Antler Foreland Basin Evolution Recorded In Detrital Zircon U-Pb Geochronology, James Duncan Aug 2022

Antler Foreland Basin Evolution Recorded In Detrital Zircon U-Pb Geochronology, James Duncan

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Antler orogeny was a Devonian-Mississippian (375-320 Ma) mountain building event that occurred along the western Laurentian margin. The initiation of the Antler orogeny is marked by the emplacement of the Roberts Mountain Allochthon (RMA) that thrust Cambrian-Devonian deep water marine siliciclastic rocks 100 km eastward onto the western Laurentian margin. Shortening related to the Antler orogeny deformed RMA strata and caused a flexural response in the continental crust that resulted in the formation of the adjacent Antler Foreland basin. The paleogeographic history of the RMA strata and tectonic drivers for the Antler orogeny are still debated. Proposed models suggest …

Source And Parental Melts Of Poikilitic Shergottites: Implications For Martian Magmatism, Evan W. O'Neal

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Martian poikilitic shergottite meteorites are cumulate rocks that can be used to understand melt evolution on Mars from the bottom of the crust (~10 kbar) all the way up to near-surface shallow depths (~1 kbar). There is a general lack of knowledge regarding shergottites including, parental magma compositions, crystallization ages, and the location of the enriched geochemical source of the shergottites in the martian mantle. Through a comprehensive petrographic and geochemical study, we have attempted to better understand poikilitic shergottite formation and the evolution of the martian interior during the Amazonian period (~3 Ga – present day). We studied a …

Bidirectional Testing For Repairable Systems Reliability: Power Asymmetries, Panel Of Control Charts, And Reliability Graphics, Sung Keun Koo

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

To a practitioner who chooses to be on the safe side, we offer an option between a cocktail of tests and a solo one-size-fits-all test as a needed antidote to power asymmetries. Two bidirectional tests are first established to empower a basic pair of tests as asymmetrical performances. Unsurprisingly, we’ve seen either bidirectional device championing in one alternative setting, but also being turned against the very setting altered with just one of the composed elements. Progressing by filtering out the bad and enhancing the good, we assemble a hybrid from the empowered pair to restore power symmetries that are thought …

Replication Data For: Investigating Detection Probability Of Mobile Survey Solutions For Natural Gas Pipeline Leaks Under Different Atmospheric Conditions, Shanru Tian, Stuart Riddick, Younki Cho, Clay Bell, Daniel Zimmerle, Kathleen Smits

Earth & Environmental Sciences Datasets

The 2015 Paris agreement aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions and keep global temperature rise below 2 °C above pre-industrial levels. Reducing CH4 emissions from leaking pipelines presents a relatively achievable objective. While walking and driving surveys are commonly used to detect leaks, the detection probability (DP) is poorly characterized. This study aims to investigate how leak rates, survey distance and speed, and atmospheric conditions affect the DP in controlled belowground conditions with release rates of 0.5–8.5 g min−1. Results show that DP is highly influenced by survey speed, atmospheric stability, and wind speed. The average DP in Pasquill–Gifford stability …

Open-Source Workflows For Reproducible Molecular Simulation, Jenny W. Fothergill Aug 2022

Open-Source Workflows For Reproducible Molecular Simulation, Jenny W. Fothergill

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

We apply molecular simulation to predict the equilibrium structure of organic molecular aggregates and how these structures determine material properties, with a focus on software engineering practices for ensuring correctness. Because simulations are implemented in software, there is potential for authentic scientific reproducibility in such work: An entire experimental apparatus (codebase) can be given to another investigator who should be able to use the same processes to find the same answers. Yet in practice, there are many barriers which stand in the way of reproducible molecular simulations that we address through automation, generalization, and software packaging. Collaboration on and application …

Towards Making Transformer-Based Language Models Learn How Children Learn, Yousra Mahdy Aug 2022

Towards Making Transformer-Based Language Models Learn How Children Learn, Yousra Mahdy

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Transformer-based Language Models (LMs), learn contextual meanings for words using a huge amount of unlabeled text data. These models show outstanding performance on various Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks. However, what the LMs learn is far from what the meaning is for humans, partly due to the fact that humans can differentiate between concrete and abstract words, but language models make no distinction. Concrete words are words that have a physical representation in the world such as “chair”, while abstract words are ideas such as “democracy”. The process of learning word meanings starts from early childhood when children acquire their …

Long-Term Trends In Extreme Environmental Events With Changepoint Detection, Mintaek Lee Aug 2022

Long-Term Trends In Extreme Environmental Events With Changepoint Detection, Mintaek Lee

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines long-term trends in extreme environmental events with considerations for changepoints and autocorrelation. Due to changes in measurement location, observer, instrument, sampling protocol, local ecosystem, etc., many environmental time series often contain inhomogeneous changes in their distributions. If ignored in the modeling process, these inhomogeneities could produce misleading estimation of the long-term trends in these environmental extremes. Because documentations for these changepoint-inducing events could be incomplete or missing in many cases, those changepoints need to be estimated from the data. Here, we use a genetic algorithm to estimate the number and times of changepoints in the environmental extremes …

Ontology-Based Formal Approach For Safety And Security Verification Of Industrial Control Systems, Ramesh Neupane Aug 2022

Ontology-Based Formal Approach For Safety And Security Verification Of Industrial Control Systems, Ramesh Neupane

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Control logics, as part of the Industrial Control Systems (ICS), are used to control the physical processes of the critical infrastructures such as power plants, water, and gas distribution, etc. Most commonly, the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) manages these processes through actuators based on information received from sensor readings. Any safety issues or cyberattacks on these systems may have catastrophic consequences on human lives and the environment. In an effort to improve the resilience and security of control logics, this thesis provides algorithms and tools to formally define the safety and security requirements w.r.t. the physical processes, and the industrial …

Ranchers' And Federal Land Managers' Perceptions Of Rangeland Management Across An Environmental Gradient, Calandria Puntenney Aug 2022

Ranchers' And Federal Land Managers' Perceptions Of Rangeland Management Across An Environmental Gradient, Calandria Puntenney

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Managing semi-arid rangelands to meet social-ecological goals requires monitoring of key ecological indicators that will inform management responses. These goals and monitoring objectives are in turn grounded in land managers’ understandings, or “mental models,” of how the rangeland system operates. Rangeland managers’ mental models are often highly place-specific, which can enable management actions to be matched to local conditions. In the western United States, ranchers and federal agency resource specialists, like those in the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), are two of the primary groups involved in rangeland management. We compared ranchers’ and BLM agency specialists’ rangeland mental models in …

Symmetric Generations And An Algorithm To Prove Relations, Diddier Andrade Aug 2022

Symmetric Generations And An Algorithm To Prove Relations, Diddier Andrade

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

In this thesis we have discovered homomorphic images of several progenitors such as 3^(*56):(23:(3:7), 3^(*14):(23:(3:7)), 5^(∗24) : S5, 2^(∗10) : (10 : 2), 56^(∗24) : (A5 : 2), and 11^(∗12) :m L2(11). We give isomorphism types of each image that we have found.
We then create a monomial representation of L2(11) by lifting 5:11 onto it.
We manually perform Double Coset Enumeration of 3:(2×S5) over D12
to create its Cayley graph. This is achieved by solving many word problems. The
Cayley graph is used to find a permutation representation of 3:(2×S5). We also
perform Double Coset Enumeration S3 × A5 …

Ultrashort Pulse Laser Filamentation Electrical And Optical Diagnostic Comparison, James E. Wymer Aug 2022

Ultrashort Pulse Laser Filamentation Electrical And Optical Diagnostic Comparison, James E. Wymer

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

Results presented here examine the effect of changing gas pressure on the radio frequency (RF) emissions of an ultrashort pulse laser filament plasma and how those emissions vary longitudinally in the laser focal region. We use a WR284 rectangular waveguide with a 1.5 cm hole that allows the beam through. A 3.2 GHz microwave signal is emitted in the waveguide, and signals are received through a waveguide-to-coax antenna connected to an HP8470B Schottky diode. By enabling and disabling the 3.2 GHz signal, we measure both the self-emitted RF from a USPL filament and subsequently the degree of attenuation a filament …

Reduced Fuel Emissions Through Connected Vehicles And Truck Platooning, Paul D. Brummitt Aug 2022

Reduced Fuel Emissions Through Connected Vehicles And Truck Platooning, Paul D. Brummitt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication enable the sharing, in real time, of vehicular locations and speeds with other vehicles, traffic signals, and traffic control centers. This shared information can help traffic to better traverse intersections, road segments, and congested neighborhoods, thereby reducing travel times, increasing driver safety, generating data for traffic planning, and reducing vehicular pollution. This study, which focuses on vehicular pollution, used an analysis of data from NREL, BTS, and the EPA to determine that the widespread use of V2V-based truck platooning—the convoying of trucks in close proximity to one another so as to reduce air drag …

Characteristic Sets Of Matroids, Dony Varghese Aug 2022

Characteristic Sets Of Matroids, Dony Varghese

Doctoral Dissertations

Matroids are combinatorial structures that generalize the properties of linear independence. But not all matroids have linear representations. Furthermore, the existence of linear representations depends on the characteristic of the fields, and the linear characteristic set is the set of characteristics of fields over which a matroid has a linear representation. The algebraic independence in a field extension also defines a matroid, and also depends on the characteristic of the fields. The algebraic characteristic set is defined in the similar way as the linear characteristic set.

The linear representations and characteristic sets are well studied. But the algebraic representations and …

Growth And Reproduction In Gulf Of Mexico Black Corals (Antipatharians) In Field And Laboratory Studies, Victoria E. Salinas

Theses and Dissertations

Black corals provide an important ecosystem of marine life and are found throughout all the oceans of the world at depths between 2 and 8,600 m. However, little is understood about their life history and the factors that control the distribution of black corals, particularly in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM). Given the impacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on soft corals (e.g., black corals and octocorals) in the GoM, studies of their growth and reproductive biology in both natural and aquaculture environments are crucial for restoration efforts. The objectives of this study were to examine reproductive processes, compare …

The On-Line Width Of Various Classes Of Posets., Israel R. Curbelo Aug 2022

The On-Line Width Of Various Classes Of Posets., Israel R. Curbelo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An on-line chain partitioning algorithm receives a poset, one element at a time, and irrevocably assigns the element to one of the chains. Over 30 years ago, Szemer\'edi proved that any on-line algorithm could be forced to use $\binom{w+1}{2}$ chains to partition a poset of width $w$. The maximum number of chains that can be forced on any on-line algorithm remains unknown. In the survey paper by Bosek et al., variants of the problem were studied where the class is restricted to posets of bounded dimension or where the poset is presented via a realizer of size $d$. We prove …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The invasion of the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) (Adelges tsugae) has posed a continual threat in the United States to the Eastern Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) trees since the 1950s. HWA feed on eastern hemlock needles, reducing the amount of healthy photosynthesizing vegetative area. The use of satellite imagery has been instrumental in identifying areas of eastern hemlock presence. Satellite platforms like Landsat and AVIRIS are commonly used for identification, classification, and mapping of eastern hemlock. Sentinel-2 imagery was released in 2015 for free access. It has a finer spatial grain of with the majority of the …

Towards Security Aware Crowdsourcing, Mingyan Xiao Aug 2022

Towards Security Aware Crowdsourcing, Mingyan Xiao

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations

Crowdsourcing has emerged as a novel problem-solving paradigm, which facilitates addressing problems by outsourcing them to the crowd. The openness of crowdsourcing renders it vulnerable to misbehaving workers that impair data trustworthiness. They may attempt to submit calibrated data/parameters to manipulate crowdsourcing outcomes for higher beneficial gain. Those misbehaviors would infringe crowdsourcing's process and, overall, its usefulness. In this dissertation, I intend to secure the crowdsourcing platform from worker's untrustworthy data reporting. The main contributions are mainly threefold. First, we secure task allocation, an essential but vulnerable stage in crowdsourcing, from individual misreporting. To be specific, misbehaving workers may manipulate …
