From Counting To Advanced Math: How Five Simple Axioms Shape The Mathematical Landscape, Joy Skaggs Apr 2026

From Counting To Advanced Math: How Five Simple Axioms Shape The Mathematical Landscape, Joy Skaggs

ATU Scholars Symposium

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, mathematics faced a foundational crisis: Greog Cantor’s set theory led to an interesting self-referencing paradox in math and questions about the logical consistency of mathematics. From this crisis, two opposing viewpoints emerged: the Formalists and the Intuitionists. The Formalists praised Cantor’s work as a way to place math on a secure logical foundation, ensuring the discipline’s purity, however the Intuitionists despised Cantor’s work and heralded Cantor as a charlatan and corrupter of the youth. The leader of the Formalists, David Hilbert, proposed a formal system of rigorous proofs to build a complete …

Use Of Basal Tree Cavities By Sylvilagus Aquaticus In Central Arkansas, Heath R. Williams

ATU Scholars Symposium

Basal tree cavities are hollow structures at the base of tree trunks utilized by many wildlife species, including small mammals, furbearers, and bats. Dumyahn and Zollner (2010) demonstrated that swamp rabbits (Sylvilagus aquaticus) use basal tree cavities and speculated that they may be used for thermoregulation at the northern limits of their geographic range or as alternative escape routes. To further investigate swamp rabbit use of basal tree cavities, we placed camera traps approximately 1 m from the entrance of the cavities (n = 43) in various Wildlife Management Areas in central Arkansas. Along with control sites without cavities (n=25), …

Comparison Of Anomaly Detection Methods On Event-Based Vision Sensor Data In A High Noise Environment, Will Johnston, Anthony L. Franz, Shannon R. Young, Rachel Oliver, Zachary Theis, Brian Mcreynolds, Michael L. Dexter Apr 2026

Comparison Of Anomaly Detection Methods On Event-Based Vision Sensor Data In A High Noise Environment, Will Johnston, Anthony L. Franz, Shannon R. Young, Rachel Oliver, Zachary Theis, Brian Mcreynolds, Michael L. Dexter

Faculty Publications

Event-based vision sensors (EVSs) provide unique frequency analysis opportunities due to their event data output and high temporal resolution. Anomaly detection methods used in hyperspectral analysis can be used on the event frequency spectra to detect targets. However, the introduction of a strong, flickering interfering source can reduce the EVS sensitivity and obscure targets of interest. Previous work presented a method showing that targets could still be detected through an overwhelming source using frequency analysis, background suppression, and statistical filtering. This paper extends that research and compares the ability of five different eigenanalysis anomaly detection methods (principal component background suppression …

Physics-Informed Neural Network Solution Of The 2d Helmholtz Equation With A Gaussian Source, Theodoros Panagiotakopoulos, Chris Velissaris, Aristotelis Nikolaos Rapsomanikis

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We present a physics-informed neural network (PINN) framework for solving the complex-valued two-dimensional Helmholtz equation with a localized Gaussian source and spatially varying permittivity. Starting from Maxwell’s equations, the frequency-domain scalar Helmholtz formulation under transverse electric (TE) polarization is derived and enforced directly within the neural network loss function. The model employs a sinusoidal representation network (SIREN) architecture to capture the oscillatory nature of wave solutions and incorporates the Sommerfeld radiation condition to impose open boundary conditions. Training is performed using a hybrid collocation strategy combined with a two-stage optimization procedure consisting of Adam followed by L-BFGS. Numerical experiments in …

Extremal Connectivity In Graphs And Matroids, Yiwei Ge Apr 2026

Extremal Connectivity In Graphs And Matroids, Yiwei Ge

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Connectivity is a central theme in both graph theory and matroid theory. This dissertation investigates extremal connectivity in graphs and matroids, with emphasis on unavoidable structures and minimal connectivity phenomena.

Chapter 2 introduces cycle-contraction minors of graphs and investigates their structural properties. We establish a connection between cc-minors and induced subgraphs via graph duality. The main result gives an unavoidable-families characterization for cc-minors of sufficiently large loopless $2$-connected graphs.

Chapter 3 studies super-minimally $3$-connected graphs, namely $3$-connected graphs that have no proper $3$-connected subgraphs. We establish extremal bounds on structural parameters of these graphs, including the minimum number of degree-$3$ …

This thesis explores topological K-theory, a powerful framework for studying invariants of topological spaces via algebraic structures. We investigate the construction of K-groups, with particular emphasis on the categorical formulation. The exposition is structured pedagogically, with careful development of the main concepts supported by detailed proofs and examples. The categories of vector bundles and projective modules are thoroughly defined and investigated. A central result studied in this thesis is the Serre–Swan theorem, which provides a bridge between the algebraic context of projective modules and the geometric context of vector bundles, enabling the use of algebraic techniques to solve geometric problems, …

Synthesis And Catalytic Activity Testing Of Coke-Resistant Nickel-Based Catalysts For Methane Reforming And Hydrogen Production, Abdulmuizz Adamson Apr 2026

Synthesis And Catalytic Activity Testing Of Coke-Resistant Nickel-Based Catalysts For Methane Reforming And Hydrogen Production, Abdulmuizz Adamson

Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses

Ni-based catalysts are widely used in methane reforming and hydrogen production, but their industrial application is limited by deactivation caused by carbon deposition (coking). This dissertation examines the role of iron as a dopant in improving catalytic performance and coking resistance, with emphasis on its incorporation method and impact on coke oxidation during different methane reforming reactions.

The results show that dispersing iron ions within the γ-Al₂O₃ support significantly enhances catalyst coking resistance and hence catalyst performance under partial oxidation and combined partial oxidation-dry reforming conditions. This improvement is attributed, mainly, to the redox function of Fe and the enhanced …

Fully Decentralized Hierarchical Federated Learning At The Edge With Post-Quantum Secure Communication, Tariq Qayyum Apr 2026

Fully Decentralized Hierarchical Federated Learning At The Edge With Post-Quantum Secure Communication, Tariq Qayyum

Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses

Federated learning (FL) enables collaborative model training without centralizing raw data, but deploying FL at scale in real edge environments remains challenging because iterative training and aggregation must operate over heterogeneous, resource-constrained, and often mobile devices with time-varying connectivity. Conventional hierarchical federated learning (HFL) partially mitigates communication cost by introducing fog/edge aggregation, yet many designs retain cloud-based global aggregation and cloud-centric coordination. This places wide-area network latency on the critical path of every training round, creates a single point of failure, and limits responsiveness as model sizes and federation scale grow. Moreover, moving coordination and aggregation closer to the edge …

Optimizing Controller Speed And Torque To Reduce Drivetrain Stress, Selene J. Welch Apr 2026

Optimizing Controller Speed And Torque To Reduce Drivetrain Stress, Selene J. Welch

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

This project investigates how torque delivery from the motor controller affects mechanical stress on the rear freewheel ratchet mechanism of a three-wheel electric race car. Excessive initial torque has caused accelerated wear and tear on the ratchet mechanism, reducing drivetrain reliability during Kansas ElectroRally competitions. Preliminary testing showed that slower, gradual acceleration prevented malfunction and allowed the vehicle to maintain top speed reliably. Prior research shows that torque-control strategies strongly influence electric-drive performance. Current research focuses on optimizing the controller’s torque and speed using the Alltrax Software ToolKit to reduce drivetrain tension while preserving the car’s performance capabilities.

A 4-Dimensional Rubik’S Cube You Can Hold: How It’S Possible And The Math Behind It, Eric J. Moon

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

This poster examines the physical 2x2x2x2, a hand-held realization of a 4-dimensional Rubik’s Cube invented by Melinda Green. Unlike most higher-dimensional twisty puzzles, which exist only as software simulations, this puzzle provides a physical model for exploring 4-dimensional rotation, symmetry, and solving methods. The poster introduces the structure of the puzzle, its canonical move system, and several algebraic ideas that help explain how scrambling and solving work.

From a mathematical perspective, the puzzle can be studied using group actions, commutators, conjugation, and combinatorial counting. In particular, the number of reachable states depends on corner permutations, corner orientations, parity restrictions, twist …
