Currently, there is a need for a cost-effective and more efficient option for gout diagnosis. Traditionally, gout is diagnosed by the presence of monosodium urate in blood or synovial fluid. The purpose of this research is to quantify the magneto-optical properties of monosodium urate crystals using a magneto-optical device (MOD). Characterization of these magnetic and optical properties is achieved through measuring the initial light intensity and the transmitted light intensity of a laser shone through a sample of monosodium urate with or without a static magnetic field. With the 3D technology available today creating something in a lab has never been easier. Using 3D printers, the body of a drone is created and printed using a combination of programs. With a body created using PLA filament the drone is durable and light weight. The drone’s flight system and controller are programmed with the built-in software from Arduino. Adding the Arduino nano to the drone body then gives the drone capabilities to fly.

The Northern Range of Trinidad is located in a key area for evaluating the Mesozoic-Cenozoic evolution of the Caribbean and South American plates. Here, we present detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology for 2391 grains from ten samples collected from metasedimentary rocks of the Northern Range. These data are used to bracket the maximum depositional age of the fossil-poor metasedimentary rocks from the Northern Range and to investigate the provenance of their sedimentary protoliths. Detrital zircon ages range between 3136.5 ± 22.9 Ma and 139.0 ± 5.4 Ma, reflecting apparent contribution from a variety of crustal affinities; however, since the youngest ages …

During its first few deployments, the mobile observatory has captured unique observations. Among them are vertical air motion measurements along the faces of the supertall One Vanderbilt skyscraper in Manhattan, NY which are shown to hold information critical to improving our understanding of the role of buildings in the ventilation of heat, pollution, and contaminants in urban street channels. Also, air temperature measurements collected during travel along a transect between Suffolk County and Manhattan, NY offer a high-resolution view of the urban heat island and reveal that temperature disparities also exist within the urban dome across different communities.

We determine reductions of 2 -dimensional, irreducible, semistable, and non-crystalline representations of Gal(ℚ𝑝/ℚ𝑝) with Hodge–Tate weights 0<𝑘−1 and with L -invariant whose p-adic norm is sufficiently large, depending on k. Our main result provides the first systematic examples of the reductions for 𝑘≥𝑝 .

Skill-based volunteering is an expanding branch of crowdsourcing where one may acquire sustainable services, solutions, and ideas from the crowd by connecting with them online. The optimal mapping between volunteers and tasks with collaboration becomes challenging for complex tasks demanding greater skills and cognitive ability. Unlike traditional crowdsourcing, volunteers like to work on their own schedule and locations. To address this problem, we propose a novel two-phase framework consisting of Initial Volunteer-Task Mapping (i-VTM) and Adaptive Common Slot Finding (a-CSF) algorithms. Cell communication via exosomes is capable of influencing cell fate in stress situations such as exposure to ionizing radiation. In vitro and in vivo studies have shown that exosomes might play a role in out-of-target radiation effects by carrying molecular signaling mediators of radiation damage, as well as opposite protective functions resulting in resistance to radiotherapy. However, a global understanding of exosomes and their radiation-induced regulation, especially within the context of an intact mammalian organism, has been lacking. The Center for Environmental Research and Coastal Oceans Monitoring (CERCOM) visits 11 locations in the Great South Bay from Memorial Day – Labor Day to monitor dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, salinity, clarity and temperature. Students are trained to assist in CERCOM’s water quality data collection by research assistant Mr. Kyle Maurelli. This monitoring program has been conducted for the past 17 years. The recently proposed generalized covering radius is a fundamental property of error correcting codes. This quantity characterizes the trade off between time and space complexity of certain algorithms when a code is used in them. However, for the most part very little is known about the generalized covering radius. My thesis seeks to expand on this field in several ways. First, a new upper bound on this quantity is established and compared to previous bounds. The Jaya algorithm and its variants have enjoyed great success in diverse application areas, but no theoretical analysis of the algorithm, to our knowledge, is available in the literature. In this paper we build stochastic models for analyzing Jaya and semi-steady-state Jaya algorithms. For these algorithms, the computational cost depends on how, at each iteration, the new individual fares against the existing individual. Costs must be incurred for any replacement of individuals and the subsequent update of the population-worst individual’s (and/or the population-best individual’s) index. A graph G is chromatically unique if its chromatic polynomial completely determines the graph. An n-spoked wheel, Wn, is shown to be chromatically unique when n ≥ 4 is even [S.-J. Xu and N.-Z. Li, The chromaticity of wheels, Discrete Math. 51 (1984) 207–212]. When n is odd, this problem is still open for n ≥ 15 since 1984, although it was shown by di erent researchers that the answer is no for n = 5, 7, yes for n = 3, 9, 11, 13, and unknown for other odd n. Methylmercury (MeHg) is a neurotoxin that bioaccumulates to potentially harmful concentrations in Arctic marine wildlife and in those that consume them. Monitoring and modeling MeHg bioaccumulation and biogeochemical cycling in the ocean requires understanding of the mechanisms behind net mercury (Hg) methylation. The key functional gene for Hg methylation, hgcAB, is widely distributed throughout ocean basins and spans multiple microbial phyla. While multiple microbially-mediated anaerobic pathways for Hg methylation are known, in the ocean, the majority of hgcA homologs have been found in oxic subsurface waters, in contrast to other ecosystems. Task success in co-located and distributed collaborative work settings is characterized by clear and efficient communication between participating members. Communication issues like 1) Unwanted interruptions and 2) Delayed feedback in collaborative work based distributed scenarios have the potential to impede task coordination and significantly decrease the probability of accomplishing task objective. Low-cost PM sensors have garnered interest for their ability to reduce the cost of investigating PM concentrations in both indoor and outdoor spaces. They perform well in high concentration lab testing with correlation coefficients greater than 0.9. In real-world applications, the correlation coefficients drop significantly because of sensing floors and adverse ambient conditions. There are plenty of supervised machine learning techniques that aim to correct the measurements ranging from linear regression to more advanced neural networks and random forests. Our visual awareness relies on light acting on the eye to perceive materiality and colour. Medieval thought wrestled to articulate and comprehend its nature. The notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci, for example, included his descriptions to define light and make comparisons so as to differentiate between light and shadow. His focus was on the illumination of surfaces from the perspective of a painter, seeing shadows as ‘the diminution of light by the intervention of an opaque body’ and ‘the counterpart of luminous rays’. This article examines the basis of Natural Language Understanding of transformer based language models, such as BERT. It does this through a case study on idiom token classification. We use idiom token identification as a basis for our analysis because of the variety of information types that have previously been explored in the literature for this task, including: topic, lexical, and syntactic features. This variety of relevant information types means that the task of idiom token identification enables us to explore the forms of linguistic information that a BERT language model captures and encodes in its representations. To date, literature on the Risk-Knowledge Infinity Cycle (RKI Cycle) has mainly been theoretical. This paper series intent is to focus on the operationalisation of the RKI Cycle by describing a series of steps – the “How to” – for RKI Cycle deployment, to help move the RKI Cycle from theory to practice. The third paper in this series focuses on ensuring the best available knowledge flows into QRM through a case study demonstrating knowledge mapping to support effective quality risk assessment during commissioning and qualification activities.

A peer-mentoring network, funded by the National Science Foundation ADVANCE program, profoundly impacted the career trajectory of five women chemistry faculty at predominantly undergraduate institutions. By providing each other support, encouragement, information, and accountability, we advanced our careers, became leaders in our own right, and implemented change at our institutions. To extend this benefit to more women STEM faculty, we have developed and implemented a model to support 74 faculty and administrators representing 51 institutions across the country.

Avidin is a homotetrameric protein known for its high binding affinity and specificity for biotin which gives it great functionality in many biotech applications. Prior research on the bacterial analog, streptavidin found cooperative allosterism exhibited in the binding process. U/Pb radiometric dating of zircon is one of the most widely used methods to determine the crystallization ages of igneous and metamorphic rocks and the provenance of sedimentary rocks. Eastern Washington University (EWU) has collaborated with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to build a mineral separation lab for isolating zircon (and other) minerals for analysis. This lab was completed in Fall 2022 and is currently being transferred to the new ISC for future use. People don’t normally associate semi-precious gems with basalt or the “boring black rock” that dominates the Eastern Washington landscape. However, a site just northeast of Cheney in the West Planes of Spokane, shows where a system of gem-filled veins can be found nestled into the 16-million-year-old (Kasbohm and Schoene, 2018) Priest Rapids Member of the Wanapum Basalt that is a part of the greater Columbia River Basalt. The volcanic rocks are the host to millimeter - 10 cm wide fractures with variable colored agate and opal.

Folded and altered quartzite along Interstate 90 and the Palouse to Cascades Trail out of Rosalia, WA preserves a record of the region’s tectonic past. The working hypothesis is that the sandstone is Cambrian (roughly 500 million years old) and was metamorphosed and deformed during the Sevier orogeny (roughly 150 to 50 million years ago), and then uplifted about 50 million years ago. The first step to address the hypothesis is to determine the age of the rocks using detrital zircon U/Pb analyses. The article traces an EnviroLab Asia research trip designed to learn how “traditional” music and “folk” dance had been used to transform a loose configuration of farms into an integrated organic agricultural cooperative. This trip was second part of a multi-pronged case-study project looking at music, agriculture and sustainability in Indonesia and China. The importance of this research trip was to build collaborative relationships with our colleagues in Shanxi so that we will be able to produce interdisciplinary research with multinational partners in the future.

The primary objective of this study is to understand how soil moisture is depleted underneath native and non-native Minnesotan tree species following a rain event. It is hypothesized that soil moisture will deplete more significantly and faster underneath drought intolerant, shallow rooted species native to Minnesota. This study also focuses on utilizing remote sensing techniques to calculate the soil moisture availability across a floodplain forest using Landsat 8 images to compare satellite-derived and field-recorded soil moisture values to assess the potential of these images to remotely estimate soil moisture in floodplains.
