In this work, we train adaptive and efficient foraging strategies for robot swarms in a large, unmapped search space with multiple randomly distributed box obstacles using the penalty-reward based NeuroEvolution of Augmented Topologies (NEAT), P-NeatFA. This model enables efficient multi-robot foraging behavior and obstacle avoidance by rewarding effective actions and penalizing inefficient ones, thereby minimizing redundant exploration and outperforming traditional stochastic foraging algorithms. We optimize foraging strategies and search patterns in robot swarms by training models that maximize cumulative rewards in three types of resource distribution environments. Evolving Adaptive Foraging Robot Swarms With Neat In Environments With Obstacles, Tameem Uz Zaman, Pigar Biteng, Qi Lu

We apply NeuroEvolution of Augmented Topologies (NEAT) to evolve adaptive and efficient swarm foraging behaviors in unknown environments with randomly placed obstacles. By rewarding effective actions and penalizing inefficient ones using the proposed strategy P-NeatFA, the training generates efficient foraging and obstacle avoidance strategies, reducing redundancy and outperforming traditional stochastic foraging algorithms. Optimization is guided by cumulative reward-based fitness, evaluated through simulations involving three types of distributed resources. Foraging performance is assessed in terms of resource retrieval rates. We compare the performance of our proposed P-NeatFA with that of CPFA and NeatFA. Depuration, or the process of clearing impurities from the gut, is commonly applied to marine food products due to its efficacy in removing human pathogens from shellfish and edible ascidians. Recent studies also reported that depuration of filter-feeding animals helped reduce transient bacteria and identify resident symbionts in gut microbiome studies. Here, we examined the impact of depuration on bacteria in the branchial sac, gut, and hepatic gland of the solitary ascidian Pyura vittata. Hydrological switches, defined as rapid transitions between extreme meteorological events such as droughts and floods, are becoming increasingly frequent across the contiguous United States (CONUS) due to climate variability. This study analyzes the spatial and temporal patterns of these hydrological switches and their correlation with large-scale meteorological indices, such as the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). Streamflow data from the US Geological Survey (USGS) is analyzed to investigate the impact of meteorological drivers on hydrological variability. The liquid sampling – atmospheric pressure glow discharge (LS-APGD) ionization source is a novel microplasma ionization source capable of ionizing a diverse set of both inorganic and organic chemical species including, ionic metal constituents as well as ligated metallic species, polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), halogens, proteins, and even per/poly fluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS). We study the homomesy phenomenon under the rowmotion operator acting on order ideals of posets. We provide details for the extensions of several results in the literature concerning homomesies of toggleability statistics from finite to infinite orbits, which allows us to obtain homomesies for piecewise-linear and birational rowmotion, even in the case of infinite orbits. The Ingalls Ophiolite Complex is an ophiolite of Jurassic age in central WA, USA. Much of the complex formed in a supra-subduction zone setting in a back-arc ocean basin during subduction of the Farallon plate beginning 192 Ma. Between formation and obduction, mafic and ultramafic lithologies experienced alteration in the presence of water, which previous studies inferred to be seawater. Previously published δ¹⁸O and δD data from the Ingalls indicates isotopic depletion possibly caused by interaction with meteoric water at current latitude (~47.5 °N). Western water supplies are increasingly stressed by the compounding impacts of population growth, urbanization, and climate change. Rising temperatures in Idaho are shifting precipitation patterns, with more falling as rain rather than snow. This reduces snowpack and the resulting snowmelt, which serves as the predominant water source for agriculture. At the same time, urbanization of agricultural land decreases surface permeability, replaces irrigated fields, and amplifies the impacts of climate change. Gödel's first incompleteness theorem states that within any standard consistent formal system of mathematics, there are statements for which neither themselves nor their negations can be proven. This dissertation addresses the critical challenge of adversarial robustness in deep learning systems, focusing on two fundamental domains: time-series prediction and object detection. As these AI systems become increasingly deployed in safety-critical applications from power grid management to autonomous vehicles their vulnerability to adversarial attacks poses significant risks to infrastructure and human safety.

The first contribution introduces a novel stealthy black-box False Data Injection (FDI) attack specifically designed for quasi-periodic time-series data. This study evaluates two finite-amplitude acoustic models, by solving the associated equations of motion (in potential form), and then compares the results with recent studies using hyperbolic system-level approaches. An implicit numerical method is employed to solve the second-order equations in one dimension. The performances of the Diaz et al. (2018) and Blackstock (1963) models in approximating the acoustic special case of the Euler system, via velocity profile plots and related metrics, are evaluated and compared. This thesis explores the impact of AI-assisted narrative generation on player immersion and agency in a live-action roleplaying (LARP) experience. A live-action murder mystery game was designed and run in two formats: a static version with GPT-4 generated characters, dialogue, and stage directions, and a dynamic version where players created their own characters and improvised freely, guided by AI-generated narrative beats, a story element that moves the plot forward [21], that provided a narrative scaffolding for the players. This thesis presents a framework for parameter sensitivity analysis and optimization of coastal hydrodynamic models. The research uses the Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE) method to quantify parameter sensitivity and identify optimal values for currents, wave height, and water level. A variance-based technique guides parameter selection when GLUE yields competing values or when observations are unavailable.

The framework is demonstrated through two case studies: Hurricane Michael (2018) and the ExCaliBur field study (2022) near Oceanside, CA. The goal of this research was to create thin films with induced helical anisotropy and investigate magnetic properties of such films and their patterns. An alloy of 20% iron and 80% nickel (permalloy) was used because of very small magnetocrystalline anisotropy and magnetostriction. First, an unconventional method was used to deposit films with uniaxial anisotropy by sputtering the films onto silicon substrates in the presence of a uniform field of 50 Oe along the substrate plane. This dissertation develops and applies advanced statistical and optimization frameworks to enhance decision-making under uncertainty, particularly in engineering and manufacturing contexts. First, we introduce an approach for the optimal design of controlled experiments that accounts for observational covariates, enabling more precise and personalized decisions. Second, we explore the application of constrained Bayesian optimization, using Gaussian process surrogate models, to optimize composite cure processes, significantly reducing computational effort while maintaining high predictive accuracy. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) power a wide range of modern devices, from smartphones to electric vehicles. This dissertation integrates materials characterization and electrochemical testing to develop novel Si-based electrode materials, investigate separator effects, and improve electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) modeling. First, I synthesized Si@CC composites using bio-based carbon sources and discovered a novel in situ disorder reduction in the amorphous carbon cloud during cycling, attributed to Si volume fluctuations and mesoporous carbon structure, which enhanced capacity retention. A binder-free electrode (Si@CC@BP) using bucky paper further improved gravimetric and areal capacities while reducing weight and manufacturing complexity.

This study evaluates the effectiveness of eight individual Western Electric rules, also known as WECO rules, and the various combinations of these rules with Shewhart rule (or WECO rule 1) to SPC charts. This study presents a hydrogeologic assessment of the Distributed Renewable Energy Agriculture Modalities (DREAM) pilot project, an ongoing groundwater development initiative in rural Ethiopia. This project integrates solar-powered groundwater infrastructure across six villages to improve water access, agricultural productivity, and economic stability.

Fourteen production wells were installed at Murche, four at Dalle, and additional test wells at Murche, Dalle, Chefe Kora, and Huluku. Transmissivity values and the number of wells at Murche suggest that local water needs are currently being met. In contrast, fewer wells were drilled at Dalle.
