To The Torus And Beyond: An X-Ray Study Of Agn Tori Morphology, Andrealuna Pizzetti
To The Torus And Beyond: An X-Ray Study Of Agn Tori Morphology, Andrealuna Pizzetti
All Dissertations
Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are among the Universe's most energetic and powerful objects, fueled by an accreting supermassive black hole (SMBH) at the host galaxy's center, surrounded by a toroidal structure of dusty gas. Ultraviolet photons arising from the accretion disk get up-scattered to X-rays via inverse Compton scattering by hot electrons close to the accretion disk. Being produced in the very center of the AGN, X-ray photons are powerful messengers that probe the physics of the accretion system and the matter in the surroundings. The torus, formerly considered homogeneous, appears to be a more complex structure of clouds with …

All Dissertations
Ground-breaking advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have led to the possibility of AI agents operating not just as useful tools for teams, but also as full-fledged team members with unique, interdependent roles. This possibility is fueled by the human desire to create more and more autonomous systems that possess computational powers beyond human capability and the promise of increasing the productivity and efficiency of human teams dramatically. Yet, for all the promise and potential of these human-AI teams, the inclusion of AI teammates presents several challenges and concerns for both teaming and human-centered AI.
An important part of teaming is …
Oscillations Of Capillary Surfaces With Volume And Edge Effects, Dingqian Ding
Oscillations Of Capillary Surfaces With Volume And Edge Effects, Dingqian Ding
All Dissertations
Capillary surfaces are defined by an interface endowed with surface tension that is partially supported by a solid substrate and are susceptible to oscillations reflecting a balance between fluid inertia and the restorative force of surface tension. The wave dynamics strongly depend upon volume change within the domain and edge effects through the boundary conditions applied at the contact-line formed at the liquid-gas-solid interface, while the spatial wave structure conforms to the geometry of the capillary surface. This dissertation develops mathematical models to address these effects for several canonical capillary surfaces, which are organized into two parts that are focused …

Structure-Property Relationship Studies Of Electrically Conductive Metal-Organic Framework Materials, Shiyu Zhang
Structure-Property Relationship Studies Of Electrically Conductive Metal-Organic Framework Materials, Shiyu Zhang
All Dissertations
Electrically conductive metal-organic frameworks (EC-MOFs) are among the most promising materials due to their tunable structures, properties, and diverse functions. However, the lack of comprehensive understanding of their structure-property relationship hinders the development of EC-MOFs. My dissertation focuses on the design, construction, and structure-property relationship studies of EC-MOFs.
Chapter 1 describes how MOFs' structural features and compositions affect the electronic properties and demonstrates conductive mechanisms and the corresponding design strategies to develop EC-MOFs.
Chapter 2 describes the synthesis, characterization, electronic and optical properties of four novel alkali-metal-based (Na, K, Rb, and Cs) 3D-MOFs with continuous tetrathiafulvalene tetracarboxylate (TTFTC) π-stacks, systematicly …
Efficient Fully Bayesian Approaches To Brain Activity Mapping With Complex-Valued Fmri Data: Analysis Of Real And Imaginary Components In A Cartesian Model And Extension To Magnitude And Phase In A Polar Model, Zhengxin Wang
All Dissertations
Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) plays a crucial role in neuroimaging, enabling the exploration of brain activity through complex-valued signals. Traditional fMRI analyses have largely focused on magnitude information, often overlooking the potential insights offered by phase data, and therefore, lead to underutilization of available data and flawed statistical assumptions. This dissertation proposes two efficient, fully Bayesian approaches for the analysis of complex-valued functional magnetic resonance imaging (cv-fMRI) time series.
Chapter 2 introduces the model, referred to as CV-sSGLMM, using the real and imaginary components of cv-fMRI data and sparse spatial generalized linear mixed model prior. This model extends the …
Experimental Analyses Of Emission Lines In The Uv/Vis/Nir Range For Astrophysically-Important Elements: From The Iron Group To R-Process Elements, Brynna Neff
All Dissertations
Analysis of astrophysical phenomena requires an understanding of the electronic
structure and transition probabilities of the elements present in that environment,
yet there are still many charge states of heavy elements whose electronic
structures and spectroscopic properties are not yet well understood. To address this,
we investigated the spectroscopic properties of three different elements through an
analysis of spectra collected from three different experimental apparatuses.
In order to better understand the spectroscopic properties of Ni I and II, we
analyzed spectra collected from the Compact Toroidal Hybrid (CTH) apparatus at
Auburn University. In this experiment, a nickel sample was inserted …
Carbon "Quantum" Dots: Structures, Properties, And Issues, Weixiong Liang
Carbon "Quantum" Dots: Structures, Properties, And Issues, Weixiong Liang
All Dissertations
Carbon dots (CDots) are small carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) with effective surface passivation. The effective passivation has been achieved by the surface functionalization of pre-existing CNPs with organic molecules, mostly molecules containing primary or secondary amine moieties. In the studies highlighted in this dissertation, CNPs were functionalized by selected organic molecules, including especially the use of radical addition reactions, to generate CDots with strong absorption and bright fluorescence emissions. A good demonstration of the approach was the N-ethylcarbazole (NEC) radical addition to CNPs under microwave irradiation. Spectroscopy and microscopy methods were employed to characterize the resulting NEC-CDots, and the results …
Domain Decomposition Methods For Fluid-Structure Interaction Problems Involving Elastic, Porous, Or Poroelastic Structures, Hemanta Kunwar
Domain Decomposition Methods For Fluid-Structure Interaction Problems Involving Elastic, Porous, Or Poroelastic Structures, Hemanta Kunwar
All Dissertations
We introduce two global-in-time domain decomposition methods, namely the Steklov-Poincare method and Schwarz waveform relaxation (SWR) method using Robin transmission conditions (or the Robin method), for solving fluid-structure interaction systems involving elastic, porous, or poroelastic structure. These methods allow us to formulate the coupled system as a space-time interface problem and apply iterative algorithms directly to the evolutionary problem. Each time-dependent fluid and the structure subdomain problem is solved independently, which enables the use of different time discretization schemes and time step sizes in the subsystems. This leads to an efficient way of simulating time-dependent multiphysics phenomena. For the fluid-porous …
Affinity-Enhanced Microdialysis Using Covalent Organic Frameworks (Cofs) Applied To Various Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (Nsaids) And Their Metabolites, Kehinde Adedeji Olubanjo
Affinity-Enhanced Microdialysis Using Covalent Organic Frameworks (Cofs) Applied To Various Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (Nsaids) And Their Metabolites, Kehinde Adedeji Olubanjo
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Microdialysis is a valuable tool in neurosciences and pharmaceutical sciences, aiding research in drug-related areas. However, it faces a notable limitation in sampling hydrophobic analytes due to their adherence to the probe materials brought about by non-specific adsorption, thereby reducing relative recovery or overall extraction. In this work, two affinity agents, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) beads suspended in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant and covalent organic frameworks I(COFs) were employed as affinity agents in microdialysis for the extraction of hydrophobic drugs. When PDMS beads were employed as affinity agents, at the flow rate of 1 µL/min the relative recovery of both the …
Geomorphic Analysis Of The Lower Arkansas River, Usa, Matthew Edwards
Geomorphic Analysis Of The Lower Arkansas River, Usa, Matthew Edwards
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Arkansas River is one of several large and important river systems stretching from the Rocky Mountains to the Mississippi River. It meanders across the Great Plains for ~1000 km before plunging into a mountain-bound valley, confined by the Ozarks to the north and Ouachitas to the south. The geologic history of the Arkansas River is poorly understood and crudely constrained to sometime between ~60 Ma and 100 Ka. Questions remain concerning its path(s), potential integration of the upper and lower sections, and overall history. The combination of knickpoint and chi (χ) mapping, tributary grain size analysis, tensile strength testing, …
A Review Of Student Attitudes Towards Keystroke Logging And Plagiarism Detection In Introductory Computer Science Courses, Caleb Syndergaard
A Review Of Student Attitudes Towards Keystroke Logging And Plagiarism Detection In Introductory Computer Science Courses, Caleb Syndergaard
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
The following paper addresses student attitudes towards keystroke logging and plagiarism prevention measures. Specifically, the paper concerns itself with changes made to the “ShowYourWork” plugin, which was implemented to log the keystrokes of students in Utah State University’s introductory Computer Science course, CS1400. Recent work performed by the Edwards Lab provided insights into students’ feelings towards keystroke logging as a measure of deterring plagiarism. As a result of that research, we have concluded that measures need to be taken to enable students to have more control over their data and assist students to feel more comfortable with keystroke logging. This …

Vectors And Vector Borne Disease: Models For The Spread Of Curly Top Disease And Culex Mosquito Abundance, Rachel M. (Frantz) Georges
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Mathematical models are useful tools in managing infectious disease. When designed appropriately, these models can provide insight into disease incidence patterns and transmission rates. In this work, we present several models that provide information that is useful in monitoring diseases spread by insects.
In the first part of this dissertation, we present two models that predict disease incidence patterns for Curly Top disease (CT) in tomato crops. CT affects a wide variety of plants and is spread through the bite of the Beet Leafhopper. This disease is particularly devastating to tomato crops. When infected, tomato plants present with stunted growth …
The Gravitational Wave Peep: Improved Modeling Of Highly Eccentric Emris For Lisa Signal Confusion Noise, Daniel Joseph Oliver
The Gravitational Wave Peep: Improved Modeling Of Highly Eccentric Emris For Lisa Signal Confusion Noise, Daniel Joseph Oliver
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Scattering events around a massive black hole will occasionally toss a stellar-mass compact object into an orbit around the massive black hole, beginning an extreme mass ratio inspiral. The early stages of such a highly eccentric orbit will not produce detectable gravitational waves as the source will only be in a suitable frequency band briefly when it is close to periapsis during each long-period orbit. This burst of emission, firmly in the millihertz band, is the gravitational wave peep. While a single peep is not likely to be detectable, if we consider an ensemble of such subthreshold sources, spread across …
Derived Jet Schemes And Arc Spaces, And Arithmetic Arc Space Representability, C. Eric Overton-Walker
Derived Jet Schemes And Arc Spaces, And Arithmetic Arc Space Representability, C. Eric Overton-Walker
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Associated to a given scheme X one can define geometric and arithmetic notions of jet schemes and arc spaces. We develop a construction of the geometric jets and arcs in the setting of derived schemes and explore consequences thereof. In particular, we prove an analogous theorem to that of one by Tommaso de Fernex and Roi Docampo concerning the cotangent sheaves of geometric jets and arcs. Our version then produces many subsequent results which allow us to prove stronger versions of results concerning geometric jets and arcs by removing unnecessary hypotheses. Separately, we explore evidence as to why, in contrast …

While manual transcription tools exist, music enthusiasts, including amateur singers, still encounter challenges when transcribing performances into sheet music. This paper addresses the complex task of translating music audio into music sheets, particularly challenging in the intricate field of choral arrangements where multiple voices intertwine. We propose DLVS4Audio2Sheet, a novel method leveraging advanced deep learning models, Open-Unmix and Band-Split Recurrent Neural Networks (BSRNN), for vocal separation. DLVS4Audio2Sheet segments choral audio into individual vocal sections and selects the optimal model for further processing, aiming towards audio into music sheet conversion. We evaluate DLVS4Audio2Sheet’s performance using these deep learning algorithms and assess …
Exploring Diffusion Time-Steps For Unsupervised Representation Learning, Zhongqi Yue, Jiankun Wang, Qianru Sun, Lei Ji, Eric I-Chao Chang, Hanwang Zhang
Exploring Diffusion Time-Steps For Unsupervised Representation Learning, Zhongqi Yue, Jiankun Wang, Qianru Sun, Lei Ji, Eric I-Chao Chang, Hanwang Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Representation learning is all about discovering the hidden modular attributes that generate the data faithfully. We explore the potential of Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Model (DM) in unsupervised learning of the modular attributes. We build a theoretical framework that connects the diffusion time-steps and the hidden attributes, which serves as an effective inductive bias for unsupervised learning. Specifically, the forward diffusion process incrementally adds Gaussian noise to samples at each time-step, which essentially collapses different samples into similar ones by losing attributes, e.g., fine-grained attributes such as texture are lost with less noise added (i.e., early time-steps), while coarse-grained ones such …
Automatic Grading Of Short Answers Using Large Language Models In Software Engineering Courses, Nguyen Binh Duong Ta, Yi Meng Chai
Automatic Grading Of Short Answers Using Large Language Models In Software Engineering Courses, Nguyen Binh Duong Ta, Yi Meng Chai
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Short-answer based questions have been used widely due to their effectiveness in assessing whether the desired learning outcomes have been attained by students. However, due to their open-ended nature, many different answers could be considered entirely or partially correct for the same question. In the context of computer science and software engineering courses where the enrolment has been increasing recently, manual grading of short-answer questions is a time-consuming and tedious process for instructors. In software engineering courses, assessments concern not just coding but many other aspects of software development such as system analysis, architecture design, software processes and operation methodologies …
Learning Multi-Faceted Prototypical User Interests, Nhu Thuat Tran, Hady W. Lauw
Learning Multi-Faceted Prototypical User Interests, Nhu Thuat Tran, Hady W. Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We seek to uncover the latent interest units from behavioral data to better learn user preferences under the VAE framework. Existing practices tend to ignore the multiple facets of item characteristics, which may not capture it at appropriate granularity. Moreover, current studies equate the granularity of item space to that of user interests, which we postulate is not ideal as user interests would likely map to a small subset of item space. In addition, the compositionality of user interests has received inadequate attention, preventing the modeling of interactions between explanatory factors driving a user's decision. To resolve this, we propose …

Unraveling The ‘Anomaly’ In Time Series Anomaly Detection: A Self-Supervised Tri-Domain Solution, Yuting Sun, Guansong Pang, Guanhua Ye, Tong Chen, Xia Hu, Hongzhi Yin
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The ongoing challenges in time series anomaly detection (TSAD), including the scarcity of anomaly labels and the variability in anomaly lengths and shapes, have led to the need for a more robust and efficient solution. As limited anomaly labels hinder traditional supervised models in anomaly detection, various state-of-the-art (SOTA) deep learning (DL) techniques (e.g., self-supervised learning) are introduced to tackle this issue. However, they encounter difficulties handling variations in anomaly lengths and shapes, limiting their adaptability to diverse anomalies. Additionally, many benchmark datasets suffer from the problem of having explicit anomalies that even random functions can detect. This problem is …

Non-Vacuous Generalization Bounds For Adversarial Risk In Stochastic Neural Networks, Mustafa Waleed, Liznerski Philipp, Antoine Ledent, Wagner Dennis, Wang Puyu, Kloft Marius
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Adversarial examples are manipulated samples used to deceive machine learning models, posing a serious threat in safety-critical applications. Existing safety certificates for machine learning models are limited to individual input examples, failing to capture generalization to unseen data. To address this limitation, we propose novel generalization bounds based on the PAC-Bayesian and randomized smoothing frameworks, providing certificates that predict the model’s performance and robustness on unseen test samples based solely on the training data. We present an effective procedure to train and compute the first non-vacuous generalization bounds for neural networks in adversarial settings. Experimental results on the widely recognized …

Towards Explainable Harmful Meme Detection Through Multimodal Debate Between Large Language Models, Hongzhan Lin, Ziyang Luo, Wei Gao, Jing Ma, Bo Wang, Ruichao Yang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The age of social media is flooded with Internet memes, necessitating a clear grasp and effective identification of harmful ones. This task presents a significant challenge due to the implicit meaning embedded in memes, which is not explicitly conveyed through the surface text and image. However, existing harmful meme detection methods do not present readable explanations that unveil such implicit meaning to support their detection decisions. In this paper, we propose an explainable approach to detect harmful memes, achieved through reasoning over conflicting rationales from both harmless and harmful positions. Specifically, inspired by the powerful capacity of Large Language Models …

Collaborative Deep Reinforcement Learning For Solving Multi-Objective Vehicle Routing Problems, Yaoxin Wu, Mingfeng Fan, Zhiguang Cao, Ruobin Gao, Yaqing Hou, Guillaume Sartoretti
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Existing deep reinforcement learning (DRL) methods for multi-objective vehicle routing problems (MOVRPs) typically decompose an MOVRP into subproblems with respective preferences and then train policies to solve corresponding subproblems. However, such a paradigm is still less effective in tackling the intricate interactions among subproblems, thus holding back the quality of the Pareto solutions. To counteract this limitation, we introduce a collaborative deep reinforcement learning method. We first propose a preference-based attention network (PAN) that allows the DRL agents to reason out solutions to subproblems in parallel, where a shared encoder learns the instance embedding and a decoder is tailored for …
Analyzing And Revivifying Function Signature Inference Using Deep Learning, Yan Lin, Trisha Singhal, Debin Gao, David Lo
Analyzing And Revivifying Function Signature Inference Using Deep Learning, Yan Lin, Trisha Singhal, Debin Gao, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Function signature plays an important role in binary analysis and security enhancement, with typical examples in bug finding and control-flow integrity enforcement. However, recovery of function signatures by static binary analysis is challenging since crucial information vital for such recovery is stripped off during compilation. Although function signature recovery using deep learning (DL) is proposed in an effort to handle such challenges, the reported accuracy is low for binaries compiled with optimizations. In this paper, we first perform a systematic study to quantify the extent to which compiler optimizations (negatively) impact the accuracy of existing DL techniques based on Recurrent …

Learning Adversarial Semantic Embeddings For Zero-Shot Recognition In Open Worlds, Tianqi Li, Guansong Pang, Xiao Bai, Jin Zheng, Lei Zhou, Xin Ning
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Zero-Shot Learning (ZSL) focuses on classifying samples of unseen classes with only their side semantic information presented during training. It cannot handle real-life, open-world scenarios where there are test samples of unknown classes for which neither samples (e.g., images) nor their side semantic information is known during training. Open-Set Recognition (OSR) is dedicated to addressing the unknown class issue, but existing OSR methods are not designed to model the semantic information of the unseen classes. To tackle this combined ZSL and OSR problem, we consider the case of “Zero-Shot Open-Set Recognition” (ZS-OSR), where a model is trained under the ZSL …

An Evaluation Of Heart Rate Monitoring With In-Ear Microphones Under Motion, Kayla-Jade Butkow, Ting Dang, Andrea Ferlini, Dong Ma, Yang Liu, Cecilia Mascolo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
With the soaring adoption of in-ear wearables, the research community has started investigating suitable in-ear heart rate detection systems. Heart rate is a key physiological marker of cardiovascular health and physical fitness. Continuous and reliable heart rate monitoring with wearable devices has therefore gained increasing attention in recent years. Existing heart rate detection systems in wearables mainly rely on photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors, however, these are notorious for poor performance in the presence of human motion. In this work, leveraging the occlusion effect that enhances low-frequency bone-conducted sounds in the ear canal, we investigate for the first time in-ear audio-based motion-resilient …

With the widespread use of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, malware detection has become a hot spot for both academic and industrial communities. Existing approaches can be roughly categorized into network-side and host-side. However, existing network-side methods are difficult to capture contextual semantics from cross-source traffic, and previous host-side methods could be adversary-perceived and expose risks for tampering. More importantly, a single perspective cannot comprehensively track the multi-stage lifecycle of IoT malware. In this paper, we present CMD, a co-analyzed IoT malware detection and forensics system by combining hardware and network domains. For the network part, CMD proposes a tailored …

Vibmilk: Non-Intrusive Milk Spoilage Detection Via Smartphone Vibration, Yuezhong Wu, Wei Song, Yanxiang Wang, Dong Ma, Weitao Xu, Mahbub Hassan, Wen Hu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Quantifying the chemical process of milk spoilage is challenging due to the need for bulky, expensive equipment that is not user-friendly for milk producers or customers. This lack of a convenient and accurate milk spoilage detection system can cause two significant issues. First, people who consume spoiled milk may experience serious health problems. Secondly, milk manufacturers typically provide a “best before” date to indicate freshness, but this date only shows the highest quality of the milk, not the last day it can be safely consumed, leading to significant milk waste. A practical and efficient solution to this problem is proposed …

Instant3d: Instant Text-To-3d Generation, Ming Li, Pan Zhou, Jia-Wei Liu, Jussi Keppo, Shuicheng Yan, Xiangyu Xu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Text-to-3D generation has attracted much attention from the computer vision community. Existing methods mainly optimize a neural field from scratch for each text prompt, relying on heavy and repetitive training cost which impedes their practical deployment. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for fast text-to-3D generation, dubbed Instant3D. Once trained, Instant3D is able to create a 3D object for an unseen text prompt in less than one second with a single run of a feedforward network. We achieve this remarkable speed by devising a new network that directly constructs a 3D triplane from a text prompt. The core …

To enhance interactions in VR, many techniques introduce offsets between the virtual and real-world position of users’ hands. Nevertheless, such hand redirection (HR) techniques are only effective as long as they go unnoticed by users—not disrupting the VR experience. While several studies consider how much unnoticeable redirection can be applied, these focus on mid-air floating hands that are disconnected from users’ bodies. Increasingly, VR avatars are embodied as being directly connected with the user’s body, which provide more visual cue anchoring, and may therefore reduce the unnoticeable redirection threshold. In this work, we studied more complete avatars and their effect …
