Weighted Estimates For The Bergman And Szegö Projections, Nathan Andrew Wagner May 2022

Weighted Estimates For The Bergman And Szegö Projections, Nathan Andrew Wagner

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a study of various weighted estimates for the Bergman and Szegö projections on domains in several complex variables. The starting point of our analysis is a bounded, pseudoconvex domain D ⊂ Cn. The Bergman and Szegö projections are both orthogonal projections onto spaces of holomorphic functions associated with D. While it is immediate that both of these operators are bounded on L2, it has been a topic of substantial interest to determine their mapping properties on Lp, where the boundary geometry of D plays amajor role. Given a linear operator T acting on measurable functions that is …

Signaling Studies Of Protein-Peptide Binding On Microelectrode Arrays, Kendra White May 2022

Signaling Studies Of Protein-Peptide Binding On Microelectrode Arrays, Kendra White

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Electrochemical methods provide unique opportunities for non-traditional synthesis and analytical studies. Using electrochemistry, we are able to synthesize individually addressable molecular surfaces on microelectrode arrays and then utilize the surface to probe interactions between receptors and their biological targets. To date, cyclic voltammetry signals can be used to detect biological interactions between proteins and small molecules on the surface of an array, however those signals are often amplified by the presence of a large number of small molecules by any given electrode. This amplification makes it difficult to obtain binding data using the arrays that can be compared with existing …

Low-Temperature Plasticity Of Rock-Forming Minerals, Michael Keith Sly May 2022

Low-Temperature Plasticity Of Rock-Forming Minerals, Michael Keith Sly

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The rheology of the Earth’s crust and mantle is in part governed by the physical and mechanical properties of feldspar, quartz, calcite, and olivine. Over the past several decades a significant number of experimental studies have been performed on these minerals. Conventional experiments are generally performed at elevated temperatures because much of the viscoplastic deformation of these minerals is accommodated by high-temperature mechanisms. There is, however, evidence of viscoplastic deformation at lower temperatures (T ≤ 0.3Tm) in the uppermost mantle and throughout the crust. Micromechanical experimental techniques, including nanoindentation and micropillar deformation, can be used to achieve plastic deformation at …

Contribution To Data Science: Time Series, Uncertainty Quantification And Applications, Dhrubajyoti Ghosh

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Time series analysis is an essential tool in modern world statistical analysis, with a myriad of real data problems having temporal components that need to be studied to gain a better understanding of the temporal dependence structure in the data. For example, in the stock market, it is of significant importance to identify the ups and downs of the stock prices, for which time series analysis is crucial. Most of the existing literature on time series deals with linear time series, or with Gaussianity assumption. However, there are multiple instances where the time series shows nonlinear trends, or when the …

The Effect Of Surface Gas/Liquid Entrapment On Drag Reduction, Haosen Tan May 2022

The Effect Of Surface Gas/Liquid Entrapment On Drag Reduction, Haosen Tan

Mechanical Engineering Research Theses and Dissertations

Economic globalization has made today’s world more closely linked, where transportation (e.g. shipping, pipeline) has played an important role. Approximately over 60% (in air), 80% (underwater), and 100% (in pipeline) propulsive power is used to overcome surface drag, so reducing surface drag will have a substantial impact economically and environmentally.

To develop a surface that has lower drag, the intuitive idea is to convert no-slip boundary conditions to slip or partial slip ones. To achieve that, the most promising approach is to replace the solid-liquid boundaries completely or partially with gas-liquid or liquid-liquid boundaries, because the shear stress is much …

Steps Toward The Total Synthesis Of The Chrysosporazine Family, Katie Kaczynski May 2022

Steps Toward The Total Synthesis Of The Chrysosporazine Family, Katie Kaczynski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with 19.3 million new cancer cases and 10 million deaths in 2020 alone. In the United States, cancer was the second leading cause of death after heart disease. One of the reasons that cancer is so frequently terminal is that cancerous cells frequently develop multidrug resistance (MDR) to frontline chemotherapeutical treatments, resulting in cancers cannot be treated and are inevitably fatal. This makes the discovery of ways to combat MDR so important in the treatment of cancer. The chrysosporazines are a family of recently discovered (2019) natural products that have …

Nutrient Restoration Of A Large, Impounded, Ultra-Oligotrophic Western River To Recover Declining Native Fishes, Ryan S. Hardy, Tyler J. Ross, Kevin N. Mcdonnell, Michael C. Quist, Charlie Holderman, Bryan S. Stevens

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Declines in many fish populations in large, western rivers have been primarily attributed to the anthropogenic reduction of nutrient inputs and subsequent impacts to the food web. The largest known river fertilization program was implemented starting in 2005 on the Kootenai River in northern Idaho to restore resident fisheries. Annual electrofishing surveys were conducted at multiple sites in Idaho and Montana before and during nutrient addition to evaluate assemblage and population-level responses. Although few responses in fish assemblage structure were observed, the addition of liquid ammonium polyphosphate fertilizer (3 μg/L) to the Kootenai River increased fish abundance and biomass over …

To better understand volcanoes and their processes is important from both a fundamental science perspective and for hazard monitoring purposes. The complexity and limitations we face in pursuing such a science are numerous and this dissertation explores how an interdisciplinary approach combining physics, computer science, and volcanology can address this complexity in a straightforward and meaningful way. This is achieved through various modelling techniques across three studies: (1) a first-order analytic modelling of stratovolcano topographic shape, (2) the use of a Bayesian joint inversion on gravity and novel cosmic-ray muon measurements for imaging flat-lying subsurface density anomalies, and (3) the …

Nonequilibrium And Nonlinear Dynamics In Collective Spin Models And Implementations Using Quantum Feedback Control, Manuel H. Munoz Arias May 2022

Nonequilibrium And Nonlinear Dynamics In Collective Spin Models And Implementations Using Quantum Feedback Control, Manuel H. Munoz Arias

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Out-of-equilibrium dynamics generalizes the study of ground states of quantum Hamiltonians at zero temperature, to that of dynamical quasi-steady states of quantum systems far from equilibrium. In this dissertation I discuss dynamical quantum phase transitions and out-of-equilibrium phases of matter in models of collective spins with multi-body interactions. These models, based on collective degrees of freedom, allow an exact description of the thermodynamic limit via the mean-field description. In this limit, the nonequilibrium dynamics of properties of quantum states is mapped to the nonlinear dynamics of classical variables, and thus it can be analyzed using tools from the theory of …

Examination Of Ionization In Cesium Diode Pumped Alkali Lasers With An Ion Chamber Diagnostic, Benjamin Oliker May 2022

Examination Of Ionization In Cesium Diode Pumped Alkali Lasers With An Ion Chamber Diagnostic, Benjamin Oliker

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

Diode pumped alkali lasers (DPALs) are leading candidates for future high power applications, with many potential utilities for the military, aerospace, communications, and scientific diagnostics. A critical step in their development is measurement and understanding of unwanted ionization processes that occur inside the laser, which decrease efficiency, reduce the usable alkali population, and increase heat load. In this dissertation, direct measurement of the ionization rate of a cesium DPAL gain medium are made for the first time, via application of an ion chamber diagnostic. Results will demonstrate that the rate of ionization is slow compared to pump absorption, with a …

Political Corruption And Corporate Risk-Taking, Hinh Khieu, Nam H. Nguyen, Hieu V. Phan, Jon A. Fulkerson May 2022

Political Corruption And Corporate Risk-Taking, Hinh Khieu, Nam H. Nguyen, Hieu V. Phan, Jon A. Fulkerson

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We use variation in corruption convictions across judicial districts in the US to examine the relationship between political corruption and risk-taking of public firms. Firms headquartered in regions with high levels of political corruption have lower total risk and lower idiosyncratic risk on average. Further analysis shows that corruption tends to encourage firms to pursue risk-decreasing investments, lower the riskiness of their operations, and decrease asset liquidity. While managerial ownership is intended to align the interests of managers and shareholders, the presence of corruption appears to encourage undiversified managers to decrease risk-taking. Our evidence is consistent with agency theory and …

On Two-Player Pebbling, Garth Isaak, Matthew Prudente, Andrea Potylycki, William Fagley, Joseph Marcinik May 2022

On Two-Player Pebbling, Garth Isaak, Matthew Prudente, Andrea Potylycki, William Fagley, Joseph Marcinik

Communications on Number Theory and Combinatorial Theory

Graph pebbling can be extended to a two-player game on a graph G, called Two-Player Graph Pebbling, with players Mover and Defender. The players each use pebbling moves, the act of removing two pebbles from one vertex and placing one of the pebbles on an adjacent vertex, to win. Mover wins if they can place a pebble on a specified vertex. Defender wins if the specified vertex is pebble-free and there are no more pebbling moves on the vertices of G. The Two-Player Pebbling Number of a graph G, η(G), is the minimum m such that for every arrangement …

Relational Graph Convolutional Networks For Predicting Blood-Brain Barrier Penetration Of Drug Molecules, Yan Ding, Xiaoqian Jiang, Yejin Kim

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

MOTIVATION: Evaluating the blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability of drug molecules is a critical step in brain drug development. Traditional methods for the evaluation require complicated in vitro or in vivo testing. Alternatively, in silico predictions based on machine learning have proved to be a cost-efficient way to complement the in vitro and in vivo methods. However, the performance of the established models has been limited by their incapability of dealing with the interactions between drugs and proteins, which play an important role in the mechanism behind the BBB penetrating behaviors. To address this limitation, we employed the relational graph convolutional …

An Evidence-Based Lexical Pattern Approach For Quality Assurance Of Gene Ontology Relations, Rashmie Abeysinghe, Yuntao Yang, Mason Bartels, W Jim Zheng, Licong Cui May 2022

An Evidence-Based Lexical Pattern Approach For Quality Assurance Of Gene Ontology Relations, Rashmie Abeysinghe, Yuntao Yang, Mason Bartels, W Jim Zheng, Licong Cui

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Gene Ontology (GO) is widely used in the biological domain. It is the most comprehensive ontology providing formal representation of gene functions (GO concepts) and relations between them. However, unintentional quality defects (e.g. missing or erroneous relations) in GO may exist due to the large size of GO concepts and complexity of GO structures. Such quality defects would impact the results of GO-based analyses and applications. In this work, we introduce a novel evidence-based lexical pattern approach for quality assurance of GO relations. We leverage two layers of evidence to suggest potentially missing relations in GO as follows. We first …
