Pertechnetate (TcO₄⁻) is a persistent radioactive byproduct resulting from the decay of uranium-235 or plutonium-239 in the nuclear fuel cycle. Its high environmental mobility, long half-life, and significant beta radiation make TcO₄⁻ a critical contaminant. Structurally tetrahedral and water-soluble, TcO₄⁻ behaves similarly to the sulfate anion, facilitating its rapid introduction into ecosystems.
It bioaccumulates in lower-level organisms, propagating radioactive and toxic effects through food chains. In mammals, technetium-99 accumulates in the thyroid and may also impact fetal development. Its small charge, chemical stability, and solubility present significant challenges for effective remediation.

Hurricanes are hazardous and costly events that annually negatively impact people that live in coastal areas in North America. The current observational record of hurricanes is short (1970- present) and does not offer insight into the effects of climate change on hurricane frequency. One method of improving and extending our observational record of hurricanes is to reconstruct paleohurricanes using sediment cores. These cores record hurricane activity in the form of coarse-grained overwash layers that are deposited when hurricanes move sand from beaches into backbarrier ponds. This study measures whether microbial communities in the shallow coastal waters of Virginia Beach are capable of consuming methane in the water column. Using methane enrichment incubations and gas chromatography, we found no measurable methane oxidation of our samples over multi-day periods. These results suggest that these coastal waters may act as net sources of atmospheric methane.

Brownification is when water bodies turn brown over time. It occurs due to high amounts of color-dissolved organic matter (CDOM). CDOM is organic material, such as decaying leaves and organisms, that leaches into the water column like tea. It absorbs ultraviolet and blue light more than red light, causing the water to appear brown. After comparing surveys from 1987 and 2018, scientists discovered the Adirondack lakes underwent brownification as they recovered from acid rain. Objectives and Methods The YQ mining area in the Qinshui Basin is characterized by complex seismic and geological conditions, as well as well-developed collapse columns and flexure structures. Consequently, conventional three-dimensional (3D) seismic exploration fails to meet the precision requirements for safe coal mining. First-Order Axial Perturbation Of The Reissner–Nordström Metric Against A Possible Parity-Violating Gravity Background, Abhishek Rout, Brett David Altschul

We study axial perturbations of Reissner–Nordström black holes within the general frame-work of parity-violating modified gravity theories. We derive the governing equations for a class of frame-dragging perturbations, focusing on the symmetry structure and radial dependence of the perturbed metric component, describing its behavior across three distinct regions: near the singularity (r → 0), between the inner and outer Reissner–Nordström horizons (r− < r < r+), and in the asymptotic exterior regime (r → ∞). Using a combination of analytical and numerical methods, we analyze the solutions for varying black hole charge-to-mass ratios (Q/M) and angular momentum parameters (l). Key findings include the suppression of perturbations by the electromagnetic field for higher Q/M; the emergence of radial resonance-like behavior for specific l values; and a high degree of symmetry for solutions in the extremal limit (Q/M ∼ 1), attributed to the AdS2 × S 2 near-horizon geometry. The WKB approximation is employed to study the high-l regime, revealing quantized radial resonance modes and singular behavior in the extremal limit. Additionally, we explore the role of boundary conditions and the possibility of a Chern–Simons field Θ as the source of the parity violation, showing that consistency and the behavior of the perturbations under time reversal demand a constant field (and thus no actually observable Chern–Simons effects) at leading order. These results provide a basis for further analysis of the stability and dynamical properties of charged black holes in parity-violating theories, with potential experimental signatures in gravitational wave observations.

Next-generation mass spectrometry platforms (Orbitrap Astral, timsTOF Ultra) are reshaping proteomics by enhancing analytical depth and sensitivity. We compared these platforms against Orbitrap Exploris 480 using neonatal mouse lung tissues from a bronchopulmonary dysplasia model (n = 12), employing four acquisition strategies: Exploris 480 DDA/DIA, Astral HR-DIA, and timsTOF Ultra DIA-PASEF. All platforms identified ∼4000 proteins in common, with 98% proteome coverage of data-dependent acquisition (DDA) identifications using data-independent (DIA) methods and 92% concordance between next-generation systems. Orbitrap Astral and timsTOF Ultra quantified >225,000 peptides and 13,000 proteins, representing ∼800% and ∼300% greater depth than Exploris 480 DDA, respectively. …

Objective Coals with varying metamorphic grades differ significantly in the potential for methane generation through microbial degradation. Medium- to high-rank coals can generate a substantial volume of methane through microbial degradation. However, key factors governing their biogasification potential remain poorly understood. Objective Large-scale, effective helium source rocks serve as a material basis for the formation of a helium-rich gas field. In the Weiyuan area, Sichuan Basin, the helium-rich gas reservoirs within the Dengying Formation exhibit helium source rocks consisting of the pre-Sinian basement granites and the shales of the Cambrian Qiongzhusi Formation.
