Hydrocarbon vents have recently been reported to contribute considerable amounts of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to the oceans. Many such hydrocarbon vents widely exist in the northern South China Sea (NSCS). To investigate if these hydrocarbon vent sites release DOC, we used a real-time video multiple-corer to collect bottom seawater and surface sediments at vent sites. We analyzed concentrations of DOC in these samples and estimated DOC fluxes. Elevated DOC concentrations in the porewaters were found at some sites suggesting that DOC may come from these hydrocarbon vents. Benthic fluxes of DOC from these sediments were 28 to 1264 µmol …

Improved Estimation Of Optimal Cut-Off Point Associated With Youden Index Using Ranked Set Sampling, Jingjing Yin, Hani M. Samawi, Daniel Linder

Biostatistics: Faculty Publications

A diagnostic cut-off point of a biomarker measurement is needed for classifying a random subject to be either diseased or healthy. However, the cut-off point is usually unknown and needs to be estimated by some optimization criteria. One important criterion is the Youden index, which has been widely adopted in practice. The Youden index, which is defined as the maximum of (sensitivity + specificity −1), directly measures the largest total diagnostic accuracy a biomarker can achieve. Therefore, it is desirable to estimate the optimal cut-off point associated with the Youden index. Sometimes, taking the actual measurements of a biomarker is …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Topological insulator Bi2Se3 has shown a number of interesting physical properties. Doping Bi2Se3 with copper or strontium has been demonstrated to make the material superconducting and potentially even a topological superconductor. The recent discovery of superconducting niobium-doped Bi2Se3 reveals an exciting new physical phenomenon, the coexistence of superconductivity and magnetic ordering, as well as signatures of an odd-parity p-wave superconducting order. To understand this new phenomenon, a detailed knowledge of the electronic structure is needed. We present an observation of quantum oscillations in the magnetization (the de Haas-van Alphen effect) of …

We introduce a solution that uses the availability of heavy crowds and their smart devices, to gain more result as to where potential parking is possible. By leveraging the raw magnetometer, gyroscope, and accelerometer data, we are able to detect parking spots through the natural movement exerted by the walking pedestrians on the sidewalks beside the streets. Dating back as far as 2013, a very large portion of pedestrians composing the crowds on the sidewalk, possessed at least one smart device in their hand or pocket14]. It is this statistic that fuels our application, in which we depend on crowds …

Possible Sources And Impacts Of Biochar Water Extractable Organic Compounds On Aquatic Microorganisms, Cameron Russell Smith

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Smokeless biomass pyrolysis with application of biochar as a soil amendment could be a significant approach for carbon sequestration to possibly control climate change for energy and environmental sustainability. If biochar were to be utilized as a soil amendment and a carbon sequestration agent at Gt C scales, the release of potentially toxic compounds into soils and associated hydrological systems, through soil rainwater runoff and leaching, might have negative consequences, in both agro-ecosystems and aquatic environmental systems. Therefore, the main focus of this dissertation was to study the sources and chemical composition of biochar water extractable (soluble) organic compounds and …

Hotspots, Extinction Risk And Conservation Priorities Of Greater Caribbean And Gulf Of Mexico Marine Bony Shorefishes, Christi Linardich

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Understanding the status of species is important for allocation of resources to redress biodiversity loss. Regional organizations tasked with managing threats to the 1,360 marine bony shorefishes of the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico would benefit from a delineation of conservation priorities. However, prior to this study, conservation status was known for only one quarter of these shorefishes. Extinction risk assessment under IUCN Red List Criteria is a widely-used, objective method to communicate species-specific conservation needs. Data were collated on each species’ distribution, population, habitats and threats and experts at three Red List workshops assigned a global level extinction risk …

Deep Semantic Image Interpolation, Joshua D. Little Jul 2016

Deep Semantic Image Interpolation, Joshua D. Little

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Image datasets often live on a continuum: Images from an outdoor scene vary from day to night, across different weather conditions, and over the course of seasons. Faces age and exhibit different expressions. We consider the problem of taking individual images from these datasets and explicitly manipulating those images to change where they lie on the continuum. We focus on a version of this problem that requires as little input as possible, and we build off of previous work using CNN features to construct an intermediate image manifold on which to manipulate the images. We also investigate a novel way …

The empirical results show that both policies significantly affected the demand for online consultation. Our study …

The Darklight Rises: Visible Light Communication In The Dark, Zhao Tian, Kevin Wright, Xia Zhou Jul 2016

The Darklight Rises: Visible Light Communication In The Dark, Zhao Tian, Kevin Wright, Xia Zhou

Computer Science Technical Reports

Visible Light Communication (VLC) emerges as a new wireless communication technology with appealing benefits not present in radio communication. However, current VLC designs commonly require LED lights to emit shining light beams, which greatly limits the applicable scenarios of VLC (e.g., in a sunny day when indoor lighting is not needed). It also entails high energy overhead and unpleasant visual experiences for mobile devices to transmit data using VLC. We design and develop DarkLight, a new VLC primitive that allows light-based communication to be sustained even when LEDs emit extremely-low luminance. The key idea is to encode data into ultra-short, …

Analysis Of An Ion Suppression Device Coupled With An Ion Chromatography System, Sam John

All Capstone Projects

A priority of chromatographers is to eliminate extraneous and errant noise that can interfere with any experiment. The goal is to focus on what is being analyzed, and in the case of detectors, modifying the instrument being utilized is the method of choice. One way to do that in ion chromatography (IC) is through the use of a suppressor.

Though not all instruments utilized in IC are equipped with suppressors, it is ideal to help reduce the ions already known to be present in the eluent. The premise of this study is simple in nature, but important in its application. …

When There Is A Unique Group Of A Given Order And Related Results, Haya Ibrahim Binjedaen Jul 2016

When There Is A Unique Group Of A Given Order And Related Results, Haya Ibrahim Binjedaen

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

It is well-known that any group whose order is a prime number must be cyclic, that is there is only one group of that order up to isomorphism. This is also the case for some non-prime orders, for example there is only one group of order 15 up to isomorphism. This thesis provides the necessary background material to completely characterize those n for which these is a unique group of order n, namely when n and the Euler phi function of n are relatively prime. We also determine for which n there are exactly two groups of order n up …
