Audio Census Of Some Wisconsin Game Birds, Donald R. Thompson, Charles W. Lemke Jan 1952

Audio Census Of Some Wisconsin Game Birds, Donald R. Thompson, Charles W. Lemke

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

Audio censuses of Wisconsin game birds were commenced in 1948, and now include the bobwhite quail, the pheasant and the ruffed grouse, in the order in which censuses were introduced.

Briefly, audio censuses are based on the characteristic sounds given by the male of the species concerned during the breeding season. An observer strategically located at a station, or stations in the field tallies the number of individuals calling, and/or the number of calls heard during a given time period.

In Wisconsin, only the transect method is used, with the observer following a given route and making listening stops of …

The Fluorescence Of Uranium In Solid Solution, Robert Emmett Kelly Jan 1952

The Fluorescence Of Uranium In Solid Solution, Robert Emmett Kelly

Masters Theses

"The fluorescence of uranium finds its greatest application in the so-called "bead test" which is a method of qualitative analysis. In the form of a bead, the uranium is in solid solution, and if the proper chemical solvent is used, the bead will fluoresce under ultraviolet radiation.

In the systematic separation of the metallic elements, uranium is associated with the aluminum group in that it is not precipitated by hydrogen sulfide in 0.3 N H ion but is precipitated by ammonium hydroxide and ammonium sulfide. In the analytical scheme, uranium acts like beryllium. This process of detection is sometimes tedious …

Geochemical Prospecting Applied To The Illinois-Kentucky Fluorspar Area, Matthew Peter Nackowski Jan 1952

Geochemical Prospecting Applied To The Illinois-Kentucky Fluorspar Area, Matthew Peter Nackowski

Doctoral Dissertations

"This study was completed to determine whether geochemical methods of prospecting could be applied to the search for fluorspar deposits in the Illinois-Kentucky fluorspar district.

During the course of the study, aspects of the geochemical cycle of fluorine under the climatic environment encountered were noted in the zone of weathering.

The Illinois-Kentucky fluorspar district supplies a large portion of the fluorite consumed in the United States. The producing deposits are of two geologic types. The vein deposits occur as nearly vertical tabular lenses or pods which occupy fractures. These deposits may reach the bedrock surface, but in any case, the …

Halogenated Epoxide-Phenol Reactions A Mechanism Study, Richard L. Rowton Jan 1952

Halogenated Epoxide-Phenol Reactions A Mechanism Study, Richard L. Rowton

Masters Theses

"The object of this investigation was to study the reactions of two other halogenated epoxides--namely, 3-bromo-1,2-epoxybutane and l-bromo-2,3-epoxybutane--with the phenolate ion, with the hope that the results obtained would shed additional light upon the mechanisms of such reactions. At the present time, no direct practical applications of the results can be forseen. However, the information gained will be a worthwhile addition to the vast existing store of knowledge already at our disposal, and might be of some help to future investigators"--Introduction, page 2.

The Partition Function Of Silver, Ralph H. Lilienkamp Jan 1952

The Partition Function Of Silver, Ralph H. Lilienkamp

Masters Theses

"The study of the thermodynamic properties of solids at low temperatures has shown that most theories either break down or become too cumbersome.

A theory based upon a crystal lattice of atoms gives the best physical picture of a solid. Fisher has developed partition functions from this theory for the simple cubic, body-centered cubic, and the face-centered cubic lattices. In his paper Fisher gave three partition functions of increasing complexity and accuracy for each of the three lattices. In this paper the three partition functions for a face-centered cubic lattice shall be applied to silver and compared.

Separation Of The Alkaline Earth Group By Means Of Paper Chromatography, Robert J. Martinovich Jan 1952

Separation Of The Alkaline Earth Group By Means Of Paper Chromatography, Robert J. Martinovich

Bachelors’ Theses

Since chromatography is beginning more and more to find its place in industry as an analytical tool, the author became interested in its theoretical and practical applications. This thesis was one phase of a project begun by Dr. John G. Surak, to introduce this type of analysis to the freshmen chemistry classes as a supplementary procedure to their regular methods.

A Statistical Comparison Of The Standard And The Modified Karl Fischer Reagents For Moisture Determination In Certain Compounds, Lowell E. Williams Jan 1952

A Statistical Comparison Of The Standard And The Modified Karl Fischer Reagents For Moisture Determination In Certain Compounds, Lowell E. Williams

Bachelors’ Theses

The Karl Fischer reagent may be used for the direct titration of water in liquids, solids, and gases, of either organic or inorganic compounds. Literature shows that the accurate determination of water is quite practical in nearly all classes of organic compounds. Unlike most of the other techniques, which usually are limited in applicability, the Fischer procedure may be adapted readily to quantitative analysis of samples, whose water content may vary from traces to nearly 100 per cent. The reagent, however, has a shortcoming, namely, it deteriorates rapidly. It has recently been suggested that if a two solution procedure were …

Separation Of The Ions Of Groups Iiia And Iiib By Means Of Paper Chromatography, Norman Leffler Jan 1952

Separation Of The Ions Of Groups Iiia And Iiib By Means Of Paper Chromatography, Norman Leffler

Bachelors’ Theses

Since chromatography, In view of its ever increasing importance, may some day largely replace the more traditional methods of qualitative analysis, this research has been aimed not only toward the establishment of a scheme of separation for the ions of group III, but also toward presenting and applying the theoretical principles and basic techniques of this comparatively young branch of analytical science.

The Determination Of Moisture In Active Dry Yeast, Richard F. Fenske Jan 1952

The Determination Of Moisture In Active Dry Yeast, Richard F. Fenske

Bachelors’ Theses

The writer, having been employed for the past three years, in the control laboratory of one of this country's largest yeast concerns, is very much interested in the determination of moisture in active dry yeast and has there tore made the investigation presented in this paper.

The moisture content is, of critical importance in the production of active dry yeast. A yeast whose moisture content is too low will have poor baking characteristics while a yeast whose moisture content is too high will have poor keeping quality. Inconsistent results have been obtained by using various methods to determine the moisture …

A Linear Polymer X-Ray Scattering Model, Bernard Cohen Jan 1952

A Linear Polymer X-Ray Scattering Model, Bernard Cohen

Masters Theses

"In the development of X-ray scattering intensity curves physical models are necessary for the theoretical mathematical development involved. The purpose of this paper is the development of a physical model suitable for X-ray diffraction analysis or a linear polymer.

X-ray intensity patterns may be used to give a greater insight as to the atomic structure, configuration or atoms, molecular weight, and therefore a greater knowledge of the structure of matter, both microscopic and macroscopic. The converse may sometimes be used. An atom or molecular model is constructed, from this model X-ray scattering curves may be derived. These curves may be …

Chalcones Derived From M-Nitroacetophenone, Richard Allan Hendry Jan 1952

Chalcones Derived From M-Nitroacetophenone, Richard Allan Hendry

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The object of this research was to prepare substituted derivatives of various chalcones having the nitro group substituted in the 31-position, the idea being to help complete the series of chalcones having the nitro group in that position. This was to be done by condensing various substituted benzaldehydes with m-nitroacetophenone, using dry hydrogen chloride as a condensing agent. The properties of the resulting chalcones were then to be determined by observing color reactions, spectra, and other general physical properties.

Aromatic Acetals : Their Synthesis And Alkylation, Robert Conner Gass Jan 1952

Aromatic Acetals : Their Synthesis And Alkylation, Robert Conner Gass

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to study the known methods of forming acetals and find one or several that could be used in further investigation. In connection with the reactions, the use of various catalysts was pertinent. Some of the catalysts used were hydrogen chloride, calcium chloride, ferric chloride, aromatic sulfonic acids, and other. There was no data available comparing the sulfonic acids with the inorganic salts and mineral acids. For that reason one of the subsidiary problems of this investigation was such a comparison.

In order to investigate stability, several acetals were subjected to conditions intended to produce …
