The Role Of Leading-Edge Serrations In Controlling The Flow Over Owls’ Wing, Tanner Saussaman, Asif Nafi, David Charland, Hadar Ben-Gida, Roi Gurka
Physics and Engineering Science
We studied the effects of leading-edge serrations on the flow dynamics developed over an owl wing model. Owls are predatory birds. Most owl species are nocturnal, with some active during the day. The nocturnal ones feature stealth capabilities that are partially attributed to their wing microfeatures. One of these microfeatures is small rigid combs (i.e. serrations) aligned at an angle with respect to the incoming flow located at the wings' leading-edge region of the primaries. These serrations are essentially passive flow control devices that enhance some of the owls' flight characteristics, such as aeroacoustics and, potentially, aerodynamics. We performed a …

On Subset Labelings Of Trees, Gary Chartrand, Ebrahim Salehi, Ping Zhang
Mathematical Sciences Faculty Research
For a nontrivial graph G, a subset labeling of G is a labeling of the vertices of G with nonempty subsets of the set [r]={1, 2, ... , r} for a positive integer r such that two vertices of G have disjoint labels if and only if the vertices are adjacent. The subset index ρ(G) of G is the minimum positive integer r for which G has such a subset labeling from the set [r]. If T is a tree of diameter d, then ρ(Pd+1) ≤ ρ(T). It is shown that there are several classes of trees T of diameter …

Chlorogenic acid esterases (ChlEs) are a useful class of enzymes that hydrolyze chlorogenic acid (CGA) into caffeic and quinic acid. ChlEs can break down CGA in foods to improve their sensory properties and release caffeic acid in the digestive system to improve the absorption of bioactive compounds. This work presents the structure, molecular dynamics, and biochemical characterization of a ChlE from Lactobacillus helveticus (Lh). Molecular dynamics simulations suggest that substrate access to the active site of LhChlE is modulated by two hairpin loops above the active site. Docking simulations and mutational analysis suggest that two residues within …

We Designed A Board Game About The Future Of New York City!, Richard Reiss
Sustainability Seminar Series
Rapid, human-induced climate change presents a crisis that involves everyone, yet few people feel they have any influence or ability to change seemingly unstoppable events. City Atlas developed a cooperative game, Energetic, to teach anyone in the US – or around the world – how to practice fixing climate change with accurate, updatable information, scaling from a 2.5 hour game to a month long workshop, matched to the region in which they live. The game for NYC is now used at Carnegie Mellon, Harvard, Brown, Vanderbilt, and Bronx Science, and at Con Ed and the NYS Dept of Energy. City …

Poly(Propylene Glycol)-Based Non-Isocyanate Polyurethane Ionenes: Thermal, Morphological And Conductive Properties, Jordan C. Pierce, George M. Timmermann, Creston Singer, David Salas-De La Cruz, Kevin Miller
Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity
The synthesis and characterization of a series of polyurethane ionenes using a non-isocyanate approach is disclosed. Imidazole-capped, urethane-containing prepolymers are prepared by first reacting carbonyl diimidazole (CDI) with several poly(propylene glycol) (PPG) diols with variable molecular weight, followed by subsequent reaction with 3-aminopropylimidazole (API). Polymerization with 1,4-dibromomethylbenzene followed by anion exchange resulted in the desired polyurethane ionenes bearing the [NTf2] counteranion as a series of viscous liquids. NMR and FTIR spectroscopy are used to characterize the intermediates and final ionenes, including molecular weight determination by end-group analysis. A single glass transition temperature (Tg), as determined by differential scanning …

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications
Magnetism and spin-orbit coupling are two fundamental and interconnected properties of oxide materials, that can give rise to various topological transport phenomena, including anomalous Hall and anomalous Nernst effects. These transport responses can be significantly enhanced by designing an electronic structure with a large Berry curvature. In this context, rocksalt-ordered double perovskites (DP), denoted as A2BB’O6, with two distinct transition metal sites are very powerful platforms for exploration and research. In this work, we present a comprehensive study based on the intrinsic anomalous transport in cubic and tetragonal stable DP compounds with 3d-4d/5d elements. Our findings …

Efficiency is essential to support responsiveness w.r.t. ever-growing datasets, especially for Deep Learning (DL) systems. DL frameworks have traditionally embraced deferred execution-style DL code—supporting symbolic, graph-based Deep Neural Network (DNN) computation. While scalable, such development is error-prone, non-intuitive, and difficult to debug. Consequently, more natural, imperative DL frameworks encouraging eager execution have emerged at the expense of run-time performance. Though hybrid approaches aim for the "best of both worlds," using them effectively requires subtle considerations to make code amenable to safe, accurate, and efficient graph execution. We present our ongoing work on automated refactoring that assists developers in specifying whether …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Growing regulatory requirements set barriers around genetic data sharing and collaborations. Moreover, existing privacy-aware paradigms are challenging to deploy in collaborative settings. We present COLLAGENE, a tool base for building secure collaborative genomic data analysis methods. COLLAGENE protects data using shared-key homomorphic encryption and combines encryption with multiparty strategies for efficient privacy-aware collaborative method development. COLLAGENE provides ready-to-run tools for encryption/decryption, matrix processing, and network transfers, which can be immediately integrated into existing pipelines. We demonstrate the usage of COLLAGENE by building a practical federated GWAS protocol for binary phenotypes and a secure meta-analysis protocol. COLLAGENE is available at https://zenodo.org/record/8125935 …

We present the results from a multiyear radio campaign of the superluminous supernova (SLSN) SN 2017ens, which yielded the earliest radio detection of an SLSN to date at the age of ∼3.3 yr after explosion. SN 2017ens was not detected at radio frequencies in the first ∼300 days but reached Lν ≈ 1028 erg s−1 cm−2 Hz−1 at ν ∼ 6 GHz, ∼1250 days post explosion. Interpreting the radio observations in the context of synchrotron radiation from the supernova shock interaction with the circumstellar medium (CSM), we infer an effective mass-loss rate Ṁ ≈ 10 …

Identifying trends between observational data and the range of physical parameters of massive stars is a critical step to the still-elusive full understanding of the source, structure, and evolution of X-ray emission from the stellar winds, requiring a substantial sample size and systematic analysis methods. As of 2022, the Chandra data archive contains 37 high-resolution spectra of O, B, and WR stars, observed with the Chandra/HETGS, and of sufficient quality to fit the continua and emission-line profiles. Using a systematic approach to the data analysis, we explore morphological trends in the line profiles (i.e., O, Ne, Mg, and Si) and …

Multiple Structural And Functional Annotations Based In-Silico Characterization Of Q9brx8 Protein, Eiman Zahid, Muhammad Farhan Sarwar
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
Numerous proteins found in humans are poorly understood because there is a dearth of experimental evidence. Hypothetical proteins (HPs) or uncharacterized proteins are the terms used to describe these proteins. In this work, one of these proteins, Q9BRX8, is investigated using in-silico or bioinformatics tools to reveal its significant properties. In this regard, NCBI for the sequence retrieval, ProtParam tool for analysis of physiochemical properties, SOPMA for secondary structure prediction, SWISS-Model for homology modelling, STRING for protein-protein interaction and HDOCK for protein-protein docking analysis among other tools, were incorporated. The physiochemical characteristics indicated that Q9BRX8, which has an instability score …

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
In our daily life, most problems stem from the wrong decisions. Similarity measures (SMs) are very helpful in making good decisions. In this paper, distinct similarities of Pythagorean Neutrosophic Hypersoft Sets (PNHSSs) and its properties are presented. Finally, the proposed SMs applied for converting plastic waste into energy source problems. Comparing various suggested similarities makes decision-making simple, easy, and accurate.

A Comparative Analysis Of Proactive And Reactive Methods For Privacy-Aware Interleaved Dnn Offloading, Jamie Cotter
Department of Computer Science Publications
Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) are increasingly used on the edge in mobile and other resource-constrained devices for inference tasks ranging from object detection and image recognition to video processing. Many of these tasks have low latency requirements that cannot be satisfied if they are processed locally due to their high computational complexity. Offloading computation to the edge and cloud offers a way to alleviate this computational latency. Doing so introduces communication delays, which makes offloading a balancing act between the benefits of reduced processing time and the communication delays incurred. Existing algorithms for DNN offloading based on DNN partitioning are …

Electron As A Structure Made Of Basic Elementary Particles: Spinning Speed And Radius, Polievkt Perov
College of Arts & Sciences Faculty Works
We have calculated the orbital speed, the radius of an orbit of the revolving basic particles, and the angular speed of an electron in three models of an electron as a spinning composite particle. The three models suggested in our previous work [1] are the centered square structure, the rhombus structure, and the tetrahedral structure. The calculated speed of revolving basic particles, for all three models of an electron, does not exceed c, the maximum possible speed in nature: for the centered square model, in the rhombus model, and in the tetrahedral model. The results show that the spin of …

Investigations On Copper Assisted Oxidative Transformations For The Construction Of Diverse C-C/C-N(O) Bonds, Prasanna Kumari S
Theses and Dissertations
Copper catalyzed C-C, C-N/C-O bond formation reactions are a prominent tool to access diverse biologically relevant molecules. Herein, we present the copper- catalyzed diverse C-C/C-N(O) bond forming reactions. In Chapter-I (introduction), we briefly discussed the various copper mediated organic transformations with appropriate examples.
In Chapter II, we report a one-pot methodology for the vicinal aminoalkylation of naphthoquinone through a direct C(sp2)-H functionalization reaction. Through this method, readily available planar naphthoquinone substrates were transformed into three-dimensional molecular scaffolds through the formation of one C(sp2)-C(sp2) and two C(sp2)-N bonds. The indole fused nitrogen heterocyclic products were obtained in good yields. Apart from …

New Perspectives On Semi-Primal Varieties, Alexander Kurz, Wolfgang Poiger, Bruno Teheux
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
We study varieties generated by semi-primal lattice-expansions by means of category theory. We provide a new proof of the Keimel-Werner topological duality for such varieties and, using similar methods, establish its discrete version. We describe multiple adjunctions between the variety of Boolean algebras and the variety generated by a semi-primal lattice-expansion, both on the topological side and explicitly algebraic. In particular, we show that the Boolean skeleton functor has two adjoints, both defined by taking certain Boolean powers, and we identify properties of these adjunctions which fully characterize semi-primality of an algebra. Lastly, we give a new characterization of canonical …

Multicultural education is about teaching people about each other without bias. Banks, C. (2016) states “Teachers need to understand their students’ community and home life (pg. 278).” As teachers it is our duty to ensure that every student that enters our classroom leaves with a sense of worth and knowing that each of them matter regardless of ethnicity, religion, gender or cultural.

This study compares four different hypotheses regarding the nature of the Priestley–Taylor parameter α. They are as follows:
- α is a universal constant.
- The Bowen ratio (H/LE, where H is the sensible heat flux, and LE is the latent heat flux) for equilibrium (i.e., saturated air column near the surface) evaporation is a constant times the Bowen ratio at minimal advection (Andreas et al., 2013).
- Minimal advection over a wet surface corresponds to a particular relative humidity value.
- α is a constant fraction of the difference from the minimum value of 1 to the maximum value of α …

Background: K-complex detection plays a significant role in the field of sleep research. However, manual annotation for electroencephalography (EEG) recordings by visual inspection from experts is time-consuming and subjective. Therefore, there is a necessity to implement automatic detection methods based on classical machine learning algorithms. However, due to the complexity of EEG signal, current feature extraction methods always produce low relevance to k-complex detection, which leads to a great performance loss for the detection. Hence, finding compact yet effective integrated feature vectors becomes a crucially core task in k-complex detection. Method: In this paper, we first extract multi-domain features based …

A Neutrosophic Approach For B-Spline Curve By Using Interpolation Method, Siti Nur Idara Binti Rosli, Mohammad Izat Emir Bin Zulkifly
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
This study introduces a B-spline curve interpolation model based on the neutrosophic set technique. To begin, the neutrosophic notion is used to define the neutrosophic control point relation. After that, the neutrosophic control point is combined with the B-spline basis function. Besides, the neutrosophic B-spline curve interpolation model is illustrated using the interpolation method. Furthermore, an example and the methods are shown for creating the right curve.
