesized and utilized to cross-link DAB-core PAMAM dendrimer G5, resulting in the formation of G5-TK nanogels. Exposure to organophosphate-based nerve agents and pesticides poses health and security threats to civilians, soldiers, and first responders. Thus, there is a need to develop effective decontamination agents that are nonhazardous to human health. To address this, we demonstrate that instantaneous hydrolysis of methyl paraoxon (Me-POX), a nerve agent simulant, can be achieved in the presence of aminoguanidine imines at pH 10: ● the pyridine-4-aldehyde aminoguanidine-imine (1) and ● the 2,3-butanedione aminoguanidine-imine (2). The hydrolysis of Me-POX under these conditions is substantially faster than that of the state-of-the-art decontaminating agent, Dekon-139 (2,3-butanedione oxime, potassium salt). Bone tissue engineering (BTE) aims to repair bone defects using biocompatible materials with tailored geometries and pore structures, providing appropriate mechanical support and control over biodegradation kinetics to promote bone growth. In this study, we utilized digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing to fabricate scaffolds with varying pore sizes using polymer–ceramic slurries composed of polylactic acid (PLA) as the main polymer matrix, incorporated with hydroxyapatite (HA) and bioactive borate glass (BBG) at various ratios. A kinetic framework is introduced for a pseudocapacitive potentiometric biosensor. Mathematical derivation and kinetic modeling demonstrate that experimentally observed linearity in analyte-OCP response arises from a dynamic equilibrium between competing redox reactions on a single electrode. This system can be expanded to develop a new generation of biosensors.

Advancing energy harvesting is crucial for the development of wearable and implantable technologies. Given the high concentration of complex fuels, such as glucose, in biological fluids, biofuel cells present a promising avenue for exploration. However, glucose fuel cells that have been published to date typically catalyze only one or two of the maximum 12 oxidation steps for glucose, resulting in low energy density. Mechanisms governing MAX-phase etching set the properties and stability of resulting MXenes, yet the details of this complex process remain poorly understood. Combining thermodynamic analysis of surface chemistries with ab initio molecular dynamics and enhanced free-energy sampling, we directly model elementary steps at the MAX/etching solution interface. We find that purely thermodynamic analysis overestimates etching selectivity, which is governed by the kinetics of elementary reaction steps. Our calculations reveal that initial exposure to water drives localized, thermodynamically favored edge oxidation that seeds MXene-like terminations into the uppermost layers of Ti3AlC2 with oxygen occupying the interlayer space between …

We characterize the permutations of Fq whose graph minimizes the number of collinear triples and describe the lexicographically-least one, confirming a conjecture of Cooper-Solymosi. This question is connected to Dudeney’s No-3-in-a-Line problem, the Heilbronn triangle problem, and the structure of finite plane Kakeya sets. We discuss a connection with complete sets of mutually orthogonal latin squares and state a few open problems primarily about general finite affine planes.

The S-trifluoromethylation of thiols is accomplished using a simple and cost-effective organic catalyst (diacetyl) along with a bench-stable and environmentally friendly trifluoro methylating reagent (Langloi's reagent). Under optimized conditions (2.5 equivalents of Langlois reagent, Blue LED irradiation, 48-h reaction time at room temperature), the reaction yielded up to 81% S-trifluoro methylated product. This method's high yields, compatibility with a broad substrate scope (aliphatic, heteroaromatic, and aromatic thiols), and environmentally friendly conditions demonstrate its potential for broader synthetic applications. This study explores how shopping contexts (hedonic vs. utilitarian) influence consumer preferences for AI- vs. human-designed fashion products. In Study 1, participants with hedonic motivations preferred human-designed items, while those with utilitarian motivations preferred AI-designed products, supporting the hypothesis that shopping context affects designer preferences. Study 2 further investigates the mediation of competence-warmth traits in designer preferences and the moderation of anthropocentric bias. It finds that hedonic shopping contexts increase the desire for warmth-related traits, leading to a preference for human designers, while utilitarian contexts favor competence-related traits and AI designs. Procedural terrain generation, the algorithmic creation of digital terrain, finds use in multiple types of digital media. As the capabilities of modern computation increase, the ability to create more and more realistic terrains fully procedurally at scale improves. Modern methods of procedural generation have also overlapped with these advances, most notably advances in hardware. To account for this, a survey was done of modern methods for procedural terrain generation. Smooth procedural noise functions are one of the backbones of procedural terrain generation. This thesis presents a force-based mathematical model for simulating dynamic falls in lead sport climbing, with an emphasis on physical realism and empirical validation. The system is modeled as a mass–spring–damper, incorporating gravity, nonlinear rope stiffness, internal damping, and Capstan-style friction at protection points. The goal is to predict peak forces and rope elongation while capturing the complex dynamics of real climbing ropes. Several novel features are introduced. Activation switches ensure forces only engage when the rope is tensioned, preventing premature response.
