Phosphorus Dynamics In Calcareous Soils Amended With Organic Matter, Logan Banner Dec 2023

Phosphorus Dynamics In Calcareous Soils Amended With Organic Matter, Logan Banner

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present

Phosphorus (P) is considered immobile in calcareous soils. Organic matter is known to enhance P mobility in these soils. Few studies have considered what role iron oxides might play in P sorption in calcareous soils, especially in the presence of soluble organic matter. This study investigated P sorption dynamics in sand-based, simulated soil systems in the absence or presence of 5 mM carbon (C) as humic acid (HA). Treatments included combinations of dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD), calcite, and ferrihydrite. Solutions containing 10 mg P L-1 in a background of 0.01 M CaCl2were equilibrated with each solid treatment …

Impacts Of Disturbance And Nutrient Addition On Coastal Dune Arthropod Communities, Kayla Beitzel Dec 2023

Impacts Of Disturbance And Nutrient Addition On Coastal Dune Arthropod Communities, Kayla Beitzel

Honors Theses

Coastal dune ecosystems are globally distributed ecosystems that occur from the tropics to the poles and serve as the first line of defense during storms. They are critical habitats for a variety of organisms and also play a critical role in stabilizing coastal habitats. These systems face increased pressure via urban development, recreational expansion, and sea-level rise (Newman et al. 2023; Webster et al. 2005). Insects are vital consumers in coastal ecosystems and act as regulators of plant growth. Low-diversity ecosystems, like coastal dune systems, often contain a higher abundance of low-diverse insect consumers (Ripple et al. 2021), which can …

Ensuring Non-Repudiation In Long-Distance Constrained Devices, Ethan Blum Dec 2023

Ensuring Non-Repudiation In Long-Distance Constrained Devices, Ethan Blum

Honors Theses

Satellite communication is essential for the exploration and study of space. Satellites allow communications with many devices and systems residing in space and on the surface of celestial bodies from ground stations on Earth. However, with the rise of Ground Station as a Service (GsaaS), the ability to efficiently send action commands to distant satellites must ensure non-repudiation such that an attacker is unable to send malicious commands to distant satellites. Distant satellites are also constrained devices and rely on limited power, meaning security on these devices is minimal. Therefore, this study attempted to propose a novel algorithm to allow …

Estimation Of Angular Response Curves Using A Phase Differencing Bathymetric Sonar, Kandice Gunning Dec 2023

Estimation Of Angular Response Curves Using A Phase Differencing Bathymetric Sonar, Kandice Gunning

Master's Theses

Although Multibeam Echosounders (MBES) backscatter products like Angular Response Curves (ARC) and mosaics have been used and applied to different sediment types as classification tools, little is known about the extraction and interpretation of ARCs using Phase Differencing Bathymetric Sonar Systems (PDBS). This thesis aims to use an across-track approach to develop a method for extracting ARCs from georeferenced bathymetric data using PDBS.

Three different data collection surveys were conducted using a PDBS operating at 540kHz. Using only the bathymetric data, initial ARCs from 3 different intensity classes (high, medium, and low) were successfully extracted, the results of which attempted …

Bayesian Learning Of Spatiotemporal Source Distribution For Beached Microplastic In The Gulf Of Mexico, David Pojunas Dec 2023

Bayesian Learning Of Spatiotemporal Source Distribution For Beached Microplastic In The Gulf Of Mexico, David Pojunas

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Over the last several decades, plastic waste has gradually accumulated while slowly degrading in terrestrial and oceanic environments. Recently, there has been an increased effort to identify the possible sources of plastic to understand how they affect vulnerable beaches. This issue is of particular concern in the Gulf of Mexico due to the presence of oil, natural gas, and plastic production. In this thesis, we expand upon existing Bayesian plastic attribution models and develop a rigorous statistical framework to map observed beached microplastics to their sources. Within this framework, we combine Lagrangian backtracking simulations of floating particles using nurdle beaching …

Costs Of Wind Erosion In The Northern Agricultural Region, Anne Bennett Dec 2023

Costs Of Wind Erosion In The Northern Agricultural Region, Anne Bennett

Natural resources published reports

Summary

  • To date, the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development’s (DPIRD) estimated opportunity cost of wind erosion for Western Australia’s (WA) agricultural region has only included the costs of forgone production income and therefore underestimates the broader costs of wind erosion events.
  • This underestimation of costs was the impetus to create a case study to give an indication of the magnitude of the costs of wind erosion from agricultural land.
  • Farmers in the Northern Agricultural Region (NAR) were contacted to seek information about the on-farm costs of wind erosion events that occurred in 2020. Seventeen farmers responded to the …

Serum amyloid A (SAA) is a family of proteins, the plasma levels of which may increase >1000-fold in acute inflammatory states. We investigated the role of SAA in sepsis using mice deficient in all three acute-phase SAA isoforms (SAA-TKO). SAA deficiency significantly increased mortality rates in the three experimental sepsis mouse models: cecal ligation and puncture (CLP), cecal slurry (CS) injection, and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) treatments. SAA-TKO mice had exacerbated lung pathology compared to wild-type (WT) mice after CLP. A bulk RNA sequencing performed on lung tissues excised 24 h after CLP indicated significant enrichment in the expression of genes associated …

New Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient Methods For Some Structured Problems In Physics, Tianqi Zhang

All Dissertations

This dissertation concerns the development and analysis of new preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) algorithms for three important classes of large-scale and complex physical problems characterized by special structures. We propose several new iterative methods for solving the eigenvalue problem or energy minimization problem, which leverage the unique structures inherent in these problems while preserving the underlying physical properties. The new algorithms enable more efficient and robust large-scale modeling and simulations in many areas, including condensed matter physics, optical properties of materials, stabilities of dynamical systems arising from control problems, and many more. Some methods are expected to be applicable to …

An Investigation Of The Accretion Processes In T Tauri And Herbig Ae/Be Systems Using High Resolution Optical And Near-Infrared Spectroscopy, Joshua Kern Dec 2023

An Investigation Of The Accretion Processes In T Tauri And Herbig Ae/Be Systems Using High Resolution Optical And Near-Infrared Spectroscopy, Joshua Kern

All Dissertations

Star and planet formation is intimately tied to the accretion of material from the environments in which they form. During the formation process, disks of gas and dust develop in young stellar objects through which material is facilitated to the star and forming planets. Theoretical models of these accretion processes invoke viscous spreading via hydrodynamics, as well as more complex interactions with magnetic fields be it from the stellar component or the formation environment in order to catalyze these mass flows. These accretion models predict various scenarios including magnetospheric accretion as well as supersonic accretion flows in the disk atmosphere …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Towards addressing the concerns of conventional power systems including reliability and security, establishing modern Smart Grids (SGs) has been given much attention by the global electric utility applications during the last few years. One of the key advantageous of SGs is its ability for two-way communication and bi-directional power flow that facilitates the inclusion of distributed energy resources, real time monitoring and self-healing systems. As such, the SG employs a large number of digital devices that are installed at various locations to enrich the observability and controllability of the system. This calls for the necessity of employing Internet of Things …

Substantial Blue Carbon Sequestration In The World’S Largest Seagrass Meadow, Chuancheng Fu, Sofia Frappi, Michelle N. Havlik, Wells Howe, S. David Harris, Elisa Laiolo, Austin J. Gallagher, Pere Masqué, Carlos M. Duarte Dec 2023

Substantial Blue Carbon Sequestration In The World’S Largest Seagrass Meadow, Chuancheng Fu, Sofia Frappi, Michelle N. Havlik, Wells Howe, S. David Harris, Elisa Laiolo, Austin J. Gallagher, Pere Masqué, Carlos M. Duarte

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Seagrass meadows are important sinks for organic carbon and provide co-benefits. However, data on the organic carbon stock in seagrass sediments are scarce for many regions, particularly The Bahamas, which accounts for up to 40.7% of the documented global seagrass area, limiting formulation of blue carbon strategies. Here, we sampled 10 seagrass meadows across an extensive island chain in The Bahamas. We estimate that Bahamas seagrass meadows store 0.42–0.59 Pg organic carbon in the top-meter sediments with an accumulation rate of 2.1–2.9 Tg annually, representing a substantial global blue carbon hotspot. Autochthonous organic carbon in sediments decreased from ~1980 onwards, …

Through The Lens Of A Naturalist: How Learning About Nature Promotes Nature Connectedness Via Awe, Shu Tian Ng, Angela K. Y. Leung, Sarah Hian May Chan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Environmental educators stress the importance of engaging with the wonders of the Earth in promoting nature connectedness. However, it remains unclear if learning about nature has an incremental effect beyond mere exposure to nature and what psychological mechanism can explain such a learning effect if it exists. To fill this gap, we propose a mediation model in which learning about nature promotes a sense of awe—a self-transcendent emotion associated with the recognition of vastness in nature. A sense of awe, in turn, promotes nature connectedness. Study 1 employed a cross-sectional survey and offered preliminary support for the proposed model, with …

Role Of Authentication Factors In Fin-Tech Mobile Transaction Security, Habib Ullah Khan, Muhammad Sohail, Shah Nazir, Tariq Hussain, Babar Shah, Farman Ali

All Works

Fin-Tech is the merging of finance and technology, to be considered a key term for technology-based financial operations and money transactions as far as Fin-Tech is concerned. In the massive field of business, mobile money transaction security is a great challenge for researchers. The user authentication schemes restrict the ability to enforce the authentication before the account can access and operate. Although authentication factors provide greater security than a simple static password, financial transactions have potential drawbacks because cybercrime expands the opportunities for fraudsters. The most common enterprise challenge is mobile-based user authentication during transactions, which addresses the security issues …

Learning Heterogeneous Subgraph Representations For Team Discovery, Radin Hamidi Rad, Hoang Nguyen, Feras Al-Obeidat, Ebrahim Bagheri, Mehdi Kargar, Divesh Srivastava, Jaroslaw Szlichta, Fattane Zarrinkalam

All Works

The team discovery task is concerned with finding a group of experts from a collaboration network who would collectively cover a desirable set of skills. Most prior work for team discovery either adopt graph-based or neural mapping approaches. Graph-based approaches are computationally intractable often leading to sub-optimal team selection. Neural mapping approaches have better performance, however, are still limited as they learn individual representations for skills and experts and are often prone to overfitting given the sparsity of collaboration networks. Thus, we define the team discovery task as one of learning subgraph representations from a heterogeneous collaboration network where the …

On Hierarchical Clustering-Based Approach For Rddbs Design, Hassan I. Abdalla, Ali A. Amer, Sri Devi Ravana

All Works

Distributed database system (DDBS) design is still an open challenge even after decades of research, especially in a dynamic network setting. Hence, to meet the demands of high-speed data gathering and for the management and preservation of huge systems, it is important to construct a distributed database for real-time data storage. Incidentally, some fragmentation schemes, such as horizontal, vertical, and hybrid, are widely used for DDBS design. At the same time, data allocation could not be done without first physically fragmenting the data because the fragmentation process is the foundation of the DDBS design. Extensive research have been conducted to …

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Miocene Columbia River Basalt Group (CRBG) of the Pacific Northwest of the United States is the world’s youngest and smallest large igneous province. Its earliest formations are the Imnaha, Steens, and now the Picture Gorge Basalt (PGB), and they were sourced from three different dike swarms exposed from SE Washington to Nevada to northcentral Oregon. PGB is often viewed to be distinct from the other formations, as its magmas are sourced from a shallow, relatively depleted, and later subduction-induced metasomatized mantle, along with its young stratigraphic position. It has long been known that the lowermost American Bar flows (AB1&2) …

Tidal marshes store large amounts of organic carbon in their soils. Field data quantifying soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks provide an important resource for researchers, natural resource managers, and policy-makers working towards the protection, restoration, and valuation of these ecosystems. We collated a global dataset of tidal marsh soil organic carbon (MarSOC) from 99 studies that includes location, soil depth, site name, dry bulk density, SOC, and/or soil organic matter (SOM). The MarSOC dataset includes 17,454 data points from 2,329 unique locations, and 29 countries. We generated a general transfer function for the conversion of SOM to SOC. Using this …

Vegetated Coastal Ecosystems In The Southwestern Atlantic Ocean Are An Unexploited Opportunity For Climate Change Mitigation, Vanessa Hatje, Margareth Copertino, Vinicius F. Patire, Ximena Ovando, Josiah Ogbuka, Beverly J. Johnson, Hilary Kennedy, Pere Masque, Joel C. Creed

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Vegetated coastal ecosystems (mangroves, seagrasses, and saltmarshes, often called Blue Carbon ecosystems) store large carbon stocks. However, their regional carbon inventories, sequestration rates, and potential as natural climate change mitigation strategies are poorly constrained. Here, we systematically review organic carbon storage and accumulation rates in vegetated coastal ecosystems across the Central and Southwestern Atlantic, extending from Guyana (08.28°N) to Argentina (55.14°S). We estimate that 0.4 Pg organic carbon is stored in the region, which is approximately 2-5% of global carbon stores in coastal vegetated systems, and that they accumulate 0.5 to 3.9 Tg carbon annually. By ecosystem type, mangroves have …

Gut Microbial Communities Of Hybridising Pygmy Angelfishes Reflect Species Boundaries, Megan J. Huggett, Jean-Paul A. Hobbs, Federico Vitelli, Michael Stat, Tane H. Sinclair-Taylor, Michael Bunce, Joseph D. Dibattista

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Hybridisation and introgression of eukaryotic genomes can generate new species or subsume existing ones, with direct and indirect consequences for biodiversity. An understudied component of these evolutionary forces is their potentially rapid effect on host gut microbiomes, and whether these pliable microcosms may serve as early biological indicators of speciation. We address this hypothesis in a field study of angelfishes (genus Centropyge), which have one of the highest prevalence of hybridisation within coral reef fish. In our study region of the Eastern Indian Ocean, the parent fish species and their hybrids cohabit and display no differences in their diet, behaviour, …

Applications Of Survival Estimation Under Stochastic Order To Cancer: The Three Sample Problem, Sage Vantine Dec 2023

Applications Of Survival Estimation Under Stochastic Order To Cancer: The Three Sample Problem, Sage Vantine

Honors Program Theses and Research Projects

Stochastic ordering of probability distributions holds various practical applications. However, in real-world scenarios, the empirical survival functions extracted from actual data often fail to meet the requirements of stochastic ordering. Consequently, we must devise methods to estimate these distribution curves in order to satisfy the constraint. In practical applications, such as the investigation of the time of death or the progression of diseases like cancer, we frequently observe that patients with one condition are expected to exhibit a higher likelihood of survival at all time points compared to those with a different condition. Nevertheless, when we attempt to fit a …

Wastewater Treatment Plants: The Missing Link In Global One-Health Surveillance And Management Of Antibiotic Resistance, Abdolmajid Gholizadeh, Mehdi Khiadani, Maryam Foroughi, Hadi Alizade Siuki, Hadi Mehrfar

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Introduction: As a global public health crisis, antibiotic resistance (AR) should be monitored and managed under the One-Health concept according to the World Health Organization (WHO), considering the interconnection between humans, animals, and the environment. But this approach often remains focused on human health and rarely on the environment and its compartments, especially wastewater as the main AR receptor. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) not only are not designed for reliving AR but also provide appropriate conditions for enhancing AR through different mechanisms. Methods: By reviewing the research-based statistics on the inclusion of WWTPs in the One-Health/AR program crisis, this paper …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The soil in terrestrial and coastal blue carbon ecosystems is an important carbon sink. National carbon inventories require accurate assessments of soil carbon in these ecosystems to aid conservation, preservation, and nature-based climate change mitigation strategies. Here we harmonise measurements from Australia’s terrestrial and blue carbon ecosystems and apply multi-scale machine learning to derive spatially explicit estimates of soil carbon stocks and the environmental drivers of variation. We find that climate and vegetation are the primary drivers of variation at the continental scale, while ecosystem type, terrain, clay content, mineralogy and nutrients drive subregional variations. We estimate that in the …

Computational Investigations Of Bond Breaking Processes Using Dft And Td-Dft Approaches., Saurav Parmar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The efficient application of DFT and TD-DFT has been harnessed to study bond-breaking processes in some molecules which play a prominent role in enzymatic reactions. The first application includes Radical S-adenosyl methionine (SAM) enzymes which are fundamentally important sources of organic radicals to initiate diverse radical reactions. Recently a bio-organometallic intermediate (Ω) that contains an Fe‒C bond has been characterized and shown to be a common feature of radical SAM enzymes. The strength of Fe‒C bond in Ω has been computed using broken-symmetry density functional theory (BS‒DFT). Additionally, Fe‒C bond dissociation energy (BDE) in Ω has been compared to that …
