Mathematical Logic And Computer Language, Yueun Park Apr 2026

Mathematical Logic And Computer Language, Yueun Park

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Fundamental principles of computer programming comes from mathematical logic. Mathematics enables programming languages to interpret and execute complex instructions. This project explores the possible application of mathematical logic within programming languages by developing a Boolean logic calculator in C++. The program implements a stack-based algorithm to convert infix notation (which we often use) to postfix notation (which computers can evaluate) and uses subsequent functions to evaluate the postfix notation. The program focuses on logic operators NOT, AND, and OR, classified with specific precedence hierarchies. Program analysis shows that the processes have linear time complexity, that is, O(n). The result suggests …

Unique Combinations Of Packing Integer Squares, Keith M. Dreiling, Austin Leanna, William Mooney Apr 2026

Unique Combinations Of Packing Integer Squares, Keith M. Dreiling, Austin Leanna, William Mooney

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

This research investigates a function, informally named WAK(x), that describes the number of ways to divide an integer square into integer subsquares counting only the list of parts. Previous research has shown values up to 28, though finding these values is computationally complex and requires a long runtime using computer algorithms. We attempt to find patterns in the values and many aspects of the values, hoping to find a general solution. We are unsure if a solution exists, but we have ideas for how to move forward in finding a solution.

Application Identification With Pfsense, Snort, And Openappid In Academic Lab Networks, Minh-Khanh Vu Apr 2026

Application Identification With Pfsense, Snort, And Openappid In Academic Lab Networks, Minh-Khanh Vu

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

This paper evaluates the practical capabilities and limitations of a widely used open-source network security stack—pfSense firewall, Snort Intrusion Detection System (IDS), and OpenAppID detectors—in academic cy- bersecurity laboratories and small-to-medium enterprise (SME)-like environments. In a controlled virtual testbed, we measure application-level and feature-level identifi- cation performance for major applications (Facebook, YouTube, Zoom) using the pfSense/Snort/OpenAppID configuration. The stack achieves 97% application-level identification accuracy for these applications in our lab dataset, drawing on a library of 3,374 OpenAppID detectors. However, our experiments reveal a substan- tial feature-level detection gap: specific functions such as Zoom file transfers and Facebook messaging can- …

David Berkowitz, Enzyme-Assisted Organic Synthesis & Nsf Officer, Mark A. Griep, David B. Berkowitz Apr 2026

David Berkowitz, Enzyme-Assisted Organic Synthesis & Nsf Officer, Mark A. Griep, David B. Berkowitz

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Interviews

Dr. Dave Berkowitz was born in Urbana, Illinois. He earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Chicago, where he did undergraduate research. Next, he earned his doctorate from Harvard University. However, his advisor, Steve Benner, moved from Harvard to ETH Zurich, also called the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. Dave accompanied him to Zurich, where he completed his dissertation work. When Dave returned to the U.S., he did a postdoc with the legendary Samuel Danishefsky at Yale University. In 1991, he joined UNL as an assistant professor of chemistry and quickly rose through the ranks. Dave is …

Groundwater Nitrate Contamination In Western Kansas, Sihui Wei Apr 2026

Groundwater Nitrate Contamination In Western Kansas, Sihui Wei

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Groundwater nitrate contamination is a significant environmental concern in agricultural regions of the United States. In Kansas, nitrate concentrations in some groundwater systems approach or exceed the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) maximum contaminant level of 10 mg/L. This study analyzes nitrate concentration data from groundwater samples in western Kansas, with a focus on the High Plains aquifer, where agricultural activity is intensive. Using data analysis and regression methods, spatial patterns in nitrate distribution were identified. Results indicate that nitrate concentrations vary across sampling locations, with higher levels generally associated with regions of intensive agricultural activity. Several sites approach or exceed …

Desialylation And Sialidase Secretion From Monocytes And Macrophages Upon Lps Activation, Yu Zhao, Majdi Aljohani, Morgan Pychowycz, Xue-Long Sun Apr 2026

Desialylation And Sialidase Secretion From Monocytes And Macrophages Upon Lps Activation, Yu Zhao, Majdi Aljohani, Morgan Pychowycz, Xue-Long Sun

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Introduction The cell surface expresses a dense layer of glycans often terminated with sialic acids (Sias), known as sialylation, which represents different cellular statuses. Meanwhile, the removal of Sias from the glycans catalyzed by sialidase (desialylation) is also involved in many biological processes, such as inflammatory responses. Previous studies demonstrated that desialylation is involved in LPS/TLR4 signaling pathway and pro-inflammatory cytokine production. In this report, we systematically profiled desialylation and sialidase activity, expression and secretion from monocytes and macrophages upon LPS activation. Methods THP-1 monocytes and THP-1 macrophages were activated by LPS (100 ng/mL) for 24 hours. The cellular Sia changes …

Mathematical Modeling, Analysis And Numerical Simulation Of Air Quality Using The Advection-Diffusion-Reaction Equation, Md Timorul Islam Apr 2026

Mathematical Modeling, Analysis And Numerical Simulation Of Air Quality Using The Advection-Diffusion-Reaction Equation, Md Timorul Islam

Math Theses

In this thesis, we study an air quality model by using a nonlinear one-dimensional advection-diffusion-reaction system of partial differential equations for NO-NO2-O3 chemical cycle. The model incorporates advection, diffusion, chemical reactions, and source terms, and is formulated based on standard atmospheric chemistry.

We first develop numerical methods to approximate the solutions of the governing equations. Both explicit and implicit finite difference schemes are considered, and the implicit scheme provides approximations without any restrictions on the stability.

The model is then nondimensionalized to identify key parameter combinations governing the system. This leads us to a regime in which the transport and …
