Single-ion magnets (SIMs) are at the forefront of molecular electronic spin magnets with potential applications in magnetic memory storage devices. However, the magnetic properties of the SIMs are yet to be completely understood, especially the magnetic properties of large anisotropy systems. A part of this dissertation is to utilize optical and neutron spectroscopies such as far-IR magneto-spectroscopy (FIRMS) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to quantify the anisotropy and study the phonon properties of the SIMs as two-dimensional (2-D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) or coordination polymer (CP), and a molecular magnet. The transition is focused on cleaning up power generation by converting coal, natural gas, and oil-based power generation to renewables and nuclear energy. This work concerns the spectra of doubly stochastic matrices whose entries are rational numbers with a bounded denominator. When the bound is fixed, we consider the enumeration of these matrices and also the enumeration of the orbits under the action of the symmetric group.

In the case where the bound is two, we investigate the symmetric case. Such matrices are in fact doubly stochastic, and have a nice characterization when we are in the special case where the diagonal is zero. In this dissertation, three primary issues are explored. The first subject exposes who-saw-from-whom pathways in post-specific dissemination networks in social media platforms. We describe a network-based approach for temporal, textual, and post-diffusion network inference. The conditional point process method discovers the most probable diffusion network. The tool is capable of meaningful analysis of hundreds of post shares. Inferred diffusion networks demonstrate disparities in information distribution between user groups (confirmed versus unverified, conservative versus liberal) and local communities (political, entrepreneurial, etc.). A promising approach for quantifying post-impact, we observe discrepancies in inferred networks that indicate the disproportionate amount of automated bots. …

The broad-line region (BLR) size–luminosity relation has paramount importance for estimating the mass of black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Traditionally, the size of the Hβ BLR is often estimated from the optical continuum luminosity at 5100 Å, while the size of the Hα BLR and its correlation with the luminosity is much less constrained. As a part of the Seoul National University AGN Monitoring Project, which provides 6 yr photometric and spectroscopic monitoring data, we present our measurements of the Hα lags of high-luminosity AGNs. The Northern Hemisphere winter is the main rainy season for the Arabian Peninsula (AP), Central Southwest Asia (CSWA), and Southern Africa (SF), where precipitation predictability is limited or understudied. This dissertation research focuses on improving our understanding of these regions' wet-season precipitation characteristics and predictability.

First, I have identified the AP's key moisture sources through a Lagrangian back-trajectory algorithm. Mid-latitude land and water bodies, such as the Mediterranean and Caspian Seas, are the primary moisture sources in the northern region. Concentrations, compositions, and variability of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in sewage sludge are characterized using an extensive dataset of 350 samples from 190 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) across Michigan. All samples are comprised of final treated sewage sludge generated at the end of the wastewater treatment process. Concentrations of Σ24 PFAS are log normally distributed with a range of 1 to 3200 ng/g dry wt. and of average 108 ± 277 ng/g dry wt. Compounds with carboxyl and sulfonic functional groups comprised 29% and 71% of Σ24 PFAS concentrations, respectively, on average. Primary sample variability is associated …

Large knowledge gaps concerning the effect of ocean surface waves on near-surface vertical distributions of temperature and humidity in the marine atmospheric surface layer exist due to practical limitations and sensor fidelity challenges of direct measurements. Wave effects on these distributions between the wave trough and crest are least studied within the literature. These scalar distributions influence atmospheric refractivity, which can lead to anomalous propagation of electromagnetic energy. Numerical Modeling (NM) is widely used to simulate and predict hydrodynamic processes and marine particle movements in coastal oceans, particularly during extreme weather events and emergencies. NM offers the capability to realistically simulate multiple state variables and fill gaps caused by scarce observations. In general, integer linear programming is NP-hard. However, there exists a class of integer linear programming problems for which an efficient algorithm is possible: the class of so-called unit two-variable-per-inequality (UTVPI) constraints. In this paper, we provide an intuitive explanation for why an efficient algorithm turned out to be possible for this class. Namely, the smaller the class, the more probable it is that a feasible algorithm is possible for this class, and the UTVPI class is indeed the smallest -- in some reasonable sense described in this paper.

For normalized fuzzy sets, intersection is, in general, not normalized. So, if we want to limit ourselves to normalized fuzzy sets, we need to normalize the intersection. It is known that for algebraic product, the normalized intersection is associative, and that for many other "and"-operations (t-norms), normalized intersection is not associative. In this paper, we prove that algebraic product is the only "and"-operation (even the only "and-like" operation) for which normalized intersection is associative.

This PhD dissertation research has developed a simple, miniaturized, sensitive, selective, reproducible, and disposable 3D (inkjet printed – additive manufacturing technology) gold (Au) plated electrochemical sensor (ECS) on shape memory polymer (SMP) for aqueous lead detection. This technology has shown promising performance in the application of electrochemical sensing (lead (II) detection) due to increased effective electrode surface area (7.25 mm^2 ± 0.15 mm^2) despite miniaturizing lateral surface area (4.19 mm^2). Radical ion pairs (RIPs) have been used to demonstrate quantum teleportation in molecular systems for applications in quantum information science. Covalent organic donor-acceptor (D-A) molecules can produce RIPs through photo-induced charge transfer and an additional radical (R) molecule makes quantum teleportation possible. We present the electronic structure and analyze charge transfer excited states of a recently studied [1] D-A-R molecular system using density functional theory. The distances between donor-acceptor and donor-radical are about 12.9 \AA $\,$ and 21.9 \AA, respectively. Conventional statistical methods struggle to handle their complexity, making analysis intricate. In response, we've formulated a robust estimator tailored to counter outliers and heavy-tailed errors. Our approach integrates the SCAD penalty into the Density Power Divergence method, effectively reducing insignificant coefficients to zero.
