Sparse Representation For The Isar Image Reconstruction, Mengqi Hu Aug 2016

Sparse Representation For The Isar Image Reconstruction, Mengqi Hu

Theses and Dissertations

In this paper, a sparse representation for the data form a multi-input multi-output based inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) system is derived for two dimensions. The proposed sparse representation motivates the use a of a Convex Optimization directly that recovers the image without the loss information of the image with far less samples that that is required by Nyquist–Shannon sampling theorem, which increases the efficiency and decrease the cost of calculation in radar imaging.

Randomness, Information Encoding, And Shape Replication In Various Models Of Dna-Inspired Self-Assembly, Eric M. Martinez Aug 2016

Randomness, Information Encoding, And Shape Replication In Various Models Of Dna-Inspired Self-Assembly, Eric M. Martinez

Theses and Dissertations

Self-assembly is the process by which simple, unorganized components autonomously combine to form larger, more complex structures. Researchers are turning to self-assembly technology for the design of ever smaller, more complex, and precise nanoscale devices, and as an emerging fundamental tool for nanotechnology.

We introduce the robust random number generation problem, the problem of encoding a target string of bits in the form of a bit string pad, and the problem of shape replication in various models of tile-based self-assembly. Also included are preliminary results in each of these directions with discussion of possible future work directions.

Fuzzy Logic In Health Care Settings: Moral Math For Value-Laden Choices, Sarah Voss Jul 2016

Fuzzy Logic In Health Care Settings: Moral Math For Value-Laden Choices, Sarah Voss

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

This essay is intended as an example of “moral math”, i.e., ideas culled from mathematics which can positively impact social behavior. Specifically, it combines fuzzy logic with the ethical decisions which hospital staff and others are sometimes forced to make about health care (e.g., euthanasia issues following Hurricane Katrina). The assumption is that such decisions involve value-laden choices which lend themselves to “fuzzy” or “smart” protocols. The article discusses the history of fuzzy logic – what it is, how it is used, and how it might be even better-used as a support basis for making difficult choices …

Patterns Formed By Coins, Andrey M. Mishchenko Jul 2016

Patterns Formed By Coins, Andrey M. Mishchenko

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

This article is a gentle introduction to the mathematical area known as circle packing, the study of the kinds of patterns that can be formed by configurations of non- overlapping circles. The first half of the article is an exposition of the two most important facts about circle packings, (1) that essentially whatever pattern we ask for, we may always arrange circles in that pattern, and (2) that under simple conditions on the pattern, there is an essentially unique arrangement of circles in that pattern. In the second half of the article, we consider related questions, but where we …

Variability Of Mars' Seasonal North Polar Cap, Richard W. Schmude Jr. Jul 2016

Variability Of Mars' Seasonal North Polar Cap, Richard W. Schmude Jr.

Georgia Journal of Science

Mars’ seasonal north polar cap (hereafter sNPC) underwent year-to-year changes between 2008 and 2015 or Mars years 29–33. The writer monitored changes in the sNPC using images made with the MARCI camera onboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO). Nine isolated bright spots corresponding to Korolev, Lomonosov, and Louth Craters, the albedo features Ierne, Olympia (or Lemuria), and Cecropia, and three unnamed features were examined. The following was concluded: 1) the sNPC underwent small year-to-year changes between 2008 and 2015 [MY = 29–33], 2) there are no years where all temporary frost features lasted longer than their mean lifespan, and 3) …

Tree-Based Symmetric Key Broadcast Encryption., Sanjay Bhattacherjee Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In symmetric key cryptography, it is assumed that there are two parties Alice and Bob and there is an insecure communication channel between them as shown in Figure 1.1. A cryptographic system can be used to achieve secure communication between these two parties. This cryptographic system assumes that there is a secret K called the key that is known only to Alice and Bob and no one else. The message to be communicated is called the plaintext and is denoted by M. The cryptographic system has an encryption algorithm Enc(M, K) used by the sender that takes as input a …

Petrographic And Geochemical Characteristics Of The Kiejo, Rungwe And Ngozi Volcanic Rocks, Southern Tanzania: Implication For Tectonic Activities And Magmatic Differentiation, Athanas S. Macheyeki

Tanzania Journal of Science

Rock samples were collected from the Kiejo, Rungwe and Ngozi volcanoes, southern Tanzania. Results show that, in the Ngozi and Rungwe volcanoes, magma cooled relatively fast. After large part of the magma had crystallized, nucleation of crystals at a relatively slow rate crystallized from interstitial fluids of the primary magma that had already crystallized fine grained minerals resulting into large grains of minerals. In the Kiejo volcano, both zoned and unzonned olivine crystals exist; unzoned crystals being primary and the zoned ones are secondary. Such observations also indicate that the magma responsible for these rocks had interstitial fluids that crystallized …

From the analysis parameters like Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), alkalinity, turbidity, color and phosphorus disclosed inadequate system performance with treated effluent displaying higher values of organic matter than the allowed discharge limits according to the national standards. Optimal conditions for biogas production such as temperature, pH and type of inoculum were determined through batch experiments. The …

Cl In The Early Solar System, Jeffrey Williams Jul 2016

Cl In The Early Solar System, Jeffrey Williams

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The early solar nebula is thought to have been a turbulent disk of dust and gas. An unknown mechanism caused the disk to collapse, such as a nearby super nova. This collapse led to high temperatures and high particle densities at the mid-plane of the disk. An unknown mechanism caused the temperature in local area to become hot enough to cause some material to melt –creating the first igneous material of the solar system. These melt spherules, called chondrules, cooled and accreted together with dust and ice to form larger bodies called chondrites. Once the chondritic bodies were of sufficient …

Laboratory And Field Evaluation Of Entomopathogenic Fungi For The Control Of Amitraz-Resistant And Susceptible Strains Of Rhipicephalus Decoloratus, Mercy M. Murigu, Paulin Nana, Robert M. Waruiru, Chege J. Nga'nga', Sunday Ekesi, Nguya K. Maniania

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Rhipicephalus decoloratus causes serious economic losses in cattle industry every year in East Africa. Biological control using entomopathogenic fungi is seen as a promising alternative to chemical acaricides being used for their control. The pathogenicity of Metarhizium anisopliae and of Beauveria bassiana isolates was tested in the laboratory against amitraz-resistant and amitraz-susceptible strains of R. decoloratus. Unfed larvae were sprayed with conidial suspensions of 1 × 109 conidia ml-1. Fungal isolates were pathogenic to R. decoloratus larvae, causing mortality of between 10.0 and 100% and between 12.1 and 100% of amitraz-susceptible and amitraz-resistant strains, respectively. The LT50 values of selected …

Modeling The Timeliness Of Airborne Remote Sensing Data, Andrew Loerch Jul 2016

Modeling The Timeliness Of Airborne Remote Sensing Data, Andrew Loerch

Geography ETDs

The model, “Remote Sensing Communication Model” (RSCM), which permits the estimation of the timeliness of remote sensing systems (RSS) is tested (Lippitt, Stow, & Clarke, 2014). This model conceptualizes RSS as having capacities that determine the timeliness of the systems, where a system is comprised of three segments, each with a capacity that determines the timeliness of that segment: acquisition capacity, transmission capacity, and receiver capacity (i.e., the capacity of a human and/or machine analyst to produce information) (Lippitt et al., 2014). Acquisition and transmission capacity analyses are run to aid in the optimization of a flexible time-sensitive remote sensing …

Simulations Of The Angular Dependence Of The Dipole-Dipole Interaction Among Rydberg Atoms, Jacob L. Bigelow, Jacob T. Paul, Matan Peleg, Veronica L. Sanford, Thomas J. Carroll, Michael W. Noel

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The dipole-dipole interaction between two Rydberg atoms depends on the relative orientation of the atoms and on the change in the magnetic quantum number. We simulate the effect of this anisotropy on the energy transport in an amorphous many atom system subject to a homogeneous applied electric field. We consider two experimentally feasible geometries and find that the effects should be measurable in current generation imaging experiments. In both geometries atoms of p character are localized to a small region of space which is immersed in a larger region that is filled with atoms of s character. Energy transfer due …

Coral Persistence To Ocean Warming Via Developmental Acclimation, Heather L. Schaneen Jul 2016

Coral Persistence To Ocean Warming Via Developmental Acclimation, Heather L. Schaneen

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Scleractinian corals are the ‘engineers’ of tropical coral reef ecosystems. Their three-dimensional structure provides habitat for thousands of fish and invertebrate species. The persistence of corals is threatened by climate change. In this study I investigated if corals may be able to increase tolerance to ocean warming through developmental acclimation, i.e. if corals that experience warmer temperatures during embryonic and larval development are better able to cope with higher temperatures later in life. Larvae of the broadcast spawning coral Montastraea cavernosa were raised at ambient (29°C) and future projected ocean warming temperatures (+2°C, 31°C). After larval settlement, coral juveniles from …
