The West Plains has been significantly impacted by PFAS contamination due to the decades-long use of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) for firefighting training at both Fairchild Air Force Base (FAFB) and the Spokane International Airport (SIA). Groundwater contamination is significant, but less work had been done to understand contamination in surface waters. We now have over a year of data with most locations were sampled seasonally. Though FAFB and SIA are likely sources for some of the contamination, other, smaller sources exist. Understanding the difference between signal and noise in a measurement is fundamental to analytical chemists. The typical instruments found in an undergraduate chemistry department can be used to teach this concept, as well as signal averaging, by giving students hands-on experience with measurements and data processing. This work presents an undergraduate laboratory module (homework and experiment) that provides specific instructions for using gas chromatographs, fluorometers, a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, an atomic absorption spectrophotometer, and an infrared spectrometer to collect replicate measurements and a framework for calculating the noise level, baseline, signal level, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and the signal thresholds …

In this study, we conducted high-throughput spatiotemporal analysis of primary cilia length and orientation across 22 mouse brain regions. We developed automated image analysis algorithms, which enabled us to examine over 10 million individual cilia, generating the largest spatiotemporal atlas of cilia. We found that cilia length and orientation display substantial variations across different brain regions and exhibit fluctuations over a 24-h period, with region-specific peaks during light-dark phases. Our analysis revealed unique orientation patterns of cilia, suggesting that cilia orientation within the brain is not random but follows specific patterns. The Kentucky Microbiome Dataset is a continuously updated geolocated dataset which describes the distribution and diversity of microorganisms across the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Each geolocated point represents a location reported in the peer-reviewed literature where microorganisms were sampled from soil, water, geologic substrates, or clinical settings. Environmental studies include only non-host-associated, non-clinical microorganisms sampled from natural environments. Clinical studies are mapped separately to highlight locations where investigations into host-associated or human health-related microbes have occurred.

Pesticides are used globally for a wide range of applications including agricultural, forestry, roadsides, freshwater systems, and personal use. While pesticides have ensured efficient crop production, they are frequently transported away from application sites and are ubiquitous in terrestrial and aquatic environments. Magnetar giant flares are rare, extremely bright bursts of gamma-rays from highly magnetized neutron stars. These events are difficult to identify because, at extragalactic distances, they can appear similar to other astrophysical phenomena. Only a handful have been confidently identified to date, limiting our understanding of their origin and physical properties. This dissertation focuses on expanding the sample of known events and enabling a more detailed characterization of their observational features. Current radiobiological models focus primarily on nuclear DNA damage and fail to fully explain radiation-induced noncancerous health effects. This dissertation investigates whether non-nuclear subcellular structures contribute to radiation-induced biological damage through experimental biomarker analysis and computational microdosimetry. The central hypothesis posits that whole-body photon irradiation results in subcellular non-nuclear damage, specifically increased circulating mitochondrial DNA concentrations, that correlates with radiation dose and long-term noncancerous effects such as cardiovascular disease.

Specific Aim 1 measured mitochondrial and nuclear DNA concentrations in banked blood samples from 72 Chinese rhesus macaques that previously received whole-body photon irradiation ($0-10$ Gy) from Cobalt-60 or LINAC sources. …

However, their misuse introduces vulnerabilities, potentially leading to severe data breaches and substantial financial loss. A lattice beam configuration which results in an isotropic 3D trap near the surface of an atom chip is described. The lattice is formed near the surface of a reflectively coated atom chip, where three incident beams and three reflected beams intersect. The coherent interference of these six beams form a phase-stable optical lattice which extends to the surface of the atom chip. The lattice is experimentally realized and the trap frequency is measured. Degenerate Raman sideband cooling is performed in the optical lattice, cooling 80 million atoms to 1.1 μK.

Procedural terrain generation has become a staple in many digital environments, enabling the automated creation of large-scale and realistic landscapes for applications such as video games and movies. This paper provides an in-depth look at smooth noise functions and their use for terrain generation, as well as an overview of some more modern methods of generation. We explored the stationarity, trend, and seasonality of the hive weight and in-hive temperature of ten managed honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies at a research apiary of the Carl Hayden Bee Research Center in Tucson, Arizona, USA. The hives were monitored with electronic scales and in-hive temperature sensors from June to October 2022. The weight and temperature were recorded every five minutes around the clock. The collected data were curated into 2160 timestamped weight and 2160 timestamped temperature observations. A Wide-Field Map Of Ultracompact Dwarfs In The Coma Cluster, Richard T. Pomeroy, Juan P. Madrid, Conor R. O’Neill, Alexander T. Gagliano

A data set of 23,351 globular clusters (GCs) and ultracompact dwarfs (UCDs) in the Coma cluster of galaxies was built using Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys data. Based on the standard magnitude cut of MV ≤ −11, a total of 523 UCD candidates are found within this data set of compact stellar systems (CSS). From a color–magnitude diagram analysis built using this catalog, we find a clear mass–magnitude relation extending marginally into the UCD parameter space. The luminosity function defined by this data set shows an excess of sources at bright magnitudes, suggesting a bimodal formation scenario …

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widely studied due to their persistence, prevalence, and harmful effects on human and environmental health. Key challenges include improving detection methodologies, such as lowering detection limits, and developing more sensitive and selective approaches. Given the ubiquity of PFAS, effective sensing must be paired with remediation strategies that transform these pollutants into value-added or less toxic products. This perspective explores recent advances in electrochemical PFAS detection, highlighting challenges and future opportunities.

Gamma-ray binaries are luminous in gamma rays, composed of a compact object orbiting a massive companion star. The interaction between these two objects can drive relativistic outflows, either jets or winds, in which particles can be accelerated to energies reaching hundreds of teraelectronvolts (TeV). However, it is still debated where and under which physical conditions particles are accelerated in these objects and ultimately whether protons can be accelerated up to PeV energies. A fundamental stratum for $G$ is a triple $(x,r,\beta)$ where $x$ is a point in the Bruhat-Tits building of $G$, $r$ is a nonnegative real number called depth of the stratum, and $\beta$ is a semistable functional on the Moy-Prasad filtration of $\fg$ associated to $x$ at level $r$. Fundamental strata were first introduced to classify admissible representations of a $p$-adic reductive group. Large-language models (LLMs) already power mission critical tasks such as command-and-control chat, satellite ground-station automation, military analytics, and cyber-defense. Since most of these services are offered through application programming interfaces (APIs) that still expose full or top-k logits and lack mature safeguards, they present a serious, often overlooked attack surface. Earlier work has shown how to rebuild the output projection layer or distill surface behavior, but no attack has produced a deployable clone within a tight query budget. Mesopelagic zone (MZ) carbon budgets comparing supply with demand can be difficult to constrain due to the temporal and spatial offsets between key sources and sinks, their associated uncertainties, and potential sampling biases. To address these challenges, the EXport Processes in the Ocean from RemoTe Sensing (EXPORTS) campaign increased the number and variety of simultaneous measurements to monitor temporal variability in the MZ carbon budget using both a Lagrangian frame of reference and long-term autonomous observations. Mars’ south polar cap hosts dynamic landforms known as Swiss cheese features (SCFs), which form through the sublimation of carbon dioxide (CO2) ice driven by the planet’s extreme seasonal and diurnal solar insolation cycles. These shallow, rounded depressions—first identified by Mars Global Surveyor in 1999 and later monitored by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO)—have been observed to increase in size over time. However, large-scale analysis of SCF formation and growth has been limited by the slow and labor-intensive nature of manual mapping techniques. Can We Discover Physical Models Using Machine Learning? A Case Study Of Galaxy Sizes, Festa Buçinca-Çupallari, Ariyeh Maller, Viviana Acquaviva, Austen Gabrielpillai, Rachel S. Somerville

We explore the ability of machine learning methods to discover underlying equations of physics by searching for the equations governing galaxy size in a semianalytic model. This case study allows us to evaluate the process as we know the ground truth. We find that we fail to find an equation to predict galaxy size on the entire data set, but are successful when we separate out disk galaxies where we expect the physics driving galaxy size to be different than in bulge-dominated systems. Understanding the impact of climate change on species distribution is necessary to properly develop plans that conserve or prepare for maintenance of crucial ecosystems. Monodelphis domestica is a small mammal species native to Argentia, Bolivia, Brazil, and Paraguay. This species is known for its high adaptability and preference for living in wet conditions. Using bioclimatic variables, generalized linear models (GLM), and Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) we predicted how this species distribution will change within the next 75 years under different climate and anthropogenic changes.
