This project investigates determinants and matrix invertibility in finite modular systems, focusing on matrices over Zn. Using the Hill cipher as context, it examines the algebraic conditions under which a matrix is invertible in modular arithmetic. In particular, the project studies how the determinant determines invertibility, showing that a matrix over Zn is invertible if and only if its determinant is coprime with n. The project further compares invertibility over the real numbers with invertibility over modular systems, highlighting the distinction between prime moduli Zp and composite moduli. As generative AI tools like ChatGPT become more common in higher education, writing instructors face the challenge of guiding students toward effective and ethical use, particularly in asynchronous environments where immediate feedback is limited. This presentation reports on an exploratory study that addresses this challenge by shifting attention from AI’s outputs to students’ moment-by-moment writing processes. Grounded in applied linguistics approaches to writing research and process-tracing methods, the project employed case studies with both expert and novice users of GenAI. The growing population of orbital debris, including a significant amount of debris ranging from 1 to 10 cm, has substantially increased the risk to satellites. Due to the sheer number and high velocities, debris ranging from 1 to 10 cm still has the ability to cause mission-ending damage while remaining undetectable by ground-based detection facilities. This study utilizes the NASA Standard Satellite Breakup Model (NASA SSBM), combined with MATLAB, to propagate debris clouds over extended durations, enabling the identification of high-detection zones and debris rings. We propose a numerical method for solving and modeling thermo-poroelasticity problems using a finite element formulation. Thermo-poroelasticity models describe the coupled interaction between mechanical deformation, fluid flow, and heat transfer in specific materials or environments over time. These models demonstrate the evolution of displacement, pressure, and temperature; we compute these fields in this work using backward Euler time discretization and Enriched Galerkin finite element spatial discretization. For these computations we used FreeFEM, a partial differential equation solver that uses the finite element method, which produced our numerical results. Numerical Methods for Nonlinear Problems Using the Finite Element Method is a computational mathematics capstone that builds and tests finite element method (FEM) workflows for nonlinear partial differential equations in FreeFEM++, with ParaView used for visualization. Two nonlinear model problems are used to demonstrate the approach. The first is a semilinear reaction-diffusion equation with a cubic nonlinearity. A manufactured solution is used so accuracy can be checked at a fixed final time, and refinement studies in both time step and mesh size are run while nonlinear iteration counts are tracked to show solver effort. We investigate how the internal structure of the Sun would change if dark matter particles were present at densities predicted by Galactic halo models. Dark matter capture rates were computed using the Python code Asteria, which implements the multi-element capture formalism of Gould (1987) to determine the rate at which dark matter particles scatter and become gravitationally bound inside the Sun. Because Asteria calculates only the capture rate, we developed a post-processing Python-based analysis to estimate the resulting physical effects using analytic scaling relations from previous solar dark matter studies. This project focuses on measuring the Lyman continuum photon luminosity (Lc) of diffuse H II regions using multi-line observations from the Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper (WHAM). Previous work by Sahan & Haffner (2016) analyzed the λ Ori region in Hα, [S II], and [N II], which I build on by refining assumptions about distance, extinction, and background emission, as well as extending the analysis to additional regions such as Perseus. Uncovering the root causes of aviation accidents is a critical component of improving aviation safety. Traditional approaches are largely reactive, relying on post-incident analysis rather than proactively identifying risk factors. This project addresses the need for proactive safety by using a multi-source dataset that integrates aviation accident records, weather conditions, and maintenance data extracted from investigative reports. Secure communication for space-based systems requires cryptographic methods that remain both reliable and efficient under strict computational constraints. This work investigates a low-complexity polynomial ring learning algorithm designed for quantum space assets, including satellite–ground communication systems. The project focuses on post-quantum cryptographic principles, where encryption and decryption rely heavily on repeated polynomial operations; this can be computationally expensive with constrained platforms. This is addressed with reformulating polynomial multiplication as a structured linear transformation on coefficient vectors. High-quality parabolic mirrors, which are vital components in reflecting telescopes, are typically bulky, costly, and highly fragile. This experiment explores the feasibility of using specular Class B Mylar as an unconventional, lightweight, and cost-effective alternative. This approach could enable new telescope designs by greatly reducing weight and manufacturing expenses, while also opening options for potential adaptability. This approach involves using Mylar, a flexible, reflective style of plastic. Study of Atmospheric Effects and Mitigation Strategies in Free-Space Optical Communication Systems examines the fundamental limitations imposed by atmospheric disturbances on point-to-point laser communication links and evaluates methods to improve link reliability and performance. Free-space optical communication offers high data rates and reduced spectral congestion compared to radiofrequency systems, but its effectiveness is constrained by atmospheric effects including turbulence-induced scintillation, beam wander, absorption, and scattering. Radio JOVE, a NASA-supported citizen science project, provides a framework for studying planetary magnetospheres and solar activity through radio observations. The primary goal of this project is to construct a Radio JOVE telescope system to enable undergraduate observation and analysis of low-frequency radio emissions from Jupiter and the Sun. Emerging coastalization and urbanization threats to the prehistoric Concón Dunes and Humedal de Mantagua coastal area of Chile is being investigated by researchers via uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) in "Contrasting Coastal Dune Environments in Chile." Four UAS were utilized: Anzu Raptor T, DJI Mavic 3E, DJI Mavic 3M, and DJI Air 3 to collect various images of the coastal dunes. Stellar age estimations derived from asteroseismology depend on stellar models that are sensitive to metallicity (Z). Variations in this parameter could alter the agreement between gyrochronological and asteroseismic ages, as well as main sequence lifetimes and observational properties such as effective temperature and luminosity. We test how much typical metallicity differences (±0.2 dex) affect main-sequence models of solar-type stars. Using MESA, evolutionary tracks are created for 1 M☉ stars at three metallicities (Z = 0.009, 0.014, 0.022), and it is measured how these changes shift the positions of the zero-age main sequence and the corresponding main sequence lifetimes. With the exponential growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI), user interface (UI) designers have explored using AI to shorten design time. This study assessed the effectiveness of UIs designed with AI programs versus manual methods for an Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV) control system. The Schrödinger equation is the foundational equation of non-relativistic quantum mechanics. The hydrogen atom is the simplest system for solving this equation, as it consists of only one proton and one electron. In this project, we work on the Schrödinger equation that models the spherically symmetric states of the hydrogen atom that depend only on the radial coordinate. We simplified and nondimensionalized the radial equation and solved the resulting equation using a power series (Frobenius) method. Private aviation scheduling is complex and dynamic, requiring frequent aircraft repositioning based on demand and operational constraints, unlike fixed commercial airline schedules. As fleets grow beyond 300 aircraft, traditional deterministic methods become too slow, leading to the use of approaches such as genetic algorithms, but neural network-based methods have not seen in-depth exploration. This project models aircraft scheduling as a network, where airports and flights form a graph. Serret's Theorem says that real numbers are related by a type of Möbius transformation if and only if the tails of their regular continued fraction expansions are the same. Serret’s Theorem does not hold for Hurwitz Continued Fractions in the complex plane due to a counterexample of Lakein. By applying transformations that convert inadmissible sequences into their admissible forms, we explain Lakein's counterexample from an algorithmic perspective. We provide additional counterexamples and prove that there exists an uncountably infinite family of counterexamples.

This project addresses the problem of modeling and predicting RUL using multivariate time-series sensor data from the NASA CMAPSS turbofan engine dataset, with a focus on understanding how predictive performance changes across datasets of varying complexity. The objective is to develop a reproducible machine learning pipeline that captures degradation patterns and produces reliable time-to-failure predictions. Myoelectric prosthetic arms, which use electromyography (EMG) sensors on the surface of the forearm to convert electrical signals from residual limb muscles and mimic hand movement, are popular options for these amputees. Broad Emission-Line Limits on Stellar Winds from Small-Aperture DSLR Spectroscopy Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars have very strong stellar winds, with speeds of thousands of km/s, usually measured using high-resolution spectroscopy on large telescopes. Here, we test how well those speeds can be recovered using small-aperture, low-resolution DSLR spectroscopy. We used an 8-inch Celestron 8SE with an SA-100 grating and a Nikon D750 DSLR, giving a dispersion of about 4.1 Å per pixel. A key limitation is the instrumental resolution of the system, with an FWHM of about 30 Å, which is not small compared to the emission line widths being measured. …

This research project explores the use of FluidX3D, an open-source lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) solver, to simulate fluid behavior within a three-dimensional cube container. The system supports both standard water models and rheoscopic fluid visualization, allowing detailed observation of complex flow dynamics in real time. The simulation accurately represents fluid motion, gravity-driven behavior, and rotational response within a bounded cubic domain. Steam distillation was used to extract (R)- Linalool, Linalyl acetate, and Camphor from lavender during the steam distillation experiment. The compounds were extracted via a steam distillation apparatus. A 250 mL two-neck round-bottom flask, a thermometer adapter, 25 mL a thermometer, a condenser, a distillation head, a vacuum adapter, lab jacks, and clamps made up the apparatus. Then the lavender was massed out and added to a beaker with 100 mL of water. Over time, the distillate is collected in a vial to be analyzed.
