Based on the morpho-genetic study of stygobiotic shrimps from the genus Xiphocaridinella Sadowsky, 1930 (Crustacea: Decapoda: Atyidae), a hydrogeological connection of a number of distant caves in Central Abkhazia of the southwestern Caucasus is satisfied, which indicates the possibility of using biospeleological studies in some cases to identify karst hydrosystems together with traditional hydrogeological methods. Moreover, a new stygobiotic atyid shrimp from the genus Xiphocaridinella, X. kelasuri sp. n., is described based on morphology and analysis of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I DNA sequences from three distant caves. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of protein/energy supplementation and sward physical characteristics on grazing behaviour of lactating ewes grazing Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.). The experiment was carried out in the spring of 1999 at the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria. The grazing behaviour was assessed in two periods: 2 and 3 September, and 8 and 9 October of 1999, using a group of twelve yearling ewes. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) sward height on grazing activities. The experiment was carried out at the Research Station of Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Yearling no-castrated male lambs behavior was assessed in terms of diurnal grazing, ruminating and idling time in three periods: 27 September 11 and 25 October. Grazing Behavior And Activity Patterns By Free-Grazing Cattle In The Pantanal Region, S. A. Santos, C. Costa, L. V. A. S. Chalita, A. Pott, J. M. Alvarez, A. G. Ortiz

A study of habitat selection and habitat use by free-grazing cattle was conducted in the Pantanal, from October 1997 to September 1999. Observation periods lasted 13 hours per day during three days in each month. The location and activity duration of each group of animals was recorded by continuous sampling. Rumination, walking and resting times were affected (P < 0,05) by interaction between month and year and grazing time differed (P < 0,05) only between months. On average, cows spent 54.9, 29.6, 10.6 and 4.9% of their diurnal hours grazing, ruminating, walking and resting, respectively. The grazing time spent in each landscape unit was influenced (P < 0,05) by interaction between month and year. The cows exploited more intensively the temporary ponds in 97/98 (26 min ha-1) and the edge of ponds in 98/99 (23.2 min ha-1). Therefore, the adequate grazing management practice may not follow fixed rules for the Pantanal.

It is well known that NaCl salt crystals can easily dissolve in dilute aqueous solutions at room temperature. Herein, we reported the first computational evidence of a novel salt nucleation behavior at room temperature, i.e., the spontaneous formation of two-dimensional (2D) alkali chloride crystalline/non-crystalline nanostructures in dilute aqueous solution under nanoscale confinement. Microsecond-scale classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations showed that NaCl or LiCl, initially fully dissolved in confined water, can spontaneously nucleate into 2D monolayer nanostructures with either ordered or disordered morphologies. Sentiment analysis is also known as opinion mining. Sentiment analysis is contextual mining of text which identifies and extracts subjective information in textual data. It is extremely used by business, educational organizations, and social media monitoring to gain the general outlook of the wide public regarding their product and policy. The current study looks for gaining insights into user reviews on the National Digital Library of India (NDLI) mobile app (android and iOS). For this purpose, sentiment analysis will be used. This dissertation reports and examines contributions made in the advancement of inorganic photochemistry. Empirically driven assessments are allotted to the interplay between ligand sets, excited states, and photochemistry observed in metal complexes. A methodical spectroscopic examination is provided for oligothiophene-sensitized lanthanides. Their excited state dynamics were elucidated by femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy and used to develop a model explaining their wavelength-dependent dual functionality. Iron (II) cyanide and isocyanides are evaluated to identify the efficacy of strong-field ligands in promoting charge-transfer excited states. Fundamentals of ligand field theory helped conceptualize the synthetically tunable parameters and effects transposed to their absorption dynamics. Transition …

This work focuses on total organic carbon (TOC) and contributing species in cloud water over Southeast Asia using a rare airborne dataset collected during NASA’s Cloud, Aerosol and Monsoon Processes Philippines Experiment (CAMP2Ex), in which a wide variety of maritime clouds were studied, including cumulus congestus, altocumulus, altostratus, and cumulus. Knowledge of TOC masses and their contributing species is needed for improved modeling of cloud processing of organics and to understand how aerosols and gases impact and are impacted by clouds. Field observations have shown stand reduction and slow spring regrowth of Tifton 85 bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.) pastures overseeded with temperate forages for grazing during the cool season. This experiment compared the effect of cool-season management programs, including overseeding and use of different grazing treatments, on productivity of Tifton 85 the following warm season. There were seven treatments: four were bermudagrass overseeded with a cool-season annual forage mixture (two grasses and two legumes) and grazed differentially, and three were bermudagrass controls with differences in amount of residual stubble remaining at beginning of autumn. To provide commercial growers with forage grasses that produce well throughout the year, there is a constant need for screening and testing new germplasm. Two rhodesgrasses (Chloris gayana cv. Rhods and Callide), four stargrasses (Cynodon nlemfuensis Vanderyst var. nlemfuensis cv. Florona, Zimbabwe, Okeechobee, and Rhodesian No. 2), one bermudagrass (C. dactylon var. dactylon cv. Jiggs), and one creeping signalgrass (Brachiaria humidicola CIAT 6369) were tested under a mob-grazing system. Studies were conducted on an experimental pasture belonging to the Arrhenatherethum medioeur. and Lolio-Cynosureth. assoc. with D. glomerata, L. perenne and T. repens as main species, at an altitude of 680 m. Four equally sized paddocks (0.3 ha) were grazed by 10 Charolais heifers. The differences in total herbage dry matter intake (HDMI) between the four paddocks with different grazing initiation dates (GID) were significant (P < 0.05). The results of this experiment show that in order to achieve a higher HDMI and better herbage utilization an earlier initiation of grazing is recommended. That is, grazing should commence when the sward height is about 15 cm.

This thesis concerns problems related to the ramification behaviour of the branched Galois covers of smooth projective connected curves defined over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. Our first main problem is the Inertia Conjecture proposed by Abhyankar in 2001. We will show several new evidence for this conjecture. We also formulate a certain generalization of it which is our second problem, and we provide evidence for it. Microglia act as the immune cells of the central nervous system (CNS). They play an important role in maintaining brain homeostasis but also in mediating neuroimmune responses to insult. The interactions between neurons and microglia represent a key process for neuroimmune regulation and subsequent effects on CNS integrity. However, the molecular mechanisms of neuron-glia communication in regulating microglia function are not fully understood. One recently described means of this intercellular communication is via nano-sized extracellular vesicles (EVs) that transfer a large diversity of molecules between neurons and microglia, such as proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. In this thesis, we study some probabilistic models of random interfaces. Interfaces between different phases have been topic of considerable interest in statistical physics. These interfaces are described by a family of random variables, indexed by the ddimensional integer lattice, which are considered as a height configuration, namely they indicate the height of the interface above a reference hyperplane. The models are defined in terms of an energy function (Hamiltonian), which defines a Gibbs measure on the set of height configurations. Finite element methods for symmetric linear hyperbolic systems using unstructured advancing fronts (satisfying a causality condition) are considered in this work. Convergence results and error bounds are obtained for mapped tent pitching schemes made with standard discontinuous Galerkin discretizations for spatial approximation on mapped tents. Techniques to study semidiscretization on mapped tents, design fully discrete schemes, prove local error bounds, prove stability on spacetime fronts, and bound error propagated through unstructured layers are developed.

Chagas disease (CD), caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, is a public health concern, mainly among countries in South and Central America. However, despite the large number of immigrants from endemic countries living in the USA, awareness of CD is poor in the medical community, and therefore it is significantly underdiagnosed. To avoid the catastrophic cardiac complications of CD and to prevent maternal–fetal transmission, widespread educational programs highlighting the need for diagnosis are urgently needed.

Vermiculations are aggregates of small particles commonly found on cave walls. They are a major concern for the conservation of painted caves, as they can potentially alter valuable prehistoric cave paintings. A previous rheological study of fine sediment deposits on cave walls revealed that this material can undergo a solid-to-liquid transition triggered by variations in the chemical composition of the water film on the wall. Such a transition could occur at the origin of vermiculations by allowing the sediment to flow under low mechanical stress. The viability of double cropping corn (Zea mays L.) in Uruguay, germplasm combination, dry matter yield and nutritive value were evaluated. An early (E) maturing hybrid, an early to medium (E-M) one and an E-M variety were planted as spring crops. One E-M hybrid, one medium to late (M-L) hybrid and a late (L) variety were planted as a second crop. Spatial distribution of herbage mass (HM) was monitored two-dimensionally during the grazing season (from May to November) in a bahiagrass pasture rotationally grazed by cattle. An electronic capacitance probe was used to estimate HM in 1464 permanent positions (50 × 50 cm) whose centres formed 1.5 × 1.5 m grids in the central 90 × 34.5 m area of the pasture. The highest mean HM was in September and October, while coefficient of variation in November. To obtain information on spatially heterogeneous grazing by large herbivores at different time scales, spatial distribution of herbage mass and rate of defoliation was investigated on a bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flügge) pasture grazed by cattle during 4 to 5-day grazing periods in May, August and October. Pre-grazing herbage mass (Mpre) showed decreasing mean values and increasing spatial heterogeneity with the progress of grazing in all grazing periods, while the rate of defoliation showed inconsistent changes with season. To obtain some information about the mechanisms behind the spatially heterogeneous grazing of a pasture by large herbivores, the relationships between the spatial distributions of herbage mass, herbage consumption and ingestive behavior were investigated on a bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flügge) pasture during a 6-day grazing period with cattle. The animals almost always consumed more herbage from locations with higher pre-grazing herbage masses, which was attributed to greater bite weights. Automated systems designed for screening contraband items from the X-ray imagery are still facing difficulties with high clutter, concealment, and extreme occlusion. In this paper, we addressed this challenge using a novel multi-scale contour instance segmentation framework that effectively identifies the cluttered contraband data within the baggage X-ray scans. Unlike standard models that employ region-based or keypoint-based techniques to generate multiple boxes around objects, we propose to derive proposals according to the hierarchy of the regions defined by the contours. The proposed framework is rigorously validated on three public datasets, dubbed GDXray, SIXray, and OPIXray, where it outperforms the state-of-the-art …
