Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective The overlimit gas bursting in the drilling process of outburst coal seam is a safety hazard that threatens the efficient production of the mine. The layered cutting drilling method helps to weaken the burst gas pressure in the borehole, but the characteristics of gas release around the trapezoidal borehole formed by layered cutting are unknown, which limits the structural design and application effect of the layered cutting drilling tool. Methods Herein, study was conducted based on the layered cutting boreholes with different layer spacing and layer thickness difference. Specifically, a mathematical model was established to analyze the gas flow …

Technology For Efficient Production Of Deep Coalbed Methane In The Shenfu Block, Li Bin, Yang Fan, Zhang Hongjie, Feng Lei, An Qi, Hao Zhaobing
Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective Deep coalbed methane (CBM), representing one crucial resource successor for ensuring the oil and gas security of China and achieving peak carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality of the country, exhibits broad prospects for production. However, due to the small low universality of CBM production technologies under varying geological conditions, a technology that has been successfully applied in some blocks cannot be directly extended to other blocks. This leads to blind deployment of well types and well patterns in the early-stage exploration and development of new blocks to a certain extent. Given this, it is necessary to develop a …

Production Characteristics Of Deep Coalbed Methane Wells In The Linxing Block And Associated Their Influencing Factors, Wang Zhizhuang, Wu Peng, Sun Qiang, Liu Rui, Wang Lingbo
Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective The production characteristics of deep coalbed methane (CBM) are significantly distinguished from those of middle-shallow CBM, and even the production wells of deep CBM within the same block exhibit different characteristics. Given that relevant research remains in its exploratory stage, gaining a deeper understanding of the factors influencing the differences in production characteristics of deep CBM is significant for the production capacity prediction and production management of the subsequent large-scale production stage. Methods To determine the production characteristics of deep CBM in the Linxing block and their influencing factors, this study examined geological engineering factors including gas content, coal …

Optimization Of Schemes For Multi-Reservoir Commingled Fracturing Of Coal Measures In The Linxing Block, Wang Bo, Zhang Bing, Mi Honggang, Du Jia, Duan Jiajia, Cui Shuhui, Zhang Haozhe, Fu Tianyu
Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective The coal-bearing strata in the Linxing block on the eastern margin of the Ordos Basin exhibit the alternating occurrence of multiple sequences and vertical thin layers (interlayers). Therefore, multi-reservoir commingled fracturing is essential for the cost-effective, efficient exploitation of coal-measure gas from these coal-bearing strata. The key to successful multi-reservoir commingled fracturing is the achievement of expected fracture heights. The current challenges include the unclear vertically extended distance and morphologies of fractures, along with great deviations between the predicted and actual fracture heights, significantly affecting the volume of reservoirs for production growth. Methods Based on the in-situ stresses on …

A Cylindrical Permeation And Diffusion Model For Bingham Grout In Water-Rich Sand Layers And Its Experimental Research, Wang Xuesong, Cheng Hua, Yao Zhishu, Rong Chuanxin, Xie Bao
Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective The disaster prevention and control for water-rich sand layers pose a major challenge to the safe construction of tunnels and deep foundation pits. Typically, the impermeability and bearing capacity of highly water-rich and weakly cemented sand layers are enhanced through permeation grouting via sleeve valve tubes, with resulting grouting concretions being approximately cylindrical. Methods To explore the cylindrical diffusion mechanism of permeation grouting in sand layers, this study constructed a cylindrical diffusion model of radial tube flow for the permeation grouting of Bingham grout in sand layers while considering the tortuosity effects. Subsequently, this study developed a set of …

A Non-Uniform Interpolation Method For Seismic Data Based On A Diffusion Probabilistic Model, Chen Yao, Yu Siwei, Lin Rongzhi
Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective The non-uniform interpolation of seismic data is identified as a prolonged challenge in energy exploration. Since geophones cannot be precisely placed at positions corresponding to theoretical grid points, current uniform interpolation techniques frequently suffer deviations and detail distortion. Methods This study proposed a novel non-uniform interpolation method based on a diffusion probabilistic model, which is an emerging generative model in deep learning that involves the diffusion and generation processes. In the diffusion process, noise is added to the complete seismic data iteratively to train the denoising capability of the neural network. In the generation process, the neural network is …

This work describes the development of matrix-free GPU-accelerated solvers for high-order finite element problems in . The solvers are applicable to grad-div and Darcy problems in saddle-point formulation, and have applications in radiation diffusion and porous media flow problems, among others. Using the interpolation–histopolation basis (cf. [W. Pazner, T. Kolev, and C. R. Dohrmann, SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 45 (2023), pp. A675–A702]), efficient matrix-free preconditioners can be constructed for the -block and Schur complement of the block system. With these approximations, block-preconditioned MINRES converges in a number of iterations that is independent of the mesh size and polynomial degree. The …

Seismic Data Denoising Based On The Convolutional Neural Network With An Attention Mechanism In The Curvelet Domain, Bao Qianzong, Zhou Mei, Qiu Yi
Coal Geology & Exploration
[Objective] Noise in seismic data significantly affects the accurate interpretation of subsurface stratigraphic information. Given that effective signals with pronounced lateral correlations in seismic data are distributed in specific coefficients but random noise typically spreads uniformly over all coefficients in the curvelet domain, more effective separation of signals can be achieved. [Methods] The convolutional neural network based on the attention mechanism can adaptively extract key information by focusing on important features of images. Hence, this study proposed a noise attenuation method for seismic data using a convolutional neural network based on the curvelet transform and attention mechanism (Curvelet-AU-Net). First, the …

Submerged aquatic vegetation, referring to benthic macroalgae and plants that obligately grow underwater, are critical components of marine ecosystems and are frequently found to provide preferential recruitment habitats. The mapping and monitoring of aquatic vegetation through remote sensing and machine learning is becoming an important aspect of managing coastal environments at scale. Accurate mapping and monitoring require robust sampling and occurrence data to assess predictive error and quantify submerged vegetation extents. The form of ground truthing survey design (preferential, random, grid-based or spatially balanced) could significantly influence predictive model outcomes and the overall accuracy of mapping and monitoring. Here, we …

The Characterization And Electrochemistry Of Natural Uranium Dioxide Under Long-Term Disposal Conditions, Martin D. M. Badley
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis describes the studies performed on a number of natural uranium dioxide (UO2) specimens to determine a range of reactivities. This work will support the safety case for the long-term disposal of spent nuclear fuel in Canada. Under relevant long-term disposal conditions, water radiolysis could produce oxidizing conditions at the surface of the fuel, potentially leading to fuel corrosion and the release of radionuclides into the groundwater. The rate of such a process would be determined by the radiation dose rate from the fuel and the reactivity of the fuel, which will be determined by its composition, …

Competition Effects In An Intraguild Predation Model, Nicholas A. Eekhof
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
In the biological world, many interactions exist between various species. These interactions generally consist of predator-prey relationships, competition between species and beneficial relationships. One observed phenomenon, termed the fear effect, occurs when one species reacts to an increased risk of predation by another species. The fear response causes the affected species to reproduce and forage for food less. In some cases, the fear response can be beneficial, while in other times it can be harmful. In this thesis, we consider a four compartment food-chain model in which there exists a top-level predator, a mesopredator and two types of prey who …

Host-Pathogen Co-Evolution With Various Transmission Modes Of Infection And Density-Dependent Dynamics, Bita Ghodsi
Host-Pathogen Co-Evolution With Various Transmission Modes Of Infection And Density-Dependent Dynamics, Bita Ghodsi
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Pathogens can be transmitted both vertically (from the parent to the offspring) and horizontally. Here, I model the co-evolution of pathogens and their hosts allowing for vertical and horizontal transmission and density-dependent host population growth. My analysis uses evolutionary game theory. I use computational methods to find that increasing vertical transmission does not always result in more benign disease outcomes. Instead, it can lead to higher pathogen-induced mortality. Furthermore, more benign outcomes evolve more readily when horizontal transmission is more profitable for the pathogen, and overall virulence increases as horizontal transmission becomes more profitable. The results also indicate that vertical …

Understanding Protein Deep Learning Models Through Explainability, Zahra Fazel
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis investigates the application of Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) techniques to deep learning models in the field of protein analysis, specifically targeting protein language models and protein interaction site prediction models. Despite the increasing adoption of these sophisticated deep learning models in bioinformatics, their intrinsic complexity often results in a black-box nature, obscuring the understanding of their decision-making processes.
This research represents a thorough effort to integrate explanation methods within this context. We analyze the resulting interpretations using biological-specific statistical tests to enhance the transparency and interpretability of the models. This work evaluates the efficacy of current XAI methods …
Quantum Field Theory And The Limits Of Reductionism, Emily Adlam
Quantum Field Theory And The Limits Of Reductionism, Emily Adlam
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
I suggest that the current situation in quantum field theory (QFT) provides some reason to question the universal validity of ontological reductionism. I argue that the renormalization group flow is reversible except at fixed points, which makes the relation between large and small distance scales quite symmetric in QFT, opening up at least the technical possibility of a non-reductionist approach to QFT. I suggest that some conceptual problems encountered within QFT may potentially be mitigated by moving to an alternative picture in which it is no longer the case that the large supervenes on the small. Finally, I explore some …
