Defining Entanglement Without Tensor Factoring: A Euclidean Hourglass Prescription, Takanori Anegawa, Norihiro Iizuka, Daniel Kabat

We consider entanglement across a planar boundary in flat space. Entanglement entropy is usually thought of as the von Neumann entropy of a reduced density matrix, but it can also be thought of as half the von Neumann entropy of a product of reduced density matrices on the left and right. The latter form allows a natural regulator in which two cones are smoothed into a Euclidean hourglass geometry. Since there is no need to tensor factor the Hilbert space, the regulated entropy is manifestly gauge invariant and has a manifest state-counting interpretation. In QCD with $N_c$ colors the antisymmetric valence quark color space singlet state $\sim \epsilon_{i_1\cdots i_{N_c}} |i_1,\cdots, i_{N_c}\rangle$ of the proton corresponds to the reduced density matrix $\rho_{ij}=(1/N_c) \delta_{ij}$ for a single color degree of freedom. Its degenerate spectrum of eigenvalues, $\lambda_i=1/N_c$, the purity $\tr \rho^2 = 1/N_c$, and the von Neumann entropy $S_\mathrm{vN}=\log(N_c)$ all indicate maximal entanglement of color. On the other hand, for $N_c\to\infty$ the spatial wave function of the proton factorizes into valence quark wave functions determined by a mean field [E. Witten, Nucl. Phys. B160, 57 (1979)] where there is no entanglement of spatial degrees of …

We introduce and initiate the study of a general class of 2d N = (0, 2) quiver gauge theories, defined in terms of certain 2-dimensional CW complexes on oriented 3- manifolds. We refer to this class of theories as BFT2’s. They are natural generalizations of Brane Brick Models, which capture the gauge theories on D1-branes probing toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds. The dynamics and triality of the gauge theories translate into simple transformations of the underlying CW complexes. We introduce various combinatorial tools for analyzing these theories and investigate their connections to toric Calabi-Yau manifolds, which arise as their …

We study direct and indirect excitons in Rydberg states in phosphorene monolayers, bilayers, and van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure in an external magnetic field within the framework of the effective-mass approximation. The magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the monolayer or heterostructure and is varied between 0 and 60 T. Binding energies of magnetoexcitons are calculated by numerical integration of the Schrödinger equation using the Rytova-Keldysh potential for direct magnetoexcitons and both the Rytova-Keldysh and Coulomb potentials for indirect magnetoexcitons. The latter aids in the understanding of the role of screening in phosphorene. We report the magnetic field energy contribution …

Recently, the first instance of a model of D-branes at Calabi-Yau singularities where supersymmetry is broken dynamically into stable vacua has been proposed. This construction was based on a system of N regular and M = 1 fractional branes placed at the tip of the so-called (orientifolded) Octagon singularity. In this paper we show that this model admits a large M generalization, having the same low energy effective dynamics. This opens up the possibility that the effect on geometry is smooth, and amenable to describing the gauge theory all along the RG flow, including the deep IR, in terms of …

Ground-level ozone has a well established climate penalty associated with changing meteorological conditions under future climate change, but most existing research focuses exclusively on ozone-temperature relationships defined at specific locations. Using an extreme-value theory approach, we model relationships between temperature, humidity, and vapor pressure deficit and maximum daily 8 h ozone concentrations (MDA8) across California using a combination of ozone station network data and Community Multiscale Air Quality Modeling System (CMAQ) model output from 2008 to 2017. We study direct and indirect pseudomagnetoexcitons, formed by an electron and a hole in the layers of gapped graphene under strain‑induced gauge pseudomagnetic field. Since the train‑induced pseudomagnetic field acts on electrons and holes the same way, it occurs that the properties of single pseudomagnetoexcitons, their collective effects and phase diagram are cardinally different from those of magnetoexcitons in a real magnetic field. We have derived wave functions and energy spectrum of direct in a monolayer and indirect pseudomagnetoexcitons in a double layer of gapped graphene. This present study aims to determine the performance of using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model, coupled with the urban canopy models (UCMs), in simulating the 2 m air temperature and 2 m relative humidity in Metro Manila. The simulation was performed during a high heat event on 22–29 April 2018, which coincided with the dry season in the Philippines. The four urban canopy model options that were used in this study include, the bulk (no urban), SLUCM, BEP, and BEM. A modulated structure derived from the inverse Heusler phase (the XA-type and the disordered variant L21B-type) has been observed in rapidly quenched Mn2RuSn ribbons. The powder X-ray diffraction pattern of the quenched ribbons can be indexed as an L21B-type structure. Electron diffraction patterns of the new structure mostly resemble those of the XA-type (and the disordered variant L21B-type) structure and additional reflections with denser spacing indicate a long periodicity. Orthogonal domains of the modulated structure were revealed by a selected-area electron diffraction pattern and the corresponding dark-field transmission electron microscopy images. We have prepared the Heusler alloy CoFeV0.5Mn0.5Si in bulk form via arc melting. CoFeV0.5Mn0.5Si is ferromagnetic with a Curie temperature of 657 K. The longitudinal resistivity exhibits a minimum at 150 K, which is attributable to competition between quantum interference corrections at low temperatures and inelastic scattering at higher temperatures. The magnetoresistance (MR) is positive and nearly linear at low temperatures and becomes negative at temperatures close to room temperature. The positive MR in the quantum correction regime is evidence of the presence of the enhanced electron interaction as a contributor to …

Wetlands provide innumerous functions and values that are beneficial to both the natural environment and economic systems. Historically these habitats have suffered significant losses and it is crucial to preserve existing wetlands and plan for future restoration opportunities. This research examines six sub-watersheds within the Brandywine Creek watershed within Chester County, Pennsylvania to determine where potential wetland mitigation opportunities occur. Using a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analysis, three wetland characteristics including watercourse locations, existing National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) wetlands, and hydric soils were mapped throughout each of the watersheds. We develop a functorial approach to quotient constructions, defining morphisms quotient relative to a functor and the dual concept of unique liftings relative to a functor. Various classes of epimorphism are given detailed analysis and their relationship to quotient morphisms characterized. The behavior of unique lifting morphisms with respect to products, equalizers, and general limits in a category are studied. Applications to generalized covering space theory, coreflective subcategories of topological spaces, topological groups and rings, and Galois theory are explored. Finally, we give conditions for the product of two quotient morphisms to be quotient in a braided monoidal closed category.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is commonly characterized by a loss of cognitive function due to the deterioration of neuronal synapses from the presence of senile amyloid beta-42 (Aß42) plaques. Intrinsic susceptibility of deep learning to adversarial examples has led to a plethora of attack techniques with a common broad objective of fooling deep models. However, we find slight compositional differences between the algorithms achieving this objective. These differences leave traces that provide important clues for attacker profiling in real-life scenarios. Microcystins (MCs) are toxins produced by cyanobacteria commonly found in harmful algal blooms (HAB) occurring in many surface waters. Due to their toxicity to humans and other organisms, the World Health Organization (WHO) set a guideline of 1 µg/L for microcystin-leucine-arginine (MC-LR) in drinking water. In the first part of this Dissertation, hierarchies of Lagrangians of degree two, three or four, each only partly determined by the choice of leading terms and with some coefficients remaining free, are derived. These have significantly greater freedom than the most general differential geometric criterion currently known for the existence of a Lagrangian and variational formulation since our existence conditions are for individual coefficients in the Lagrangian. For different choices of leading coefficients, the resulting variational equations could also represent traveling waves of various nonlinear evolution equations. Space-time wave packets (STWP) constitute a broad class of pulsed optical fields that are rigidly transported in linear media without diffraction or dispersion, and are therefore propagation-invariant in absence of optical nonlinearities or waveguiding structures. Such wave packets exhibit unique characteristics, such as controllable group velocities in free space and exotic refractive phenomena. At the root of these behaviors is a fundamental feature underpinning STWP: their spectra are not separable with respect to the spatial and temporal degrees of freedom. Liquid crystal planar optics (LCPO) with versatile functionalities is emerging as a promising candidate for overcoming various challenges in near-eye displays, like augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), while maintaining a small form factor. This type of novel optical element exhibits unique properties, such as high efficiency, large angular/spectral bandwidths, polarization selectivity, and dynamic modulation. The basic molecular configuration of these novel reflective LCPO is analyzed, based on the simulation of molecular dynamics. Fire debris analysis is a forensic science discipline that determines if an ignitable liquid residue is present or absent in a fire debris sample. Currently, fire debris analysis results in categorical statements based on qualitative data, not the quantitative evidentiary value of data. This dissertation explores a new method for creating holographic phase masks (HPMs), which are phase transforming optical elements holographically recorded in photosensitive glass. This novel hologram recording method allows for the fast production of HPMs of any complexity, as opposed to the traditional multistep process, which includes the design and fabrication of a master phase mask operating in the UV region before the holographic recording step. NASA's Cassini mission to Saturn revolutionized modern understanding of the planet's vast and intricate ring system. We use stellar occultation data from Cassini's UVIS High Speed Photometer (HSP) to characterize the particle size distribution in the rings with two methods. First, we discern the sizes of the smallest particles at ring edges by forward-modeling observed diffraction signatures which appear as spikes in the signal, the shape and amplitude of which depends on the size and abundance of the smallest particles. The research presented in this dissertation describes the design and synthesis of substitutional-solid-solution-based multivariate metal-organic frameworks (SSS-based MTV MOFs) with functionalized organic linkers to study their emergent properties in the crystalline solid state. The motion of electrons in atoms, molecules, and in condensed matter unfolds on a time scale from the attosecond (1 as = 10-18 s) to several femtoseconds (1 fs= 10-15 s). The advent of attosecond light pulses has opened the way to the time-resolved study of electronic motion and of ionization processes using pump-probe spectroscopy. In this thesis, we examine three aspects of the ionization dynamics in poly-electronic atoms: i) the coherence of the emerging charged fragments, ii) two-photon ionization pathways, and iii) the reconstruction of photoionization amplitudes from experimental observable. Atmospheric retrieval is the inverse modeling method where atmospheric properties are constrained based on measured spectra. Due to the low signal-to-noise ratios of exoplanet observations, exoplanetary retrieval codes pair a radiative transfer (RT) simulator with a Bayesian statistical framework in order to characterize the distribution of atmospheric parameters that could explain the observations (the posterior distribution). This requires on the order of 106 RT model evaluations, which requires hours to days of compute time depending on model complexity. The UN COP26 2021 conference on climate change offers the chance for world leaders to take action and make urgent and meaningful commitments to reducing emissions and limit global temperatures to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels by 2050.
