A Comparative Study On Performance Of Iot-Driven Ml-Enabled Forecasting Models For Efficient Air Quality Monitoring, Bara Ksiksi
A Comparative Study On Performance Of Iot-Driven Ml-Enabled Forecasting Models For Efficient Air Quality Monitoring, Bara Ksiksi
Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses
Air pollution is one of the most important and devastating environmental issues that heavily affects public health around the world and it’s the cause of approximately 4.2 million early deaths. This thesis focuses on further improving forecasting models by introducing a zonal approach and satellite-based spatial validation. The main objective is to explore a zonal approach with the ground station data and to add a spatial component using satellite imagery to improve the accuracy of the results. It follows a four-stage evolution framework while focusing on the three different zones chosen. The four stages introduced different aspects which include a …
Drainage Proximity And Sinkhole Occurrence In Sivrihisar (Central Turkey): A Comparative Analysis Of Linear, Poisson, And Negative Binomial Regression Models, Bilge Bingül, Emrah Pekkan, Resul Çömert
Drainage Proximity And Sinkhole Occurrence In Sivrihisar (Central Turkey): A Comparative Analysis Of Linear, Poisson, And Negative Binomial Regression Models, Bilge Bingül, Emrah Pekkan, Resul Çömert
International Journal of Speleology
This study investigates the relationship between sinkhole occurrence and distance to drainage in the Sivrihisar region (Central Turkey) and evaluates the suitability of different regression approaches for modeling clustered count data in karst terrains. A comprehensive inventory of 104 sinkholes developed within the Neogene lacustrine limestones of the Akpınar Formation was compiled using official records, remote sensing analyses, and detailed field surveys. Sinkhole occurrences were analyzed relative to a drainage network derived from a high-resolution Digital Surface Model and grouped by proximity to drainage lines. Linear Regression (LM), Poisson Regression (PR), and Negative Binomial Regression (NBR) models were comparatively applied …
Limitations Of Signature-Based Network Intrusion Detection Under Modern Traffic Conditions, Henry Guidry
Limitations Of Signature-Based Network Intrusion Detection Under Modern Traffic Conditions, Henry Guidry
Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase
Network Intrusion Detection Systems are tools used to monitor network traffic and alert to suspicious or harmful activity before it can cause harm. Signature-based versions of these systems are a foundation for intrusion detection, operating by finding common patterns and forming malicious signatures. However, three developments in modern network environments have greatly impacted the significance of Network Intrusion Detection Systems. These three developments are the near-complete adoption of end-to-end encryption, the use of sophisticated packet fragmentation techniques, and the processing demands of high-throughput networks. Encryption makes deep packet inspection practically infeasible by transforming inspectable payloads into ciphertext, forcing NIDS to …
The Efficacy Of Manganese Sulfate As A Negative Contrast Agent For Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography, Zainab Abdulla Mankhi
The Efficacy Of Manganese Sulfate As A Negative Contrast Agent For Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography, Zainab Abdulla Mankhi
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
The current study aims to find an alternate oral contrast media for use in magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) that satisfies the following criteria, the greatest imaging quality safety, no or few side effects, and low cost. The present study created an oral contrast agent sample (solution) by dissolving a one tablet of manganese sulfate supplement (taken daily dose) in 200 ml of distilled water. Thirty-three volunteers assessed the sample using MRCP examine pre and post contrast. By evaluating the signal intensity to compute contrast (C), signal to noise ratios (SNR), and contrast to noise ratio (CNR), the resulting MR images …
Stylemys Nebrascensis Predation Hypothesis, Noah Lohrmeyer, Amanda Peng
Stylemys Nebrascensis Predation Hypothesis, Noah Lohrmeyer, Amanda Peng
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
In 2008 a fossilized tortoise shell was brought into the Sternberg Museum of Natural History. As we prepared the fossil, we observed markings that resembled predation. We are trying to find what species from the White River Formation could preyed on the tortoise. There are few publications on predation for this species. With few publications, we want to find what predator would hunt these species. We cross referenced the site of the tortoise and observed several carnivorous species. We used straight carapace length (Hermanson et al., 2024) and a regression formula (Wilson et al., 2016) to analyze the species we …
Mumm Vs. Minium: A Tale Of Two Quarries, Kale Link, Amanda Peng
Mumm Vs. Minium: A Tale Of Two Quarries, Kale Link, Amanda Peng
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
In 2025, a discrepancy was discovered in the field numbers of a selection of mammal fossils, which had been mistakenly catalogued as originating from the Minium Quarry in Graham County, KS instead of the Mumm Quarry in Rawlins County, KS. While both quarries belong to the Ogallala Formation, they demonstrate differing biostratigraphic ages, faunal assemblages, and taphonomic settings. Mumm is Clarendonian aged, while Minium is Hemphillian. To correct this issue, all the Mumm specimens were assigned to an updated locality with more precise geographic and biostratigraphic data.

Developing Strategies For Pce Outreach, Mariah Blankenbaker, Gordon Carlson, Daniel Adesoji, Levi Eck
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
In collaboration with Professional and Continuing Education (PCE), we produced projects to automate their internal tasks, as well as to promote their services. By taking advantage of software techniques, we bridged live-action footage with 2D and 3D computer visuals for promotional material. In addition, we researched the capabilities of creating a custom Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) and trained it to analyze and interact with thousands of industry datapoints.

Flood Frequency Analysis Of Big Creek, Ryan S. Funai, Jason T. Santoli, Gunnar F. Wainscott, Callen Zurn
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
The primary purpose of flood frequency analysis is to determine a timeframe of potential flood events. Analyzing flood frequency is a process that involves collecting years of quantitative data on discharge rates, calculating the probability of exceeding a certain rate of discharge, and calculating the average interval between events equaling or exceeding a certain rate of discharge. The Big Creek Watershed drainage area covers an area of 549 square miles in Western Kansas, including Ellis, Trego, Gove, and Sheridan Counties. This research analyzes 79 years of data collected by the USGS at the intersection of Big Creek and US-183. Water …

Exploring Ancestral Enzymes Through Sequence Reconstruction And Stability Prediction, Jeyun Park, Masakatsu Watanabe
Exploring Ancestral Enzymes Through Sequence Reconstruction And Stability Prediction, Jeyun Park, Masakatsu Watanabe
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Proteins evolve through sequence changes that shape structure, stability,
and function. Ancestral sequence reconstruction (ASR) infers ancestral
proteins from modern homologs, but many studies focus on sequence
inference without evaluating structural or energetic feasibility.
β-lactamases provide an ideal model due to their evolutionary diversity and
clinical relevance in antibiotic resistance.
Here, we present an integrated ASR workflow combining phylogenetic
inference (IQ-TREE), ancestral reconstruction, and structural and stability
validation using AlphaFold and FoldX. By reanalyzing a curated β-
lactamase dataset and comparing with a recent study (Risso et al., 2013),
we provide a controlled comparison of ancestral sequences, predicted
structures, and …
Fhsu Western Kansas Regional Water Quality Study, Gunnar F. Wainscott
Fhsu Western Kansas Regional Water Quality Study, Gunnar F. Wainscott
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
This study, conducted by Fort Hays State University faculty and graduate students, aims to analyze water quality through systematic sampling and analysis of wells, ponds, and streams across the region. Each sample is analyzed for a suite of eighteen parameters, such as arsenic, lead, nitrate, etc. By combining laboratory results with spatial data, this project seeks to identify regional patterns, establish a foundation for future monitoring efforts, and provide participating landowners with clear, accessible information about their own water quality.
Fractals Exploration Through Computer Visualization, Sihui Wei
Fractals Exploration Through Computer Visualization, Sihui Wei
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
This project explores the generation and visualization of fractals using computational methods. Several well-known fractal structures, including the Koch Snowflake, Sierpinski Triangle, Mandelbrot Set, and Julia Set, were implemented using C++ and the SFML graphics library.
The study focuses on how simple mathematical rules, when applied recursively or iteratively, can produce highly complex and self-similar structures. For geometric fractals, recursive algorithms were used to subdivide shapes and generate patterns. For complex-plane fractals, iterative formulas were applied pixel-by-pixel to determine set membership and visualize escape behavior.
The results demonstrate that small changes in parameters, such as recursion depth or iteration count, …
A Computational Study Of Taylor Approximation, Sihui Wei
A Computational Study Of Taylor Approximation, Sihui Wei
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
This project investigates the accuracy of Taylor approximation using computational methods. Taylor polynomials of degree 1, 3, and 5 were applied to the functions e^x, sin x, and ln(1+x), all centered at x=0.
Using C++, we generated both numerical data and graphical visualizations to analyze the absolute error∣f(x)−Tn(x)∣. The results show that higher-degree polynomials provide better approximation near the expansion point, while the error increases as the distance from the center grows.
In addition, the study reveals that the effectiveness of Taylor approximation depends not only on the polynomial degree but also on the structure of the function. In particular, …
