Rickettsia Africae is a pathogen that causes African tick-bite fever (ATBF). Transmission typically occurs from ticks within the Central and South African regions. Previous studies suggested that ATBF is not uncommon amongst travelers to rural sub-Saharan Africa, especially during the rainy months of November through April. However, this case report highlights a woman who contracted ATBF in novel conditions. The 70-year-old woman reported travelling strictly to and from the local church and hotel for her four-day stay in July. Numerically solving the electronic structure problem is a fundamentally difficult problem due to the exponential growth in the dimension of the Hilbert space as the system size increases. In order to solve problems at a chemically relevant accuracy, both the choice of basis set and numerical method are important factors that are intrinsically connected.

In this thesis, we study the discretization and resulting compression of electronic Hamiltonians using diagonal basis sets. A diagonal basis set approximately diagonalizes the matrix and tensor representations of the one- and two-body potentials. The CeBrA detector array at Florida State University’s Fox Lab uses a collection of CeBr3 scintillator detectors to collect gamma rays emitted by excited nuclear reaction products to gain information about nuclear energy levels of a nucleus of interest. When the array was commissioned, it contained five individual detectors. Expanding the array maximizes its efficiency and accuracy. In collaboration with FSU, Ursinus College has purchased nine additional detectors that will be added to the array at the end of the summer. One of the leading drivers of biodiversity loss is land use change due to the ever-increasing demand for food, livestock feed, biofiber, and biofuel. The concept of human appropriation of net primary production (HANPP) was developed to measure the impact that humans have on the environment by accounting for biomass removed from the environment in the form of crops, timber, and grazing. Behavior Of Magnetic Reconnection In The Relativistic Regime Under The Presence Of Shear Flows And Guide Field, Sarah Peery

Magnetic Reconnection is a ubiquitous phenomenon in plasma, where magnetic energy is released into plasma thermal and kinetic energy through the rearrangement of magnetic topology. In this study we derive fluid scaling models to predict the steady state and onset behavior of magnetic reconnection in the highly magnetized (relativistic) regime, in the presence of plasma shear flows and a (out-of-plane) guide field. We use 2.5D kinetic particle-in-cell simulations to motivate and validate these models. We find that, similar to the non-relativistic regime, shear flows parallel to the reconnecting magnetic field will delay reconnection onset and slow outflow jets. They can …

Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) is a cornerstone crop for Iraq and the wider MENA region, yet reliable in-field diagnosis of leaf disorders remains slow, labour-intensive, and constrained by a limited pool of agronomists. This paper presents PalmNet, a full-stack diagnostic system that classifies nine leaf conditions through a calibrated edge-cloud framework. The system is developed and evaluated on a public dataset of 3,089 field images spanning the nine classes, using a 70/15/15 stratified split. Bromeliaceae, a neo-tropical plant family encompassing over 3,000 species, exhibit two modes of reproduction: sexual reproduction via flowers and seeds, and asexual reproduction via genetically identical clonal rosettes. The vegetative bodies of bromeliads form rosettes with new leaves emerging from the center and clonal rosettes emerging above a single leaf in the rosette, resulting in a genetic individual consisting of a seed-grown rosette and multiple iterations of clonal rosettes. To overcome the fast oscillatory behavior of correlation functions for extracting scattering phase shift in real-time quantum simulations encountered in the work of Guo et al. [Phys. Rev. D 113, 054512 (2026)], we propose and test two solutions in the present work. One is to simulate Hermitian systems in imaginary time, and the other is to simulate non-Hermitian systems in real time. We demonstrate that both approaches lead to the problem of nonunitary quantum evolution that can be solved by combining two quantum algorithms: block encoding and Hadamard test. Understanding these layered interactions is essential for improving traffic safety and for designing the next generation of intelligent, connected, and automated transportation systems. This project explores advanced image analysis techniques to assess the microstructure of highly strained austenitic stainless steel. Utilizing Python imaging libraries such as scikit-image and OpenCV, we aim to extract precise measurements for grain size from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. These metrics will be examined against the computed grain sizes of the sample from electron backscatter diffraction measurements. By automating the extraction of grain size measurements from SEM images, this study contributes to steamlining the quality assurance/ quality control of industrially processed materials.

Understanding the complex causal relationships underlying aviation accidents is critical for improving safety and preventing future incidents. However, much of this information exists in unstructured narrative reports, making large-scale analysis difficult. This project aims to automatically extract and model causal chains from National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) accident narratives using a combination of traditional natural language processing (NLP) techniques, transformer-based architectures, and graph-based knowledge representation. Traditional NLP methods, including named entity recognition, dependency parsing, and rule-based pattern matching, will be used to identify structured cause–effect relationships. The Veritas asteroid family, located in the outer main belt, is believed to have formed from the catastrophic breakup of a parent body approximately 8.3 million years ago (e.g., Nesvorný et al., 2003). Larger fragments remained in the main belt, while smaller particles evolved inward under radiation forces, forming a toroidal dust structure observable in infrared data as paired bands. Previous studies (e.g., Dermott et al., 2001) have shown that these bands can be linked to their parent families and modeled from their initial disruptions. Therefore, a generalizable object manipulation method is crucial for extraterrestrial environments. This is where imperceptible pixel-level modifications cause confident misclassification, posing serious risks in defense and aerospace applications.
