The Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) continues to expand but faces challenges such as cryptographic overhead and energy consumption. Security frameworks such as blockchain and Energy-Performance Cumulative Message Authentication Codes (EP-CuMAC) rely heavily on SHA-256, which is not optimized for energy-limited devices.
This work unifies two complementary approaches, a hybrid blockchain-based NB-IoT framework and an EP-CuMAC-based framework, by engineering their cryptographic core with an Energy Complexity Model-optimized SHA-256 (ECM-SHA256). ECM applies parallel memory-bank mapping and block-level access optimization to reduce redundant power usage while preserving algorithmic integrity.

To address climate change, our energy systems need to transition from fossil fuels to clean energy resources. There is a tendency to think this transition will occur in a linear, seamless progression: We will move from the (old) fossil fuel system at Time A to a (new) clean energy system at Time B. But this belies the reality that an energy transition involves not just building a new energy system, but also unwinding an old one. Crucially, both processes will take time. That means there will be a significant period in which both energy systems coexist.

Informed consent is the law’s mechanism for protecting patient autonomy by requiring disclosure of facts that bear on the decision to accept or refuse care. Artificial intelligence now helps decide what is medically true for patients, yet informed consent law still assumes that diagnostic judgment is rendered by a human mind whose reasoning is at least in principle communicable. Radiology has become the leading setting for this tension. AI systems triage worklists, flag suspected abnormalities, and anchor first-pass impressions in ways that guide radiologists’ attention and, in practice, can coauthor diagnostic conclusions while remaining invisible to patients. A triathlon is a multi-sport event that consists of three simultaneous events: swimming, biking, and running. This sport has experienced significant growth in the past few decades, with colleges and universities now participating. This exploratory mixed-methods study examined the motivations and perceived health benefits of college triathletes during the COVID-19 pandemic, using the Means-Ends of Recreation Scale and the Perceived Health Outcomes of Recreation Scale (N = 29), as well as semi-structured interviews (N = 4). The rapid emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) has raised important questions about how new technologies will shape professional norms and practices in counseling. The purpose of this study was to understand how counseling professionals expect AI to be integrated into counselor education and supervision (CES). Using a mixed‐methods concept mapping design, 31 participants generated and sorted statements about the potential roles, benefits, and concerns associated with AI in the profession. Participants represented diverse counseling roles, including counselor educators, licensed professional counselors, supervisors, master's‐ and doctoral‐level trainees, and other counseling‐related professionals. Groundwater resources in the Colorado River Basin are critically stressed yet remain under-monitored and under-regulated, creating urgent need for reliable, continuous observations at multiple spatial scales. This study evaluates the performance of the University of Montana Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) terrestrial water storage dataset as a tool for bridging groundwater monitoring gaps across the Upper and Lower Colorado River Basins between 2006 and 2024. We compare GNSS-derived total water storage and groundwater storage estimates against NASA’s Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite observations and in-situ groundwater well measurements at regional and sub-regional scales. Despite the economic significance of the Messinian Abu Madi Formation as a primary gas reservoir target in the Nile Delta Basin, a high-resolution, field-scale integration of seismic sequence stratigraphy with quantitative petrophysical characterization remains lacking for the Baltim area. This study addresses this gap by presenting an integrated seismic sequence stratigraphic and petrophysical analysis of the Upper Miocene Abu Madi Formation within the prolific Baltim gas fields, offshore Nile Delta, Egypt. This study investigates the modification of glass substrates with TiO₂ thin films to enhance surface hydrophilicity and self-cleaning behavior. The films were deposited on glass by spin coating using different precursor concentrations, followed by thermal treatment. Structural and optical properties were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and UV–Vis spectroscopy, while surface wettability was evaluated through water contact angle measurements. XRD confirmed the formation of pure anatase TiO₂, while FTIR spectra verified the presence of Ti–O and Ti–O–Ti bonds. The Cigalère Cave is a 21 km-long karstic cave located in the Ariège Department, in the French Pyrenees, and underlies directly the Bentaillou Pb-Zn-Fe sulfide ores. The cave hosts abundant gypsum mineralizations, some of them exhibiting various colorations including blue, yellow, purple, orange and black. Due to strict preservation policies, these colored mineralizations have not been studied much. Here we propose a non-destructive characterization of five distinct gypsum or carbonate speleothem structures from the Cigalère, exhibiting different colorations. Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) improves factual grounding in large language models by incorporating external evidence during inference. However, most RAG systems rely on fixed retrieval strategies that ignore query difficulty, computational cost, and prediction uncertainty. This project introduces SAFE-R2R (Safety-Aware and Budget-Optimized Reason-to-Retrieve), a retrieval controller that treats retrieval as a query-dependent decision problem. SAFE-R2R organizes retrieval into a multi-rung ladder ranging from no retrieval to deeper retrieval with reranking. At each rung, the system generates an answer, computes reliability signals, and combines them into a risk score used within a conformal calibration framework to decide whether to accept the answer …

Stepwise Sudoku Reasoning Training Using Transformers, Lok Man Chu

Sudoku is a constraint satisfaction problem that serves as a testbed for studying reasoning and stepwise deduction. While many solvers can produce correct solutions, they often fail to generate human interpretable sequences of logically consistent steps. This study investigates whether a transformer trained on stepwise deduction traces can learn to solve Sudoku puzzles through sequential, logically deducible moves. Results show that solve accuracy improves significantly with more training data, reaching approximately 78% at 1500k samples. Stepwise analysis indicates that the model effectively learns simple strategies, achieving near-perfect performance. However, performance on more complex strategies remains limited. In many industries, it is important to assess whether a machine or system is operating within acceptable limits or has gone out of control. This project applies Bayesian statistics to monitor a process over time and detect changes in its behavior. First, initial data are collected to understand the system’s typical performance and to form a starting prior distribution. As new observations arrive over time, the prior is updated through Bayesian inference, combining past information with incoming data. The escalating global demand for sustainable energy storage solutions has driven intensive research into novel electrode materials. Polyanion-based cathode materials have emerged as promising candidates due to their structural stability, safety, and voltage tunability enabled by the inductive effect of polyanionic groups. This research explores the synthesis, crystal structure, and electrochemical performance of new polyanion-based cathode materials featuring vanadium, molybdenum, and iron within phosphate and selenite frameworks.

Federated Learning (FL), which facilitates collaborative model training and protects users' privacy, has drawn great interest from the research community. With FL, the participants train their models on local data and submit the corresponding updates for aggregation to a server. While concealing the participants' identities, FL may attract adversaries aiming to hamper the underlying model. These adversaries aim to submit malicious weight updates that corrupt the performance of the server model. In this dissertation, we propose a uniform functional form of the dielectric function of solids that is applicable over a wide range of frequencies. We apply our model to describe the dielectric function of two technologically important materials: silicon and calcium fluoride. The temperature dependence of their dielectric functions is also described using simple analytic forms. We found that a generalized Sellmeier-type model with complex denominators (“damped oscillators”) does not lead to a satisfactory fit of experimental data for the dielectric function. In contrast, our model, which is analytically only slightly more involved (“complex oscillator strengths”, complex numerators), allows us …

Recurrent event data arise in many fields such as medicine, reliability, insurance, and economics, where the same event may occur repeatedly for a subject. Accelerated Failure Time (AFT) models provide an intuitive framework for relating covariates to event times and offer a useful alternative to proportional hazards models, allowing direct prediction of event timing under right censoring. However, existing AFT extensions for recurrent events, such as accelerated gap time (AGT) models, often fail to account for interventions between events and may not capture complex temporal patterns.

Clustering and supervised learning are often treated as distinct paradigms, yet both rely on structure in feature space. This dissertation investigates the relationship between cluster validity indices (CVIs) and supervised learning in real-time and lifelong learning settings where data arrive incrementally and cannot be revisited. Across four studies, it develops methods for online cluster validation, uses supervised learning to improve their interpretability, and applies these ideas to evaluating performance degradation in continual learning.

The observation of hybrid mesons in photoproduction experiments can provide essential insight into the inner workings of quantum chromodynamics in the strong coupling regime. In particular, the study of final η(′)π states is of great interest due to the presence of the lowest lying hybrid candidate with manifestly exotic quantum numbers, the π₁ (1600). In this work, a double-vector exchange model with Reggeized ρ and ω trajectories is developed to describe the photoproduction of η(′)π in the high-mass region. The Super High Momentum Spectrometer (SHMS) has been built for Hall C at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab). With a momentum capability reaching 11 GeV/c, the SHMS provides measurements of charged particles produced in electron-scattering experiments using the maximum available beam energy from the upgraded Jefferson Lab accelerator. The SHMS is an ion-optics magnetic spectrometer comprised of a series of new superconducting magnets which transport charged particles through an array of triggering, tracking, and particle-identification detectors that measure momentum, energy, angle and position in order to allow kinematic reconstruction of the events back to their origin at …

Context: Reliable prediction of space radiation exposure is critical for safeguarding spacecraft systems and ensuring astronaut health during missions. Accurate radiation risk assessment for space mission requires advanced models of the Earth’s trapped proton environment. These models must reflect temporal variations driven by geomagnetic field evolution and solar cycle modulation. Existing static models, such as AP8 and IRENE-AP9, are not designed to fully capture these evolving conditions. Hybrid qubit-qumode quantum computing platforms provide a natural setting for simulating interacting bosonic quantum field theories. However, existing continuous-variable gate constructions rely predominantly on polynomial functions of canonical quadratures. In this work, we introduce a complementary universality paradigm based on trigonometric continuous-variable gates, which enable a Fourier-like representation of bosonic operators and are particularly well suited for periodic and non-perturbative interactions. We present an ancilla-based framework for implementing trigonometric gates with arguments given by arbitrary Hermitian functions of qumode quadratures. The protocol yields unitary gates deterministically, and non-unitary gates through probabilistic post-selection. As a concrete application, we develop a hybrid …

The next-generation DIRC (xpDIRC) represents a novel detector geometry concept currently being developed for advanced particle identification systems in high-energy physics experiments. Building upon the high-performance DIRC (hpDIRC) designed for the ePIC detector at the Electron-Ion Collider, the xpDIRC introduces a hybrid optical architecture that combines enhanced focusing optics, a wide plate light guide, and a compact expansion volume. Comprehensive Geant4 simulations demonstrate that the xpDIRC hybrid geometry achieves state-of-the-art performance in π/K separation across the entire range of operation.

The Heavy Photon Search experiment (HPS) is a fixed-target, electron beam experiment designed to search for 𝑒+𝑒− mass resonances and displaced decays using a forward acceptance spectrometer. This paper details the search for naturally long-lived “dark” vector mesons (𝑉𝐷) arising from a dark sector of beyond-Standard-Model strongly interacting massive particles, characterized by a QCD-like 𝑆𝑈(3)𝐷 symmetry and coupled to the Standard Model photon via a new 𝑈(1)𝐷 gauge interaction mediated by the “heavy photon,” or 𝐴′. Measurements of semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering multiplicities for 𝜋⁺ and 𝜋⁻ from proton and deuteron targets are reported on a grid of hadron kinematic variables 𝑧, 𝑃𝑇, and 𝜙* for leptonic kinematic variables in the range 0.3< 𝑥< 0.6 and 3< 𝑄²< 5GeV². Data were acquired in 2018 and 2019 at Jefferson Lab Hall C with a 10.6 GeV electron beam impinging on 10-cm-long liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets. Scattered electrons and charged pions were detected in the High Momentum Spectrometer and Super High Momentum Spectrometer, respectively. The multiplicities were fitted for each bin in (𝑥,𝑄²,𝑧,𝑃𝑡) to extract the 𝜙*—independent 𝑀₀ and the azimuthal modulations ⟨cos(𝜙*)⟩ and ⟨cos(2𝜙*)⟩. The 𝑃𝑡 dependence of the 𝑀₀ results was found to be remarkably consistent for the four cases studied: 𝑒𝑝→𝑒𝜋+𝑋, 𝑒𝑝→𝑒𝜋−𝑋, 𝑒𝑑→𝑒𝜋+𝑋, 𝑒𝑑→𝑒𝜋−𝑋 over the range 0GeV< 𝑃𝑡< 0.4GeV, as were the multiplicities evaluated near 𝜙*=180∘ over the extended range 0GeV< 𝑃𝑡< 0.7GeV. The Gaussian widths of the 𝑃𝑡 dependence exhibit a quadratic increase with 𝑧. The cos(𝜙*) modulations were found to be consistent with zero for 𝜋⁺, in agreement with previous world data, while the 𝜋− moments were, in many cases, significantly greater than zero. The real-time correlators of quantum field theories can be directly probed through new approaches to simulation, such as quantum computing and tensor networks. This provides a new framework for computing scattering observables in lattice formulations of strongly interacting theories, such as lattice quantum chromodynamics. In this paper, we prove that the proposal of real-time estimators of scattering observables is universally applicable to all scattering observables of gapped quantum field theories. We report on the first measurement of angular correlations between high-energy pions and slow protons in electron-nucleus (eA) scattering, providing a new probe of how a nucleus responds to a fast-moving quark. The experiment employed the CLAS detector with a 5-GeV electron beam incident on deuterium, carbon, iron, and lead targets. For heavier nuclei, the pion-proton correlation function is more spread-out in azimuth than for lighter ones, and this effect is more pronounced in the πp channel than in earlier ππ studies. The proton-to-pion yield ratio likewise rises with nuclear mass, although the increase appears to saturate for …
