Can Gulf Ribbed Mussels Enhance Coastal Restoration Projects In A Future With Climate Change?, Skylar Liner
Can Gulf Ribbed Mussels Enhance Coastal Restoration Projects In A Future With Climate Change?, Skylar Liner
LSU Master's Theses
Living shorelines present one restoration approach using biotic elements (via ecosystem engineers) to stabilize shorelines and increase valuable habitat. Gulf ribbed mussels (Geukensia granosissima) are important ecosystem engineers within brackish and salt marshes in the northern Gulf of Mexico, and can increase nutrient availability, enhance marsh vegetation production, and potentially improve shoreline stability. It is unknown whether mussels will maintain these functions as future climate change predicts increases in temperature and water level, which may exceed the mussel’s tolerance. A field survey conducted during the summer of 2022 identified the daily maximum temperature at the marsh surface, where mussels naturally …
Cloning A Fusion Gene For The Identification Of The Proteins Contained In Ubiquitin-Rich Condensates, Grace M. Whitehead
Cloning A Fusion Gene For The Identification Of The Proteins Contained In Ubiquitin-Rich Condensates, Grace M. Whitehead
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Cellular liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) is a mechanism by which membraneless organelles such as polyubiquitinated condensates form and function. A non-receptor tyrosine kinase, Tnk1, binds to the polyubiquitin of polyubiquitinated condensates that are labeled for the proteasome for autophagy through its ubiquitin association (UBA) domain. This tyrosine kinase has links to a subset of hematological cancers, so identifying the protein contents within polyubiquitinated condensates is essential for understanding their significance in cancer pathways and to eventually identify potential therapeutic targets. This honors thesis focuses on the cloning of a fusion gene, pcDNA3.1 mNeonGreen–V5–UBA, as well as its deactivated L36D variant, …

We report the first detection of a TeV γ-ray flux from the solar disk (6.3σ), based on 6.1 years of data from the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory. The 0.5-2.6 TeV spectrum is well fit by a power law, dN/dE=A(E/1 TeV)-γ, with A=(1.6±0.3)x10-12 TeV-1 cm-2 s-1 and γ=3.62±0.14. The flux shows a strong indication of anticorrelation with solar activity. These results extend the bright, hard GeV emission from the disk observed with Fermi-LAT, seemingly due to hadronic Galactic cosmic rays showering on nuclei in the solar atmosphere. However, current theoretical models are unable to explain the details of how solar …

Developing Strategies For The Integration Of Metal–Organic Frameworks (Mofs) Into E-Textiles For Chemical Sensing, Filtration, And Detoxification, Aileen Mary Eagleton
Developing Strategies For The Integration Of Metal–Organic Frameworks (Mofs) Into E-Textiles For Chemical Sensing, Filtration, And Detoxification, Aileen Mary Eagleton
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline porous materials that offer modularity through diverse combinations of metal nodes and linkers, as well as tailorable surface chemistry and structure, along with tunable conductivity. The integration of these framework materials onto fibers can result in robust and flexible MOF-based textiles with enhanced functionality and applicability. This thesis illustrates the versatility of multifunctional MOF-integrated textile systems, showcasing their unique properties and the advantages of installing MOFs at the fiber level.

One of the most well-studied exoplanets to date, HD 189733 b, stands out as an archetypal hot Jupiter with many observations and theoretical models aimed at characterizing its atmosphere, interior, host star, and environment. We report here on the results of an extensive campaign to observe atmospheric escape signatures in HD 189733 b using the Hubble Space Telescope and its unique ultraviolet capabilities. We have found a tentative, but repeatable in-transit absorption of singlyionized carbon (C ii, 5.2% ± 1.4%) in the epoch of June–July/2017, as well as a neutral hydrogen (H i) absorption consistent with previous observations. We model …

Between Spring 2022 and Spring 2023, a team of researchers at Boise State University conducted interviews with people involved in farmland protection efforts. Our goal was to understand how interviewees frame the issue of farmland loss. Frames can draw attention to an issue, contextualize decision-making, and influence the policy solutions considered. Through a frame analysis, we gained a clearer understanding of potential approaches for farmland protection in Idaho.
We conducted 10 semi-structured interviews with individuals representing government agencies, academic institutions, land trusts, non-profit organizations, and farmers. After conducting the interviews, we analyzed the transcripts in a systematic manner to identify …

The legal research course is over a century old. As a law school subject, it predates many doctrinal courses, as well as the advent of clinical legal education. It is several decades older than its sister subject, legal writing. In spite of its age and obvious importance, the place of the legal research course in the law school curriculum remains contested. While some law faculties recognize the value of legal research instruction and require a standalone legal research course in the first year, the vast majority combine it with legal writing (often over the objections of legal writing instructors and …

In this study, we systematically examine the conformational dynamics, binding and allosteric communications in the Omicron BA.1, BA.2, BA.3 and BA.4/BA.5 spike protein complexes with the ACE2 host receptor using molecular dynamics simulations and perturbation-based network profiling approaches. Microsecond atomistic simulations provided a detailed characterization of the conformational landscapes and revealed the increased thermodynamic stabilization of the BA.2 variant which can be contrasted with the BA.4/BA.5 variants inducing a significant mobility of the complexes. Using the dynamics-based mutational scanning of spike residues, we identified structural stability and binding affinity hotspots in the Omicron complexes. Perturbation response scanning and network-based mutational …

Cookie(X) = 1/2, Lawrence M. Lesser
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
This poem applies the concept of expected value, denoted E(X), to the context of any limited resources two parties desire. Usually, "you divide, I choose" keeps pieces equal enough to preempt charges of unfairness. But if one piece is much larger, many distrust the unbiased (in expected value) process of a coin flip giving each person the same chance at the bigger piece and the same cookie amount on average: E(X) = (1/2)p + (1/2)(1-p) = 1/2
