Understanding And Tuning Magnetism In Van Der Waals Magnetic Compounds, Rabindra Basnet May 2023

Understanding And Tuning Magnetism In Van Der Waals Magnetic Compounds, Rabindra Basnet

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The recently discovered two-dimensional (2D) magnetism has attracted intensive attention due to possible magnetic phenomenon arising from 2D magnetism and their promising potential for spintronics applications. The advances in 2D magnetism have motivated the study of layered magnetic materials, and further enhanced our ability to tune their magnetic properties. Among various layered magnets, tunable magnetism has been widely investigated in metal thiophosphates MPX3. It is a class of magnetic van der Waals (vdW) materials with antiferromagnetic ordering persisting down to atomically thin limit. Their magnetism originates from the localized moments due to 3d electrons in transition metal ions. So, their …

Physics

Strong-lensing time delays enable the measurement of the Hubble constant (H0) independently of other traditional methods. The main limitation to the precision of time-delay cosmography is mass-sheet degeneracy (MSD). Some of the previous TDCOSMO analyses broke the MSD by making standard assumptions about the mass density profile of the lens galaxy, reaching 2% precision from seven lenses. However, this approach could potentially bias the H0 measurement or underestimate the errors. For this work, we broke the MSD for the first time using spatially resolved kinematics of the lens galaxy in RXJ1131−1231 obtained from the Keck Cosmic …

Comparison Of Different Robust Methods In Linear Regression And Applications In Cardiovascular Data, Jagannath Das May 2023

Comparison Of Different Robust Methods In Linear Regression And Applications In Cardiovascular Data, Jagannath Das

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Due to advanced technology and wide source of data collection, high-dimensional data is available in several fields, including healthcare, bioinformatics, medicine, epidemiology, economics, finance, sociology, and climatology. In those datasets, outliers are generally encountered due to technical errors, heterogeneous sources, or the effect of some confounding variables. As outliers are often difficult to detect in high-dimensional data, the standard approaches may fail to model such data and produce misleading information. In this thesis, we studied Huber and Tukey's M-estimators for linear regression that automatically down-weight outliers and provide a good fit. We also investigated two variable selection methods -- LASSO …

Generalized Additive Model Using Marginal Integration Estimation Techniques With Interactions, Tahiru Mahama May 2023

Generalized Additive Model Using Marginal Integration Estimation Techniques With Interactions, Tahiru Mahama

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Marginal Integration (MI) is a statistical method that is extensively employed to estimatecomponent functions of the nonparametric additive models. The shortcoming of the purely additive model is that interaction between predictor variables is often ignored, and it may produce poor performance in some real applications. As a result, this research considers the second-order interactions in the regression models. The primary objective is to use marginal integration techniques to estimate the nonparametric additive functions. We compare this model with other models/estimators such as the Generalized Additive Model (GAM), Generalized Additive Model with Selection (GAMSEL), Robust Marginal Integration (RMI), Ordinary Least Squares …

Microbial processes such as soil enzyme production are a major driver of decomposition and a current topic of interest in arctic soils due to the effects of climate warming. Despite the advances in understanding soil enzymes, there are still knowledge gaps regarding the role of enzymes in decomposition. In this dissertation, I addressed three of those gaps in the following chapters: (Ch.2) to explore the location of enzymes within the soil matrix, (Ch.3) to identify peptides matched to soil enzymes produced by microorganisms for organic matter decomposition, and (Ch.4) understand the longevity of enzymes in the soil after microbial production. …

On The Predictability Of Appropriate Prosody Of Dialog Markers Directly From The Local Context, Anindita Nath May 2023

On The Predictability Of Appropriate Prosody Of Dialog Markers Directly From The Local Context, Anindita Nath

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Today's state-of-the-art spoken dialog systems lack context-appropriate prosody in their responses, often making them sound unnatural. Better modeling of this contextual dependency would enable natural prosodic responsiveness. Accordingly, this dissertation explores the extent to which the prosody of a dialog marker can be predicted directly from the prosody of its local context. The prediction performance was evaluated in terms of the similarity between the predicted and the observed prosodic features as measured by the reduction of root mean square error from the baseline. This prediction task was accomplished for multiple combinations of various sets of context features and different machine …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Spatial variability in soil CO2 efflux across landscapes is an important feature of the â??Critical Zoneâ?? within dryland ecosystems. In dryland critical zones, resources are often distributed in patches or resource islands. Although this is particularly true in natural settings, the significance of spatial variability in CO2 efflux and its patterns also extends to dryland agriculture. In both irrigated and unirrigated systems, human management practices can significantly impact both organic and inorganic carbon cycling processes, highlighting the importance of studying CO2 efflux in these systems. We examined the spatial patterns of soil CO2 efflux and quantified the magnitude and scale …

DERs can assist in the grid in different manners, not only by meeting energy demand …

Analyzing Software Maintenance Through Machine Learning And Mining Software Repositories Approaches, Sayed Mohsin Reza May 2023

Analyzing Software Maintenance Through Machine Learning And Mining Software Repositories Approaches, Sayed Mohsin Reza

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The rapid growth of software systems demands meticulous planning and maintenance to accommodate the evolution of the code base over extended periods. Without maintenance, software systems will become more complex, low in quality, and hence unsustainable. Software engineers who perform maintenance often strive to optimize code quality or minimize code smells in a timely manner. Several techniques have been used to detect code quality or code smells as a part of software maintenance. Most of these techniques are based on heuristics, which create detection rules using a few metrics. These approaches have reasonable accuracy but do not work in cross-project …

Temporal Trends In Dryland Soil Carbon Fluxes In Response To Artificial And Natural Pulsed Moisture Events, Briana Alyce Salcido

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Critical zone processes in drylands play a crucial role in the global carbon cycle, and one of the most important processes is soil CO2 efflux at the interface between soils and the atmosphere, which represents a main pathway for loss of carbon. Predicting the carbon dynamics at this interface is challenging due to the complexity of belowground processes, which include both biotic (soil respiration) and abiotic (calcite precipitation) production of CO2, as well as transport processes that include both diffusive and advective components. In this study, we aimed to investigate the contribution of soil air displacement to soil CO2 efflux …

Developing And Applying Computational Methods On Biomolecules, Shengjie Sun May 2023

Developing And Applying Computational Methods On Biomolecules, Shengjie Sun

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Computational biophysics is an interdisciplinary subject that uses numerical algorithms to study the physical principles underlying biological phenomena and processes. Electrostatic interactions play an important role in computational molecular biophysics and their potential impact on disease mechanisms. At distances larger than several Angstroms, electrostatic interactions dominate all other forces, while the alteration of short-range electrostatic pairwise interactions can also have significant effects. The dual nature of electrostatic interactions, being dominant at long-range and specific at short-range, underscores their profound implications for wild-type structure and function. Any disruption of the complex electrostatic network of interactions may abolish wild-type functionality and could …

Outlier Detection In Multivariate And High-Dimensional Datasets, Yuanhong Wu

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Accurate detection of outliers is crucial in the field of statistical analysis. Using classical statisticalmodels without considering the presence of outliers in the data can lead to misleading outcomes. There exist a myriad of procedures to detect outliers in statistics. We concentrate on the statistical techniques that can robustly identify outliers in data sets. To this end, we pursue two aims. First, we give an extensive overview of robust statistical methods which are still popular in recent years for outlier detection. We provide the definitions, algorithms and also discuss some important properties of these methods. Second, two real examples are …

Spatially Adaptive Estimation Of Spectrum, Yi Xie May 2023

Spatially Adaptive Estimation Of Spectrum, Yi Xie

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

A time series may be analyzed either in the time or in the frequency domain. When working in the frequency domain, the main objective is to estimate the underlying spectrum. Various approaches have been proposed to this end, but most are based on smoothing the periodogram using a single smoothing parameter across all Fourier frequencies. Such a global smoothing parameter may result in a biased estimate. To improve the estimation, in this paper, we smooth the log periodogram by placing a dynamic shrinkage prior, such that varying degrees of smoothing may be applied to different regions of the Fourier frequencies, …

Detecting Complex Cyber Attacks Using Decoys With Online Reinforcement Learning, Marcus Gutierrez May 2023

Detecting Complex Cyber Attacks Using Decoys With Online Reinforcement Learning, Marcus Gutierrez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Most vulnerabilities discovered in cybersecurity can be associated with their own singular piece of software. I investigate complex vulnerabilities, which may require multiple software to be present. These complex vulnerabilities represent 16.6% of all documented vulnerabilities and are more dangerous on average than their simple vulnerability counterparts. In addition to this, because they often require multiple pieces of software to be present, they are harder to identify overall as specific combinations are needed for the vulnerability to appear.

I consider the motivating scenario where an attacker is repeatedly deploying exploits that use complex vulnerabilities into an Airport Wi-Fi. The network …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Toeplitz matrices have garnered renewed interest in recent years due to their practical applications in engineering and computational sciences. Additionally, research has shown their connection to other matrices and their significance in matrix theory. For example, one study demonstrated that any matrix can be expressed as the product of Toeplitz matrices \citep{ye2016every}, while another showed that any square matrix is similar to a Toeplitz matrix \citep{mackey1999every}.

Numerous studies have examined various properties of Toeplitz matrices, including ideals of lower triangular Toeplitz matrices \citep{dogan9some}, matrix power computation with band Toeplitz structures \citep{dogan2017matrix}, and norms of Toeplitz matrices. Moreover, the use of …

Seismicity, Tectonics, And Site Response In The Nepalese Himalayas, Mohan Pant May 2023

Seismicity, Tectonics, And Site Response In The Nepalese Himalayas, Mohan Pant

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The continental collision between the Indian plate and the Eurasian plate at ~55 Ma (Molnar and Tapponnier, 1975) has uplifted the northern part of Nepal forming the Himalayas. This convergence of India and Eurasia produced intra-upper crustal shear zones and thickened the crust to its present thickness of 70 km (Molnar, 1988; Zhao et al, 1993). The convergence rate across the Nepalese Himalayas is estimated between 17-21 mm/yr. (Ader et al., 2012). Because of this convergence, the region has experienced large, devastating earthquakes, including the 1934 Mw~8.2 Nepal-Bihar earthquake (Dunn et al., 1939) and two recent earthquakes on April 25, …

Enhancing Earthquake Detection Through Machine Learning- An Application To The 2017 Mw 8.2 Tehuantepec Earthquake In Mexico, Marc Adrian Garcia

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The Tehuantepec seismic gap, located off the southern shore of Oaxaca and Chiapas, Mexico, was previously thought to be an aseismic zone due to no significant event in 100 years. The September 8, 2017 (M8.2) Tehuantepec earthquake disproved this idea and added many questions surrounding the Mexican subduction zone. Specifically, the earthquake did not occur at the subduction megathrust. It ruptured the subducting plate below the megathrust and appeared to stop at the megathrust. Following this event, as well as the September 19, 2017 (M7.1) Morelos-Puebla earthquake, researchers from the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), Universidad Autónoma Cuidad …

Flexible Models For The Estimation Of Treatment Effect, Habeeb Abolaji Bashir May 2023

Flexible Models For The Estimation Of Treatment Effect, Habeeb Abolaji Bashir

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Estimation of treatment effect is an important problem which is well studied in the literature. While the regression models are one of the most commonly used techniques for the estimation of treatment effect, they are prone to model misspecification. To minimize the model misspecification bias, flexible nonparametric models are introduced for the estimation. Continuing this line of research, we propose two flexible nonparametric models that allow the treatment effect to vary across different levels of covariates. We provide estimation algorithms for both these models. Using simulations and data analysis, we illustrate the usefulness of the proposed methods.

Development Of Multi-Configuration Methods On Density Functional Theory Orbitals And Application On The Study Of Dimers, Jose Gustavo Bravo Flores May 2023

Development Of Multi-Configuration Methods On Density Functional Theory Orbitals And Application On The Study Of Dimers, Jose Gustavo Bravo Flores

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The configuration interaction (CI) methods is an exact method to solve the non relativistic Schrodinger equation, describing the wave function as a linear combination of Slater determinants. Because the computation time grows factorially as the number of electrons, CI is mostly used for relatively small systems. Density functional theory (DFT) rose as one of the most used methods for computational quantum chemistry in the last 30 years. DFT can describe a system's properties with the electron density, which only depends of of three coordinates. Due to its low computational costs it allows one to study bigger systems than CI, however …
