Association Of Lockdown Policies With Covid-19 Early Case Growth Rates In The United States, Anna Barefield Aug 2023

Association Of Lockdown Policies With Covid-19 Early Case Growth Rates In The United States, Anna Barefield

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted essentially the entire globe, infecting over 755 million people worldwide and resulting in over 6.8 million deaths to date. Different countries have had varying levels of success in managing the spread of the pandemic, and the success or lack thereof could be explained by the impact of government intervention, such as lockdown policies, mask mandates, and social distancing advisories. The United States responded particularly poorly to the early pandemic outbreak as compared to other similar countries, due to its lack of coordinated planning to implement effective policies, with large variations in action taken by each …

Risk Assessment And Solutions For Two Domains: Election Procedures And Privacy Disclosure Prevention For Users, Kamryn Deann Parker Aug 2023

Risk Assessment And Solutions For Two Domains: Election Procedures And Privacy Disclosure Prevention For Users, Kamryn Deann Parker

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Risk is something that surrounds us each and every day, and learning how to manage risk in different areas is necessary to limit its impact. Two different areas of risk have been identified for this thesis: election day incident infrastructure and user privacy disclosure prevention. We ask if it is possible to leverage information related to risk to create procedures that handle it as an overall issue in order to apply procedures to similar areas of research. Understanding how to identify and prevent these potential areas of risk is important to secure information not just for a single person, but …

Core States Of Neutron Stars From Anatomizing Their Scaled Structure Equations, Bao-Jun Cai, Bao-An Li, Zen Zhang

Faculty Publications

Given an Equation of State (EOS) for neutron star (NS) matter, there is a unique mass–radius sequence characterized by a maximum mass MNS max at radius Rmax. We first show analytically that the MNS max and Rmax scale linearly with two different combinations of the NS central pressure Pc and energy densityεc, by dissecting perturbatively the dimension less Tolman–Oppenheimer–Volkoff (TOV) equations governing NS internal variables. The scaling relations are then verified via 87 widely used and rather diverse phenomenological as well as 17 microscopic NS EOSs with/without considering hadron–quark phase transitions and hyperons, by solving numerically the original TOV equations. …

This dissertation aims to provide a modeling framework for studying the variation of wind speed and wind direction. To this end, three projects are conducted to address some of the key issues for modeling wind vectors.\\

First, a conditional decomposition approach is developed to model the joint distribution of wind speed and direction. Specifically, the …

Phase Distribution Of Nickel, Chromium, And Cobalt In Seawater At Olivine-Enriched Beaches: Implications For Carbon Capture By Enhanced Silicate Weathering, Nathaniel J. Padrnos Aug 2023

Phase Distribution Of Nickel, Chromium, And Cobalt In Seawater At Olivine-Enriched Beaches: Implications For Carbon Capture By Enhanced Silicate Weathering, Nathaniel J. Padrnos

Master's Theses

The application of olivine to coastal areas is a proposed method of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere for climate change mitigation. Olivine is abundant and dissolves relatively fast, but it contains trace amounts of nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr), and cobalt (Co) which may be toxic to marine biota in cases of widespread coastal olivine spreading. Prior studies have suggested that Ni concentrations in marine sediments and/or the overlying water column due to olivine dissolution could be a limiting factor for its carbon capture potential. Therefore, it is critical to understand and model the processes affecting trace metal bioavailability after …

Study Of Highly Charged Ion Charge Exchange With Applications To X-Ray Astrophysics, Richard Mattish

All Dissertations

Highly charged ions (HCIs) exist in many hot astrophysical environments where they play an important role in plasma dynamics. Charge exchange involving highly charged ions has been shown to be responsible for many observed X-ray emissions from a variety of astrophysical sources. Proper modeling of these environments requires an understanding of this process, including the electronic structure of each ion species as well as their charge exchange cross sections. This dissertation investigates charge exchange processes with highly charged ions which are present in astrophysical environments via a laboratory-based study.

The Clemson University electron beam ion trap (CUEBIT) laboratory was utilized …

Asymptotic Cones Of Quadratically Defined Sets And Their Applications To Qcqps, Alexander Joyce Aug 2023

Asymptotic Cones Of Quadratically Defined Sets And Their Applications To Qcqps, Alexander Joyce

All Dissertations

Quadratically constrained quadratic programs (QCQPs) are a set of optimization problems defined by a quadratic objective function and quadratic constraints. QCQPs cover a diverse set of problems, but the nonconvexity and unboundedness of quadratic constraints lead to difficulties in globally solving a QCQP. This thesis covers properties of unbounded quadratic constraints via a description of the asymptotic cone of a set defined by a single quadratic constraint. A description of the asymptotic cone is provided, including properties such as retractiveness and horizon directions.

Using the characterization of the asymptotic cone, we generalize existing results for bounded quadratically defined regions with …

A Method For Generating A Non-Manual Feature Model For Sign Language Processing, Robert G. Smith Dr, Markus Hofmann Dr

Articles

While recent approaches to sign language processing have shifted to the domain of Machine Learning (ML), the treatment of Non-Manual Features (NMFs) remains an open question. The principal challenge facing this method is the comparatively small sign language corpora available for training machine learning models. This study produces a statistical model which may be used in future ML, rules-based, and hybrid-learning approaches for sign language processing tasks. In doing so, this research explores the emerging patterns of non-manual articulation concerning grammatical classes in Irish Sign Language (ISL). The experimental method applied here is a novel implementation of an association rules …

The Upper Jurassic Galice Formation, a metasedimentary unit in the Western Klamath Mountains, formed within an intra-arc basin prior to and during the Nevadan orogeny. New detrital zircon U-Pb age analyses (N = 11; n = 2792) yield maximum depositional ages (MDA) ranging from ca. 160 Ma to 151 Ma, which span Oxfordian to Kimmeridgian time and overlap Nevadan contractional deformation that began by ca. 157 Ma. Zircon ages indicate a significant North American continental provenance component that is consistent with tectonic models placing the Western Klamath terrane on the continental margin in Late Jurassic time. Hf isotopic analysis of …

Structural And Kinematic Investigation Of The Dadeville Complex-Brevard Zone Contact (Southern Appalachians): Polyphase Emplacement Of An Allochthonous Terrane On The Laurentian Margin, Andrew Williams

Master's Theses

The Dadeville Complex (DC) lies in the Inner Piedmont of eastern Alabama and western Georgia. The DC formed as a volcanic island arc during the Taconic orogeny (Ordovician Period) and was accreted onto Laurentia during the Acadian orogeny (Devonian-Mississippian Periods); however, the mechanism and role of accretion during the Acadian orogeny is not well constrained. Three proposed emplacement mechanisms for the DC include: (1) orogen-perpendicular translation; (2) orogen-parallel translation; (3) orogenic channel flow.

Today, the DC is a major (over 100 kilometers long) allochthonous terrane composed mostly of meta-igneous rocks. This study investigated structural fabrics and kinematic indicators in the …

We integrated a mechanistic wildfire simulation system with an agent-based landscape change model to investigate the feedbacks among climate change, population growth, development, landowner decision-making, vegetative succession, and wildfire. Our goal was to develop an adaptable simulation platform for anticipating risk-mitigation tradeoffs in a fire-prone wildland– urban interface (WUI) facing conditions outside the bounds of experience. We describe how five social and ecological system (SES) submodels interact over time and space to generate highly variable alternative futures even within the same scenario as stochastic elements in simulated wildfire, succession, and landowner decisions create large sets of unique, path-dependent futures for …

Exploring The Presence Of Nonlinear Deterministic Dynamics In Commodity Prices, Sagar Dahal Aug 2023

Exploring The Presence Of Nonlinear Deterministic Dynamics In Commodity Prices, Sagar Dahal

Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Determining whether commodity prices (and volatility) are driven by linear stochastic processes or low-dimensional nonlinear deterministic dynamics (“chaos”) is crucial for policymaking, forecasting, production, storage, investment, risk management, and hedging decisions. Previous studies that used Lyapunov exponents and correlation dimensions to identify chaotic structures in price series may be unreliable in practical applications because these methods rely on asymptotic properties that require large, noiseless data which is often not available. We applied nonlinear time series analysis approaches to empirically detect the underlying market dynamics using the daily futures prices of ten agricultural commodities. We used phase space reconstruction to reconstruct …

Evaluating How Well Active Fault Mapping Predicts Earthquake Surface-Rupture Locations, Chelsea Scott, Ramon Arrowsmith, Rachel Adam, Christopher Madugo, Joseph Powell, John Ford, Brian Gray, Ashley Streig, Multiple Additional Authors

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Earthquake surface-fault rupture location uncertainty is a key factor in fault displacement hazard analysis and informs hazard and risk mitigation strategies. Geologists often predict future rupture locations from fault mapping based on the geomorphology interpreted from remote-sensing data sets. However, surface processes can obscure fault location, fault traces may be mapped in error, and a future rupture may not break every fault trace. We assessed how well geomorphology-based fault mapping predicted surface ruptures for seven earthquakes: 1983 M 6.9 Borah Peak, 2004 M 6.0 Parkfield, 2010 M 7.2 El Mayor–Cucapah, 2011 M 6.7 Fukushima-Hamadori, 2014 M 6.0 South Napa, 2016 …

Evaluating Learning Geometric Concepts To Generate Predicate Abstract Domains In Static Program Analysis, Patrick Chadbourne Aug 2023

Evaluating Learning Geometric Concepts To Generate Predicate Abstract Domains In Static Program Analysis, Patrick Chadbourne

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Accuracy of static analysis over predicate abstract domains depends on the partitions of predicates. More precise predicates approximate concrete values of program variables resulting in more accurate analysis. Manual reasoning about these partitions must be done on a case-by-case basis and is time consuming and difficult.

This work explores learning geometric concepts to automate discovery of predicate domain candidates.

The proposed framework uses run-time data from program executions to gather training data for a PAC-learner to generate separating hyperplanes that can be projected onto predicate domains.

The thesis implements the framework and performs evaluations of it effectiveness on a set …
