An Innovative Restoration Mode “Macrophytes–Fishes–Benthons–Birds” Implemented In Aesthetic Plateau Wetlands, Junxing Yang, Xiaoai Wang, Xiaofu Pan, Yuanwe Zhang, Heqi Wu, Anli Wu
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Affected by both increasing human activities and climate change, Yunnan Plateau lakes were faced with threats such as water level decreasing, water-body reducing, and severe pollution. Many indigenous species were endangered or even disappeared. The ecological restorations implemented since 1980s almost all used alien species. As an inevitable result, severe negative impacts from alien species were observed on the Plateau wetland ecosystem and indigenous species. To solve these problems, with the support of relevant projects, an innovative restoration mode mainly with indigenous flag-species “macrophytes – fishes – benthons – birds” was proposed. This innovative mode was implemented respectively in Dianchi …

Taking Science To The Streets: Participatory Research Approaches To Improve Environment, Health, And Quality Of Life In Urban Areas, Na'taki Osborne Jelks
Sustainability Seminar Series
Environmental justice communities, those disproportionately affected by pollutants, are simultaneously exposed to multiple environmental stressors and also experience social and cultural factors that may heighten their health risks in comparison to other communities. Availability of fine-grained, community-level data is limited to support said communities’ appeals for public health practice, planning, and policy changes. In Northwest Atlanta, Georgia’s Proctor Creek Watershed community residents (watershed researchers), academics, and non-profit organizations have leveraged local, community knowledge; community science methods; and participatory approaches to identify, document, and analyze the impacts of local environmental hazards and quality of life stressors. This highly collaborative and interdisciplinary …

Social Justice Mathematics: Classroom Practices That Give Students Rigor While Building Agency, Emily Marquise
Masters Theses (Archived)
The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of a social justice approach to mathematics instruction. While many students have math aversion, students in low socioeconomic communities exhibit this to a higher degree putting them at a disadvantage as they progress through their educational career. More than 3.4 million K-12 students in the United States come from families that earn less than the median income yet achieve scores in the top percentile (Wyner et al., 2007). This raises the question of why so many students in low-socioeconomic settings are not given rigorous content that will keep them competitive …
Improving The Quality Of Micronutrient Food Composition Data In Sub-Saharan Africa Using Predictive Analytics, Junior Mbuyamba Muka
Improving The Quality Of Micronutrient Food Composition Data In Sub-Saharan Africa Using Predictive Analytics, Junior Mbuyamba Muka
Theses and Dissertations
High-quality food composition data are indispensable for decision making in several health, agricultural, and nutrition-related activities. Analytical data are the most accurate type of food composition data (FCD). Yet, most food composition databases (FCDBs) compiled in Sub-Saharan Africa only contain a small amount of analytical data collected from foods consumed in this region. Most of the data are either borrowed / copied from FCDBs collected in other parts of the world, calculated, imputed, or presumed data. Even with these alternative types, FCDBs in Sub-Saharan Africa have not reached a satisfactory level of completeness, as they still have missing data for …

Understanding The Origin, Evolution, And Dynamics Of Transneptunian Binaries, Benjamin C N Proudfoot
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation discusses research that focuses on understanding transneptunian objects (TNOs) using a variety of techniques and approaches. In Chapter 1, I introduce the main concepts used throughout this dissertation and discuss the current understanding of the transneptunian region. In Chapter 2, I discuss my efforts to understand how Neptune's late stages of migration affect the Haumea family, the only known collisional family in the transneptunian region. Using advanced simulations of Neptune migration, I find that the Haumea family can plausibly form before the termination of giant planet migration and show that this extensively mixes the family. The simplest explanation …

Ungrading: Reflections Through A Feminist Pedagogical Lens, Erin M. Eggleston, Shelby Kimmel
Ungrading: Reflections Through A Feminist Pedagogical Lens, Erin M. Eggleston, Shelby Kimmel
Feminist Pedagogy
Ungrading is a pedagogical approach in which no grades are given on any assignments. Instead, students are provided with many opportunities to submit work and gain feedback. The goal is to shift student focus from achieving a grade to growth as a learner and a person. As instructors, our ungrading approach utilized personalized learning plans, checkpoint reflections, and student-professor learning conferences to put agency in the hands of our students. We employed this method in upper-level biology and computer science courses and provide critical reflections here regarding our experiences and the connections between this approach and feminist STEM pedagogy tenets. …

Centering Equity In Stem Teaching: Stem Ideas That Change The World, Ileana Vasu
Feminist Pedagogy
No discussion on equity/inequity makes sense without bringing power into that discussion. As instructors we need to ask questions such as “who decides and controls what knowledge is”, “whose identities are empowered and whose are erased”, “who has access and opportunity and who doesn’t”. Traditional teaching in STEM, including mathematics, assumes knowledge is objective, transmittable, repeatable to everyone. When educators follow a traditional curriculum, just like their teachers before them, they do so thinking their methods ensure equality and objectivity. These practices not only deny the role that Western patriarchal cultures have played in creating these so-called equitable practices, but …

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) have become an exciting technology that provides a fresh perspective on asset ownership, provenance, and value exchange. NFTs, a blockchain-based technology, are distinct and indivisible cryptographic tokens used to confirm and record the ownership of digital and physical assets in an immutable and transparent way. The fundamental block of NFT is a smart contract built on a blockchain network. This contract contains specific information about the asset it represents, such as its unique identifier, metadata, and ownership details. The information is kept private and tamper-proof due to the decentralized and distributed structure of the blockchain, boosting faith …
Progress Towards The Development Of Asymmetric Conditions For Intramolecular Heteroatom/Dehydro-Diels-Alder Reactions For Synthesizing Furo[3,4-C] Pyranones And Anticancer Podophyllotoxins, Peter Mpaata
Theses and Dissertations
Furo[3,4-c] pyranone is a unique bicyclic molecular structure found in bioactive sesquiterpene isobolivianine and in artificial cytotoxic stilbene derivatives. The structure of furo[3,4-c] pyranone is analogous to cyclopenta[c] pyran structure found in potent cytotoxic iridoids like catapol. Chiral substrates for intramolecular hetero-Diels-Alder (IHDA) reaction have been synthesized in yields ranging from 39% to 81%. These compounds undergo [4+2] cycloaddition via ambimodal/ bispericyclic process to give a mixture of furo[3,4-c] pyranone in yields ranging 40-70% and aryl tetralin lactone derivatives. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been performed to gain insight into the mechanism leading to the formation of these compounds. …

Local Atomic And Magnetic Structure Of Multiferroic (Sr,Ba)(Mn,Ti)O3, Braedon Jones
Local Atomic And Magnetic Structure Of Multiferroic (Sr,Ba)(Mn,Ti)O3, Braedon Jones
Theses and Dissertations
We present a detailed study of the local atomic and magnetic structure of the type-I multiferroic perovskite system (Sr,Ba)(Mn,Ti)O3 using x-ray and neutron pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, polarized neutron scattering, and muon spin relaxation (μSR) techniques. The atomic PDF analysis reveals widespread nanoscale tetragonal distortions of the crystal structure even in the paraelectric phase with average cubic symmetry, corresponding to incipient ferroelectricity in the local structure. Magnetic PDF analysis, polarized neutron scattering, and μSR likewise confirm the presence of short-range antiferromagnetic correlations in the paramagnetic state, which grow in magnitude as the temperature approaches the magnetic transition. We show …
Mechanical Characterization Of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotube Forest Microelectrodes For Neural Interfacing, Spencer Mcleod Roberts
Mechanical Characterization Of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotube Forest Microelectrodes For Neural Interfacing, Spencer Mcleod Roberts
Theses and Dissertations
Silicon intracortical microelectrodes arrays (MEA) provide some of the best performance for brain computer interfaces but suffer from lifetime limitations that prevent clinical adoption. A primary contributor of lifetime limitations is the chronic foreign body response (FBR) which remains active in response to the brain tissue strain caused by implanted probes during brain micromotion. Designing probes with softer materials can reduce the chronic FBR and improve device lifetime. A high-aspect ratio CNT MEA could provide several advantages as an intracortical MEA but has yet to be mechanically characterized. CNT MEAs are infiltrated with 3 degrees of carbon infiltration and mechanically …

Consider a sequence (Xn)n≥1 of i.i.d. 2×2 stochastic matrices with each Xn distributed as μ. This μ is described as follows. Let (Cn,Dn)T denote the first column of Xn and for a given real r with 012 is very challenging. Considering the extreme nontriviality of this case, we stick to a very special such r, namely, r=√5−12 (the reciprocal of the golden ratio), briefly mention the challenges in this nontrivial case, and completely identify λ for a very special situation.
