We consider a decentralized convex unconstrained optimization problem, where the cost function can be decomposed into a sum of strongly convex and smooth functions, associated with individual agents, interacting over a static or time-varying network. Our main concern is the convergence rate of first-order optimization algorithms as a function of the network’s graph, more specifically, of the condition numbers of gossip matrices. We are interested in the case when the network is time-varying but the rate of changes is restricted. The College of Saint Benedict (CSB) and Saint John’s University (SJU) Office of Sustainability conducted a comprehensive Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory that includes emissions from both CSB and SJU campuses. This report details GHG emissions for Fiscal Year (FY) 2023 (July 1, 2022-June 30, 2023) in Metric Tons of Carbon Dioxide Equivalents (MTCO2e), the standard unit of measurement used to track and report GHG emissions based on their global warming potential. Data was collected, organized, and analyzed by staff in the CSB and SJU Sustainability Office.

A comparison analysis conducted via COMPASS life cycle analysis software has indicated that a one-way crate design, rather than a reusable crate design, is in fact the more environmentally friendly packaging system. These results can be interpreted differently, however, as the manufacturer of said crate designs must confirm what impact indicators they would like to reference as environmental goalposts. The conducted analysis provides insight into what the environmental impacts of each packaging system look like as packaging at all three system levels has been identified as a means of reducing environmental impacts globally. Any data processing starts with measurement results. Measurement results are never absolutely accurate. Because of this measurement uncertainty, the results of processing measurement results are, in general, somewhat different from what we would have obtained if we knew the exact values of the measured quantities. To make a decision based on the result of data processing, we need to know how accurate is this result, i.e., we need to propagate the measurement uncertainty through the data processing algorithm. In this article, we examine variational inequalities of the form (Formula presented.), where (Formula presented.) is a generalized fractional (Formula presented.) -Laplace operator, K is a closed convex set in a fractional Musielak–Orlicz–Sobolev space, and (Formula presented.) is a multivalued integral operator. We consider a functional analytic framework for the above problem, including conditions on the multivalued lower order term (Formula presented.) such that the problem can be properly formulated in a fractional Musielak–Orlicz–Sobolev space, and the involved mappings have certain useful monotonicity–continuity properties. Furthermore, we investigate the existence of solutions contingent upon certain coercivity conditions.

The efficacy of hydraulic pumping as a remediation method of a petroleum, or Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (LNAPL) spill in Arroyo Grande, California will be assessed by determining aquifer properties, assessing the chemical properties of the contaminant, recovering the contaminant from the subsurface, and proposing alternative remediation techniques. Soil, groundwater and contaminant characteristics, cumulative volume of LNAPL skimming test data, pumping rates, and LNAPL thicknesses in wells installed within the contaminant plume were collected. Sediments around the LNAPL source are contaminated with hydrocarbons in the gas and diesel range. Pumping efficacy is expected to continue to decrease at the site, …

In the first approximation, when changes are small, most real-world systems are described by linear dynamical equations. If we know the initial state of the system, and we know its dynamics, then we can, in principle, predict the system's state many moments ahead. In practice, however, we usually know both the initial state and the coefficients of the system's dynamics with some uncertainty. Frequently, we encounter interval uncertainty, when for each parameter, we only know its range, but we have no information about the probability of different values from this range. It is well known that every color can be represented as a combination of three basic colors: red, green, and blue. In particular, we can get several colors by combining two of the basic colors. Interestingly, while a combination of two neighboring colors leads to a color that corresponds to a certain frequency, the combination of two non-neighboring colors -- red and blue -- leads to magenta, a color that does not correspond to any frequency. It is known that quantum field theories that describe fields in our usual 4-dimensional space-times are not fully consistent: they predict meaningless infinite values for some physical quantities. There are some known tricks to avoid such infinities, but it is definitely desirable to have a fully consistent theory, a theory that would produce correct results without having to use additional tricks. It turns out that the only way to have such a theory is to consider space-times of higher dimensions, the smallest of which is 10. Many reasonable conditions have been formulated for a fuzzy "and"-operation: idempotency, commutativity, associativity, etc. It is known that the only "and"-operation that satisfies all these conditions is minimum, but minimum is not the most adequate description of expert's "and", and it often does not lead to the best control or the best decision. Many other more adequate "and"-operations (t-norms) have been proposed and effectively used, but they do not satisfy the natural idempotency condition. Reverse osmosis (RO) is a widely utilized method for water treatment and desalination. Our study examined the application of an electrocoagulation (EC) and RO hybrid system for treating actual brackish groundwater (BGW), focusing on reducing RO scaling by EC pretreatment. A series of EC operating conditions were investigated, such as applied voltage, pH, EC reaction time, and type of electrode. The commercial software WAVE was utilized to analyze the water quality to assess the scaling potential of the EC pretreated feed stream for the San Antonio Water System (SAWS) BGW desalination plant. The main goal of this survey is to identify as many U.S. Stormwater Utilities (SWUs) as possible. Because many stormwater professionals do not have the time to respond to questionnaires, our primary method of identification was Internet searches. We searched key terms such as “stormwater utility,” “stormwater fee,” and “drainage fee.” We scoured online municipal codes such as Municode, AmLegal, Sterling, LexisNexis, General Code, and others. We searched through many city web websites to find utilities. We have also had many people contact me to update fees and identify new utilities. This thesis investigates the potential positive impact of fostering empathy and understanding for the natural world through art education. Through action research, this study examines various teaching approaches, such as incorporating scientific knowledge, employing literature to discuss ecological themes, and engaging in participatory storytelling activities to cultivate empathy among elementary school children. The objective of this thesis is to explore empathy as a potential pathway to encourage children to foster connections with the natural world and develop compassionate traits, attitudes, and behaviors towards nature as they grow. A differentially methylated region (DMR) is a genomic region that has significantly different methylation patterns between biological conditions. Identifying DMRs between different biological conditions is critical for developing disease biomarkers. Although methods for detecting DMRs in microarray data have been introduced, developing methods with high precision, recall, and accuracy in determining the true length of DMRs remains a challenge. In this study, we propose a normalized kernel-weighted model to account for similar methylation profiles using the relative probe distance from "nearby" CpG sites. Radiation induced conductivity (RIC) plays a critical role in space charge dissipation with insulating materials used in spacecraft. Ionizing radiation present in harsh space plasma environments deposits energy into materials via inelastic scatter, exciting electrons into the conduction band without depositing charge for penetration radiation. RIC is expected to be affected by temperature and total ionizing dose (TID); temperature primarily affects the rate of promotion of electrons in localized trap states within the band gap to the conduction band, while TID can create additional traps states thereby increasing trap density and reducing mean trap separation.

Temperature dependent radiation induced conductivity (RIC) data applicable to conditions experienced by spacecraft are presented for low density polyethylene (LDPE) and poylimide (PI, KaptonHN, along with summaries for five other common polymeric spacecraft mateials: polyimide (PI; Kapton HNTM, and Kapton ETM), polytetraflouroethylene (PTFE; TeflonTM), expanded PTFE (ePTFE), ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene and (ETFE; TefzelTM). In this paper we study the deployment of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) network that consists of multiple UAVs to provide emergent communication service for people who are trapped in a disaster area, where each UAV is equipped with a base station that has limited computing capacity and power supply, and thus can only serve a limited number of people. Electric vehicles (EVs) play a significant role in reducing carbon emissions. In the US, EVs are mostly owned by multi-vehicle households, and their usage is primarily studied in the context of vehicle miles traveled. This study takes a unique approach by analyzing EV usage through the lens of vehicle choice (between EVs and internal combustion engine vehicles) within multi-vehicle households. A two-step machine-learning framework (clustering and decision trees) is proposed. The framework determines the preferred trip category for EV use and captures the effects of household attributes, driver attributes, built-environment factors, and gas prices on EV use in multi-vehicle households. …

In the examination of the mean parameter of the skewed distributions, testing methods often rely on the central limit theorem and data transformation. Notably, Johnson’s and Chen’s modified ttests offer reliable alternatives by incorporating additional sample moments. This work directs its attention towards the truncated saddlepoint (TS) approximation method, which effectively estimates the right-tail probability of right-skewed continuous distributions using a limited number of sample moments. The TS approximation is employed to derive the p-value in one-sample mean testing. In the issue of financial portfolio selection, especially in emerging financial markets, the investor usually intends to make the best possible choice based on several conflicting objectives, such as return, risk, and liquidity. To obtain a suitable portfolio using ideal values and the maximum possible deviations, we suggest fuzzy goal programming and its combination with satisfaction functions and expert opinions. The model can determine the best portfolio based on the opinions of financial market experts, taking into account uncertainties. This work investigated multiple mechanisms that can potentially lead to H2S in the oil production stream of Bakken wells, including TSR, BSR, source rock generation, migration from deeper or shallower formations that contain H2S, and geomechanical mechanisms related to reservoir stimulation work.

Digital Transformation (DT) is more than simply integrating a new digital technology into the organization. Despite a growing volume of research, however, there is little coverage of the characteristics of DT leadership. Using a grounded approach, where 16 practitioner voices are central to the theorizing output, we present 10 DT leadership characteristics. Each characteristic links what action a DT leader needs to take and how a DT leader enables that action. We also asked 30 DT leaders to evaluate the importance of each of the 10 DT leadership characteristics. Our approach strengthens the relevance for practitioners striving for the best …
