As National Louis University seeks to plan and advance its way amid the potential perils and pitfalls of so-named artificial intelligence, one finds that with reasonable workflows and guard rails, the use of AI proposes both potential promise and prospect, to assist and augment the natural intelligence that students and teachers bring to the classroom, encouraging them to pursue STEM-related activities with the preparation and deployment of focused and directed AI-bots. This paper presents examples and a case study of that directed and focused approach, the incremental lessons learned to date, and a proposed path to advance worthwhile AI …

2-D Materials: The Synthesis Of Solid-State Fuel From Metastable Diboride, Alma Kolakji May 2026

2-D Materials: The Synthesis Of Solid-State Fuel From Metastable Diboride, Alma Kolakji

Chemistry

2-D materials are widely recognized for their anisotropic mechanical and electrical properties, surpassing their bulk counterparts. These superior characteristics of 2-D materials arise from their high surface-to-volume ratio and strong in-plane bonds. Current routes to exfoliate bulk material into 2-D nanosheets rely on weak interlayer Van der Waals forces and traditional top-down techniques. These methods are dominated by physical “force,” such as liquid-phase and mechanical exfoliation. The downside is that they apply only to weakly bonded VdW materials, limiting the variety of possible 2-D materials. To expand the variety, researchers have studied the synthesis of borophene (boron sheets). Borophene is …

Primitive Pythagorean Triples In Lean And Reduction Modulo Odd Prime Powers, Luke Biddle May 2026

Primitive Pythagorean Triples In Lean And Reduction Modulo Odd Prime Powers, Luke Biddle

Mathematical Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses

Primitive Pythagorean triples (PPTs) are (a,b,c) triples that satisfy the Pythagorean theorem and share no other common factors outside of 1. This project examines these PPTs reduction modulo odd prime powers by combining proof writing and number-theoretical analysis with the process of verification and formalization in the Lean proof coding language. Using the parameterization of PPTs generated by using the unit circle with additional conditions, we investigate how these triples behave modulo  for odd primes , with emphasis on counting the number of elements in the set of PPTs (a,b,c) modulo pn . By using cases based on initial …

Turbulent Plenum Jet-Crossflow Validation Via Subgrid Scale Model Variation And Upstream Forcing Under Dynamic Hybrid Rans-Les, Cole W. Mccallum May 2026

Turbulent Plenum Jet-Crossflow Validation Via Subgrid Scale Model Variation And Upstream Forcing Under Dynamic Hybrid Rans-Les, Cole W. Mccallum

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

In modern gas turbine design, film cooling has become ubiquitous as a method for limiting heat transfer between high temperature gases post-combustion and the surface of downstream blades. This paper validates the use of various computational fluid dynamics techniques in recreating an experiment measuring adiabatic effectiveness over a surface downstream of a compound-angle N2 plenum jet incident on a turbulent-air boundary layer [1]. To do this, both RANS and Dynamic Hybrid RANS-LES (DHRL) methods are implemented and compared to previous research [2]. The latter method is then modified through implementation of a different subgrid scale (SGS) model and through addition …

Enhancing Control Charting Schemes And Exploring New Assessment Metrics To Advance Quality Control And Cyber-Attack Detection In Manufacturing, Ahmad Al Majali May 2026

Enhancing Control Charting Schemes And Exploring New Assessment Metrics To Advance Quality Control And Cyber-Attack Detection In Manufacturing, Ahmad Al Majali

Dissertations

The increasing integration of digital technologies and industrial control systems in modern manufacturing has introduced new cybersecurity vulnerabilities within cyber–physical production environments. Malicious actors can exploit these vulnerabilities to induce subtle process deviations that degrade product quality while remaining undetected by conventional statistical monitoring tools. Such attacks can be deliberately engineered to manipulate process behavior through transient shifts that vary in magnitude, duration, and frequency. Despite extensive research on transient shifts caused by assignable causes in Statistical Process Control (SPC), limited attention has been given to intelligently designed cyber–physical attacks that exploit the structural characteristics and limitations of control charting …

Designing Enhanced Nonlinearity In Plasmonic Devices With Epsilon-Near-Zero Films, Kevin Tran Le May 2026

Designing Enhanced Nonlinearity In Plasmonic Devices With Epsilon-Near-Zero Films, Kevin Tran Le

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (MS) Theses

The growing demand for energy-efficient optical information processing motivates compact nonlinear photonic devices that can operate at low power. Silicon photonics is a mature platform for linear optical functions, but nonlinear operation remains challenging because of its weak Kerr response, two-photon absorption at telecommunication wavelengths, and limited compatibility with deeply subwavelength plasmonic confinement. This thesis computationally investigates epsilon-near-zero thin films integrated into plasmonic waveguide architectures as a route toward stronger light–matter interaction in compact nonlinear devices.

Two waveguide geometries are examined: a hybrid metal-insulator-metal plasmonic slab waveguide incorporating an ultrathin indium tin oxide epsilon-near-zero layer (5–50 nm), and a dielectric-loaded …

Sequential Robustness In Adversarial Reinforcement Learning, Roman Lok-Ming Belaire May 2026

Sequential Robustness In Adversarial Reinforcement Learning, Roman Lok-Ming Belaire

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

My goal is to build autonomous systems that expand the reach of human capability in challenging domains such as undersea and space exploration, disaster response, and large-scale infrastructure. In everyday settings, these systems will increasingly appear in safety-critical applications such as autonomous driving, robotics, and industrial manufacturing. A central requirement for these systems is the ability to operate reliably under uncertainty, particularly when the environment behaves in unanticipated ways.

The robust handling of unforeseen environment dynamics is therefore a technical cornerstone of autonomous decision-making; Adversarial attacks provide a useful and principled lens through which to study this problem. Adversarial \textit{robustness}, …

Perspectives On Interpretability For Neural Text Representations, Jia Peng Lim May 2026

Perspectives On Interpretability For Neural Text Representations, Jia Peng Lim

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

In this dissertation, we investigate interpretability in the three elements of learning neural text representations: inputs, passed into models, to produce probabilistic outputs. We emphasise perspectives as we present alternative novel methods to mine and organise meaning in this work.

Models. We initiate our investigation by examining Neural Topic Models (NTM), proposing an alternate angle of interpreting its word-topic distribution, producing better topic representations for interpretation. Our method maps the problem of finding these better interpretations to classical NP-hard graph problems, enabling examination of topic distributions in a composite manner. Next, we apply our previous findings to extract interpretations from …

Applications Of Cyrene For Pharmaceutical Synthesis, Anjali Mae Rabindran May 2026

Applications Of Cyrene For Pharmaceutical Synthesis, Anjali Mae Rabindran

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Cyrene is a cellulose-derived molecule that has gained interest in green chemistry as both a solvent and precursor for pharmaceutical intermediates. In this study, biocatalytic and chemical strategies were evaluated for converting Cyrene into these intermediates. Cyrene was carried through variations of a five-step sequence: reduction, reductive amination, esterification, tosylate salt formation, and Lewis-acid mediated acetal opening to generate ring-opened pyranose products (“deoxy sugars” and “deoxy amino sugars”). We successfully synthesized deoxy sugar intermediates; however, the production of stereochemically pure deoxy amino sugar intermediates was limited by unresolved diastereomeric mixtures. These findings highlight the promise of Cyrene as a renewable …

Sql Query Optimization - Human Vs. Chatgpt, Hailey Dennis May 2026

Sql Query Optimization - Human Vs. Chatgpt, Hailey Dennis

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present

Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT have become ubiquitous tools for working professionals in the software industry. Many engineers are finding new ways to increase productivity by offloading tasks onto LLMs, while others are finding it difficult to trust code produced artificially, even after review. Taking a look at both perspectives, this study aims to compare a human’s ability to optimize SQL queries to that of an LLM and assess the experience using both methods.

Manual query optimization is a tedious task that relies heavily on statistics, heuristics, and good intuition. The SQL developer must search for the optimal …

Open Space Management Planning: A Framework And Case Study From Eagle Mountain City, Utah, Nathan K. Shumway May 2026

Open Space Management Planning: A Framework And Case Study From Eagle Mountain City, Utah, Nathan K. Shumway

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present

Open Space Management Plans (OSMPs) are increasingly used by municipalities to guide the long-term stewardship of natural lands; however, little formal guidance exists regarding how these plans are structured, developed, or organized in practice. While numerous OSMPs are publicly available, their compositional logic, procedural workflows, and thematic priorities remain largely undocumented within academic literature. This study addresses that gap through a qualitative document analysis of fifteen publicly accessible OSMPs from the western United States, published between 2015 and 2024.

Using manual matrix-based coding in Microsoft Excel, each plan was analyzed through three lenses: structural composition, procedural development, and thematic content. …

From The Hopf Fibration To Instantons: Geometry In Gauge Theory, Emily D. Wessman May 2026

From The Hopf Fibration To Instantons: Geometry In Gauge Theory, Emily D. Wessman

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

This paper explores the relationship between topology, differential geometry, and gauge theory through the study of Yang-Mills theory and its solutions, known as instantons. Beginning with the Hopf fibration, we show how principal fiber bundles encode topological information and appear in physical contexts such as electromagnetism. In particular, we consider how the fibration of S3 over CP1 ≅ S2 represents the Dirac magnetic monopole, and how the Chern number associated with the bundle is exactly the winding number for the monopole.

We then develop the framework of gauge theory, focusing on connections on principal SU(2) bundles …

Utilizing Pine Needles To Compare Spatial Profiles Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (Pahs) In Two Urban Areas, Autumn Jensen May 2026

Utilizing Pine Needles To Compare Spatial Profiles Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (Pahs) In Two Urban Areas, Autumn Jensen

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are an important class of semivolatile air pollutants known for their adverse health impacts. This research used conifer needles as passive air samplers to create spatial maps of two Utah cities (Rose Park and Spanish Fork) to compare overall PAH exposure and identify any differences in their congener profiles or PAH “fingerprints”. Conifer needles were chosen due to their prevalence as a passive air sampler in previous research and their ubiquity in urban and suburban environments. Second year needles were collected and the concentrations are considered to be an annually averaged view of the PAH concentrations …

Discovering Strategic Behaviors In The Floor Using Reinforcement Learning, Kevin Parks May 2026

Discovering Strategic Behaviors In The Floor Using Reinforcement Learning, Kevin Parks

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present

This project investigates how a reinforcement learning (RL) agent can develop territorial strategies in a highly stochastic, grid-based approximation of the television game show The Floor. I design a custom Gymnasium-compatible environment that models the show’s core mechanics on a 10×10 board, including probabilistic duels governed by player skill, adjacency-constrained attacks, chain-attack rules, and a Randomizer mechanism for selecting new initiating players. A Maskable Proximal Policy Optimization (Maskable PPO) agent is trained under several reward configurations and evaluated against stochastic non learning opponents as well as random and “always pass” baselines.

Across experiments, the best-performing configuration achieves a win …

Beyond Morphology: Testing Molecular Assessment Of Macroinvertebrate Communities In Alpine Streams Of The Teton Range, Usa, Joshua Vollmer May 2026

Beyond Morphology: Testing Molecular Assessment Of Macroinvertebrate Communities In Alpine Streams Of The Teton Range, Usa, Joshua Vollmer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Alpine streams and the macroinvertebrate communities that reside within them are threatened by the rapidly changing climate. Long-term monitoring of these communities is required to understand how they are changing and to predict their future trajectories. Historically, stream monitoring and assessment has been performed by collecting and identifying individuals using their morphological traits. However, in alpine aquatic ecosystems, distinct macroinvertebrate species often lack the morphological differences that allow them to be distinguished. DNA metabarcoding, an alternative method for identification which uses genetics instead of morphological differences, is not impacted by this issue, and therefore, may be better suited for alpine …

Base Running: A Lost Art In Baseball, Ethan York May 2026

Base Running: A Lost Art In Baseball, Ethan York

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

In an era of baseball dominated by home runs and launch angles, the subtle art of baserunning is often overlooked, despite its measurable impact on winning games. Baserunning Runs (BsR) addresses this gap by quantifying the number of runs a player contributes through performance on the basepaths, capturing value beyond traditional metrics like stolen bases. This study constructs multiple regression models that predict BsR for Major League Baseball (MLB) players based on baserunning-related statistics. The primary objective is to examine the association between BsR and key predictors, including stolen bases (SB), extra bases taken (EB), and sprint speed (SS), while …

A Forecasting Framework For Distribution Center Capacity Utilization: An Applied Industry Study, Jordan J. Shortt May 2026

A Forecasting Framework For Distribution Center Capacity Utilization: An Applied Industry Study, Jordan J. Shortt

Data Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

This project develops and evaluates a predictive modeling framework for forecasting distribution center capacity utilization at Company Y, with monthly forecast horizons up to one year. Motivated by the operational challenges of seasonal demand volatility, promotional cycles, and the absence of a formally defined capacity metric, the study first constructs a historical capacity utilization measure from raw warehouse management system data — reconciling item volumes, location dimensions, and utilization factors across all DCs — which serves as the target variable for all modeling work. Four models are developed and evaluated against a naïve seasonal baseline: SARIMA, LightGBM, LSTM, and a …

Developing Tracking Compliance Standards For Inbound Freight: A Data-Driven Industry Application At O’Reilly Automotive, Jackson Endacott May 2026

Developing Tracking Compliance Standards For Inbound Freight: A Data-Driven Industry Application At O’Reilly Automotive, Jackson Endacott

Data Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

Visibility of inbound freight is critical for managing operational efficiency, yet many organizations lack standardized compliance metrics for third-party carriers to uphold, preventing them from utilizing tracking data to make data-driven decisions. During a summer internship with the Transportation Department at O’Reilly Automotive, data inconsistencies were addressed in the Transportation Management System (TMS), and that data was utilized to create tracking compliance standards for third-party carriers. Data populated from various sources within O’Reilly’s TMS was cleaned, validated, and utilized to create a Tracking Scorecard that evaluates message transmission rates, timeliness, and errors. This tool provides actionable insights to improve tracking …

Pyspqr: A Python Package For Density Estimation Using Deep Learning, Cameron Eddy, Reetam Majumder May 2026

Pyspqr: A Python Package For Density Estimation Using Deep Learning, Cameron Eddy, Reetam Majumder

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

Splines are used for representing complex functions. In statistics, splines can be used for distributional shapes that are difficult to model by traditional parametric approaches. Ramsay (1) uses M-Spline bases to estimate continuous distributions. Semi-Parametric Quantile Regression (SPQR), developed by Xu and Reich (2), models conditional distributions where a neural network is used to estimate the basis function weights that depend on covariates. (3) implements a package for SPQR in R. We build on this by implementing a version of SPQR in Python with PyTorch. By using PyTorch, we can use more sophisticated deep learning architectures than those available in …

Towards Multi-Hop Retrieval Using Bipartite Question-Oriented Graphs, Micah Mccollum May 2026

Towards Multi-Hop Retrieval Using Bipartite Question-Oriented Graphs, Micah Mccollum

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

Accurately answering multi-hop questions requires full retrieval of multiple, interdependent passages and is a long-standing problem in the area of natural language question answering (QA). While retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) helps address single-hop questions, many retrievers presently focus on semantic similarity in a dense vector space, which is insufficient for handling multi-hop questions specifically. To ameliorate this, we propose constructing a bipartite question- oriented graph composed of hypothetically generated questions connected to passages at index time. The construction of the graph is guided by a large language model (LLM) to prioritize the formation of edges that signal whether a question can …

Evaluating The Use Of Extended Reality Technology To Improve Marching Band Conducting Patterns, Nathan R. Fuhrman May 2026

Evaluating The Use Of Extended Reality Technology To Improve Marching Band Conducting Patterns, Nathan R. Fuhrman

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

Conducting pattern consistency is an essential skill for marching band drum

majors, yet developing this consistency through individual practice remains diffi-

cult without real-time feedback. This thesis investigates if the use of extended

reality technologies can be used to enhance the conducting skills of novice drum

majors. Using the Meta Quest 3’s passthrough capability, the system overlays vi-

sual feedback elements — including a 3D pattern guide, path visualization, tempo

cues, and a real-time score — onto the user’s physical environment. A within-

subjects study with seven participants evaluated eight combinations of three binary

feedback variables: pattern guide visibility, tempo …

Autonomous Agentic Orchestration For Physics-Aware Scientific Discovery: An Integrative Multimodal Framework For 2d Material Characterization, Sankalp Pandey May 2026

Autonomous Agentic Orchestration For Physics-Aware Scientific Discovery: An Integrative Multimodal Framework For 2d Material Characterization, Sankalp Pandey

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

The advancement of next-generation semiconductor and quantum technologies relies on the scalability of the fabrication of two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals heterostructures. However, this process is severely bottlenecked by characterization workflows. Optical microscopy provides high-throughput imaging of 2D material flakes, but lacks the explicit physical priors required for the discernment of sub-nanometer thickness variations, such as distinguishing monolayers from bilayers. The use of computer vision models to automate the localization and characterization process of the flakes was proposed. As a part of this effort, we develop QuantumFlake, an open-source framework to streamline the integration and deployment of computer vision models …
