In this thesis, a selenium-derivatized acceptor was synthesized to examine the heavy atom effects of selenium on the position of the frontier molecular orbitals (HOMO/LUMO band gap) as opposed to sulfur in a donor-acceptor copolymer for use in light harvesting and detection applications. Over the course of this research, standard operating protocols for ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis-NIR) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopies, as well as cyclic voltammetry (CV) characterization techniques were established. Once synthesized, the polymers were characterized through use of the established characterization protocols. The goal of this research is to characterize the impact of using an equivalent-fluid method for a solid seabed on the use of time reversal procedures for detecting the origin location of an emitted sound. There are two different ways of modeling how sound propagates through water: modeling sound as a ray and modeling sound as a wave. It is easier to model the propagation of sound through water with a ray model; using a ray model allows for the collection of grazing angles with respect to the bottom. Version control is a technique that software developers use in industry to manage their source code artifacts. One benefit of using version control is that it produces a history of every change made to a codebase, which developers frequently analyze in order to aid the software development process. However, version control history contains highly multidimensional and temporal data. State of the art techniques can show several of these dimensions, but they cannot show a large number of dimensions simultaneously without becoming difficult to understand. New developments in organic synthesis show promise in achieving the best catalytic properties for the hydrolysis of glycosidic bonds through microgel polymers and transition metal complexes. A monomer mix of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, butyl acrylate, and styrene form miniemulsion polymers after sonication and exposure to UV light. Gravimetrical analysis is used to determine the most suitable polymerization conditions by performing experiments at varying pH values, temperatures, monomer amounts, initiator amounts, and lamp heights. Abstract: Cytochrome P450 CYP3A4 is the main drug-metabolizing enzyme in the human liver, being responsible for oxidation of 50% of all pharmaceuticals metabolized by human P450 enzymes. Possessing a large substrate binding pocket, it can simultaneously bind several substrate molecules and often exhibits a complex pattern of drug–drug interactions. Post-translational modifications (PTMs) are steps in biosynthesis to perform this customization of protein for unique functionalities. First, this study sought to determine whether or not exposing Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio parahaemolyticus to polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) would lead to changes in their respective phospholipid profiles. Secondly, if membrane remodeling occurred, this study sought to determine the impact of membrane modifications on bacterial fitness by evaluating their effect on membrane permeability, biofilm formation, and response to stresses. We consider a fractional boundary value problem with various boundary conditions. This boundary value problem has two components, one fractional derivative of alpha degree with alpha between n-1 and n, and a fractional derivative of beta degree with beta between 0 and n-2. We prove existence and uniqueness of solutions, and show some examples that were found using a MATLAB simulation.

Phytophthora root rot (PRR), caused by the oomycete Phytophthora cinnamomi Rands, is a formidable obstacle to the restoration of Castanea dentata Marsh. commonly known as the American chestnut. Genetic resistance to PRR has been observed in Asian species of chestnut including C. mollissima Blume, and in interspecific hybrids between C. mollissima and C. dentata. We hypothesized that root rot resistance alleles would segregate in a 1:1 ratio within progeny of crosses between PRR resistant F1 hybrids and PRR-susceptible American chestnut trees (first-backcrosses), and that PRR resistance could be successfully passed down to all families of first-backcross hybrids. There have been many tables of primes produced since antiquity. In 348 BC Plato studied the divisors of the number 5040. In 1202 Fibonacci gave an example with a list of prime numbers up to 100. By the 1770's a table of number factorizations up to two million was constructed. In 1859 Riemann demonstrated that the key to the deeper understanding of the distribution of prime numbers lies in the study of a certain complex-valued function, called the zeta-function. A simple box model is used to examine oxygen depletion in an idealized ocean-margin upwelling system. Near-bottom oxygen depletion is controlled by a competition between flushing with oxygenated offshore source waters and respiration of particulate organic matter produced near the surface and retained near the bottom. Upwelling-supplied nutrients are consumed in the surface box, and some surface particles sink to the bottom where they respire, consuming oxygen. Steady states characterize the potential for hypoxic near-bottom oxygen depletion; this potential is greatest for faster sinking rates, and largely independent of production timescales except in that faster production allows faster sinking. Variable selection plays a significant role in statistics. There are many variable selection methods. Forward stagewise regression takes a different approach among those. In this thesis Least Angle Regression (LAR) is discussed in detail. This approach has similar principles as forward stagewise regression but does not suffer from its computational difficulties. By using a small artificial data set and the well-known Longley data set, the LAR algorithm is illustrated in detail and the coefficient profiles are obtained. Non-native invasive species are one of the major threats to worldwide ecosystems. Kudzu (Pueraria montana) is a fast-growing vine native to Asia that has invaded regions in the United States making management of this species an important issue. Estimated normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) values for the years 2000 to 2015 were calculated using data collected by Landsat and MODIS platforms for three infestation sites in Kentucky. The present paper investigates non-isothermal flow characteristics through a rotating curved rectangular duct, where co-existence of the rotational forces and fluid temperature gradients leads to the emergence of rotation-induced buoyancy effects. The cyanide ion and its gaseous form, hydrogen cyanide, are extremely toxic. Cyanide impairs cellular respiration by inhibiting cytochrome c oxidase, an enzyme in the electron transport chain, leading to cell death.

In a previous study, we synthesized an optical sensor that detects cyanide selectively. The aim of this project is to increase the sensitivity of this sensor. This can be achieved by utilizing the unique spectroscopic properties of lanthanide ions.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram- negative bacteria that is the leading cause of mortality in immunocompromised patients. Arginyl-tRNA synthetase (ArgRS) is an enzyme that catalyzes the covalent attachment of arginine to the cognate tRNAArg during protein synthesis. Scintillation proximity assays (SPA) were adapted to the aminoacylation assay and used to screen, one natural compound library (800) and one synthetic compound library (890) to identify inhibitors of the activity of ArgRS. In data outsourcing, a client stores a large amount of data on an untrusted server; subsequently, the client can request the server to compute a function on any subset of the data. This setting naturally leads to two security requirements: confidentiality of input data, and authenticity of computations. Existing approaches that satisfy both requirements simultaneously are built on fully homomorphic encryption, which involves expensive computation on the server and client and hence is impractical.
