Charge And Strain Engineering Of Ferroic And Correlated Oxides, Yifei Hao

This dissertation presents a comprehensive study of the charge and strain effects on the electronic and magnetic properties of epitaxial ferroic and correlated oxide thin films and heterostructures. We perform the planar Hall effect to quantify the magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) in epitaxial La1-xSrxMnO3 films (x = 0.2 and 0.33) deposited on SrTiO3 substrates. The biaxial magnetic anisotropy energy of L0.67Sr0.33MnO3 is about 17% larger than La0.8Sr0.2MnO3. By comparing with the theoretically predicted values, we have decoupled the doping and strain effects on …

The precise measurement of soil water content (SWC) is crucial for effective water resource management. This study utilizes the Cosmic Ray Neutron Sensor (CRNS) for area-averaged SWC measurements, emphasizing the need to consider all hydrogen sources, including the time-variable ones like plant biomass and water content. Chapter 1 presents a background on soil moisture estimation, CRNS technology, and an overview of the study. It discusses various soil moisture measurement techniques, highlights the gap in knowledge addressed by CRNS technology, explains CRNS functionality and advancements, and outlines the study's motivations and methods.

The National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT) has listed the inaccessibility of research related to misconceptions in atmospheric and climate science as a Geoscience Education Research Grand Challenge (Cervato et al. 2018). This project was a direct response to this call for research and consisted of three distinct steps: 1) data gathering, which included reviewing the literature for relevant misconception data, 2) a qualitative analysis, which included compiling, organizing, and categorizing the data collected, and 3) a quantitative analysis, which included determining the prevalence of each misconception across topic categories, demographic categories, and over time. Mechanical Exfoliation of Graphene is an often-overlooked portion of the fabrication of quantum devices, and to create more devices quickly, optimizing this process to generate better flakes is critical. In addition, it would be valuable to simulate test pulls quickly, to gain insight on flake quality of various materials and exfoliation conditions. Physical pulls of graphene at various temperatures, pull forces, and pull repetitions were analyzed and compared to the results of ANSYS simulations, solved for similar results. In this dissertation, we present two projects to study superconducting FeSe monolayer using first-principles density functional calculations. Monolayer FeSe/SrTiO3 system has very different properties as compared to its bulk counterpart in terms of critical superconducting temperature, Fermi surface topology and antiferromagnetic (AFM) stability. For FeSe monolayer, local magnetic moment (LMM) and AFM fluctuation are closely linked to superconductivity. However, LMM is not studied enough for FeSe monolayer. For FeSe/SrTiO3 system, the substrate SrTiO3 constrains the in-plane lattice constant for FeSe and also plays a crucial role in the onset and enhancement of superconductivity by providing charge transfer. …

Drawdown areas emitted 80% of reservoir CO2 with just 1/5 area.

Emissions from reservoir shorelines near forests were greater than from areas near grassland.

CO2 emissions increase with the distance from the water.

Water availability is crucial for organismal survival and growth in dryland environments, affecting both ecological interactions and carbon dynamics. The goal of this thesis is to develop soil water release curves (SWRCs) that link soil water potentials (Ψ) to soil water content (θ). Using the SWRCs, temporal soil water sufficiency curves are developed, which quantify the amount of time that dryland critical zones have enough water to sustain the physiology of organisms. Ceramic additive manufacturing (AM) uses the same fundamentals as material extrusion (MEX) that utilizes polymers or resins for printing applications. Ceramic AM uses the same process of slicing an STL file to determine a toolpath for the printer that will facilitate material deposition to manufacture full parts; ceramic AM also provides a low-cost advantage when compared to processes that require high powered lasers for melting metal powders or heated nozzles used for dispensing thermoplastics. To date, there is no research that assesses the distribution of urban tree canopy (UTC) in the city of El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, along the U.S.- Mexico border. This study employs a combination of theoretical and experimental analysis to spectroscopically investigate the biomechanistic structure relationship and therapeutic effects of the Nordihydroguaiaretic Acid (NDGA) chemical derived from the Larrea Tridentata plant. These relationships are crucial for understanding NDGA's efficacy in disease prevention, treatment, and potential toxicological effects. While the medicinal and antiviral properties of the NDGA have been studied extensively, there remains a gap in optically identifying and reporting its structural changes. Abstract:This thesis presents an investigation into the magnetic properties of high entropy alloy (HEA) samples, focusing primarily on compositions within the FeNiCoMn system and their gallium/chemically doped derivatives. High entropy alloys represent a promising class of materials with unique properties resulting from their complex composition and structural arrangements. The behavior of these alloys, particularly in their magnetic properties, remains an area of significant interest due to their potential applications in magnetic storage, sensing, and other technological domains. The strength of the far-ultraviolet field is an important parameter in determining the chemistry that takes place in star-forming regions. FUV radiation is produced by bright stars in the galaxy and absorbed by interstellar dust. By using newly available maps of the dust distribution, in conjunction with catalogs of stellar positions and spectra, we created a local map of the FUV field ranging from 6-13.6 eV. We find a value of 6.57*10^-14 erg/cm^3 at the location of the Sun. This value, alongside its spectra, follow previous measurements and estimates of the FUV field at the Sun. We further study the …

Surface soil moisture retrieval from L-band brightness temperature has been developed for the past decades due to multiple beneficial characteristics of 1-2 GHz frequency bands for remote sensing of the environment. In the last decade, photoredox catalysis has become a powerful tool in synthetic chemistry. It relies on the ability of catalytic systems that facilitate energy-demanding redox reactions thanks to photoinduced electron transfer processes. This dissertation focuses on the computational investigation of the redox properties of transition metal photoredox catalysts using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The research systematically explores the effects of altering redox-active ligands on the thermodynamics of electron transfer events in the photoredox cycle. Despite notable progress in lipid nanoparticle (LNP)-mediated gene delivery, achieving selective transfection of specific cell types, such as cancer cells, remains a significant hurdle, hindering the advancement of innovative gene therapies. In this study, we engineered an LNP formulation encapsulating plasmid DNA (pDNA) encoding the monomeric Green Lantern (mGL) fluorescent reporter protein. The DT7 peptide ligand targeting human transferrin receptor 1 (hTfR1) was also conjugated to the LNP surface for targeted delivery to hTfR1-expressing cells. Optimization of LNP composition yielded favorable particle diameter, ζ-potential, yield, and pDNA encapsulation efficiency. Metal complexes of dipyrromethene (dipyrrins) used as sensitizers in photocatalysis offer a way to harness solar energy in chemical bonds to create new fuels. This offers the dual role of reducing fossil fuel dependence and atmospheric CO2 levels. Traditionally, metal dipyrrin complexes are synthesized using substituted pyrroles, aldehydes, and transition metals. Indoles have a more expanded pi-electron system and their dipyrrin-type complex may exhibit visible light absorption, suggesting that they can act as photosensitizers for CO2 reduction processes. A novel indoledipyrromethene was synthesized using unsubstituted indole and mesitaldehyde. The complex exhibits visible light absorption at 422 nm. Its …

Increasing global energy demand and environmental concerns have fueled the exploration of sustainable and efficient methods for renewable fuel production. The conversion of cellulosic waste to hydrocarbon fuels using hydrogenated metal oxides presents a novel and eco-friendly approach to sustainably address energy demand. In this study, hydrogenated metal oxides were used as catalysts in a relatively low-temperature and atmospheric-pressure environment to facilitate the conversion of cellulosic waste into hydrocarbon fuels. Hydrogenated metal oxides have been introduced as potential hydrogen transfer catalysts. Landslides are mass movements that affect infrastructure across East Tennessee, causing problems for the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT). An assessment of conditions and locations of unstable slopes can aid TDOT in infrastructure management. Landslide susceptibility was evaluated for Anderson and Morgan counties, TN, off State Route 116 in the New River watershed. Susceptibility maps used a landslide inventory and six factors: elevation, slope, geology, distance from stream, rainfall, and curvature, input in forest-based classification and logistic regression models. Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) policies are vulnerable to adversarial noise in observations, which can have disastrous consequences in safety-critical environments. For instance, a self-driving car receiving adversarially perturbed sensory observations about traffic signs (e.g., a stop sign physically altered to be perceived as a speed limit sign) can be fatal. Leading existing approaches for making RL algorithms robust to an observation-perturbing adversary have focused on (a) regularization approaches that make expected value objectives robust by adding adversarial loss terms; or (b) employing "maximin'' (i.e., maximizing the minimum value) notions of robustness. Data attribution seeks to trace model outputs back to training data. With the recent development of diffusion models, data attribution has become a desired module to properly assign valuations for high-quality or copyrighted training samples, ensuring that data contributors are fairly compensated or credited. Several theoretically motivated methods have been proposed to implement data attribution, in an effort to improve the trade-off between computational scalability and effectiveness.
