Epidemics have shaped the trajectory of human history, repeatedly exposing vulnerabilities in healthcare systems and influencing socio-economic dynamics on a global scale. The COVID-19 pandemic, in particular, underscored the pressing need for flexible and responsive modeling framework capable of adapting to dynamic and evolving epidemic scenarios. Motivated by these challenges, this thesis explores the development of innovative epidemic models that integrate classical mathematical modeling techniques, network-based frameworks, and modern data-driven approaches. To provide constraints on the formation mechanisms of intracontinental volcanisms and intriguing lithospheric thickness variations in the East Sayan Mountains and surrounding areas, we stack P-to-s receiver functions to image the 410-km and 660-km discontinuities. Mantle transition zone (MTZ) thickening observed in a continuous area is attributable to ancient slab remnants, and Cenozoic volcanisms in the peripheral area can be explained by slab dehydration. The thinning of the MTZ in the Tuva-Mongolian Massif can be explained by mantle upwelling branches induced by slab subduction. Hydroclimatic whiplash rapid shifts between drought and flood poses growing risks to U.S. communities. Here, we assess historical extremes and future projections using a normalized streamflow metric: the annual mean flow’s deviation from the 1981–2020 average, expressed as a fraction of that average. This metric is applied to United States Geological Survey records and Localized Constructed Analogs downscaled projections under Representative Concentration Pathways 4.5 and 8.5. Results reveal sharp regional disparities, with drought deficits exceeding 300% of normal flow during multi-year droughts. By linking hydrologic outcomes with the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s National Risk Index, we find that counties facing …

The Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) represents the sole tropical pathway connecting Pacific and Indian Oceans, yet quantitative understanding of climate mode influences on its variability remains incomplete. We applied information-theoretic and topological frameworks to analyze 34 years (1984-2017) of observational ITF transport data alongside ENSO and IOD indices. Bootstrap analysis revealed pronounced ITF seasonality with 13.28 Sv amplitude peaking in September, contrasting with negligible climate index annual cycles, indicating scale separation in forcing mechanisms. Multi-method extrema detection identified 36-41 extreme events per variable, with 23.1% coincidence between ENSO and IOD high extrema confirming known co-occurrence patterns. Aryl alkyl sulfones are an important class of compounds in drug discovery; thus, new methods toward their synthesis are desirable. A general sulfur fluoride exchange (SuFEx) method to couple aryl sulfonyl fluorides with alkyl carbon pronucleophiles to make aryl alkyl sulfones is described. The reaction was applied to a diverse set of pronucleophiles, including esters, amides, heteroarenes, nitriles, sulfones, sulfoxides, and sulfonamides, at room temperature under mild conditions. We highlight the application of this transformation in parallel medicinal chemistry for the high-throughput generation of a broad array of aryl alkyl sulfones. In order to evaluate the vortex-induced vibration (VIV ) performance of a single-tower ground-anchored cable-stayed bridge with a double-side box open section composite main girder,sectional model wind tunnel tests were conducted under different wind angles of attack and wind speeds.The results show that the torsional stiffness of the π-shaped open section main girder is significantly higher than its vertical bending stiffness.The dominant vibration mode of the main girder is the obvious vibration of the main span,while the ground-anchored abutment effectively stabilizes the cable tower through the back stays.At the damping ratio level specified in the code,within the range of prevailing …

To address the problems of hollow recognition results,high noise,and poor crack continuity in pavement crack identification using the Sobel algorithm,this paper proposed a joint algorithm combining the Sobel algorithm and matched filter for three-dimensional crack recognition of asphalt pavement.A matched filter in the form of a sine function was designed,and the matched filter was used to extract crack features from the results of the Sobel algorithm.The matched filter results were subjected to threshold filtering and connected domain analysis to effectively solve the hollow recognition problem,while also reducing noise and improving crack continuity.The test results show that the Sobel + matched …

In order to improve the on-site construction efficiency of bridge concrete barriers,a prefabrication scheme for bridge concrete barrier installation was proposed.A structure scheme was developed by anchoring transverse steel bars at the bottom of prefabricated wall panels into the integrated cast-in-situ layer,adopting tongue-and-groove connections between adjacent wall panels,and optimizing the structural configuration and reinforcement of the panels.According to the requirements of the Level VI protection standard,full-scale impact tests using a large bus and a large truck were organized in turn.The results show that the prefabricated concrete bridge barrier can effectively withstand continuous impacts from both large buses and trucks.Its structural …

Landslides pose a significant hazard worldwide. Despite advances in landslide monitoring, predicting their size, timing, and location remains a major challenge. We revisit the 2017 Mud Creek landslide in California using radar interferometry, pixel tracking, and elevation change measurements from satellite and airborne radar, lidar, and optical data. Our analysis shows that pixel tracking of optical imagery captured the transition from slow motion to runaway acceleration starting ~ 1 month before catastrophic failure—an acceleration undetected by satellite InSAR alone. Strain rate maps revealed a new slip surface formed within the landslide body during acceleration, likely a key weakening mechanism. Failure …

Noise in Pulsar Timing Array (PTA) data is commonly modeled as a mixture of white and red noise components. While the former is related to the receivers, and easily characterized by three parameters (EFAC, EQUAD and ECORR), the latter arises from a mix of hard to model sources and, potentially, a stochastic gravitational wave background (GWB). Since their frequency ranges overlap, GWB search methods must model the non-GWB red noise component in PTA data explicitly, typically as a set of mutually independent Gaussian stationary processes having power-law power spectral densities. We experimentally and numerically study the collapse dynamics of a quantum vortex in a two-dimensional atomic superfluid following a fast interaction ramp from repulsion to attraction. We find the conditions and timescales for a superfluid vortex to radially converge into a quasi-stationary density profile, demonstrating the spontaneous formation of a vortex soliton like structure in an atomic Bose gas. We record an emergent self-similar dynamic caused by an azimuthal modulational instability, which amplifies initial density perturbations and leads to the eventual splitting of a solitonic ring profile or direct fragmentation of a superfluid into disordered, but roughly circular arrays of …

In this paper, we generalise to the family of Fermat quartics X4+Y4=2m,m∈Z, a result of Aigner [‘Über die Möglichkeit von x4+y4=z4 in quadratischen Körpern’, Jahresber. Deutsch. Math.-Ver. 43 (1934), 226–228], which proves that there is only one quadratic field, namely Q(−7−−−√), that contains solutions to the Fermat quartic X4+Y4=1. The m≡0(mod4) case is due to Aigner. The m≡2(mod4) case follows from a result of Emory [‘The Diophantine equation X4+Y4=D2Z4 in quadratic fields’, Integers 12 (2012), Article no. A65, 8 pages]. We present a fully quantum mechanical description of a free Li atom scattering from a trapped Yb+ ion in one dimension. By reformulating the system in polar coordinates and employing the adiabatic representation, we extract a set of coupled adiabatic potentials representing the atom interacting with the ion in different trap states. In an approach similar to quantum defect theory, we leverage the vast difference in energy scale between the interaction, the trap, and the scattering energy to encapsulate the short-range atom-ion scattering behavior in a single phase parameter. In order to explore the diffusion behavior of chloride ions in cracked cement mortar with high fly ash (FA) content,this study fabricated cement mortar specimens with different FA contents and crack widths by artificially prefabricating cracks.The chloride ion content in cracks was measured after natural soaking for 30 days and 60 days.The results show that the cracks accelerate the diffusion of chloride ions in cement mortar.The increase in the diffusion coefficient caused by 0.05 mm and 0.1 mm cracks is similar,while that caused by a 0.2 mm crack is significantly higher.After 30 days of soaking,the chloride ion content of the …

In order to investigate the adhesion mechanism at the interface between geopolymer-modified emulsified asphalt slurry and aggregate,the interfacial adhesion performance was studied by the molecular dynamics method and compared with that of cement-modified emulsified asphalt slurry.In addition,macro-scale splitting strength tests were performed for verification.The results indicate that van der Waals forces play a major role in the adhesion at the slurry-aggregate interface.Under equivalent mix ratios,the interfacial binding energy between the geopolymer-modified emulsified asphalt slurry and aggregate is 6.84% ‒19.99% higher than that of the cement system.The adhesion performance is closely related to the diffusion properties and atomic distribution of the …

This study aims to optimize the mix design of alkali-activated red mud-based controlled low-strength materials (CLSMs ) to enhance their applicability in road engineering backfilling.The effects of red mud content (20% ‒ 50%),water-to-solid ratio (0.30‒0.36),sand-to-soil ratio (7∶3‒4∶6),polycarboxylate superplasticizer (PEC ) dosage (0%‒2.1%),and fly ash to mineral powder ratio (5∶1‒0.5∶1) on the flowability and bleeding resistance of the materials were systematically investigated.The results are as follows:① The water-to-solid ratio significantly influences flowability.Increasing it to 0.32‒0.34 improves flowability by 39%‒78%,but when the ratio exceeds 0.34,the bleeding rate increases significantly (up to 4.89%);② When the red mud content is 30%‒40%,the high specific surface …

The deflection influence surface (DIS) of a spatial structure is difficult to calculate using the existing two-dimensional boundary element method.To address this issue,a damage localization method based on DIS calculated using the three-dimensional boundary face method (BFM ) was proposed.A custom BFM program with an internal loop was developed,and the internal forces and deformations of a square plate and a supported T-beam structure were calculated using the static method.By specifying the domain of the order of a bivariate polynomial function (BPF ),a secondary optimization program for influence surfaces was established,and the DIS with the minimum mean square error was obtained.The …

Wind field parameters at bridge sites serve as an important basis for wind-resistant bridge design.The terrain surrounding the Xuefenghu Bridge is unique-mountains flank both sides in the bridge-aligned direction,and the bridge spans the wide surface of the Zhexi Reservoir.In order to investigate the wind field characteristics under such complex topographic conditions,an observation,acquisition,and wireless data transmission system was established at the bridge site.A one-year in-situ wind measurement campaign was conducted,and the characteristics of average wind and fluctuating wind were deeply analyzed.The results show that the average wind speed at the bridge site generally follows a Weibull distribution,and the average wind direction …
