A Novel Nano-Energetic System Based On Bismuth Hydroxide, Mkhitar A. Hobosyan, Srbuhi A. Yolchinyan, Karen S. Martirosyan

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We report the first study of gas generation and thermal wave behavior during the performance of a novel nano-energetic system based on aluminum and bismuth hydroxide Al–Bi(OH)3. Thermodynamic calculations demonstrate that this system is comparable to one of the most powerful known nanothermite systems, Al–Bi2O3, in terms of energy capacity per initial charge mass, and may generate more than twice the gaseous products: 0.0087 mol g1 . Differential scanning calorimetry analysis shows that homogenization of the as-received powder using mechanical activation is an essential step to reduce the decomposition energy of bismuth hydroxide by 30%. This results in nano-thermite with …

Getting Students Excited About Science With High Altitude Ballooning, Charles F. Niederriter, Steven H. Mellema

2017 Academic High Altitude Conference

Many of us dream of exploring space, but there are not many ways to do so. Although it is difficult to get into deep space, near space is within our grasp. High altitude balloons are released into the stratosphere, generally reaching between 60,000 to 120,000 feet before they burst and their payload is returned to earth by parachute. Modern balloon systems generally contain electronic equipment such as radio transmitters, cameras, and GPS receivers, as well as a variety of scientific instruments. Not only is high altitude ballooning a great way to introduce the electronics and programming skills needed to collect …

Scalable Collaborative Targeted Learning For High-Dimensional Data, Cheng Ju, Susan Gruber, Samuel D. Lendle, Antoine Chambaz, Jessica M. Franklin, Richard Wyss, Sebastian Schneeweiss, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Robust inference of a low-dimensional parameter in a large semi-parametric model relies on external estimators of infinite-dimensional features of the distribution of the data. Typically, only one of the latter is optimized for the sake of constructing a well behaved estimator of the low-dimensional parameter of interest. Optimizing more than one of them for the sake of achieving a better bias-variance trade-off in the estimation of the parameter of interest is the core idea driving the C-TMLE procedure.

The original C-TMLE procedure can be presented as a greedy forward stepwise algorithm. It does not scale well when the number $p$ …

One View: Fire Fuels Regeneration In Eastern Sierra, Char Miller

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

Sometimes it’s the small things that can best tell big stories.

Like the Marina Fire, which currently has burned a modest 800 acres to the north of Lee Vining, threatened but did not burn any structures, and whose greatest disruption has been periodically to shut down US 395. It hardly seems worth much attention.

Oversampling Methods For Imbalanced Dataset Classification And Their Application To Gynecological Disorder Diagnosis, Iman Nekooeimehr Jun 2016

Oversampling Methods For Imbalanced Dataset Classification And Their Application To Gynecological Disorder Diagnosis, Iman Nekooeimehr

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In many applications, the dataset for classification may be highly imbalanced where most of the instances in the training set may belong to some of the classes (majority classes), while only a few instances are from the other classes (minority classes). Conventional classifiers will strongly favor the majority class and ignore the minority instances. The imbalance problem can occur in both binary data classification and also in ordinal regression. Ordinal regression is a supervised approach for learning the ordinal relationship between classes. Extensive research has been performed for addressing imbalanced datasets for binary classification; however, current methods do not address …

Enforcing Security Policies On Gpu Computing Through The Use Of Aspect-Oriented Programming Techniques, Bader Albassam

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a new security policy enforcer designed for securing parallel computation on CUDA GPUs. We show how the very features that make a GPGPU desirable have already been utilized in existing exploits, fortifying the need for security protections on a GPGPU. An aspect weaver was designed for CUDA with the goal of utilizing aspect-oriented programming for security policy enforcement. Empirical testing verified the ability of our aspect weaver to enforce various policies. Furthermore, a performance analysis was performed to demonstrate that using this policy enforcer provides no significant performance impact over manual insertion of policy code. Finally, future …

Fast Computation On Processing Data Warehousing Queries On Gpu Devices, Sam Cyrus Jun 2016

Fast Computation On Processing Data Warehousing Queries On Gpu Devices, Sam Cyrus

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Current database management systems use Graphic Processing Units (GPUs) as dedicated accelerators to process each individual query, which results in underutilization of GPU. When a single query data warehousing workload was run on an open source GPU query engine, the utilization of main GPU resources was found to be less than 25%. The low utilization then leads to low system throughput. To resolve this problem, this paper suggests a way to transfer all of the desired data into the global memory of GPU and keep it until all queries are executed as one batch. The PCIe transfer time from CPU …

Digital Integration, Jacob C. Boccio Jun 2016

Digital Integration, Jacob C. Boccio

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The optimal learner for prediction modeling varies depending on the underlying data-generating distribution. Super Learner (SL) is a generic ensemble learning algorithm that uses cross-validation to select among a "library" of candidate prediction models. The SL is not restricted to a single prediction model, but uses the strengths of a variety of learning algorithms to adapt to different databases. While the SL has been shown to perform well in a number of settings, it has not been thoroughly evaluated in large electronic healthcare databases that are common in pharmacoepidemiology and comparative effectiveness research. In this study, we applied and evaluated …

The Progress Of Order-Structured Membrane Electrode Assembly, Shang-Feng Jiang, Bao-Lian Yi Jun 2016

The Progress Of Order-Structured Membrane Electrode Assembly, Shang-Feng Jiang, Bao-Lian Yi

Journal of Electrochemistry

Performances of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have been recently improved. However, the cost and Pt loading must be further reduced for the commercialization of PEMFCs. Previous researches have proved that the order-structured electrode is beneficial to the effective utilization of Pt-based catalysts, decreasing the Pt loading and increasing the three-phase boundary for reaction. Especially, the nanostructure thin films (NSTFs) electrode, an ultra-thin catalytic layer developed by 3M Company, demonstrates high performance and durability. Besides, some other researchers have employed the high conductive carbon nanotube arrays or high stable metal oxide arrays as the order-structured catalyst supports for fundamental …

Reduced Graphene Oxide (Rgo) Hollow Network Cages For High-Performance Electrochemical Energy Storage, Chi Zhang, Xu-Jun He, Gao-Ren Li

Journal of Electrochemistry

The reduced graphese oxide (RGO) hollow network cages were synthesized via zinc oxide (ZnO) template-assisted electrodeposition. The as-prepared RGO hollow network cages exhibited the multi-level architectures, from nano sheets, porous structures, networks, to 3D microscaled hollow cages, which can simultaneously optimize transport of electroactive species, utilization rate of electrode material, and super capacitive performance. Electrochemical measurements confirmed the superior performance of RGO hollow network cages for supercapacitors (SCs), such as high Csp (393 F⋅g-1 at 1.0 A⋅g-1), excellent rate capability (21.2% Csp loss from 1.0 to 20 A⋅g-1), and superior cycling stability (< 1% Csp loss after 10000 cycles).

Holographic Chern-Simons Defects, Mitsutoshi Fujita, Charles M. Melby-Thompson, René Meyer, Shigeki Sugimoto

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We study SU(N ) Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory in the presence of defects that shift the Chern-Simons level from a holographic point of view by embedding the system in string theory. The model is a D3-D7 system in Type IIB string theory, whose gravity dual is given by the AdS soliton background with probe D7 branes attaching to the AdS boundary along the defects. We holographically renormalize the free energy of the defect system with sources, from which we obtain the correlation functions for certain operators naturally associated to these defects. We find interesting phase transitions when the separation of the …
