Quantifying Chaos In Dynamical Systems With Lyapunov Exponents, Michael Van Opstall Jun 2016

Quantifying Chaos In Dynamical Systems With Lyapunov Exponents, Michael Van Opstall

Furman University Electronic Journal of Undergraduate Mathematics

In this paper we analyze the dynamics of a four dimensional mechanical system which exhibits sensitive dependence on initial conditions. The aim of the paper is to introduce the basic ideas of chaos theory while assuming only a course in ordinary differential equations as a prerequisite.

Divisability Tests, Apoorva Khare Jun 2016

Divisability Tests, Apoorva Khare

Furman University Electronic Journal of Undergraduate Mathematics

In this paper, we give a new method to test the divisibility of any positive integer by another. First, we outline the usual test, in which one proceeds from right to left, i.e. the direction opposite the one taken while carrying out long division. After pointing out some of the problems with this method, we give another method, which forms the core of this paper. This latter method works along the same lines as the earlier one, but here one proceeds from left to right. Examples of some well known divisibility tests for special divisors are given along with some …

Maximum Matchings In Complete Multipartite Graphs, David Sitton Jun 2016

Maximum Matchings In Complete Multipartite Graphs, David Sitton

Furman University Electronic Journal of Undergraduate Mathematics

How many edges can there be in a maximum matching in a complete multipartite graph? Several cases where the answer is known are discussed, and then a new formula is given which answers this question.

Compactifications Of Topological Spaces, Jay Blankespoor, John Krueger Jun 2016

Compactifications Of Topological Spaces, Jay Blankespoor, John Krueger

Furman University Electronic Journal of Undergraduate Mathematics

Given a locally compact, Hausdorff space, χ, there are several ways to compactify it. We examine two of these compactifications – the one-point compactification, X̌, and the Stone-Čech compactification, β(χ) – and give conditions which guarantee that X̌ ≠ β(χ). We also give new examples of topological spaces for which X̌ = β(χ).

Conjugacy Classes Of Triple Products In Finite Groups, Emily Salvo, Kevin Hutson Jun 2016

Conjugacy Classes Of Triple Products In Finite Groups, Emily Salvo, Kevin Hutson

Furman University Electronic Journal of Undergraduate Mathematics

Let G be a finite group and let T1 be the number of times a triple (x, y, z) ∈ G3 binds X, where X = {xyz, xzy, yxz, yzx, zxy, zyx}, to one conjugacy class. Let T2 denote the number of times a triple G3 breaks X into two conjugacy classes. We have established the following results: i) the probability that a triple (x, y, z) ∈ D3n binds X to one contingency class is ≥ 5/8. ii) for groups such …

The N-Extent Of S3(P,M), Paul Jung, Tucker Mcelroy, Jason Samuels Jun 2016

The N-Extent Of S3(P,M), Paul Jung, Tucker Mcelroy, Jason Samuels

Furman University Electronic Journal of Undergraduate Mathematics

In this paper we estimate xtn (S3 (p, m)), the n-extent of various lens spaces. We give numerical evidence for extending certain results of D. G. Yang [Duke Math. J., 74 (1994), 531-545.] to primes p between 11 and 37. We explain the implication of our results for the topology of 4-dimensional manifolds of positive sectional curvature with nontrivial isometric Zp-actions.

Structure And Geochronology Of The White Fork Pluton, Southern Sierra Nevada, Ian Richard Mahaffey Jun 2016

Structure And Geochronology Of The White Fork Pluton, Southern Sierra Nevada, Ian Richard Mahaffey

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

The Sierra Nevada batholith represents an archetypal continental arc, although the style of deformation throughout the history of the arc is only poorly understood, in part due to the voluminous nature of Late Cretaceous magmatism that has overprinted earlier structures. The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of pre-Late Cretaceous deformation in the Sierra Nevada batholith through a structural and geochronological study of the Jurassic White Fork pluton. A Jurassic age for the White Fork pluton is indicated by its inclusion of numerous 148 Ma Independence dikes, and geochronology on the White Fork pluton is limited …

An Example Of Persistent Microstructure In A Long Rain Event, A. R. Jameson, M. L. Larsen, A. B. Kostinski Jun 2016

An Example Of Persistent Microstructure In A Long Rain Event, A. R. Jameson, M. L. Larsen, A. B. Kostinski

Department of Physics Publications

A 2D video disdrometer (2DVD) probe was used to gather detailed drop measurements over a 770-min rain event. Accumulated totals of the rainfall and of the number of drops for each square centimeter showed persistent, significant correlated structures across the approximately 11 cm × 11 cm grid of the 2DVD. This is surprising because larger-scale studies suggest that the values in each square centimeter should be highly correlated with very little variation. Nevertheless, this correlation remains strikingly similar to what is observed at a coarser resolution, suggesting that it somehow scales with spatial resolution. However, because the correlation functions are …

Analysis Of A Parallel Machine Scheduling Problem With Sequence Dependent Setup Times And Job Availability Intervals, Ridvan Gedik, Chase Rainwater, Heather Nachtmann, Edward A. Pohl

Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications

In this study, we propose constraint programming (CP) model and logic-based Benders algorithms in order to make the best decisions for scheduling non-identical jobs with availability intervals and sequence dependent setup times on unrelated parallel machines in a fixed planning horizon. In this problem, each job has a profit, cost and must be assigned to at most one machine in such a way that total profit is maximized. In addition, the total cost has to be less than or equal to a budget level. Computational tests are performed on a real-life case study prepared in collaboration with the U.S. Army …

Development And Implementation Of Problem-Based Chemistry Experiments For Engineering Students In A Multi-Disciplinary Course, Tiffany Hesser, Stephanie R. Bunyea

Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper will describe the implementation and continuing development of five problem based laboratory experiments in a general chemistry course designed specifically for multiple disciplines of engineering students at the University of New Haven. The Problem Based Laboratory Experiments (PBLE) were developed to provide students with the opportunity to perform and develop experimental procedures working in interdisciplinary teams, while achieving a greater understanding of the role of chemistry in engineering fields. In each PBLE, students first complete a traditional chemistry experiment to gain an understanding of the chemical concepts and to become familiar with executing a written procedure with a …

Croplands are highly productive ecosystems that contribute to land–atmosphere exchange of carbon, energy, and water during their short growing seasons. We evaluated and compared net ecosystem exchange (NEE), latent heat flux (LE), and sensible heat flux (H) simulated by a suite of ecosystem models at five agricultural eddy covariance flux tower sites in the central United States as part of the North American Carbon Program Site Synthesis project. Most of the models overestimated H and underestimated LE during the growing season, leading to overall higher Bowen ratios compared to the observations. Most models systematically under predicted NEE, especially at rain-fed …

Habitat Selection Of Wild Turkeys In Burned Longleaf Pine Savannas, Andrew R. Little, Michael J. Chamberlain, L. Mike Conner, Robert J. Warren Jun 2016

Habitat Selection Of Wild Turkeys In Burned Longleaf Pine Savannas, Andrew R. Little, Michael J. Chamberlain, L. Mike Conner, Robert J. Warren

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Frequent prescribed fire (≤3 yr) and selective harvest of off-site hardwoods are the primary restoration and management tools for pine (Pinus spp.) savannas in the southeastern United States. However, a knowledge gap exists in our understanding of eastern wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) habitat selection in longleaf pine savannas and research is warranted to direct our future management decisions. Therefore, we investigated habitat selection of female turkeys in 2 longleaf pine savanna systems managed by frequent fire in southwestern Georgia during 2011–2013. We observed differential habitat selection across 2 scales (study area and seasonal area of use) …

How Resilient Modulus Of A Pavement Depends On Moisture Level: Towards A Theoretical Justification Of A Practically Important Empirical Formula, Pedro Barragan Olague, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Jun 2016

How Resilient Modulus Of A Pavement Depends On Moisture Level: Towards A Theoretical Justification Of A Practically Important Empirical Formula, Pedro Barragan Olague, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Resilient modulus is a mechanical characteristic describing the stiffness of a pavement. Its value depends on the moisture level. In pavement construction, it is important to be able, knowing the resilient modulus corresponding to one moisture level, to predict resilient modulus corresponding to other moisture levels. There exists an empirical formula for this prediction. In this paper, we provide a possible theoretical explanation for this empirical formula.

Why Compaction Meter Value (Cmv) Is A Good Measure Of Pavement Stiffness: Towards A Possible Theoretical Explanation, Andrzej Pownuk, Pedro Barragan Olague, Vladik Kreinovich Jun 2016

Why Compaction Meter Value (Cmv) Is A Good Measure Of Pavement Stiffness: Towards A Possible Theoretical Explanation, Andrzej Pownuk, Pedro Barragan Olague, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

To measure stiffness of the compacted pavement, practitioners use the Compaction Meter Value (CMV); a ratio between the amplitude for the first harmonic of the compactor's acceleration and the amplitude corresponding to the vibration frequency. Numerous experiments show that CMV is highly correlated with the pavement stiffness, but as of now, there is no convincing theoretical explanation for this correlation. In this paper, we provide a possible theoretical explanation for the empirical correlation. This explanation also explains why, the stiffer the material, the more higher-order harmonics we observe.

Solar Cycle Variability In Mean Thermospheric Composition And Temperature Induced By Atmospheric Tides, M. Jones Jr., J. M. Forbes, M. E. Hagan Jun 2016

Solar Cycle Variability In Mean Thermospheric Composition And Temperature Induced By Atmospheric Tides, M. Jones Jr., J. M. Forbes, M. E. Hagan

All Physics Faculty Publications

In this paper we demonstrate that dissipation of upward propagating tides produces significant changes in the mean temperature of the thermosphere, ranging from +19æK at solar minimum to _15æK at solar maximum in the equatorial region. Our methodology consists of measuring the differential response of the thermosphere-ionosphere-electrodynamics general circulation model (TIE-GCM) under solar minimum and solar maximum conditions to constant tidal forcing at its 97ækm lower boundary, as specified by the observationally based Climatological Tidal Model of the Thermosphere. Diagnosis of the model reveals that these changes are mainly driven by 5.3æ_m nitric oxide (NO) cooling, which more efficiently cools …

Cancer cells often require glutamine for growth, thereby distinguishing them from most normal cells. Here we show that PIK3CA mutations reprogram glutamine metabolism by upregulating glutamate pyruvate transaminase 2 (GPT2) in colorectal cancer (CRC) cells, making them more dependent on glutamine. Compared with isogenic wild-type (WT) cells, PIK3CA mutant CRCs convert substantially more glutamine to alpha-ketoglutarate to replenish the tricarboxylic acid cycle and generate ATP. Mutant p110 alpha upregulates GPT2 gene expression through an AKT-independent, PDK1-RSK2-ATF4 signalling axis. Moreover, aminooxyacetate, which inhibits the enzymatic activity of aminotransferases including GPT2, suppresses xenograft tumour growth of CRCs with PIK3CA mutations, but not …

Quartz Crystal Preferred Orientation And Recrystallization Patterns From Naturally Deformed Rocks Under Constriction, Riley Quine Jun 2016

Quartz Crystal Preferred Orientation And Recrystallization Patterns From Naturally Deformed Rocks Under Constriction, Riley Quine

Materials Engineering

This study analyzes crystal preferred orientation (CPO) patterns within constrictional quartz-rich gneisses. Quartz deformation and CPO patterns are an area of interest because quartz is one of the most prevalent minerals in earth's crust. Understanding the typical way that quartz crystals reorient under different states of strain can provide geologists with an additional tool for understanding paleo-strain. Temperature and strain geometry are two dominant factors that control the orientation of quartz crystals within a rock. Temperature determines which slip planes are active and slip planes typically reorient so that they are perpendicular to maximum stress. Previous workers have suggested that …

Identification Of A Disulfide Bridge In Sodium-Coupled Neutral Amino Acid Transporter 2(Snat2) By Chemical Modification, Chen Chen, Jiahong Wang, Ruiping Cai, Yanmen M. Yuan, Zhanyun Y. Guo, Christof Grewer, Zhou Zhang Jun 2016

Identification Of A Disulfide Bridge In Sodium-Coupled Neutral Amino Acid Transporter 2(Snat2) By Chemical Modification, Chen Chen, Jiahong Wang, Ruiping Cai, Yanmen M. Yuan, Zhanyun Y. Guo, Christof Grewer, Zhou Zhang

Chemistry Faculty Scholarship

Sodium-coupled neutral amino acid transporter 2 (SNAT2) belongs to solute carrier 38 (SLC38) family of transporters, which is ubiquitously expressed in mammalian tissues and mediates transport of small, neutral amino acids, exemplified by alanine(Ala, A). Yet structural data on SNAT2, including the relevance of intrinsic cysteine residues on structure and function, is scarce, in spite of its essential roles in many tissues. To better define the potential of intrinsic cysteines to form disulfide bonds in SNAT2, mutagenesis experiments and thiol-specific chemical modifications by N-ethylmaleimide (NEM) and methoxy-polyethylene glycol maleimide (mPEG-Mal, MW 5000) were performed, with or without the reducing regent …

Controlling Activity And Selectivity Using Water In The Au-Catalysed Preferential Oxidation Of Co In H2, Johnny Saavedra, Todd N. Whittaker, Z. Chen, Christopher J. Pursell, R. M. Rioux, Bert D. Chandler

Chemistry Faculty Research

Industrial hydrogen production through methane steam reforming exceeds 50 million tons annually and accounts for 2–5% of global energy consumption. The hydrogen product, even after processing by the water–gas shift, still typically contains ∼1% CO, which must be removed for many applications. Methanation (CO + 3H2 → CH4 + H2O) is an effective solution to this problem, but consumes 5–15% of the generated hydrogen. The preferential oxidation (PROX) of CO with O2 in hydrogen represents a more-efficient solution. Supported gold nanoparticles, with their high CO-oxidation activity and notoriously low hydrogenation activity, have long been examined …

Fuzzy-Inspired Hierarchical Version Of The Von~Neumann-Morgenstern Solutions As A Natural Way To Resolve Collaboration-Related Conflicts, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Martha Osegueda Escobar

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In situations when several participants collaborate with each other, it is desirable to come up with a fair way to divide the resulting gain between the participants. Such a fair way was proposed by John von Neumann and Oscar Morgenstern, fathers of the modern game theory. However, in some situations, the von Neumann-Morgenstern solution does not exist. To cover such situations, we propose to use a fuzzy-inspired hierarchical version of the von Neumann-Morgenstern (NM) solution. We prove that, in contrast to the original NM solution, the hierarchical version always exists.

Similarity Beyond Correlation: Symmetry-Based Approach, Ildar Batyrshin, Thongchai Dumrongpokaphan, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

When practitioners analyze the similarity between time series, they often use correlation to gauge this similarity. Sometimes this works, but sometimes, this leads to counter-intuitive results. In this paper, we use natural symmetries -- scaling and shift -- to explain this discrepancy between correlation and common sense, and then use the same symmetries to come up with more adequate measures of similarity.

Security And Privacy Analysis Of Medical Wearables, Brian M. Chalif Jun 2016

Security And Privacy Analysis Of Medical Wearables, Brian M. Chalif

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

The release of Google glass and the Apple and Samsung smart watches in the past two years pushed wearables to the forefront of technology. The realm of medical wearables will specifically see a huge growth as wearables become more common place. There are documented cases of security and privacy breaches in the five main potential breaching areas: wearable device itself, Bluetooth communication, smartphone or personal computer app, Wi-Fi data exchange, cloud storage. Privacy policies for individual wearables are not always in the best interest of the individual and government regulations on wearables security does not always fully vet wearables. Interviews …
