Urbanization, industrialization, and climate change have played a major role in the pollution of waterways, leading to a global increasing trend of harmful algal blooms (HAB) while jeopardizing water quality. Phytoplankton and HAB were evaluated within the highly urbanized and historically polluted state of New Jersey to help provide statewide baseline data for HAB and water quality management. A total of three studies were included in this dissertation. In the first study, phytoplankton communities were characterized in freshwaters of New Jersey during the cyanobacterial HAB season and their relationships to water quality at both statewide and ecoregion levels were examined. …

Reactions between Rongalite (Na+O-SOCH2OH) and epoxides were studied with the aim of developing new synthetic routes for the procurement of sulfone diols. This class of compounds contains essential building blocks in the construction of sulfur heterocycles, which have been implied in the development of several medicinal compounds. Thus far, the desired diols have not been isolated. During control experiments with bromo alcohols, an unknown product was isolated but remains to be identified.

We consider the dynamics of inertial and non-inertial particles in various flows. We investigate the underlying structures of the flow field by examining their Lagrangian coherent structures (LCS), which are found by computing finitetime Lyapunov exponents (FTLE). We compare the behavior of massless noninertial particles using the velocity fields from four models, the Duffing oscillator, the Bickley jet, the double-gyre flow, and a quasi-geostrophic geophysical flow model, with that of inertial particles. For inertial particles with finite size and mass, we use the Maxey-Riley equation to describe the particle’s motion. We explore the preferential aggregation of inertial particles and demonstrate …

Studying ice sheet behavior during the Pliocene Epoch is of great importance. The Early Pliocene was characterized by warm climatic conditions, similar carbon dioxide levels and high sea levels compared to the present. This time frame provides essential information on the foreseeable future of Earth’s cryosphere, particularly if climate change continues to persist. The sedimentary record of the Antarctic Peninsula Ice Sheet (APIS) is the focus of this study. The electrophysiology of nodose ganglia neurons is of great interest in the analysis of cell membrane currents and action potential behavior. This behavior was initially outlined in the Hodgkin-Huxley conductance model [1] using a system of nonlinear differential equations. Later, Schild et al. [2] developed an extension of the Hodgkin-Huxley model to provide a more exhaustive description of ion channels involved in nodose neuronal action potential activity. Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis that primarily attacks the lungs. Drug resistance for M. tuberculosis is emerging and therefore new drug targets need to be identified. One way to target TB is through the inhibition of the tryptophan biosynthetic pathway of M. tuberculosis since production of tryptophan is essential for the replication of M. tuberculosis. The enzyme Indole-3-glycerol phosphate synthase (MtIGPS) was chosen as a potential drug target due to its role in tryptophan biosynthesis. SQL injection attacks are a significant threat to web application security, allowing attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands and gain unauthorized access to sensitive data. Static source code analysis is a widely used technique to identify security vulnerabilities in software, including SQL injection attacks. However, existing static source code scanners often produce false positives and require a high level of expertise to use effectively. When snow melts, the water drains into nearby streams and rivers which can impact water supply and flood hazards. The National Water Model (NWM) provides high quality forecast data for streamflow in the continental United States using mathematical representations of hydrologic processes. In this project, we investigate positive definite sequences and their associated Jacobi matrices in Hilbert space. We set out to determine the Jacobi matrix associated to the Hilbert sequence by methods described in Akhiezer’s book The Classical Moment Problem. Using methods in Teschl’s book Jacobi Operators and Completely Integrable Nonlinear Lattice, we determine the essential spectrum of the corresponding Jacobi matrix.

Observations by NASA Mars Global Surveyor showed evidence of rough topography on the South Pole of Mars. The topography is the result of CO2 sublimation processes that occur through the changing seasons on the red planet. These sublimation areas are known to scientists as Swiss Cheese Features (SCF). SCF are erosional degradation pits that have been studied for over two decades. Studies show that these SCF increase in area over time, but these values are collected by hand on a per feature basis. This dissertation presents three projects that investigate the complex phenomena of ferroelectricity under different conditions in BaTiO3, LiNbO3, and LiZnSb using first-principles density functional calculations. Extended defects in ferroelectric solids play a crucial role in reducing the lifetime and performance of ferroelectric devices by causing fatigue, domain pinning, and aging. Thus, understanding their impact is of critical importance for the development of reliable and high-performance ferroelectric devices. The Drosophila fruit fly is a well-established model organism for studying vision and neural perception. In this research, we focused on segmenting and analyzing photoreceptor cells in the Drosophila retina, specifically rhabdomeres. To facilitate our study, we acquired a comprehensive 3D dataset of Drosophila retina EM images and developed an automated segmentation pipeline using computer vision techniques. We evaluated the performance of our pipeline using automated metrics on Wild Type CS 1 and Nina D1 Mutant Drosophila datasets and prototyped a 3D model of segmented cells.
