However, even accurate approximations of solving Schr¨odinger Equation, such as high order coupled cluster theories, require computational efforts that are too demanding to be applied on large chemical systems. This thesis tackles the problem of curse of dimensionality: how to reduce the time complexity of high-accuracy coupled cluster methods in order to accelerate computations of molecular energy. Topological phases in classical wave systems, such as photonic and acoustic, have been actively investigated and applied for wave guiding, lasing, and numerous other novel phenomena and device applications Topological phase transitions enable robust boundary states, and the field has been broadening recently into a vast variety of systems with temporal modulations and interactions. Floquet modulation, for example, is the modulation applied periodically in time which may break symmetries and leads to novel topological phases.

SimRank is a popular link-based similarity measure on graphs. It enables a variety of applications with different modes of querying (e.g., single-pair, single-source and all-pair modes). In this paper, we propose UISim, a unified and incremental framework for all SimRank modes based on a scheduled approximation principle. UISim processes queries with incremental and prioritized exploration of the entire computation space, and thus allows flexible tradeoff of time and accuracy. We study the task of learning and evaluating Chinese idiom embeddings. We first construct a new evaluation dataset that contains idiom synonyms and antonyms. Observing that existing Chinese word embedding methods may not be suitable for learning idiom embeddings, we further present a BERT-based method that directly learns embedding vectors for individual idioms. We empirically compare representative existing methods and our method. We find that our method substantially outperforms existing methods on the evaluation dataset we have constructed.

In this paper we use a data driven SIR model to capture the dynamics of the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in the state of Michigan. The model is then used to formulate an optimal control problem in which we perform sensitivity analysis involving vaccine efficacy and capacity, and vaccination willingness by the public. We obtain numerical approximations for best strategies for vaccination, treatment, and social distancing measures and their effect on the spread of the virus.

We describe a correspondence between the infinitesimal deformations of a periodic bar-and-joint framework and periodic arrangements of quadrics. This intrinsic correlation provides useful geometric characteristics. A direct consequence is a method for detecting auxetic deformations, identified by a pattern consisting of homothetic ellipsoids. Examples include frameworks with higher crystallographic symmetry.

In contrast with the “ethics response”, critics consider the “lawfulness response” more capable of disciplining the excesses of the technology industry. One of the most important issues in contemporary societies is the impact of intelligent technologies on human work. For an empirical perspective on the issue, we recently completed 30 case studies of people collaborating with AI-enabled smart machines. Twenty-four were from North America, mostly in the US. Six were from Southeast Asia, mostly in Singapore. We compare some of our observations to one of the broadest academic examinations of the issue. In particular, we focus on our case study observations with regard to key findings from the MIT Task Force on the Work of the Future report.

Emotion inference enables in-vehicle applications to improve driver comfort, well-being, and safety. In recent years, small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) have been used widely to monitor animals because of their customizability, ease of operating, ability to access difficult to navigate places, and potential to minimize disturbance to animals. Little is known about disease transmission relevant contact rates at the wildlife-livestock interface and the factors shaping them. Indirect contact via shared resources is thought to be important but remains unquantified in most systems, making it challenging to evaluate the impact of livestock management practices on contact networks. Fluid interaction between virtual agents and humans requires the understanding of many issues of conversational pragmatics. One such issue is the interaction between communication strategy and personality. As a step towards developing models of personality driven pragmatics policies, in this paper, we present our initial experiment to explore differences in user interaction with two contrasting avatar personalities. Each user saw a single personality in a video-call setting and gave feedback on the interaction. The bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) is used to describe reflectances of materials by calculating the ratio of the reflected radiance to the incident irradiance. While it was found that the isotropic models maintained symmetry about ϕs  =  π, such symmetry was not maintained about the θs  =  θi axis, except for close to the specular peak. This led to the development of a data-driven metric for how isotropic a BRDF measurement is. Background

The prevalence of hypertension is increasing in Bangladesh, however, few recent studies investigated the proportion of people and factors associated with prevalence, awareness, and control of this condition in this country. This study investigated these among Bangladeshi adults.

Methods

Using Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey 2017–18 data, a cross-sectional study was conducted. Multilevel logistic regression analysis was employed after descriptive analysis and prevalence estimation.

Results

Among 12,926 persons (mean age: 40 years, 57% women), the prevalence of hypertension was 27.4% (n = 3551), it was 28.4 and 26.2% among females and males, respectively. Among hypertensive people, about 42.4% …

Parallel/Distributed particle filters were introduced to improve the performance of sequential particle filters by using multiple processing units (PUs). The classical resampling algorithm used in parallel/distributed particle filters is a centralized scheme, called centralized resampling, which needs a central unit (CU) to serve as a hub for data transfers.
